A tragic event forces seventeen-year-old Kat Parker to move two thousand miles away from her cushy life in Malibu, California to a simpler one in Slidell, Louisiana, where she falls for the beautiful Mason Dugas and the Broussard's--the family who has taken her in. But Kat fears she may lose them all when the secret she's been keeping is revealed and she's suddenly summoned back to Malibu to settle unfinished business.
Disclaimer: Though I had purchased this eBook over a year ago and it has been patiently waiting for my attention since, I volunteered to listen to the audio book version for review. What a happy win-win coincidence - a book off Mount TBR and an honest review freely given! As this is a review, not a summary of the story, please refer to the book blurb or look to other reviewers' summaries for a plot description -- this review will be kept spoiler free.
This is a 275 page, or just under a 6-hour, new adult romance with a bit of mystery & suspense and a few HEAs. This does not end with a cliffhanger, but can conceivably be turned into a series with additional books focused on other characters or couples. The audio book was narrated by Meghan Kelly and she is the reason this 3-star "good book" has been bumped up to a 4-star rating. Please do not interpret that negatively; a three-star rating is a good book.
While I cannot speak to the grammar/punctuation editing as I listened to the book and didn't read it, the characters were well drawn, full of life and believable. I felt for our Hero and our Heroine in their situations, in their connection and their separation and so on. The opening chapter successfully created my interest, the comradery among the characters held my interest and the "secret" kept my interest piqued. Ms Kelly added accent, tone and emotion to the black typeface. She performed well with the varied voices, male and female, younger and older. Thank goodness for her southern accents to help keep me grounded in Louisiana.
The 16- to 18-year old teenagers, making up the majority of the cast, behaved older than their years turning this possibly Young Adult story into a New Adult. The alcohol consumption, cussing and premarital sex definitely moves this story away from YA to NA categorization.
Personally, I want characters to have common sense, intelligence (for their age) and manners, who are wholesome, generally honest and vibrant. It is a turn-off for me to read stories cast with inconceivably naive (for their age), flippant, thoughtless, self-centered, and/or emotion-driven characters. To have a variety of characters is all well and good, but to have the hero and heroine so faulted makes the story unbelievable, unrealistic and illogical. Miss Davis has created a cast of believable characters. While our Heroine needs to be a minor for a certain element of the mystery portion to make sense, our teenagers come across as being 20-somethings. Though it is my personal opinion that 16- to 18-year-old children should not have free reign with alcohol, even if Mama does keep their keys and only allows the consumption of alcohol in front of her, this aspect of the story did not sit well with me, but I could still hold with it because of the kind of open parent Mrs. Broussard was and that she was offset by the parenting style of her sister, Marion.
If you enjoy New Adult, even if you are well beyond the "new adult" age group, I think you will enjoy your time spent reading this book. If you have the ability to listen to this story, I think you will enjoy this story more because of the narrator's performance. This is a light, easy, interesting read. If you only have short bits of time available to read, this book can be put down and picked up easily without losing track of events in the story line.
I liked this book for its storyline, intense romance, and some unexpected thrills and danger. The author is good at keeping you in the dark regarding why Kat is in Louisiana for the summer. You know something serious has happened but can't quite pinpoint what it is. Kat and Mason had some intense chemistry but this also happened to be a bit of a drawback because it was so over-the-top from the very beginning. There were a couple things that I found problematic. Characters were described as shrieking something, for instance, when within the context of the situation, people wouldn't shriek. One other thing: it seemed that none of the teen characters worked or had any responsibilities during the summer except to hang out and have fun. This just seemed incredibly unrealistic. Despite these issues, I was entertained enough that I am interested in reading another book from this author.
The book is simple, easy, very nice written love story and I would prefer a more 'thrilling' ending, because it kinds of loosen in the end unfortunately.
However, I was lucky to hear Meghan Kelly (thanks again Meghan for this book and 'Tarnished'by Becca Jameson) and it was AWESOME!!!! She has a wonderful voice, she gives life to the characters and their attitudes. New Orleans, French Quarter, South attitude and accent MY FAVORITES by far!!!!! Fantastic performance (again and again) by Meghan Kelly!!!!
I really enjoyed it very much.
Thanks Jennifer Davis and Meghan Kelly for this book.
