The former DA's investigator is on a one-woman crusade against the most powerful and dangerous mogul in the Lake Tahoe Sierras. Her crusade will propel her into a deadly underground battle involving a former border patrol agent who can't seem to resist her, a highly imaginative hit man, and a brilliant prostitute with revenge on her mind.
I had never read anything by Richter Watkins but the cover design and title of this book caught my attention so I decided to give it a read, you will notice that I didn’t say “give it a whirl.” As a writer myself, I truly hate using over used clichés like “give it a whirl.” the fact that I had never heard of Richter didn’t surprise me because there are hundreds of great authors that I have never heard of but after he sucked me right into the story from page one I checked him out and discovered that he has published a plethora of books both fiction and nonfiction that I look forward to reading and gave added him to my preferred authors list already and I have only read the first chapter of this book. This is really a short read at 238 pages, yes, this book has real page numbers which is a big plus in my book, but Richter packs each page with nonstop action so it can be compared to a book of 500 plus pages. You absolutely must read this book. The protagonists are easy to like and root for, while the bad guys are equally easy to hate and want to see them get their well-deserved comeuppances. One of the really great things about the plot of this whirling dervish of a tale is that it’s realistic enough that the reader and see how it might actually happen in the real world today. With this story it isn’t at all difficult to suspend disbelief. Watkins really has his shit together. He knows the locale where the story takes place and he knows his cars and weapons too. The only other thing that I’m going to say about this book is that you have to read it. Its nonstop action from page one, it’s all about blood and guts. I will be reading this book many times again in the future.
There were quite a few production errors – wrong and missed words mainly. There were places, too, where there was a lurch in the dialog or narrative, as if Watkins had cut or added something but never adjusted for it. Every time it happened, I had to go back and re-read the section two or three times to make sure I hadn’t missed something.
This story has an almost caper-like tone to it, with characters strictly out for themselves. Watkins hit just the right tone with it, keeping it from being almost farcical.
Some primary characters and many secondary ones bordered on being clichés straight out of Central Casting.
Bottom line: I’ll read more of these books when they come my way.
I really liked the start of this novel, but started to lose enthusiam about halfway through. I like the parts played by the two women and four main men. It was a good mix of brains and brawn, sex and egotistical attitudes. The hired gun was really a bad dude, but he ended up severely hurt to my surprise. The stripper came out well, as did the two "heroes", but the ending shows the four main characters survived and that this is the beginning of a series. I hope the following books pick it up a notch.
Fortunately we all have different versions on what is great and pleasing to us, in that vain I can sincerely state this book pushed all my buttons, the final page came up far too soon.
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
If you're looking for a book where the good guys where white and the bad where black, then you will be in for a surprise. Nothing is it seems in this suspense-action story. Marco is a man who had just been released from a Mexican prison and headed home. Unfortunately, he is detoured by a woman who has been shot. Unknown to him, she is more trouble than he bargained.
Sydney is a woman who knows her fate but faces it head on. A tough, bad ass, she doesn't cower easily and is realistic about her fate. A former office of the DA, fired for a botched job, Sydney knows too many crime king pins and is bent on revenge for the death of two innocent witnesses.
Add an idiot would be assassin begging to impress his cousin, a true psychopathic assassin out to end Sydney's life, a hot braze prostitute and a large Great Gatsby themed party with all the crime bosses in the vicinity, you have a book that doesn't allow you to rest in between chapters.
There is no "formula" to this story and it will keep you guessing until the end. What happens to Sydney and Marco? The two assassins, the drop-dead call girl?
If you like twists and turns and not predictable story lines, you will enjoy this tale.
Take an ex-DA's investigator, a man who was law enforcement but then spent time in a Mexican prison, released in some underhanded deal with our government and the Mexicans son you are in for a wild ride. Add a contract killer who specializes in suicides hired by a man who would turn Lake Tahoe into another Vegas destroying its wilderness and beauty and the plot thickens. Now add a corrupt lawyer who has accumulated millions representing the man who would be King of Tahoe, and a beautiful prostitute who in fact is a sociopath and you have a mix that keeps you in thrall to the end and hoping the story continues in the next book in the series. I can't wait to read it!
This wasn't a bad novel if you're into hot chicks, macho men, psychotic killers, scumbags in power, and a Vegas/Tahoe/Mafia background, but no graphic sex and limited descriptors on the violence. Throw in a lot of misspelled words and poor grammar and you have a 'B' rated movie in the form of a novel. I still gave it 3 stars because the story wasn't half bad. Heck, when a hot chick on hotter pavement with bare feet, covered in blood and sweat, her hair a mess and she stinks of fish flags down her potential savior by flipping him the bird, you know it can't be all bad.
This book tries very hard to masquerade as one of the Richard Castle books, all of which I've read - thought I'd try it out and I only got a few pages in when I decided that the book was TOTALLY not going to be a book I wanted to read. I may have continued reading it were it not for the title and book cover so obviously trying to look like one of the Nikki Heat books. Don't waste your time on this piece of filth.
Truly enjoyed this book. I often think life is unfair. This story's heroine and her "found" protector find themselves in many unfair situations, however, by the end of the book they are able to pay back some of the unfair occurrences that they had to endure. I am looking forward to the next installment.
