Landing a summer job with the girl of his dreams is seventeen-year-old Andrew Kendrell's fantasy come true. Daniela Rosen is perfect — beautiful, flirty, fun. Unfortunately, she's also taken. Andrew can't believe his luck when she's dumped by her boyfriend and turns her sights on him. But his new love has a hidden agenda, and it spirals him toward a life-altering decision.
My passion is writing! What could be more delicious than inventing new characters and seeing where they take you?
I am blessed to live in Indiana, a state I share with many Amish communities. (I find the best spices, hot cereal, and good cooking advice at an Amish store not too far away.)
I've lived in Honduras, Grand Cayman, and Costa Rica. One of my favorite activities is exploring other cultures. My husband, Paul, and I have two grown children and five precious grandchildren. I love to hole up in our lake cabin and write -- often with a batch of popcorn nearby. (Oh, and did I mention dark chocolate?) And I can often be found walking the beaches of Costa Rica.

Player is a short story in the Ocean Mist young adult series by Brenda Maxfield. I enjoyed this short story and liked how even with just a little time to get to know the characters, you felt like you could relate to them.
In Player we begin with seeing what the typical morning is like for the main character Andrew. Andrew’s mother is one that enjoys a good time and does not care whom she brings home or that her son knows what she has been up to. She further encourages her son to make sure that he doesn’t spend his entire summer working and to remember to have some fun.
Fun for Andrew is getting to know more about the new girl at his summer job at the surf shop. She is beautiful and fun to be around and he would like nothing more than to get to ask her out. Once he does take the chance, he is rewarded by finding out that he is not the “Player” in this story, which leads him to make a decision on how he will always approach women and the art of dating.
Player is the prequel short-story to “Buried Truth” and I highly recommend reading them both together so that you know how they tie in together. I read Player first and then Buried Truth and found myself re-reading Player once again because I felt I could relate to the character Andrew so much more by reading both.
All in all it is a very good short story and introduces you to the town and lifestyle of the place called “Ocean Mist”. I am looking forward to reading more by this author and hope to revisit Ocean Mist again very soon.
I received a ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Player, the prequel to Buried Truth, bursts onto the scene with Andrew dealing with his mother’s current preoccupation. The one thing that will take Andrew away from his family troubles is Daniela. Andrew falls for this beautiful girl from a rival high school, and that’s where his real troubles begin. Narrated in Andrew’s voice, this novella immediately hooked me. When I read the next book in this series, Buried Truth, I could understand Andrew and rooted for him all the way. Well-drawn characters and a realistic setting make this an engaging read.
Teenager Andrew leads a really dysfunctional life, and he knows it. He escapes by going to work and perfecting his photography. Work suddenly becomes more interesting with the appearance of Daniela. Things start to look up for Andrew when Daniela's football-playing boyfriend dumps her, but he soon learns some hard truths. This is a prequel to Brenda Maxfield's Buried Truth, and the angst in this short story, as well as the questions raised at the end, really make me want to continue reading! Well done.

Andrew is a young man who wants a girlfriend. He has her picked out. Then he finds she already has a boyfriend. But she is a flirt. This is a sweet story that has you hoping things turn out well for Andrew, he is a nice guy. In the end he learns a valuable lesson and hopes he does not get into the same situation again.