The book needs to be made into a movie. Rich, Malibu girl wearing Prada moves to the sticks of LA where she switches from mud facials to actually falling in the mud and cute short shorts to daisy dukes.
Despite my joke above, there is a good story behind the laughs and some more serious undertones regarding why Kat is really in LA. I really liked it because it was different from anything that I have read of recent. For a single book I totally loved it, it was a break from the norm and well written.
Ugh this book. Idk why I bothered - I guess to find out what happened with Kats dad.
This was the first time that I noticed and hated insta-love. There was no build up whatsoever, and I hated how back and forth Mason was. Plus I felt like there were some inconsistencies. Especially with characteristics.
The only thing I enjoyed was the mean girl, Dixie. Only because I love that type of drama against the heroine.
It also seriously bothered me that Dana, aka Momma, was so ok with teenagers drinking, fighting, having sex, and just being immature. So incredibly unbelievable.
2.5 stars. This was just okay for me. I didn't hate it, but I didn't feel like it brought anything unique to the table either, nor did it have any super likeable characters. I also felt some of the transition for Kat was a bit too seamless for the major move and lifestyle shift she made. There's a mystery, but it's one that I feel like I've read before at least once, maybe twice. I wouldn't recommend this book, but I'd still consider reading something else by this author.
T liked this audio book very much. It has a cast of 20-25 year olds but was not just for 20 somethings. It has some bad language and sexual content (nothing explicit) so not a YA book. It had a good story line, some mystery, young love and good family feel to it. I will read more from Davis.
I had a tough time getting through this book. There wasn't enough romance for me, definitely too clean. I need the steamy scenes! Mason was dreamy, though. Katara got lucky to find a catch like him. There was some mystery to the story, too, especially involving Katara's reason for moving to Louisiana.
Cute story about a rich girl and a country boy. I enjoyed seeing her be happy without all the money. She changed so much for the better. I loved the characters and the ending was perfect.
(Audio version) Meghan Kelly's soothing whispery voice and outstanding conveyance of various regional dialects immediately grabbed my attention and launched my excitement and anticipation for an exceptional read.
Kat, a recent high school graduate from California finds herself in an environment completely foreign to her. From a wealthy background in a clean, "civilized" world - she is now in the bayou of Louisanna - thrown in with a group of others her age with whom she is forced to conform. She is as much an oddity to them as they are to her. These are kids who have never experienced the luxeries Kat has been lucky to have had. No Prada, no Mercedes - for them it's tap water, togetherness and enjoying the land they live on. At this point in the book, the reader is unaware of what has forced Kat to this place and I am completely lost. I first go back to the first pages again and again looking for answers, when I find none, I check to see if this is #2 in a series. Since it is not I eagerly await the answers. I don't get them until the book is almost to it's end and I'm left still struggling throughout the book with WHY she should have to be there when her father is rich enough to provide home help or a nice trip to Tahiti or whatever. I get anticipation, I get build-up...but this created more diversion for me than a heightening of suspense.
In the beginning, Kat is a strong, likeable girl who despite the struggles of her new surroundings finds a way to fit in and make the best of it. She begins to see the ridiculousness of her former expensive lifestyle - how silly it is to carry a $600 bag when a $20 backpack would do just fine. I like her more and more.
I would recommend this more for older teens as it gets a little racy; in my opinion a little more sex and drinking than typical 17 year olds should be doing. I know very well that 17 year old drink and have sex, but the way Kat was acting was a little over the line (see spoiler). I kinda started to feel like it was too 'young' for me, though I do read alot of ya books and I don't think I'm a total prude old lady just yet. It just seemed Kat in particular was a little too ready to jump in bed with Mason, even stooping to horrible levels of manipulation to get him to do so (or just feel bad that he wouldn't).
Overall pretty good book. The beginning definitely outshone the remainder of the book. I didn't think the actual story lived up to the quality of the narration. This is a situation where I believe the reader brought a so-so book up to a little above average. I'd give the book itself 3 stars and the reader 4.5. I don't know if I would read another title by Jennifer Davis but I would for sure pick up an audio book narrated by Ms Kelly.
