Scooter Browne had returned from Vietnam. The Battle of Hue’ had left its mark. It was a mark less delible on his soul than the Marine tattoo inked inside his right forearm. One horror filled day in Vietnam now drove him for justice. Four desperate faces tormented his sleep, their spectral images relentless as the swarms of no-see-ums on the Savannah River of his youth. In 1978 Scooter buries a box on a desolate South Carolina island. The next morning he drops an envelope in a mailbox. Within three months Scooter is dead, a seemingly innocent victim of a senseless robbery. Years later Jackson Day is spending his summer polishing up his newly renovated lakeside home in Austin, Texas. He hasn’t seen his old lover, Reagan Browne, in two years when she shows up on his dock. When Reagan’s younger sister Katy goes missing while digging into their late father’s life, Jackson joins Reagan in the search for Katy. A desperate journey hurtles them into the mysterious past of the girls’ father, Scooter Browne, whose life collided unexpectedly with evil. Piecing together clues Katy had discovered, the couple begins to uncover deep secrets Scooter had kept. As they fear the worst, their frantic quest to find Katy takes them through the haunting Low Country islands of South Carolina, to Texas, Savannah, Georgia, and back in time to Vietnam. As Jackson and Reagan connect the past and present, they uncover ghastly crimes spanning over thirty years, and run straight into the face of power and depravity.
5 stars!! In this book, the author has great detail describing all 3 cities, Hilton Head, Austin, and Fort Worth. The author captivates the reader and pulls you into the story and really makes you feel like you are there witnessing the story unfold. The author gave much insight into his characters. The characters of Katy Browne, Jackson Day, and Reagan Browne feel like friends you know. I love how the story is so suspenseful and keeps you guessing. I also love how the author went back and gave the background information so it kept you engaged. I will definitely be recommending this book to all my friends and family! I can't wait to see what the next installment has in store for Reagan and Jackson!
I like how the author gives bits and pieces of information from the deceased character's point of view throughout the book. I really enjoyed this even though I'm not a big fan of mystery novels.
Quick, predictable read....What really intrigued me were the landmarks which the author so meticulously categorized. We had spent the last two Aprils on Hilton Head.
