With nowhere else to turn to after her marriage had fallen apart and then losing her job, Kate Gilmore decides it's time to return to her hometown in the Mallee in South Australia. Knowing she won't receive much of a reception from her mother, Edna or her brother, Doug she decides to drop in and see, Ken and Heather Wantage who she knows will be delighted to see her.

Ken and Heather live at The Narrows also known as the Wantage Farm. As soon as Kate entered their property thoughts came flooding back to her from her childhood. This was where Kate had spent a lot of her childhood and from the looks of it nothing had changed. Although it had changed as Ken and Heather's daughter, Megan was no longer there. Megan and Kate were friends growing up and, Kate remembers back to when they use to play in the cubby house and play hide and seek in the gardens. All that changed the day Megan was kidnapped on her way home from school she was only nine years old. She was never found and to this day they still don't know who took her or why.

Having only been back a short time, Kate is offered a job as a carer for old Harry Quickly on his property at Rosebud Farm. Kate quickly learns, Harry isn't the easiest of people to get along with and is very set in his ways, but in time, Kate will warm to Harry and accept his way of living. Kate’s relationship with her mother and brother has been strained to say the least over the years and after visiting them it seems nothing has changed. In between caring for Harry, Kate tries to find out what happened to Megan all those years ago. Will Kate be able to find closure not only for herself, but also for Ken and Heather or will her, Megan's kidnapping stay unsolved?

I absolutely LOVED this book. A beautifully written book that had me caught up in the storyline right from the start all the way to the very end. The twists and suspense in this book made it so much more than just a rural romance and one in which I thoroughly enjoyed and HIGHLY recommend.

Kate Gilmore was tired; tired of driving, tired of the mistakes she had made, tired of trying to work out her future – her marriage to Guy had been a mistake from the beginning. Reeling from the loss of her beloved Dad she had thought she was in love with Guy, but it didn’t take many months for her to realize that he wasn’t right for her. But it had taken a long seven years, and many promises to change by Guy until she finally realized she could take the situation no more. Leaving her teaching job and the house she had lived in with Guy, she headed back to her childhood home in the Mallee of South Australia.

The memories quickly hit her as she drove into the town; her best friend, nine-year-old Megan, the fun they used to have at school every day, then suddenly Megan was gone – kidnapped from the bus after school – the grief was still with her as Megan had never been found. Making her way to Megan’s childhood home, “The Narrows”, she surprised Heather Wantage, Megan’s Mum. Her delight in seeing Kate was gratifying; the years since she had seen her made Kate feel guilty. When Ken arrived home, he too was thrilled to see Kate.

When Kate was offered the position of carer out at old Harry Quickly’s property, Rosebud Farm, Kate accepted gratefully. She had had no idea how she was going to manage, and she certainly couldn’t go back home. Her mother and brother had never been close to her, they only looked out for each other. She had been frightened of Doug as a child and she had no desire to see him now.

As Kate settled into her new life, the past decided to put in an appearance. Suddenly the stories she had always believed were being tested; she was becoming more confused each day. With her new friend Max helping her, she decided the secrets needed to be brought out into the open. Would Kate finally find out the truth about Megan’s disappearance all those years ago? With murder, bushfires, and danger everywhere, where could Kate turn? Kate knew there was evil pursuing her...

This was a wonderful book. It certainly took me by surprise as I thought it was going to be the normal “rural romance”, but it’s not, it’s a “romantic suspense” with more of the suspense. The plot was excellent, while the twists and pace kept me glued to the pages until the very finish. Another great Aussie author I will be keeping my eye on. Highly recommended.

When Kate returns to the Mallee with her marriage in tatters, she knows exactly what sort of welcome she will get from family she hasn’t seen for years and those that she was closer to than her own family. The place is a source of childhood secrets, memories and loss especially of Megan the friend from her childhood who disappeared when the girls were nine. I was involved in this story from the beginning. Kate is a spirited character with a kind heart and I enjoyed meeting her as well as Heather and Ken, Megan’s parents. Kate’s mother Edna and her brother Doug are suitably obnoxious and you understand perfectly why Kate has been so reluctant to go near them.
Though trained as a teacher, she is down on her finances thanks to her ex husband Guy. So when she is offered a job as a carer for an elderly man she takes it. Harry is a crusty old character whose manner belies a soft heart that is often well hidden. She also encounters the young boy Maxie who seems to be always hanging around Harry’s place and Max, a relative of Maxie’s who keeps a bit of an eye on Harry and helps out from time to time.
Books about disappearances and secrets will always get my attention and though I worked out fairly early what had happened all those years ago, it didn’t lessen my enjoyment of the story. The author really brings the Australian setting and the characters to life. This was a thoroughly entertaining read with suspense a plenty. This story moves along at a cracking pace and I was right there with the characters from start to finish. I have to say as it got closer to the end I started turning pages faster.
My only problem is as often happens after a good book or selection of good books that I tend towards discarding anything else that doesn’t come up to standard and have done that with a couple since. I hadn’t read Kerry McGinnis before but will definitely seek out others by this author to read.