Just WOW ! I know this was more of a YA book. And I'm not even entirely sure how long its been sitting on my kindle. But yesterday I flipped through all the new ones to figure out what I wanted to read and well this one won. It was fabulously written. The author had my laughing out loud literally many a times throughout this wonderful book. Not only that but everything felt really, the way the characters talked in there bayou/southern way I started to go back to my own southern roots and oh course first thing I say to my bf was y'all and lets just say it was rather humorous that goofy look on his face. Continuing on, Food...Mid way through I had to stop and make a snack... The talk of southern foods (bayou, shrimp, craw fish etc) OHMYGOD! I was dying my poor stomach was a growling mess. A sandwich had too due because I couldn't take to much time away from my book. It was a nice change after all the adult romance and crazy syfy ive been reading lately. Characters were written so good I fell in love with the Broussard family and that included all of the others who weren't even in the family but really they were. The two sisters Bit and Shelby cracked me up both spit fire personalities, their boyfriends as well sure they didn't get as much writing about them but you still felt like you knew them. Mason and Kat... can I get a Swoon Their relationship seems doomed from the start just because Kat doesn't know how long she'll be Louisiana. But that doesn't stop them from trying.
A few times during the book I was telling myself I hoped/couldn't wait for a sequel (yes I knew it was a stand alone but) I wanted more of the characters, I just wasn't ready for it to end. I can definitely see myself re-reading this one. :) 4.5 Stars for this Amazing read! If you haven't read it I suggest picking it up its got everything you couldn't probably want and more in it. Well sweet and youthful but still :P
This book was full of laugh out loud moments. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t too sure about it in the beginning but i’m glad that I gave it a chance. I purchased the book thinking I’d read a couple chapters a day and ended up finishing it at 2 o’clock in the morning.
The book centers around a girl named Kat who leaves her home in Malibu after an accident happens to stay with a group of strangers (her father’s friends family) in Louisiana.. And of course, there was a super sexy love interest whose name is Mason. He’s your typical southern boy. Sweet and bad all at once. He and Kat have an instant attraction. However, instead of jumping straight into a relationship they took their time and you’re able to witness the relationship grow which had me rooting for them because I loved them together.
You’re also able to watch Kat grow. Her transition from Malibu to Lousiana wasn’t easy but that didn’t stop her from trying to make it work. She came out of her comfort zone and experienced new things (like four wheeling and eating frog legs), thanks to her new group of friends.
There was drama here and there, it wouldn’t be a small town without a jealous ex girlfriend involved but those moments are included in the LOL department.
What I liked most about this story was the self discovery involved because in the end Kat wasn’t the same girl that left Malibu. She was reformed and she was better because of it. Sometimes going out of your comfort zone and interacting with new people can be the best thing for a person.
With that being said, I genuinely enjoyed this story. It was a sweet, little escape that had me laughing, crying, and getting angry. But I loved every moment of it.
It's been two weeks since I finished this book and since then I read a few other books, so excuse me if I remember something wrong.
I bought this book because I wanted something fun and entertaining to read, and I can say, yeah, I got it all ;) I liked the characters, the mood, the story, and everything about it. Actually, I loved it :)
At first I was angry with Kat for being such a b*tch with the ex-girlfriend and lying about sleeping with Mason, but then I really got to like her because she was strong and she wasn't whiny - although she had every right to be, in her situation. She didn't even tell anyone what happend, thinking it's better if they don't pity her.
I loved the family and the endless teasing. The mother's character was really special, it seemed she was more than a mom, she was their best friend too. It reminded me of Gilmore Girls' Lorelai. The drinking thing was weird- I've never been to the US before but from movies and other books I assumed parents in general forbid underage drinking strictly even after their 18th birthday. Anyway she's cool, I hope I'll be a mother like her. Although I think she is right about letting them drink when she is there becase if she wouldn't they would drink without her knowing and that would be worse, I don't think it's good that she's letting them drink shots and kick themselves out. They drink way too much, almost every day, and that's how alcoholism developes.
