This series is based on the Monster Hunter video games.
Very big, very scary, very deadly monster vs. 3 greenhorn monster hunters... yeah, I’m calling plot armor on that win.
That aside, it’s the characters’ backstories that are making this series interesting. Especially Raiga’s connection with the hunter Bexel. (Major cliffhanger at the end).
Great follow-up to the first volume :) I especially liked the backstory of Raiga and I'm especially thrilled how it will go from there~ The action scenes and backgrounds in this volume were absolutely beautiful.
At first this was ok, maybe a tad too much exposition in terms of hunting strategy but that was it. It was a fine enough read, but maybe the panels are a tad too cluttered for such a small format. In fact with the fate of Beccel (who looked really weird when he returned) unknown and that monster attacking the village, this was getting a bit more interesting. But soon that interest was gone. I know this is called Monster Hunter, but come on, these many monsters make sense for a video game but here they are so plentiful that the characters get barely any time for development and even get to know them and so why should I care about them? In the end: Too many monster fights and I cannot bring myself to care for any of the characters. No wonder the live action version is supposed to have a different premise.
Ps. "Hunter?" Really? They only used the english term? Come on, just call them Nimrods if you aren't creative.
PSS. These big armors and weapons often just look silly here.
Yeh, loving this manga even though I don't play the game. This volume is full of battle action, starting off continuing the battle from Vol. 1. Raiga and Keres learn how to fight as a team through all this battling so their characters are developed and they've become friends, with the animosity still there. The plot progresses by having a year pass in time and the duo get sent on another mission where a village is being unusually hindered by monsters. They meet up with another team and the village has its own monster hunter, so the cast is increased dramatically.
They try to hunt the Rathian again and this time they succeed. After they succeed they go their separate ways but reunite down the road. They also run into the "Demon Dog" in Pokke which turns out to be Bexel.
Another exciting hunting volume. Looking forward to the reunion with Bexel.
I received this advanced copy from VIZ Media through Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review.
