I have to admit, the thing that lured me in about Fathers House was the cover. Once I started reading, I felt ‘meh’. The story offered a lot of different characters, and I couldn’t really grasp them, or even keep them apart. There was Mayo Fathers, owner of Fathers House. There was Ben, his family, and a whole bunch of other characters passing the revenue. Each chapter seemed to introduce us to a whole new cast of characters. By chapter five, I was ready to quit.

But then, the story came together. Dots connected in ways I hadn’t anticipated. Twists and turns meandered into one big whole, a story so complicated it feels like a Sherlock Holmes book. Except bloodier.

There’s death upon death, mystery behind mystery, a criminal organization, an evil mastermind of sorts, the wickedness of people in general, and tons more. When a murder happens at Fathers House, Ben is forced to go back to the house he grew up in, along with several other boys. But when Ben goes back, he starts to unroot dark secrets better left buried, that change his perspective of Fathers House forever…

With a healthy dose of suspense, mystery and nail-biting cliffhangers, Fathers House kept me to the edge of my seat.

This is my review for Fathers House; the opinions expressed are my own and were in no way influenced by anyone else.

Fathers House is a mystery/suspense novel that takes place in Duraleigh, North Carolina. The government officials are busy proclaiming that there is no gang violence and their streets are clean while all along getting kick-backs from a large crime syndicate called Fathers Disciples. No one knows who they are and no one is really sure where they came from. Signs seem to point to Fathers House, a home for wayward boys, run by “Uncle” Mayo Fathers. Is this pillar of the community really a front for a massive criminal empire? Who can you trust when everyone seems to be on the take?

Ben Lovison is an assistant in the District Attorney’s office who is given a case to prosecute that involved a savage beating death of a boy who lives at Fathers House by another of his peers, one who also lives at Fathers House. Ben has a history with Fathers House; he is one of their success stories. After the brutal murder of his mother, he is taken in by Uncle Mayo and he not only survives, he thrives. He graduates high school, college and law school. What should be a simple open and closed case becomes anything but. With twists and turns along the way, Ben slowly comes to realize that there is something dark lurking in Fathers House and through the streets of Duraleigh.

The story builds very slowly and for readers who don’t have the patience to let the story build, they will probably become disinterested after a few chapters. There are a lot of characters and it’s very hard to keep them all straight, some of them are unfortunately very interchangeable and that really ends up taking away from what really is a very well written story. The plot is strong, and the twists are unexpected for the most part. But the characters tend to get in the way. I think if the cast was pared down a bit and more was done to identify and flesh out some of the more important characters it would have worked much better.

Once you make it past the first few chapters, the story really begins to move quickly through the twists and turns and the author does finally connect all the dots together to make a more coherent picture. I’m not sure if this was the intention of the author to have so many threads dangling out in the wind and then have them all tied together by the climax, but that’s definitely how it seemed to me. It was really rough at first to try and keep all the threads straight and try to remember who was who and what side were they really on, but in the end I think it all worked out. Satisfying climax though it was rather fast, a blink and you miss it type.

Fathers House has a solid plot with some really solid characters, both good and evil. Too many characters did detract a bit for me and some of them really didn’t lend much to the story itself other than to connect a dot later on. But that’s just one person’s opinion. This is an independently published novel if I remember correctly and while it might turn a lot of people off if it doesn't come from a big name publishing company, this novel was very well edited, very few errors and the formatting was better than I've seen in many, many independently published books. Even the cover was interesting! If you like crime stories, mysteries or suspense, give Fathers House a try.

Note: This review originally appeared on Devin's Book Hub. I had received a copy of this story from StoryCartel for reviewing purposes.

Fathers House is the debut crime thriller from C. Edward Baldwin. The story follows Ben Lovison, an assistant district attorney in Duraleigh, North Carolina, who loves his job, his wife, and his soon to be born twins. Duraleigh is touted as one of the safest cities to live in due to all gangs being disbanded, no street violence, and no drug problems. But is that really the case? As Ben digs further and further into his investigation, he's led to believe that "Uncle" Mayo Fathers, the man in charge of Fathers House, is actually running a secret drug operation from the building's basement as well as his funeral home. Is Fathers House, a home for troubled adolescent boys, really that, or is it just a front for the drugs? Who are the Fathers Disciples? Is Mayo really Father, or is Father someone else? It's up to Ben to piece together what little information he has and figure out who's on his side and who's on Fathers' side before it's too late.

