Her open and honest treatment of female sexuality, free from any sense of guilt, infused her writing with power, but also marked her as an iconoclast in her generation. On 31 May 2009, aged 75, she died at a hospital in Pune. Das has earned considerable respect in recent years.

Kamala Surayya or Kamala Das is famous for her short stories, and this is one of the most touching stories one can read. It speaks about a husband who returning from his wifes last rites, and how the 2 children react. A very subtle one.
I heard about this story when i was studying in high school and this was one chapter in Malayalam. I think this is the first story that i read of Kamala Das and it was a beginning. Now a admirer of the writer and her works. When i saw this book i am become nostalgic and really missing those days.
Still I could feel the pain which I felt when I read it for the first time. This was the first story which made me cry and I was very small at that time, 12 year old or so.
I'm a HUGE fan of the author and I have read most of the books she has written, even when they didn't suit my age. Sometimes you find a book that knocks all the air out of your lungs. You cease to exist when the author surprises with you a certain selection of words. This is the effect that this short story had on me. For a moment, I was clearly lost, I went mad, I didn't know what to do. I'm being really honest here. But only the people who have read this certain story will understand what I'm saying. Neyppayasam is a short story, it's barely two pages long. But only a limited number of words are enough to convey a hard hitting piece of art. The author has made me realize that. It's been so long since I read this but the pain that came along with this story, it still lingers. There are somethings you don't get over, and this story is one of those.