Mason... I loved him :D No need to explain:) Definitley a MUST-READ! ;)
Kat Parker is your typical Malibu Barbie kind of girl. So when she is forced to leave behind all she’s ever known and move to a small town in Louisiana things get interesting. The story being as 17 year old Kat is headed to stay with family friends. She is in for a rude awaking when she realizes she is over dressed and out of place. The upside to this turn of events is Mason… dreamy Mason. She is instantly attracted to Mason and even though she tries hard not to like him she can’t help. Then add in the mix a jealous witch of an x-girlfriend. Yes things get heated and very interesting. Kat is starting to fit in as much as she can and is glad to gain some new friends. In this book you won’t know for awhile why it is that Kat is sent away which left me reading so fast because I really wanted to know why is she there? She keeps talking about how home sick she is and wanting to see her bff Olivia again. Then wham... we find out why. I love it! I loved the story and I loved the ending! Can you tell I loved it? Lol I hope this is not the last book we read about this group of funny and outspoken teens. I really enjoyed this book. I don’t know what it was about this story…maybe the humor of it or maybe it was because it was original. Nothing like what I have read before. I feel in love with the characters and this author.
This book was kind of interesting. I didn't read the synopsis before starting it, I just thought the cover looked interesting. It took forever for me to figure out how Kat was supposed to be, and everyone else. I felt like most of the book was ind of vague and I was constantly wondering what is going on. I didn't really see a strong love connection between Kat and Mason, but I could see they liked each other. I just didn't think their feelings got to the love point by the time she had to go back to Malibu. Still I did enjoy the first part of the book when she was in Slidell.
Once she gets back to Malibu everything happens very quickly. At one point I looked to see how many pages I had left, and I only had 15 pages but nothing had even started to be resolved yet. The last 15 pages just had so much that just happened and resolved itself so quickly it was just too easy. The bad guys were good up until that point and then suddenly they were just taken down in an instant? Really? So bad guys taken down, everyone okay and the whole living on opposite coasts from each other resolved itself nice and neat in 15 pages. I wish the book would have been longer to really take the time to tell the story. It just felt incredibly rushed, especially since the time in Slidell took up most of the book.
I don’t know, just neither storyline really interested me and I really didn’t care for most of the characters.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
A very enjoyable read! 1st, let me say I read / listened to this book in audio format via audible.com. This book is perfect in audio as it has loads of southern accents, excitement, fear, romance & you can hear it all in the multiple voices! All the little things that make a book better, that I can't do myself. Kat, a young girl who lives in California and ventures off to Louisiana, where she makes new friends & finds love. Kat works really hard hiding a secret about who she is & 1 day sees it (her secret) on the TV 1 day with all her new friends watching too. Kat finds love too, but Mason doesn't want someone who will leave him & go back home. With loads of action, romance, adventure and danger, this book will not disappoint you! The voices alone are priceless! Try the sample of the audiobook out @audible.com to see what I mean. The author, Jennifer Davis did a great job at getting my attention & keeping it! The plot is well written & was a really nice surprise ending too! The narrator Meghan Kelly did a superb job delivering this book with all her multiple voices, accents & excitement. For me, the voices make the story complete! Kudos to both ladies! Well done.
This book was a cute, fun, quick read. There was one character that was a total bi*** and needed to be taken down a peg or two, "buck up, rich girl. We do sh** different down here. Get use to it of get lost." Ugh Dixie pain in my a**. The woman Kat is staying with while in Louisiana is a hoot, "my rule about drinkin' is, it has to be done here under my supervision," Dana said. "And if you drink, you don't drive." Mason I liked him but sometimes I just didn't think they boy had his head screwed on right and that's when Kat puts him in his place, "she threw freezing water on us yesterday and called me a sl**!" I lowered my voice. "We almost had sex last night, and today you're giving your ex-girlfriend rides. I knew I'd be thanking Garrett for stopping us. I've never been more grateful for anything in my life." Also I just Mason confuses me he's sweet and nice one minute and the next he's pi**ing me and Kat off, "so, if sleeping with me wasn't right, why did you do it last night? Did you feel sorry for me? Did your conscious force you to pity eff the girl with all the problems?" I'll say this I love when my female characters have balls and boy did Kat have balls.
YA book about 17 yo Kat who is sent to Slidell, LA from her home in Malibu due to a family incident... which you don't learn about until pretty far in. Slidell is the home of her father's friend's sister and her huge family.