Fathers House was an thrilling read. The story is told in third person and every chapter it jumps to a different character so you can see what they're currently up to and dealing with. I kept turning the pages to see if Ben would gather any new intel on Fathers House, Fathers Disciples, or Uncle Mayo himself. Around the middle of the book there were some unexpected plot twists, and as a result, by the end of the story things turned out differently than how I expected them to. I love it when that happens!

With the corruption of city officials in mind, I found myself beginning to doubt everyone and trust nobody just like Ben. Are people really as they seem? Are they really telling the truth? Whenever someone spoke up and tipped Ben or the FBI about the mysterious drug ring, Father got word of it and sought punishment for them, a punishment that usually resulted in death. Father knows law enforcement is on the trail of Fathers Disciples, but he won't go down without a fight.

Overall I found Fathers House to be a decent and unique crime thriller, as the plot wasn't about solving mysterious murders like a lot of crime novels are. I also enjoyed how there were lots of dead ends and only minimal pieces of information the agents could at least try to piece together. C. Edward Baldwin's next book, Rememberers , will be the first of three books in his new urban fantasy series. Rememberers will be out in early June.

I received an ARC in exchange for a nonbiased review.
Ben Lovison is at the peak of his life. He has a beautiful wife, is a well known and respected Assistant District Attorney, and has two twins on the way. Things are going great, until he reviews his most recent case and realizes he has something in common with the defendant, Fathers House. He doesn’t like to be connected to the defendants in anyway, in case someone tries to say he was giving away sweetheart deals because they had a connection. The twins were ready to make their grand entrance, 10 weeks early, all the while activity at Fathers House was about to be at an all time high.
Mayo Fathers is in charge of Fathers House, a place that accepts and helps adolescent boys in need of help, a new home, or a place to stay while their parents get their act together. He is also the owner of a very successful funeral home that services the city. Some of the boys also knew Mayo Fathers as Fathers Disciples, as well.
How does a city go from almost an all time high of criminal activity to an almost all time low, in just a few short years? A group of powerful criminals get the cops, city officials, judges, and District Attorneys in their back pocket. This is easily done under the cover of a well known, and respected, business and individual, Mayo Fathers. He has opened up his home to take care of boys that have no place else to go. He teaches them and encourages them to become something better. What happens to those boys that just can’t conform to behaving and show signs of a current criminal lifestyle?
I enjoyed reading this book. The suspense written into the story had me on edge several times waiting to see what was up next for Ben Lovison or for Fathers House. I had a few theories throughout the story and at times it seemed as my theories were on track and other times I was left confused and frustrated. As I kept reading more and more of the story unraveled. This is a story you want to believe will never happen in your life or in someone else’s life. Parts of this story happen every day though, government officials being bribed. Some cops, judges, and district attorneys all accept bribes and closing a blind eye to the criminal action for their own gain. The author does a great job adding a deep dark twist to the everyday story of corruption. The end had me incredibly surprised. It wasn’t a theory or idea I had even thought of.
This story was intriguing and well written. It was dark, suspenseful, and full of action. If these are the types of things you like out of books, you will definitely enjoy the book!

Fathers House (boy’s home, 1024 Holston St.) was run by Mayo Fathers.
Fathers Disciples were known to operate a drug operation in Duraleigh, NC for the past 20 yrs. Crime & violence came along with that. Uncle Mayo also runs a chain of funeral homes.

Lucas McCain & Jermaine Bledsoe names were linked to the organization.
Cindy Storrs & Calvin Leeson had just recently died or were executed.
An FBI unclassified Operation Heaven Sent was set in motion.
Benjamin Ben Clyde Lovison (Duraleigh County DA) is investigating both of these crimes.
At 13, Ben had once lived in the boy’s home after his mother had been murdered & the father vanished & was never seen again.
Alice Lovison (nee Ellison) is Ben’s African-American wife. Stephen Ellison & Patricia Ellison are his A/A in-laws.
Calvin Lamont Leeson had been killed. His funeral at Hope Christian Church of God in Christ was attended by the Fathers House boy’s home.
Acting Special Agent-In-Charge Tom Ram (FBI, Virginia Tech) & Special Agent Ernie McDougald (FBI) were trying to piece the 3 killings together.
What will Sarah Leeson (C.P.A., nee Stock) reveal to them?

The next victim was Cain Simmons (criminal, rapper).
Days later was the funeral, a very large crowd.
Sarah Leeson was missing.
What is Special Agent Caleb Dawson story?
Marvelous Killens (ex-boxer, assassin, Father’s top lieutenant) is whacked.

What will happen to Ben?

