I just finished reading The Riddles of Hillgate and truly enjoyed it. This wonderfully written book had you guessing what was next! Always something unexpected and intriguing happening. I found myself trying to figure out the riddles while cooking dinner or one of the other tasks pulled me away from the book. I like to think that I am a strong woman but Zoey and Claire were much kinder and braver than I would have been under the same circumstances. They are what I strive to be. I can’t wait to read the sequel Cruise to Murder.

Awful, truly awful.

The beginning of the read showed some promise, but this quickly evaporated, at least by the second chapter.

I did plod on for several chapters, but ultimately surrendered any hope of getting to the end. Wooden characters, weak storyline and dreadful writing all lead me to abandon this short read soon after starting it.

I could not under any circumstances recommend this book.

This was a free book from Amazon, so for quite a few people that will be enough of an explanation to explain my star rating on this to be honest.

For anyone else, and if you keep an eye on my reviews, you'll know that when I do read a free book from Amazon I am well aware that the author was likely independently published, and the book would have gone through little to no editing procedures. In the cases where I didn't get along with the book I therefore, generally, try to find something nice to say about the book. Afterall, if someone is a self-published author they have done something many others won't have done, they have put themselves out there, and so they ought to be praised for doing that.

That said... I have thought, and thought, and thought as to what I could say about this that is positive... and literally nothing comes to mind - except it killed some time on the train the last two days. Granted doing a Sudoku or a crossword would have done the same thing and far more enjoyably but still.

So, on the offchance the author sees this, thank you for trying your best with this book. Clearly other people really enjoyed this so don't let my lack of enthusiasm get you down. That said the below are some things you might want to consider:

- Picking a genre. This book came across as all over the place. Was it trying to be chick-lit? Was it trying to be a murder mystery? Was it trying to be a regular mystery? It took far too long (in my opinion) for this book to make its decision and it suffered for that. I felt like this was trying to be another High Heels Mysteries, and just missed the mark a bit...
- Learn to show not tell. The major, major fault I had with this book was that I felt like, every single sentence, was telling me what was going on. A good book (for me) paints a picture and the book acts as a narrator in my head - I'm able to visualise the characters, the locations, the clothing. I don't need it to be a paint by numbers picture that details everything and hits me over the head with it.
- Improved characterisation/dialogue. So... I am not sure here whether the characters suffer due to the stilted dialogue they share, or whether the dialogue suffers because the characters are cardboard cut-out semi-stereotypes. Improving one aspect may well improve the other!

Either way, I am highly unlikely to read anything else by the Kane's... unless it was free from Amazon and part of that mass downloading spree I went on a few years back.

description

The Hillgate mansion is full of mystery, history and wonder! As you trek across the eight acres of land, you will come across a wonder locked away from prying eyes and hidden under weeds and unwanted parasites, to reveal a lost antique that will change the community forever. I love the cover, how the mother and daughter are silhouetted adds great mystery and the moonlight showing how a lot of the dangers... begin at night!

Zo is known in the community for making risking purchases and most of the time, not selling them. Now, her purchases are something to laugh about with in the community, especially when she buys eight acres of muddy land, right next to a landfill site. But, who knew that beyond the hills there would be a lost mystery. As Zo and Claire attempt to bring this lost treasure back to life and reveal its secrets to all... there is something stopping them and a mystery to stop them in their tracks.

This is a quick read of which will have you wracking your brain to solve the mysteriously imprinted riddles into priceless treasures. I loved the way in which they transformed the mansion, and the way that when one crowd is scared away an opposite crowd comes bounding through the doors. But also the pure creeiness of the house and then in the attic... AHH! How could they have lived there after that. This just made it even more tragic concerning the early family, but also the motive of it! LOVED IT!

This book is full of mystery and suspense, but also shows how money can drive people apart and the wrong people in. You also get to see a strong and loving relationship between a mother and daughter, and their shared passion for history and the hidden mysteries.

I highly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next one in the series.
And if you have a old, haunted house with an attic... please check it, NOW!

The Riddles of Hillgate is a cute, cozy mystery with all that you'd expect from a cozy. It's got the female protagonists who end up with a mystery to solve on their own.

Poor Zoey has had some bad luck in real estate. So when she buys a huge plot of land, by the dump mind you, sight unseen, the townsfolk are less than kind to her. They make fun of her purchase and look down on her business sense. Fortunately for her, her daughter, Claire, shows up right around the same time, and she takes her to explore this plot of land. Things don't look too promising when they first start looking around. There's a graveyard and a huge hill and lots of weeds. But when the fog begins to clear, they notice a huge mansion lurking in the distance. And it's all theirs! It's still full of antique furniture and clothing. So they do what anyone would do in their circumstances....turn it into a hotel!