It starts as a fish out of water story.... this kid is obviously going through something and she's privileged and self-centered and the kids in Slidell just aren't so much. So it's like 90210 meets those duck people, I suppose.
While in Slidell, she meets Mason and there's insta-love. For me that's where the story starts to fall apart when it should get better. I have no idea what makes this couple work and I hate stories like that. There's a bit too much drama between these two which is probably appropriate given the ages of the characters.
The bigger issue for me, is that last half of the book where we learn what happens, she figures out her issues with Mason, and then has to fly home to help solve the mystery... it felt too contrived and unrealistic.
It does feel like there could be other books in a series featuring the other characters... that whole Garrett/Dixie thing was weird and needs resolution.
This was a very sweet book. Loved Mason! From the minute Kat first sees him, it's basically love at first sight for both of them. The group of family and friends in Slidell are so much fun. What a great group to hang around with. Their conversations are hilarious and they always have a wonderful time. I pulled really hard for Kat and Mason. There are some ups and downs, but through it all love prevails. You discover towards the end what happened and why Kat went to Louisiana, and there are some twists you don't expect when she goes back to California. My only complaint was how quickly it ended. I would have liked a little more, maybe an extra chapter or epilogue, with Olivia meeting the friends and then Kat being back, and of course more with her and Mason, but it was really a sweet stand alone book.
Two Thousand Miles had a solid start. I love the Broussard family and their effect on Kat's personality. However, when Kat has to go back home to "take care of buisness", there no transition and everything following her return is choppy and unbelievable. Not to mention her reunion with Mason; it's soooo cheesy!
Kat's character is crazy. She skips from being subdued and depressed, then wild and brazen, to possessive and nosey. And while they can be cute at times, her atomatic attatchment to Mason is ridiculous.
After the initiation of their relationship, Mason acts so indifferent or even a bit uninterested twords Kat. Then he is suddenly professing his love; it is so far fetched and forced.
I was given a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review by the narrator, which will not impact my review. It was pretty cute overall! Very dramatic and enthralling, with funny bits along the way. However, I never really felt immersed in the book. I always felt like an outsider looking in as opposed to getting lost in the world. My favourite aspect was probably the friends that Kat met in Louisiana! They had wonderful character development and added a lot to the book. I would recommend the audiobook in particular if this is on your TBR list because the narrator's voice is very soothing, as others have said, in addition to thrilling when it needs to be! And although I have never been to the South, I enjoyed the accents she did.
a charming young adult audiobook. I have listened and really enjoyed to quite a few Y/A books, dispite being over 3 times older than intended age group. This time I did feel that this one perhaps apeals slightly more to the younger audience. this one has a great friendly feel about it , the main character being taken under the wings of the the family as if adopted and then falling for one of the "gang" , so lot's of typical teenage problems and relationships, ups and downs. All that said it was still a pleasant listen . Brought to life by Meghan Kellys wonderfull narration.
Kat and Mason were a bit of a train wreck, if I'm honest. I knew that they would fall for each other, just to be separated by life.
There were parts that made me laugh, parts that made me anxious and parts that made me want to scream at some of the characters *DIXIE* I saw the threat before it was revealed - but, I was surprised at reaction that it had.
While parts of this book were fabulous, I just didn't connect to the characters as much as I would have liked. Too much happening, too quickly at times.
I completely enjoyed reading this crazy story. Definitely not just for YA. Loved the setting definitely different from the usual, which was really nice for a change. Crazy quirky family, fun and friendship to be found in an unexpected place, a sweet little possible romance, add a little mystery with a twist and this was a wonderful quick story to read. Loved the crazy cast of characters. Most definitely worth the read. :)
I really enjoyed this book, when I started reading this book I thought Kat was a spoilt rich girl with her, but as I was getting into the book she changed into a caring person who stop thinking of herself and thought of others, then there was Mason OMG what a dream he was a nice lad and started to like Kat as soon as he met her and Kat liked him aswell, I thought they where great together they make a lovely couple
Kat is moving to go live with the family of a friend when tragedy hits her family. She has to go from a California selfie girl to a backwoods Louisiana redneck. She falls in love with a boy named Mason who teaches her to let go. But on the night of her birthday the whole family finds out the secret she has been hiding. She is forced to go back and save her fathers life and company. the enemy is who she least expects.
