Amber Kell

Amber Kell has made a career out of daydreaming. It has been a lifelong habit she practices diligently as shown by her complete lack of focus on anything not related to her fantasy world building.

When she told her husband what she wanted to do with her life he told her to go have fun.

During those seconds she isn't writing she remembers she has children who humor her with games of 'what if' and let her drag them to foreign lands to gather inspiration. Her youngest confided in her that he wants to write because he longs for a website and an author name—two things apparently necessary to be a proper writer.

Despite her husband's insistence she doesn't drink enough to be a true literary genius she continues to spin stories of people falling happily in love and staying that way.

She is thwarted during the day by a traffic jam of cats on the stairway and a puppy who insists on walks, but she bravely perseveres..

She also writes under the name Mikela Q. Chase

Though not perfect, it was pretty good and interesting until 70%:

- Interesting world-building,
- Great main character: the beautiful and feminine but kick-ass fighter Jory,
- A baby dragon pet,
- Promising conspiracies and conflicts,
- Extensive and seemingly complicated connections between the characters.

Far from perfect: the romance. And not just because it’s insta love – you know when insta-lust equals love and a lifetime relationship – let’s not go there, it’s a dragon-mating thing. I’m not opposed to insta-love in paranormal romances when it is executed plausibly.
But here I didn’t feel the chemistry and connection between the characters. Maybe a little between Jory and Val, but there is nothing between Jory and Rai. And all the overused endearments can’t substitute affection and intimacy.

Oh, and what about that political and social rivalry between Val and Rai mentioned at the beginning of the story? It is just dissolved in the fog of desire.

Val and Rai’s characters are not adequately drawn, and sometimes even Jory’s character is inconsistent.

There is an intrigue against Jory by his own family, but this storyline is very weak too.

And finally, just like Jory, I’m very unsatisfied with this divided ménage.

Too bad, because the base of the story is interesting, the mate-hunting workshop is a great idea and I really liked the black baby dragon, whose name was… oh boy… Precious.

(Mild spoilers.) Total guilty pleasure. You gotta love a book where the (totally gorgeous, fashion-plate) hero arrives on a planet for the "mate hunt" and manages to score his first hook-up (with a totally built super-hunk dragon-man) right at the space-port! WHICH on this planet come equipped with comfort rooms (beds and lube included) for the convenience of horny travelers. Extra points for including multiple scenes of the hero going shopping. Seriously, what's not to love here.

Oh color me happy, I went in thinking this was a dragon paranormal m/m story but I actually got one of my favorite things.
This has a little bit of intrigue, an acid spewing baby dragon with a temper and two royal dragon shifters who are very possessive and one small, pretty kick-ass Jory, a goddess Mother and two more stories in this series, what more can I want?
It's light, quick and a total guilty pleasure read...now I'm off to read the next one!

The potential was there but nothing is developed, the writing had the feel of a young adult book, though the sex content fixes it as an adult read.

I like the idea behind the story, there's just not enough here to hold my attention, I rolled my eyes a bit at the goddess because really, was there need for manipulation on high?

The characters - sweet cinderfella (but with own funds) sent away on a mate hunt, immediately meeting tall handsome and masterly, followed by meeting tall handsome and kingly. It's all insta-love-lust-bond, there's nothing more to them than that; it's an enjoyable bit of fluff, but don't expect any deep understanding or feelings. If you can accept it for what it is, then you'll do okay.

There's a fair share of honey and baby throughout the book, and nearly everything is sweet.

The threesome vibe is weak; the two big powerful dragons are wary of touching each other but quickly okay with sharing their bonded, which cancels a whole load of steamy potential.

At least one whole star is for Precious, who is ..precious. But why wasn't she there when she could have actually been a help? A crap guard-dragon but cute.

Guilty pleasure -- hot dude (that everyone wants) gets done the moment he steps off the ship. Plus, mating dragons. I think that covers it.

Jory is the youngest son of the king of a futuristic planet. Being the youngest and gay, he should be not an obstacle to his siblings' ambitions to the throne, but Jory is well-liked by the people and by his father. And so the king decides to send his son in a "mate-searching" mission: he will travel from planet to planet till he will not find the right man for him, a man wealthy and power enough to protect Jory. Problem is that Jory is not exactly the man who likes to be dominated.

