Alex and The Gruff

Rate this book
This is the tale of a polite and well-mannered boy named Alex who, after being abducted, develops an incredible bond with an angry and foul mouthed doll called The Gruff who teaches young Alex how to find his voice.

When Alex wakes bound in a wooden coffin to manic cursing and abusing, he finds something he’d never imagined having, a true friend. In the days that follow, a small oddly tempered doll called The Gruff will teach Alex how to say no, how to sharpen his claws and how to kill a man.

And a triangle of deception will leave Alex wondering who the real victim is.

DNF.
I made it to page 204. Obviously not for mr. 5000 words where 100 words would have better portrayed Alex’s Story.

To see if the writing got any better or the POV changed “out of Alex’s head” I went forward to page 521. More of the same diarrhea of words

I hated the style of writing too much to actually want to read the story

Whoa, this is definately a tale of horror!
Where to start reviewing this tale? The story starts off by giving us a view of the world through the eyes of the little boy Alex. I find this part endearing (albeit somewhat disturbing), being a parent myself. However, as the story progresses and Alex winds up in the dungeon, the events grow increasingly darker. This Gruff persona puts the reader constantly off-balance: is he nice, is he bad, is he a victim? The truth seems to twist and turn on every page, which makes this a bona fide page-turner. Highly recommended (for people who are not easily shocked).

was a tale of horror which left me feeling unsettled, I did enjoy the voice of Alex at the start and that voice proved to be very powerful when he is kidnapped. it's a story which I think will stay with me a while as left me with far more questions than answers.

Some messed up stuff in here! But it's the type of messed up that I like.

Just another endless cycle. In the end I was hopin', but I should've known that it would end the way it did.

Gruff wins again this time!

Wow! A definite mind blow! More psychological terror than anything. Just who is the true bad guy here? The Man or Gruff? Looking forward to the next book to see if Alex can break the cycle or continue it as it seems right now.

Pretty good book, about an evil little doll that gets a man to kidnap children and then do horrible things to them, and then gets the child to kill the man who kidnapped them, the ending was good...