Who will be indicted for the crimes & corruption?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written crime book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great crime movie, or mini TV series. 1 book you won’t want to put down. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Fathers House is a dark thriller that explores the dark themes of drugs, the foster system, and the legal system. Uncle Mayo Fathers runs a group home for boys. But in the first few pages of Fathers House, we also learn that there's more going on at Fathers House than simply caring for orphaned and homeless teens. Fathers House has a dark and dangerous side full of secrets. I'll warn you. The first chapter is very disturbing. That's not to say that the rest of the book is easy. It's not and it's not designed to be. However, be warned.

Not all of the inhabitants of Fathers House know about this dark side. In particular, one of Fathers House's previous inhabitants, Ben Lovison, an assistant district attorney knew nothing of the darkness when he lived there. Now that he's out though, he's going to learn.

There are too many twists and turns in this book to go much further without major spoilers or without making this review longer than the novel itself. This is both a boon and a detriment.

In the first few chapters, we meet dozens of different characters. While all are important and serve their purpose, it was a little overwhelming and delayed my total immersion into the story. I spent too much energy trying to keep everyone straight. There were a couple of times during the first few chapters that I had to close the book and move on to something else. It was just too hard to keep the characters and subplots straight.

Once you get past that initial confusion and start to see the links between all of the characters, the story takes off. I found the payoff in the end satisfying, even if some of the twists to get there left me unsettled. Mayo Fathers is a suitable villain and Ben Lovison is a worthy hero. The writing and editing are excellent. In fact, the few times the initial confusion urged me to stop, it was the writing that kept me going. I just knew with writing like this, the story had to get there and grab me soon.

In summary, don't give up after the first few chapters. There are a lot of characters and a lot of subplots to deal with, but once you get them all straight, Fathers House is a worthwhile read.

I can say that I enjoyed reading Fathers House. It's a really entertaining book, to me at least, for the following reasons-

1) From the first page you get to sneak into Ben Lovison's head, walk through his thoughts, feel his struggles, misery and become emotionally attached to the protagonist from the very start. Good character development.

2) The story line is pretty unique and the fiction world is a subject to constant plot twists that manage to grab your attention and keep it until the very end. Also, you get a lot of mysteries that are progressively revealed, a piece at a time. Intriuging and proggressive story line.

3) Everything is vividly described and easily portrayable the way it's written and brought to the reader.

Well put

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway.

Tragedy really comes full circle in this novel. Fathers House forces you question a lot of realistic aspects in life. What if a stranger who wronged you in the past appeared again? What would you do? What if they wronged someone else? A very intense read that has you trying to identify with certain characters in the novel. The protagonist, Ben Lovison has everything he could want despite his troubled upbringing, but it all falls down when his past reveals itself emotionally and physically. Authors usually write about harmful memories coming into the story in thought, not in person. This is a very different and bold take on such a cliched idea that works out amazingly.

Fathers House contains an incredible amount of twists and turns - a mystery after a mystery, a death after a death and the big puzzle around the mysterious events grows in every page and occupies your attention completely. Just when you think you have it all figured out, Ben finds a new clue, which changes everything. I'm not including examples in this review, since I do not want to be spoiler.

The only issue with the story could be the big amount of ''not so important'' characters the author introduces and could be confusing at some times, but I guess they also add some diversity to spice the story up.

Overally, it's a really intriguing story.

Fathers House ended up to be a very nice book for me. The thing that gives this book 5 stars and makes it stand out in front of other titles in the similar genre is its progressive story line. The crime activities in the beginning look pretty average, but as the story involves you get to see how all crimes have been connected and together they form a really intriguing cycle and a plot you never see coming.

The entire book contains a lot of action and keeps you hooked throughout all its pages, I can recommend it to action lovers and those, who are into deep underground criminal societies

The fictional crime world in which the story takes place is very well structured. There are tons of different characters, all the elements around the mysterious murders are carefully put together to get your brain thinking along with the crime investigator Ben Lovison.

The story is packed with action. Everything is so vividly portrayed that you fall in love with the characters. If you like amazing plot twists, and compelling character development, Baldwin has woven together a great story that will keep you turning the page until it's done!

I really liked it!

It started off a bit slow for me, and there were a LOT of story lines and characters, but when they all came together, the story was amazing!

There were twists and turns that nobody could see coming, and it made the story really intriguing. Lawyers, city officials, drug dealers, Moms, priests... so many characters that normally wouldn't interact with each other, but that the author brought together to make an intriguing story! I wil definitely be looking for C. Edward Baldwins next book!