Anyway he agrees to his father's plan since the first planet he will visit will be Dragait, the native earth of shape-shifter dragonman, men well known to be real Alpha males, and Jory likes that type of men. Being pretty and cute, as soon as he dismounts on the new planet, he meets Val, a wealthy duke, who is probably his mate. Val doesn't waste time to mate with Jory, but the mating rules expect that Jory has to mate with another dragonman, and the God of Mating will allow the tattoo of the real mate to appear on Jory's body. And so, even if with regret, Val allows Jory to go out and find another man.

The second time, Jory does even better and attracts no less than the king of the planet. Rai is even more possessive than Val, and has no doubt that it will be his mark to appear on Jory. Both Val than Rai are Alpha male, but Val is the silent type, and instead Rai is the growling version. While reading the book, I was really perplexed since I really wasn't able to choice between Rai and Val, both of them were appealing and I liked both of them. The problem was that, even if the men were both attracted by Jory, it seemed impossible to have a bond between them, and so a menages seemed not proposable. And so I liked even better the solution with which the author came out.

The story is not very long, a novella, and it has still some minot fault, probably due to the fact that the author is young, but still, I found that between this one and the other I read, Amber Kell is a nice new voice in the M/M romance overview. It's obvious that she is also a voracious reader of gay romance, since she respects all the main rules of a gay romance written by a woman for women, and her characters are cute or strong, or both. The Dragonmen series is a good mix of paranormal and futuristic (back to the future subgenre), that winks to similar books in the genre, first of all the Sci-Fic Regency series by J.L. Langley, and so if you liked that one, you could try this one.

Outstandingly amiture is the best description of this book.

I read this hoping for really hot sexy times, all I got was awkwardly quick "he put it in" sexual encounters. Jory (yes his name is Jory like the Calms charecter) is ridiculously perfect, and beautiful, and kind, and everyone loves him (sound familiar? Man if I have a male kid I need to name him Jory his life will be crazy but he will be perfection) anyyyywayyyy this book was 1/2 baked at best. It felt far too much like a 12 year old writing their first fanfiction. There was a time in my life where this would work for me but I just need more. Either super hot sex scenes or a plot that's not full of holes, and makes sense. This had neither of those qualities. But hey I finished it? That's something +.5 stars I have to stop reading this author, I think this will be my last one.

Not a bad Dragon story, but nor was it anything special.

This is the typical mate mine lets have sex fic. Pretty obvious from the start who was going to mate with who.

The ending was a bit of a let down, not enough build up and over to fast, not to mention the clichéd villain.

But it was saved slightly by Precious. Now she is my ideal Dragon. Although I do wonder where she was in Jory's real hour of need.

Overall an easy read, more a 2 star but Precious pushes it up to a 3 lol.

4.5 stars.

I adore it......it was smutty and sexy and had a great plot.

Only negative is the beginning is rush, I would have loved another 10,000 words or more to do some world building before they had sex.

I had a lot of fun reading it :)

Changed to 5 Stars when reread July 2013

Series was so much fun the second time I read it and whats even more impressive is that all 4 books are quite different, there was no repetitiveness.

I loved this book just as much the second time as I did the first. I loved both Jory and the baby dragon that he bonded with. I really liked Val. King Rai on the other hand was not my favorite of the three. A bit too overbearing and controlling for me but then he's a king so I guess it's to be expected. Overall a cute short story will little angst.

leave it to Joriah, a son of a goddess and a galatic king to find not just one mate during the mate hunt but two mates. the king of the planet and a royal Duke third in line of royal succession. not only the but he bonds with a rare black dragon queen. He get ambushed by his sister in law who is business partner with his uncle, a slaver that Joriah is trying to put out of business. He need the two mate to protect him but don't think he is a sub he is an alpha in his own right. so a three alpha bond is rare but powerful.

Read this pre-Goodreads time. I know it involves possessive growly muscle men vying for the attention and hand in marriage of a delicate beautiful male who came to the dragonmen planet shopping for a husband. I could still remember how the story goes but it wouldn't be fresh enough to attempt a review on it. So I'll just rate it and chuck it back to the back shelf.

I liked this one. Tor seems like he's getting matched and maybe the brother. I liked the little dragon. The mates were secondary, although I hope they pop up again once they've gotten used to being mates. Jory's reaction to being mated was funny. Looking forward to what's next in the series.

Stories with menage relationships are hard for me, and there really wasn't much of a chance here to see how the characters worked out the dynamics of the relationship. I did like the concept of the "mate hunt."

The idea behind the book was good. I especially liked that the author made the university realistic with both homo- and hetro- sexual couples. (Unlike some universe were everyone in the current generation is gay w/o addressing where future children will come about) However the author need help with character and world development.

