Breakneck #2.5

Resenting Me

Rate this book
One look at the beautiful Hawaiian flower dancing on stage at his buddy’s strip club and Pyro’s world changes. He’s lost, captivated, head over heels. He tries to stay away, resist her charms, but he just can’t find the strength to do it. Instead, he hires Hazel and Winter as entertainment for the Breakneck President’s thirtieth birthday party, unknowingly putting the girls’ lives in danger.
Hazel convinces Winter to take the Breakneck gig so that she can get closer to Pyro. Playing the temptress to the max, Hazel appears on stage wearing white angel wings, and little else, drawing Pyro in to where she wants him. Needless to say, they both get very little sleep that night.

One night together making love until the sun comes up and these two are in too deep. But this is the Breakneck world, and sunrise brings gunfire and bloodshed. Time brings Winter’s abduction and brutal rape. Hazel’s guilt burrows deep, and she pushes everyone away. She is resenting herself for convincing Winter to enter this Breakneck world. She is resenting Pyro for ensnaring her heart.

This is the story of Pyro and Lana. It is simply the story of how, sometimes, love just isn’t enough.

I have no idea how this story missed my radar, but I am happy to have finally read it; even if it was completely out of order!

I had always struggled to fully understand how Pyro was so affected by Lana’s death, I know that they had grown close, but it wasn’t really explained and so I was so pleased to finally have seen the moments that drew these two together and what ultimately led Pryo to being so damn heartbroken.

Resenting Me gives you the story from the time that Lana and Winter agree to dance for Brax until the moment where Pryo has to say goodbye to Lana. Through the guilt that Lana felt for bringing Winter to the club which led to her abduction, to Pryo’s guilt over wanting Lana and how bringing her into his world destroyed her.

Lana pushed and pushed due to her guilt but that never stopped her from falling in love with Pryo and him loving her back, even if their time was limited.

This was utterly heartbreaking even though I was sort of annoyed with Lana’s constant pushing. But I loved seeing this glimpse into what occurred between these two. Being able to fully understand the turmoil that Pryo faces in the next few books. Ultimately wanting him to find a new HEA with someone that will understand his guilt and grief.

I adore this series and although some books were enjoyed more than others, what I truly love is that Crystal Spears isn’t afraid to give you grit and darkness with this series. It’s not just the club life that is unsavory at times, but the people living in it. It’s not littered with sweet moments that are out of place. Sure, emotions are shared, but they are shared with a sharp edge.

As much as I want to get back to Shadow’s story... I have to admit that after reading this one, I NEED Pryo’s story NOW! I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us!

'Cry Me a River'

The world of Breakneck is never easy but the feels in Pyro and Lana's story left me speechless because their beginning was heartwarming but their abrupt ending, so heartbreaking. If you read book one of the series, "Seize Me" you would most definitely understand the whys better with Crystal Spears 'behind the scenes' renderings. Lana's POV in "Resenting Me" explained why she felt responsible concerning several situations the way she did and with valid reasonings to disconnect in certain ways from Pyro's love bringing about many 'who know moments' to their short relationship.

And even Pyro in some ways was alpha no doubt but he was also a sensitive, gentle giant wanting love but as he said --

“I may live this fucked up lifestyle, Lana, but I would never intentionally harm a woman. I should have been a little more careful with you, and for that, I’m sorry.”

Pyro's POV in this sad story from the start was truly heartwarming as to why he didn't want Lana dancing for Braxx at his birthday party---

“Ya know? I watched you for weeks. I’ve wanted to get you here for so long, but I didn’t want you dancing for Braxxon. Call me a selfish bastard, I don’t care. But you were my flower first.”

“And then I hurt you last night. And then you get fucking shot. I’m such a selfish fucking asshole.”

This most definitely was a 4.5/5 star read for me!

I hope Pyro gets his happily ever after in "Damaged Me."

This novella provided a nice glimpse into Pyro's brief love affair with Lana, Winter's best friend. I went into this story always keeping the tragic ending in mind, because we all know from book 1 in the series how things will end. Whether that, or the hot and cold nature of their relationship, was to blame for me not being totally consumed by their story, I don't know.

What I can say is that I only felt lukewarm at best reading this story. I think it is for the best though, since Pyro's next love will be the focus of an upcoming book in the series. I have a hard time flip-flopping between love interests for characters. I always want them to end up with one person that clearly comes out ahead of all others. Knowing that I have this quirk, I know that I wouldn't be able to fall in love with the next story, focused on Pyro moving on, if I allowed myself to get too absorbed in the story of Pyro and Lana.

