Tudo o que sei sobre o amor

Rate this book
Finalista do Creative Scotland Book of the Year Award, Tudo o que Sei Sobre o Amor capta de forma brilhante o êxtase, a confusão e a frustração das relações.

Ah I LOVED this book! It's so deceptive, how it explores the very nature of true love in the context of a story wound around several people in a Highland village. How love gets stale with familiarity and how people confuse newness and the thrill of meeting and getting to know someone as being true love, that they're The One, yet it will too go stale again after a while. So many different strands, questions and thoughts, and really strong, believable characters. Definitely going to check out more of this author's work.

Ania is a marriage counsellor and she thinks she knows everything about love. She can perfectly handle it until Maciek, a Polish man, turns up. From then, she isn’t sure anymore about love and a perfect marriage.

The marriage of Rose and Harry is in crisis. Rose cheated on Harry and they can’t deal with each other anymore, so they decide to contact Ania for help. Will they stay together?

Sam, Harry and Rose’s son, is fed up with his parents, but he meets Maciek with who he feels at ease and he too, has his own problems with love…

To be honest, this wasn’t really my cup of tea, tough I think this is a well written story and will please many other readers.
One of the reasons why this wasn’t really a book for me is that I’m too young and this is certainly a book for adults. Another reason is that I like stories about love, but not a whole book about it.
The story was told from different points of view, for example from Rose’s or Sam’s. The latter I found most interesting and the perspective of Maciek too. They complained the least, while I found that Rose complained far too much.
The end has an interesting twist and made the book more real to me. I have to say I felt sorry for Maciek, so this proofs that it was actually a good book. In another way I think it was a good decision of Rogerson , because it made the end easier.

People who like stories about love will certainly enjoy this book, but if you only want a little bit of love, than this isn’t the right book for you.

3/5 stars (Good, but not really my thing!)

(Let me note something briefly from the book as I might write a review later if I feel like it, haha. Also, the date I started and finished most books I'm gonna rate shortly was estimated/ the duration I read them. )

The story is set in Scotland, and luckily enough I got to read it when I travelled to Edinburgh in March this year, lol. What a lovely coincidence that I brought this book.
--I particularly like the words and characters' expression the writer use in book. It is funny and perfectly matches the situations. the story also seems real to me. I must say it is better than I expected.

Mie mi-a plăcut.

The interweaving stories of a handful of people in a year of their lives in a small Highland town of Evanton is handled really deftly here.
Each of the characters is struggling with making sense of new or old love, of re-finding or seeking to escape their place in relationships that may have gone stale and habitual, or chasing those that are new or forbidden; their stories are balanced really well throughout the book. The decision to feature one of them as a marriage guidance counsellor is genius, permitting the reader to experience a number of theories about love's place in the human experience.
Despite a certain lightness of touch in the language, there are moments for each character that represent real crisis points. Some of the dialogue, or internal thoughts of the characters is genuinely laugh out loud - we've all been there at some point, and the author captures their feelings really well. A really pleasant, easy read, but one that has a lot to say, much of it both refreshingly new in its observations, much all too recognisable, about love.

Being married for a long time, even to someone you love a lot, is not easy. We all live in our heads in worlds of our own creation constantly misunderstanding what others are thinking and feeling, and it’s a wonder we can successfully spend more than five minutes in another person’s company really.

I don’t know if I’ve ever read a book that manages to convey both the reality and the marvel of that as well as this one.

I feel this is as real as a story can get. Highlights flaws in characters that we can relate with in our own daily lives, and relationships. Opens up on the challenges of marriages, and illusions we, sometimes, carry into relationships. The ending was enlightening too. The author shows through her characters what really keeps relationships going.

There's this mix of psychological analysis, and plain story-telling, which nudges this book one step above any other story. I really liked this.

I recommend.

I liked how this focused on two different marriages but how this also showed the effects that it made to them as well. I did also like how we did get some Scots written this and how all the perspectives all stood out as different characters and I could easily tell which character I was reading about. This book does also read very easily which was a bonus for me.

However, I hated the cheating trope in this

didn't expect that ending to be honest, however this was a very average read - a lot of problematic stuff at every corner which i didn't enjoy. plus the humour in this felt forced.

the good things: the pace was fast which i quite liked and here and there some interesting perspective on things would appear. but that's about it.

I liked this well enough, I just felt it finished unfinished. Some characters very well fleshed out, others less so. Mmmm bleak, and uncaring. I don't know. Sorry undecided about this one, actually I was glad to finish it, maybe that was an indication!

The blurb on the back of the book and the Guardian's review on the front led me to believe that this book would be funny. If it was meant to be funny then the comedy was lost on me. I actually found it quite depressing. The characters are depressing and it's set in a small, depressing town in Scotland.
The book is easy to read, I finished it in 3 days and I was quite interested to see what happened at the end but this book is nothing special. It just made me feel a bit glum and not in a good way.

Because of the often only mediocre critics I read about this book, I didn't have too great expectations. Despite the bittersweet ending, I loved it. Its style remind me to a fast-forwarding movie, from which we see only napshots, especially in the beginning, then slowly it turns into an actual story.
I was happy about the Polish line, it brings back some very nice memories. :)
