I have been a fan of Angel's work for some time now. His work has always impressed and this chapbook is no exception.

Twenty-four poems are on offer here - each as remarkably good as the next and, as a collection, speak of the author's skill and craft. He broaches subjects such as fatherhood, divorce and death.

"Last Communication" was my personal favourite.

It is true that Angel Zapata wields a sharp sword of poetic, often dark, literary talent. In his chapbook, “An Offering of Ink and Feathers,” this truth is blindingly so. These twenty-four poems enlighten on the challenges, hardships, and certainties gained through rugged introspection with an innovative clarity generally overlooked in most poetry.

“Pronunciation” begins with a loss in bearing, the inherent need for direction and sanctuary. “Taffy” elucidates the sting of reality, the inexorable ruin of life, and after the deepness of that fate, Zapata deftly positions “The Hole Truth,” next, a quiet reminder that the physical is only a vessel. This theme carries through poems of love, marriage, and the little things that construct trust and insight in everyday life. In “Splitting Adams,” we return to the honesty of youth, truths learned and lived in “Cycles,” that are then brought to life in “The Tenacity of Kites and Dragons.” At “Sandy Hook,” we detour into our own deafening destiny, the finality of the end, but “Signs, Songs, and Services” foreshadow this sorrow, bring to light wisdom and meaning. “Steering,” takes us back to the present, knotting the journey into an ordinary moment that in Zapata’s last piece, “An Offering of Ink and Feathers,” we realize the journey, in heart and mind, is always just beginning.

Poetry transcends all works of writing. It is the structure of nonfiction and the seeding of genre fiction. Angel Zapata already knows this and has crafted a remarkable collection of poems that you’ll want to reread again and again. One might say he’s ahead of his time.

I've had the privilege of being published in several anthologies and zines with Angel Zapata. His works are among the first that I read. Invariably, his work is among the best, if not THE best of an entire anthology.

An Offering of Ink and Feathers gives readers a deep, personal view of Angel. The poetry is obviously and truly heartfelt. Some will haunt you for a long while - "Taffy", especially, for me.

"Stain of Stolen Words"

Zapata's words provoke thought and emotion whether he's writing horror or kindling poetry. There are several poems in this collection that touched me deep down inside and I was thinking of them for days. My personal favorites are: My Wife is a Peculiar Bird, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Brood, Back to Formula, Space Between Fingers, and Offering of Ink and Feathers.

This is a must read.
