Sexy without being blatant, sizzling without being in-your-face, Petie McCarty’s AMBUSH IN THE EVERGLADES is a suspense-filled romance set in the wild and untamed wetlands of Florida where even the mosquitoes are starved for human blood.

Kayli Heddon is doing a photo essay for none other than the governor of Florida. A staunch supporter of saving the beauty of nature, she finds herself far too attracted to the scowling guide and airboat pilot, Skye, a man who exudes power and strength and an air of mystery she cannot help but want to discover. Too bad they mix like oil and water. But don’t they say love is the closest things to hate?

From Native American fables to proof they may be more than stories, to a drug running cartel, Kayli and Skye find romance they may never live to make blossom. Then again, they both are hiding some very important truths that could destroy any chance they have.

Petie McCarty knows how to build a tale that grows and explodes with action, suspense and of course, the possibility of that perfect love.

Girl meets boy, sparks fly, he pushes the throttle of the airboat forward and we are off on an Everglades adventure. So far, things are what I expected them to be and I am loving it. I am sure the danger is around one of these corners, just got to find it. lol

The Everglades is something on my bucket list, so I was very excited to ‘read all about it.’ I can imagine the vibrations from the airboat under my feet, the sounds and smells that surround me, the wind blowing my hair and the sun on my face. Kayli is a photographer, so that is another thing about the book I can relate to, wanting to get those perfect shots. I can hardly wait to walk in her footsteps with my own Mr Wonderful.

Okay, Kayli, either smack him or kiss him. I foresee some hot action, and it’s not just of the romantic kind. I love all the sexual innuendo and flirtation in the dialogue. I do, sometimes, get frustrated with the back and forth of romantic suspense, but, when I really think about it, isn’t miscommunication a popular problem in real life?

I love the ecological slant to the story. I know some people don’t like real life events and concerns in their fictional reading, but to me it makes the story more real. Gives me an extra something to see how it plays out.

Oh yeah, gotta have those *#%$& spiders and giant cockroaches that we know so well here in Florida.

I love Sky’s friend, Jimmy, messing with him about Kayli. Plenty of grins and laughs.

I never thought I would be such a hopeless romantic, but if the writing is good and the characters engrossing, my heart pounds with heat and fear right along with them. I know it’s hard to find a love story that hasn’t been told before, but I sure do like reading new books in my search.

Romance, danger, some Indian lore and mysticism in a tropical paradise? Loved it!

Kayli is on a mission for the governor: to photograph the Everglades Restoration. She’s also on a secret mission but no one knows about that so I won’t reveal. Kayli is assigned to the airboat guide’s, Skye’s, boat and he’s one annoying man. Sure, he’s the handsomest man she’s ever met but the way he treats her grates on her nerves. But as they travel throughout the Everglades, she learns to trust him and it’s a good thing too because she’ll need him if they’re ever going to get out of the Everglades alive. Secrets are revealed and if the wildlife of the Everglades wasn’t enough danger for them both, two dangerous men try to kill them. But Skye’s quick thinking keep them alive, for now. The feelings they share for each other will have to wait until they got safely on land. The only question is whether they’ll make it back in one piece.

What an incredible romantic adventure! I’ve never been to the Everglades and thanks to the detailed narration in Ambush in the Everglades, I feel like I’ve experienced a trip there and back. Such intricate detail, from the tiny little bug creatures to the vastness of the vegetation, this book has it all. The romantic tension between Kayli and Skye was immediate but Petie McCarty keeps us in suspense for quite awhile. Will they or won’t they? Brilliantly done. The plot had several twists I didn’t see coming. Intense action scenes captured my breath and made my heart race. The ending made me cry a little.

If you’re looking for a romantic suspense unlike anything you’ve read before, pick up Ambush in the Everglades. I’m hoping this is part of a new series by Petie McCarty.

Sometimes I go through the hundreds of books I have stashed away on my kindle, purchased on the cheap and immediately banished from my mind, and I run across a title like this one.

“What’s this?” I think. “Why did I buy this again? Was I drinking at the time? Was it free or something? Welp, might as well read it.” Actually I’m assuming I grabbed it because it’s set in the Everglades, although alcohol might have been involved as well.

