When Shadows Fall, by Patricia Rushford, narrated by Christine McMurdo-Wallis. Produced by Isis, downloaded from audible.com. A. This book is about an ex-policewoman, Helen Bradley who is now married to her dead first husband’s best friend, who works as a consultant for the CIA since he retired. Helen doesn’t know that he is working again, and he is called away on a trip which he won’t explain to her at all. In the meantime, Helen finds the body of the town mayor who has been murdered. Her best friend, Rosie, seems to be implicated in the murder, and Helen becomes more and more involved in trying to solve the case, even as more murders are committed. Also, she wants to solve the mystery of her husband’s departure and return. McMurdo-Wallis does a very good job of different voices, particularly the Irish brogue of Helen’s husband. The only problem is that she reads too slowly. But this is ultimately more of a cosy than a police procedural. A nice read, particularly with some of the heavier books I’ve been reading this month.
I enjoyed this story. It was very different and not easy to solve. Though I feel like the author was slightly misleading in order for you not to guess it right away. I did enjoy the fact that the main character was an older woman. You don't see that very often. It was slightly unbelievable the amount of stuff she got done/experienced in one day. But over all I enjoyed the book. I don't plan to reread it. I doubt I keep it. If you enjoy mysteries or Christian fiction you will probably enjoy this book. I loved the fact that it was a thinner book and easy to read.