Mallee Sky is about love, family secrets and belief in yourself. Kate Gilmore decided to go back to Mallee after her marriage, and her job ended. On arrival at Mallee, Kate needs to find a job and lucky to meet Max, who gave her position as a housekeeper to his uncle, who lives on a remote property. Kate finely found to be happy until her past caught up with her. The readers of Mallee Sky will continue to follow Kate Gilmore to find out what happens.

Mallee Sky is another fantastic book by Kerry McGinnis. I engaged with the plot of this book from the first page, and I was sad when I read the last page. I enjoyed the way Kerry McGinnis put the twist and turns in the plot of this book. I love Kerry McGinnis's portrayal of her characters and how they intertwine with each other throughout this book. Mallee Sky is well written and researched by Kerry McGinnis. I like Kerry McGinnis's description of Mallee Sky's settings, allowing me to imagine being part of the book's plot.

The readers of Mallee Sky will learn about the dangers of bush fires for farmers. Also, understand the suffering parents go through when their child goes missing.

I recommend this book.

When Kate Gilmore's marriage and career falls apart, she decides to return to her home town. Arriving back forces her to confront the disappearance of her best friend twenty years previous, and her cruel, jealous older brother.

This book was a bit of a slowburner, but once the pace picks up, it is quite a gripping read. The setting of this story in a small rural town creates an eerie atmosphere...for in a small town it is difficult to keep secrets, and everyone knows everyone else's business.

I enjoyed this story, and hope to read more of Kerry McGinnis' stories.

Despite the abrupt changes in pov and the references to technology that wasn't in use in the era the story was set. This book was a good read. A great story line. A bit predictable, in the who-dun-it side if things. Enough mystery to keep you interested to the last page and a good clean romance element. Not bad.

Omg what an amazing story. Loved this from cover to cover. The story of a20 year mystery has you on your toes to the end. Kate was a beautiful person looking after old Harry and taking on little Maxie. Her family tragedy over the years finally came to an end when she finds out the truth about her family. Loved this book and can't wait to read others. ❤️❤️

I really enjoyed this Aussie story, especially as I know it is all so familiar to the author. It's plausible and interesting, with likable characters (except for the baddies) and great descriptions of the land and lifestyle.

I am slowly progressing through KM's collection...another easy read on the outside couch whilst the sound of humid rain on the vista akin to a row of derwents !!
The writing is very descriptive transporting the reader to the location set for the mystery.

I really enjoyed this novel. It had drama and romance with likeable characters and a believable villain. Kerry is good at “spinning yarns “with Australian content.

A nice easy, mystery, murder, farmer, romance sort of story. Bit predictable, good page turner and better than TV!🧐

Kates' marriage and job have failed so she heads back to the only other place she's ever called home to a family that didn't miss her and a 20 year old mystery.

This was such a good read and an unexpected one for me. I haven't read a lot of Aussie authors and I'm now thinking I might need to read more because the last few I have read have been great. Malle Sky was a great Aussie book that reminded me of a time before people were chained to their mobile phones and social media. I loved that even though you knew who the "bad guy" was you were still involved enough in the story to see how it all unfolded. I also love that it wasn't a massively over the top dramatic ending; i.e. it was believable.

I will look for more novels by Kerry McGinnis and highly recommend Mallee Sky.

Loved Kerry McGinnis's first books and this didn't disappoint. Although somewhat predictable on the "who done it" side of things, it still had me turning each page and wanting more. The only downside was with references to some of the technology which weren't available when the book was set. Email wasn't around in 1991 (certainly not in smaller rural towns or bigger cities) and back then we used "floppy discs" to back-up computerised work, not memory sticks (USB's weren't even a twinkle in the computer world's eye back then).

Just me being picky as, in my line of work back then, computers were something I used every single day!

Absolutely loved this book. Having spent many years in the Wimmera Mallee, where the sunrises and sunsets are as stunning as the colours in this cover suggest, the cover and title were what first grabbed my interest. I was not disappointed, especially when I realised the story had a strong missing persons theme - a subject close to my own heart. I would highly recommend this Australian fiction novel - the characters are real, the writing style is lovely and easy to read and the storyline carries you along from beginning to end. I cannot wait to read more of Kerry's novels.

The author paints a vivid description of life in country South Australia, I enjoyed the descriptions within this story. However, I did find the plot very slow and it seemed as though not a lot progressed until the end. Although predictable, it was readable. It's not a book I would highly recommend, or go back to read again.

Kate returns to her home after a marriage break-up. She takes the only job she can find in this small town and becomes a carer for a 90-something-year-old. Her childhood best friend went missing 20 years previous and hasn't been found. Kate has an brother she detests. A ten year old boy with learning difficulties comes and goes to the old man's place. Very enjoyable, easy-to-read.