This hotel endeavor runs into some snags, and it seems the place is haunted! Is it haunted? What really happened at the mansion that all the furniture and clothing are still there? You'll have to read to find out!

This book is quirky and silly and a good quick read. The mystery isn't bloody or gory, and the language is clean. It's the type you need to read once in awhile for your mental health :)

This was such a fun mystery to read. I couldn't help but feel that Zoey & Claire were the perfect mother daughter duo for this kind of story. The book is about as the title suggests the riddles of Hillgate. When Claire's mother Zoey makes a purchase of 80 acres Claire feels nothing short of shocked and dissapointment. Until they stumble upon a 300 year old but amazing house that is. Clearing up the house they decide to turn it into an hotel. But when customers start seeing things and freak accidents happen all of a sudden Zo and Claire are freaked.

What was happening? Was this place cursed as the local newspapers state??

I especially loved the relationship between Zo & Claire. You could see that they were really close and comfortable around each other and seemed more like BFFs. I can't say much without giving away more of the story. So suffice it to say, if you want a light, interesting and yet fun mystery to read, The Riddles of Hillgate is the book for you!

This book was a light and zany, quick read. At only 138 pages, this book is short enough to be finished in an evening (I’m a fast reader.) Zoey and Claire Kane (also the names of the authors of the book) are the perfect example of Murphy’s Law. There is always something going wrong, from Claire driving into a ditch, to the skeletons in the mansion and a murder on the opening night of their hotel.

There was a little bit of everything in this novella from romance to murder to ghosts (or were they ghosts?) I love how Zo and Claire have such a wonderful, close relationship – even to the point of a double date!

Some of the events are quite far-fetched or illogical, but it would be a spoiler if I mentioned them, so I won’t. This book is not meant as a serious read, so these improbable events don’t really hamper the story.

Lots of fun for a light-hearted read. I gave this book 3 stars.

I just couldn't suspend disbelief for this one. The story starts out with the members of the Chamber of Commerce taunting one of their own for her unwise purchases. I've belonged to a number of chambers of commerce, and professional people in a business setting would not act like elementary school kids making fun of someone in their midst. Then the whole concept that a mansion would be overgrown and forgotten and the family would disappear with no questions asked for seventy years is just not plausible. The riddles are answered and the mystery supposedly solved and the villain dead, and then with no explanation, the riddles start again. There's never any explanation of how that came about. The IRS comes after Zoey for taxes on the property--property taxes are levied at the local level. The IRS taxes income, not property. Combine the implausibility of the whole premise with the poor editing and the only reason I finished the book was was that it was so short and I was hoping there would be some kind of plausible solution to the mystery. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.

What a FUN, INTRIGUING book!

A little humor
A little mystery
A little suspense
A little romance
A little treasure-hunting
A wonderful read!

Zoey has made her craziest purchase to date...eighty acres of who knows what.

Claire has just lost her job and her boyfriend and has come home to be with her mom.

Together the two start walking through the eighty acres.

They come across a family cemetery, an old mansion and a lot of weeds.

The mansion is filled with all the heirlooms left behind by the previous family.

Why would they leave everything behind? And what happened to the family? And why is there an old newspaper detailing the Riverside fire of 1927 in an old locked trunk?

After months of work they finally have the mansion ready for guests.

But when the guests start complaining that the mansion is haunted Zoey and Claire have their work cut out for them...

Can they uncover "the riddles of Hillgate" manor?

This book is a treasure of cozy proportions!
The antique obsessed, firecracker that is Zoey Kane, and her
equally spirited daughter Claire, are taking sleuthing to hysterical heights
in The Riddles of Hillgate.

The chances are often slim to none that a reader can find likeable, well rounded, and
true to life characters, a thoroughly executed mystery that manages to keep one guessing,
and highbrow hilarity in 138 pages.
That is however, just what this miniature masterpiece of mother/daughter mystery
manages to do with a style and flair all it's own.

This is the perfect read for anyone looking for a little slice of fun and adventure
packaged small enough for one sitting;
with a story big enough to keep one thinking about it for days.

Ahhh, another fun and quick read! Some may find The Riddles of Hillgate to be cheesy, but I consider it cheesy FUN! I love cheesy fun!