I could tell the author was trying to create an original universe but she kept infusing her universe with modern colloquialism and syntax. That may be possible in a new world, but this author did not do it successfully. Also, the behavior of the characters were not consistent with the the person she was describing. For ex, the prince was someone who spent his mornings everyday with a tailor. He was known for his fashion; so well known that his ex burned all his clothes for revenge. Yet when he went to replace his wardrobe he claimed he never thought of how his clothes made him look. That is highly unlikely. Another example was when he was uncomfortable about having guards, yet as a prince he had personal guards all his life and he mentions (later) that he misses his old guards. There are many other examples I could have mentioned that followed on this theme. Not only were there contradictions, the book ended without a conclusion. Not a cliff hanger but no ending. One second he is being saved and the next

Therefore it only gets 1 star.

As an introduction to the series, Mate Hunt gives readers some hot, possessive alpha male dragonkin (dragon shifters) who are both drawn to the same man during their planet's mate hunt. The premise of the story and series is unique in that, while there are dragon shifters finding their mates it is taking place in a world that has a touch of sci-fi but with a modern-day feel. There are traditions within the dragonkin societies of the planet, some that those from other planets are aware of and others that have visitors-like Jory-scrambling to learn how to navigate this unique world.

The immediate attraction that we see is easily attributed to the idea of mates, a concept that I have no problem with at all in this setting of paranormal/fantasy-this is actually one of my guilty pleasure favorites. I do confess that while I felt the pull between Jory and Val, I didn't really feel the same about Jory and Rai, and the end result with the gap between Val and Rai did make me feel like their trinity was a bit unfinished.

But this is a good start to the series, and with a shot of drama thanks to part of Jory's family, Mate Hunt kept me immersed in the story and piqued my interest for the rest of the series. 3.5 stars for Mate Hunt, and I'd recommend this to M/M paranormal/dragon shifter romance fans 18+ for adult language and M/M sexual content.

Series Review: Hot men, hotter dragons... what's not to love?
Dragon Men by Amber Kell is a series of thoroughly entertaining novellas. The characters are sexy, engaging and easy to love. With a nice mix of drama, erotic romance and adventure, Ms. Kell has mastered the art of short stories. I gobbled up this series one right after the other and am virtually tapping my fingers for more.

Mate Hunt:
I loved the sizzling give and take between the three main characters. The animosity Val and Rai have for each other is the contrast to the passion they share with Jory. The drama within Jory's family is just what Mate Hunt needed to move the story beyond the realm of erotica. I especially enjoyed the scenes between Jory and his father.

This is for the "New" release edition.
This was better, quite a bit was added to it. (Not as much as the page numbers let you think, old one was like 55 pages and new 175 pages.) The new one is double spaced so it seems like more.

The story did not seem to jump as much, some things were explained more, new people added.

And for many who thought the first one ended rather quick there is an Epilogue that gives us a little more of an ending with their relationship

I still love the pet dragon "Precious" she has a couple more scenes also.

DRAGONS! That was my motivation for buying this one and it's absolutely my favorite thing about it. I enjoyed this so much more than I expected to--perhaps more than I ought to have. But it's about dragons! Not only does Jory end up married to dragon shifters, but he ends up being adopted by a full-blood dragon pet. So awesome!

This had the bits of shifter lore that intrigue me, and that totally work for me when done well. Plus, it also was the most intriguing mix of sci-fi elements and medieval castles and kings and warriors. So fun!

There were a few things that really didn't work for me, but on the whole, this story was just so much fun to read! It's definitely going on the guilty pleasures shelf, and I'm sure I'll return to it whenever I need a nice, sweet, fun read.

Joriah's father, the Galactic King, sends Joriah to the Dragon Planet, Dragait, for the annual mate hunt. The King fears for Joriah's life because Joriah's brother, and heir to the throne, Detrius, may be trying to kill him. I really liked the concept of this book and enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. On Dragait, Joriah meets two potential mates, and while I felt his connection with one of his mating prospects, I didn't with the other. This became a bit too much of an "insta-love" story for me to really sink my teeth into. But I did like it overall, I just would have liked a little more development between the mates.

3 1/2 stars. I really liked it. I wish some things had been explored more, but since it is the first in a series, I'll just have to hope for those tidbits in the next book. But OHHHH I wanted to see Val and Rai get a little more action together. I haven't looked to see if the next book has new MC, or if it continues with these. I hope we haven't seen the last of them in either case. Thank goodness for the Goodreads groups. They have pointed me towards many books, that I may not have found on my own.

è morto in tre secondi.