So, while I wasn't consumed by this novella, I did enjoy it and thought it was worth reading, especially if you're a fan of the Breakneck series. It provides a little background that gives insight into Pyro's character. It also provided some closure where his relationship with Lana is concerned. Now, I'm looking forward to the next chapter of Pyro's story and feel like Lana would give him her blessing. What they had was intense, but too short-lived to connect with on a deeper level for me.

Quick read of the story of Lana and Pyro🔥
I'm still not sure if I like this book. At first I thought its gonna more about Pyro so we can better understand him for his own story once we read it but this is more of Lana's POV.
Another thing is I don't feel the attraction between Lana and Pyro, she's hot and cold most of the time and they rarely spend their time together.

Next is Shadow and Tatiana 😏

WARNING: This book is to be read after Seize Me, book 1 in the Breakneck Series.

I fell in love with both Pyro and Lana in Seize Me and also fell in love with the idea of their relationship. Pyro wanted Lana like he's never wanted another person. He was willing to let her in, love her, and cherish her. Lana never let him though. She had experienced so much pain and loss in her life that she was afraid to love again. She thought it was safer to love from afar until she realized that loving him for even a moment would have been enough.

"I could have experienced real love, and instead, I kept it at a distance, never giving it a chance. Here I thought he'd be the one to leave me, and I'm the one who is doing the leaving again. Only this time I don't think I'm coming back to him...Death is terrifying, surreal, and there isn't anything else out there like it. Just the thought that my next breath could be my last should scare me, but the only thing scaring me is that I didn't let myself have that once in a lifetime love..."

Resenting Me is a short story explaining Pyro and Lana's relationship. It was heartbreaking and beautiful all at the same time.

So sad that our return to Breakneck is so heartbreaking, but of course if you read Seize Me you already know how this ends. Still, I was expecting tears and I did not disappoint myself. Man, I hope some happiness is in the cards for Pyro.

For those of you who read Crystal Spears "Seize Me," you'll know what a brilliant, amazing, awesome read it was. I loved every bit of it and yes, it pulled me right out of my cosy reading corner and sent my mind into over drive. I couldn't get enough of the story and was hooked more or less from page one. I wanted raw, gritty, dirty and angsty and that's exactly what i got... and I was in heaven. So knowing I was going to get a companion novella which gave me Lana and Pyro's story... well I was like a kid in a sweet shop... I was beyond excited because I fell in love with both these characters in the first book and despite their ups and downs, had rooted for them as a couple right up until the very end.
" I..." Gasp."Love..."Gasp."You....Stefan"
So how did it go? Oh man, it really pains me to say this but "Resenting Me" just didn't have the wow factor I was expecting. In fact I really struggled with it and the main reason behind that was the pace. Everything moved so fast that I found it difficult to connect with the story line, the characters and the relationship that had formed. I wanted undying love, a passion like no other. I wanted to feel excited for the couple, angry when things went south. I wanted angst, heart break and pain but that never came because the scenes moved forward so quickly. Nothing felt as believable as it had in the first book and I felt completely gutted.

There was also very little extra that I got in terms of scenes. Most of what I read was a refresher of events that had happened in "Seize Me" but this couple weren't always together (through one thing and another) and I would have loved to been a fly on the wall in those moments. What happened when Lana left Winter because of the unbearable guilt she felt? I wanted to feel those emotions. I wanted to feel the torture that ripped through Pyro during those times because one thing's for certain, it wasn't a bed of roses for either character.
"Always... always feel, Stefan."

The last 5% ish kinda saved the book for me. I got the emotions I was looking for and it damn well broke my heart!!! Yay!!! At last!!! But then it finished!!!

I know I'm in the minority when it comes to my views but hey ho, you can't win them all. I will say this though, I can't wait to get the next full length novel in this series and by the sounds of it, "Shadowing Me" is going to be full to the brim with drama, action, shoot outs, murders... oh yeah... and love!!! Just the way I like it!!! I rated "Resenting Me" 3 Hearts.

Did not meet my expectations. The behind the scenes story of Pyro (VP of Breakneck MC) and Lana (BFF of Winter). As we learned in Seize Me , Lana has a huge crush on Pyro and they go back and forth trying to get together. Things are cut short as Lana gets caught up in some serious drama and is murdered.

The short novella focused on the beginning of Pyro and Lana's relationship, if you can call it that, up until the tragic end of Lana. For me the best part was at the 86% mark where we actually learned the gory details of what happened out by the pool where the three people were murdered and I do mean we do get to read each and every detail. We also are witness to Pyro and Lana both loosing each other as she passes away. This was so tragic and emotional and unfortunately the best part of the book.

Why Not 5 Stars?

I did not believe in Pyro and Lana's love. Throughout the book, Lana was leaving. I did not feel any connection on why these two where the end all be all for each other. I would have expected that we would read about them connecting to each other on an emotional instead of sexual level. I was not convinced or invested in their 'bond'.