Zoey and Claire are a great mother-daughter team who both hit bottom at the same time. With luck, the stumbled upon the mansion that they dubbed, Hillgate, turned out to be a great experience for them.

This was a fun mystery with comedy to go along with it. Dealing with trying to earn money by turning it into a hotel and having a "ghost" and finding out the secrets about the family and what happened back in the 1920s was fun! This was a story that was written well. The descriptions were fun and endearing (at the end).

I would definitely continue reading about Zoey's and Claire's adventures.

I love this book... Too bad it was so short. This book is perfect for those who want something short and easy to read, it even has riddles... How awesome is that? The book although short got straight to the point and it kept me wanting more. I didn't think that this book would be even remotely scary but there were a few times that had me pull up my bed cover to my chin. I love how the author described the mansion (I have a thing for stained glass windows).

I found myself laughing because it was so bad. Do the Mother and daughter have any friends? They find an old mansion on their property and sleep in it that night? Why do they share a room and a bed, even after they fix it up? It skips over a lot of things and skips around too much. I'm glad it was free.

Author should have done a little research on tax law. When you have twenty bedrooms why are mother and daughter sleeping in the same room let alone the same bed. Finished it only because I finish books.

~Light mystery adventure
~This is one of those “just okay” books…not even “OKAY.” I like an interesting twist to a story…but the twists that were presented were simply too unbelievable. The mother/daughter duet both seemed rather incompetent. Really, who carries around a big flashlight “for security” and has never put any batteries in it??? If it is for physical security, the batteries would give it a bit of heft as a persuader. No, the plot simply was not well thought out. The villain was playing a long game plan…but, once again, it was not thought out…definitely not the criminal master mind the authors tried to portray him as. And buying off the loyalty of a Pawn broker at the end of the story…no.
~I have come across a few abandoned buildings in my travels, and believe me, there was nothing inside any of the closets that I’d want to be wearing to a formal gathering. Again, it feels like the authors did not do their research and have never set foot in an old abandoned house.
~This was billed as a “cozy” mystery…which means that there should have been some romance offered within the story. Nothing hot and steamy, like a harlequin novel…but something…nothing really happened. I was left with the impression at the end of the mystery and the story that the mom and daughter were going off on a cruise without the two fellows who might have been a romantic interest.
~There were a couple places where I had to re-read a section…’cause I felt it was confusing or missing something. I don’t feel that the storyline flowed smoothly and concisely.
~I finished it, but I would not bother with any future books by this pair of authors…nor can I recommend it to anyone looking for a well written, fast paced, mystery adventure.

"The Riddles of Hillgate", first in the 'Zoey & Claire Mysteries' is an offbeat cosy with a touch of the paranormal.
Zoey Kane is a not very successful real estate agent with a habit of buying off the wall things. Her latest acquisition is a quantum leap in terms of spending, a mansion on 80 acres.
Oddly, the members of the local Chamber of Commerce are openly bitchy about her business acumen.
She's joined in exploring the house by her daughter, Claire, who has recently broken up with her long-term boyfriend Jack and moved home to Riverside.
As Zoey's funds run low she makes the decision to turn the mansion into a hotel.
Strange things begin to happen, ghostly apparitions, a murder, unexplained music in the middle of the night, the usual woo-woo stuff.
It's unusual to find a novel in which the authors star or, in this case, could it have been the characters who published the book? (Just a thought!)
As long as you can suspend disbelief about how the 80-acre estate fell off the map, so much so that the mansion it contains was forgotten, you'll be fine. It's much the same for the clues that keep turning up just when they are needed.
The problem with cosies in general is that, by trying not to offend anyone, they generally lack character depth. It's very much the case here as, for example, when Zoey, fighting for her life, exclaims:- “You greedy, murderous, inhumane geezer!” 'Geezer'? Oh, come on.
It's a good read with some nice touches and some of the above are just quibbles - I just got the feeling that it could have been a better book had it had a tougher approach.
3 Stars.

An enjoyable cozy mystery about a mother (who jumps into situations without thinking) and daughter (who second guesses everything her mother does) that run into more than their fair share of misfortune, mystery, and funny situations.

Inane, mindless fun

This is a silly story, if you just want to shut your brain off and have a bit of mild entertainment. I think the author must be about 14, with no real world experience. Hopefully when she grows up, she'll get better.

I got this as a freebee, so can't complain too much. The plot was somewhat interesting, but could have been developed much better, as could the dialog and writing. It was quick and not so bad that I didn't finish. But I'm one and done for this series.
