There comes a time in everyone's life when they wake up and realize that the fairy tales they cherished so much in childhood are nothing more than make-believe. The real world can be cold and uncaring, but there is still beauty to be found within it. Love does not happen overnight, but when it does, it is the most precious thing in the world. Castle [and other poems about growing up in a fairy tale world] is an anthology of poetry about fantasy, love, and reality. It consists of nearly one hundred poems for children and adults alike who are struggling to make the transition between their perfect world of magic and dreams and the world they are physically living in. Its three categories--"Once Upon a Time: poems about fantasy," "Happily Ever After: poems about love," and "Through the Looking Glass: poems about reality"--were made to create a gradual transition for idealistic dreamers into the real world and attempt to unravel its mysteries.
Lisa Dawn was brought up in New Jersey, where she fell in love with fairy tales and animated movies. She studied screenwriting at Ramapo College in the hopes that she could one day write the next great animated princess movie. After attending the DAVE School in Florida to learn computer animation, she moved to Los Angeles to work on 3D movies as a rotoscope artist. Today, she lives in Texas with her husband and runs The Princess Blog at www.theprincessblog.org.
I first heard of Lisa Dawn when I found The Princess Blog on Instagram. I have enjoyed the articles she wrote reflecting on princesses and fairy tale tropes in movies and literature. This book of fairytale poems is no exception. The classic verses allow the reader to explore their own nostalgia for a time when all the answers they needed could be found within this exquisite fantasy world. The verses also address the complexities of the modern world and the many ways that the rules of fantasy and reality clash. My favorite poems from this collection are Tower, Queen, Bubble, Cause and Effect, Southern Gentleman, Phone Number, Spinning, Tell Me, Monotony, and Limits. Explore this poetry collection for yourself, choose your own favorite titles and share them with everyone here! A top-notch collection of fairytale poems.