Poorly written story. While I understand that this is a short story, I still think the story has to be told in an understandable way. One minute they are at the clubhouse and the next they are someplace else. One week later, one month later...what happened during this time? The writing just seemed disconnected and very rushed. It was as though it was not planned out. Strange.

I think when you write a novella that is meant as a backstory, it has to capture the reader right away and should continue throughout. This fell way short by not providing the reader with that truly behind the scenes details and excitement/constant engagement. It was boring up until the 86% mark. Not good.

This novella gives us an insider's view on the ill fated relationship between Pyro, the VP of the Breackneck MC and Lana, the exotic dancer that shook us, as readers, to our cores. Sure, you got glimpses of the relationship in Braxxon and Winter's book but this one is all about them. There are times that you get a little repetition from the previous book but it didn't detract from the story at all for me. I wanted a book about them even knowing the outcome and when I got it, I was gutted all over again.

You felt the joy, love, fear, pain and overwhelming loss that I expected. The journey to that loss though was worth it. There was some frustration at Lana for her indecisiveness of their relationship but when she came to terms with that during the last minutes of her life, I was in tears. Crystal Spears did a wonderful job with a tragic story that just again proves to me that she is indeed one of my five badass biker babes. I hope that down the road, Pyro gets his HEA because Lana would want for him what she never got for herself...to always feel.

I think this story may have been better if left to the imagination. We know because of Lana's lust for Pyro, she's the one who talked Winter into the "birthday gift" gig for Braxxon at the Breakneck MC. Since then both girls were goners for their bikers.

I didn't get Lana and Pyro's attraction. After one not-so-great sexual encounter they should have just called it a day. But after that, for some reason, Pyro was ready to go all in. Lana was hesitant, especially after what happened to Winter.

This book felt very thrown together. While I appreciate Spears not doing a complete rewrite and only including scenes that were important, it felt like we were just being told what happened rather than experiencing it.

But that last chapter saved the book. Because, honestly, most everything before that was not good. I didn't think it was possible for Lana and Pyro to have been able to form a devastating love. They barely spent any time together. But Spears made me feel it all the same. That, combined with Lana's guilt and regrets, just made me cry during that final scene. I loved Lana's message to Pyro. My advice is if you started this book and you're rolling your eyes, keep reading!

SHE’S BACK!!! And so are her Breakneck boys! Now, if you haven’t read Seize Me or Withstanding Me then DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER! Major Spoiler ALERT!

Wow! This book was exactly what we needed for Lana and Pyro’s love story. It is a book about how you should live each day like it’s your last. Lana and Pyro danced around each other with lots of guilt and fear for the future. But they loved each other and time together was cut too short.

Okay so we all know that Lana gets killed in Seize Me. But nothing could prepare me for seeing the murders take place. Lana was so strong and loving to the very last second. She tried to be heroic and protect Eagle and Hailey. Watching her last minutes was heartbreaking and lovely all at the same time.

This book made me fall in love with Pyro and want his book even more! Bravo Crystal for giving your readers exactly what we wished for. I can’t wait to read the next Breakneck book.

I was gifted this book for an honest review.

If you haven't read Books #1 & 2, this review is spoilerish.

At the end of Breakneck #1, Lana is killed. This novella goes behind the scenes to see her tumultuous relationship with Pyro (Stefan).

I found the writing a bit choppy, probably because we were jumping through past events and just focusing on Lana/Pyro.

I didn't like Lana all that much. She seemed moody and was always going back and forth with Pyro who most of the time didn't know what the hell was going on.

I didn't realize that she only told him she loved him as she lay dying in his arms (so depressing!). I can now grasp why he's so messed up about it in book #2. She unfortunately wasted the little time she had with Pyro and that's kind of sad.

Quick Short Read. The story of Pyro and Lana. It's pretty much bits and pieces of the first book. This is supposed to be about getting you ready for Pyro's story. I have no clue how long until his story is released though. So far book 3 and 4 are Shadow and Sniper. I can't help but wonder if the new person Lana talks about this book doesn't because Pyro's salvation. To me all the pieces that were put together in this book don't show an amazing love to cause the heartbreak Pyro shows in Withstanding Me...but what do I know?

*sigh*
Well this story wasn't what I was hoping.
I sadly felt no connection to any of the characters.
When it came to the certain scene at the end I did get a little emotional but not like I would of if I had a connection to Lana.
There honestly was no point to this novella.
It felt rushed and just thrown together.
Even the sex scenes were just plain boring and horrible.
The only reason this got the extra star was for the bit of emotion I felt in the last 5%.

Heartbreaking but true to the series. Even though the novella is after the fact I had to read it to get inside Lana and Pyro's love. Winter's revenge makes it better though.
