It was one of the common recipes for romance. Boy rescues girl, pursues her but girl has sworn off love because she was hurt by previous boyfriend, etc, etc. Throw in a few other plot lines, like a boss on the prowl and we have a romance.
I didn't like this book. I just couldn't connect with the couple. I thought he wasn't strong enough and she was to too indecisive.
Such a romantic book with underlying tones of desperation from the characters. I expected more sports narrative to be included, however this was a battle of 'who wore desperate best' between the two main characters. Such a romantic book.
The chemistry sizzles between the two main characters, but that's the only good part of this book. The author has evidently never worked in education; her depictions of daily classroom life are entirely laughable, and many of the book's school-related plot devices are highly questionable.
For example, a vindictive principal decides to assign a second-year high school teacher to kindergarten. The mostly glaringly obvious inconsistency is the licensing issue (how many high school teachers are licensed to teach kindergarten?), but even with that problem put aside, it's just too unbelievable that the community and school board would go for it. A former professional football player with no experience with children under 14, suddenly teaching a class of 20 kindergartners? No way.
Then there's the fact that the school has one teacher's aid for grades K-2. One. Who apparently has so much time on her hands that she can fill in for a teacher whenever he leaves. Perhaps that was possible thirty years ago, but it doesn't even come close to the reality of education today.
There are so many other little things that screamed, "wrong!" as I read this book... male teachers should not enter their students' bedrooms at night, especially the bedrooms of little girls... teachers (both male and female) are no longer allowed to crouch down to hug students (if they're allowed to hug at all)... you can't expect a roomful of 5-year-olds to do ANYTHING without direct and alert supervision at all times... and faculty are so vulnerable to lawsuits these days that even the cougar principal's actions seem pretty far-fetched. Oh, and most elementary schools don't have tenure anymore, either. And teachers generally are not allowed to paint their classrooms without asking permission first.
MAYBE, in the 1950s, in some faraway land, you might find a school like this. But not in 21st century America. I realize the school wasn't the setting for the entire book, but it provided a major backdrop for a lot of the action, and the obvious errors just made it hard for me to enjoy the story.
And the final scene was just so very inappropriate I'm surprised it got past the editor. Just sayin'.
2,5 sterren.
This is not your typical Debra Webb novel. Instead of her trademark suspense, this book is much more lighthearted and fun. It does, however, have all the classic Webb hallmarks: good characters, well-written story; and tightly constructed plot. This story of finding yourself after things have gone bad is a joy to read. If you are looking for a fun afternoon escape, this is the book for you.
It was an odd book. Beyond sweet & precious children, a hunk of a manly man & a heroine, who has been burned one too many times to trust the manly man. Of course there is an evil boss & many missed nooky opportunities. The oddest part, was the constant mention of one of the charcters (Sam), yet we never meet him. It really was very odd.
"The Back Up Plan" is a light and lively boy meets girl romance. The characters are fun and interesting to get your attention. The story isn't complicated or have any mystery but it keep me reading.
So if you are looking for a book to travel with this is definitely the one.
I enjoyed this book it was refreshing! It was a light read where the story didn't get bogged down with too many issues... Don't get me wrong I like reading books where there is a lot of issues they overcome but it's nice not to have to read something that gets my anxiety going. This was the classic no one's good enough for my baby to be thei daddy but that was a hard enough issue to get past!
A short, delightful, easy, contemporary romantic novella that is great to carry & read when you have time. I enjoyed the simple yet familiar plot and regular characters, as I am a sucker for a HEA :D So this is a sweet, fun, lighthearted, yet a bit predictable story, but was still a great way to relax on a lazy afternoon. I am happy that I found it for free thru my Amazon Prime Lending Library.
This book keeps you on the edge and wondering what is gonna happen next. It has humor at just the right time and pulls at heart-strings. I love Nora Roberts and this author has ranked in the same category in my opinion.
I love the cover, and the book is pretty good too. The only flaw is that every little hurdle seems to be so easily overcome. This is fiction --- extend the suffering!
I really, really, really disliked this h from beginning to end. She may be a highly educated woman (a doctor) but she was annoying, judgmental, and plain unlikeable. The only reason I can think the H wanted her was the small town factor and nobody else to choose from.
I love Debra Webb but this is not her best work. And, I guess it's not supposed to be. It's a relatively short read with no character development. It is what it is: a lite read.
