This book describes what human beings are capable of doing to other human beings when democratic values have been destroyed and replaced by an ideology advocating intolerance, hate and violence. The book presents the facts about the Holocaust and attempts to explain how the unimaginable became reality.
I picked this up for free while I was visiting the Stockholm Synagogue in Sweden a while back. It's a well-done production, using photos and diary excerpts to try to bring the six million dead into focus as individual rather than collective tragedies. As a grandchild of survivors I don't particularly need the Holocaust humanized for me; I grew up with these sorts of stories as my daily bread. But I'm glad the books are being written for those who do. And I did learn things about the Swedish role in the war that I hadn't known before, as none of my family connections are with the Nordic states.
(I still need to look up the Jewish refugees who are namechecked as having "contributed to post-war Sweden": Harry Schein, Georg Riedel, Joachim Israel, and Erwin Leiser. These are listed with no further context, so I assume they're more famous names in Sweden?)
Tell Ye Your Children: A Book About The Holocaust In Europe 1933-1945 is by The Living History Forum and Stephane Bruchfeld and Paul S. Levine. “This book was commissioned by the Swedish Government as part of its education program.” It is intended as an overview of the Holocaust to provide parents information to begin talking to their children about this event in history. However, it is only a starting point as the history of the Holocaust is so vast and so confusing to many. In creating this book, the authors know that the numbers of five or six million or more is something that cannot be totally understood; but putting a face to some of those numbers makes the information more real. Therefore, they have included individual stories of victims, perpetrators, rescuers, and survivors throughout the book to personalize the history. The book is not designed for use by children or even middle school students; but for adults and high school students to tive them an overview of the event. It is written in such a way that most people could understand it.
This book is available free for download in Swedish, English, Finnish, Persian, Spanish, Turkish, and Arabic. It was given out freely to visitors of the Jewish Museum in Stockholm. The copies in English had all been given out, so I picked up one in Swedish, which I hope to read some day.
Even if I have read quite a bit about the topic, there still was plenty of new information, as well as touching stories, accounts, documents and photographs. Great educational tool for adults, too graphic for children as far as I would assess.
Everyone at school was given a copy of this book for free when it was released. It tells of the horrific events during the WWII in a good, educational way.
It's an important book and we all have to keep remembering and talk about what happened after the last survivors are gone. That's why this book should be handed down from generation to generation, to never forget.