So I finally read it…and it’s OK. It’s not the worst thing I have stumbled upon in the dark corners of my kindle. The book definitely had a few issues though.

But to start with the good:

1. Competent writing. So many books are terribly written, that unfortunately I actually give credit for competence.
2. Good setting. Lots of nice description of the Everglades.

What wasn’t so good: ridiculous plot, paper thin characters and a completely random paranormal twist.

So our heroine, Kayli, loves the Everglades and wants to protect the environment so much that she does absolutely nothing about it, career or hobby wise, until her politician uncle sends her on a trip to take photos as part of his stealthy campaign to make laws against pollution. Because apparently no one has taken nice photos of the Everglades before so hers will completely wow the voters. I guess? It didn’t really make sense.

And from reading this, I am not sure why anyone would want to save the Everglades, as it sounds more like a horror story full of mosquitoes, leeches, spiders, giant cockroaches, snakes, alligators, killer panthers, mounds of bird guano and drug runners. Although I actually liked the creepy crawlies, especially when the characters jumped around screaming.

Anyway she goes on this boat trip with a half Seminole guide, Skye, who’s right out of central casting and immediately they start this non stop bickering that apparently means they are attracted to each other? But that’s only because it’s a romance. In any other book, I would assume they insult each other because they’re assholes who can’t get along.

Kayli’s sort of ex boyfriend, Brad, crashes the party, and keeps clinging to her even though she tells him time and time again she doesn’t want to date him anymore. But you know who she never explains this to? Skye. She lets him think she’s “another man’s woman” for the whole book, just to throw in some unnecessary drama. And also tells Skye that her most treasured value is complete honesty!

A bunch of stuff happens, with Colombian drug runners, Brad’s political double dealing, more unnecessary jealousy, ghosts of wise old Seminole elders, and most of it feels completely random. It’s an odd book, and not really successful.

But not terrible either. I managed to finish the whole thing before I yeeted it from my kindle and now I will give myself a couple days to recover before I go exploring its dark corners again.

And as always, don’t let my review stop you if it sounds like you might enjoy this book. We all have different tastes and obviously some people really liked it.

Who needs more I ask? ME! I want to read more about the interesting characters. Today I received a signed cover of this book from the author and I am tickled to pieces to have one!! Despite me calling her and telling her it was all her fault that I was exhausted for two days. I stayed up waaaaaaay too late reading her book. Have you had one of those books? You just would read a few more pages to find out what happens? Next thing it is midnight and work is the next day?

I am getting ahead of my post. Shall I back up a bit?

A week or so ago I was having a fantastic conversation with a co-worker/friend of mine and Yes it was work related - for a change. She asked what the date was and I informed her that it was May 21st. Her reply, nonchalantly, ” Oh? Today is the day my book is published on Amazon.” ERT! Rewind. Published on Amazon? Genre? Romance? Really? How absolutley cool is THAT? She was humble but, as I can be, I was pushy. Tell, tell!

I am proud to say I know the author Petie McCarty (A commenter on our blog! Our first semi-famous person!) and just read her second book Everglades. She asked if I would review it and to be honest. Seems authors do like to hear reviews and obtain feedback – go figure!

Everglades is a love story based in – you guessed it – The Everglades. The characters, as any good romance novel will have, are fun, and quirky. I loved them immediately. The dark, dashing Seminole, Skye, and fiesty, strong, phtographer, Kayli and I was hooked. The story got me from the beginning. I enjoyed the description of the flora, fauna and wildlife of the our dear protected wetland. You knew that the author had real life experience in the Everglades to write such wonderful description of the area. (Which I happen to know is true!) Although I enjoyed the plants and bugs, I could see some readers taken aback by too much about the landscape and scenery. (Sorry Petie, you asked for it). The fly boat trip ends (and an interesting ending!) and the story continues fast paced and passionate from there on. I was in hook, line and sinker and wanted to know how the story turned out. Instead of focusing on only the two main characters, other characters are added and provide a nice backdrop to the story. It left me wanting to know what became of the other characters and to hear their stories, too. As with any good romance novel there is a happy ending which I LOVE! (I think I mentioned that before)

The ending brings in a bit of Indian mysticism and lore that I enjoyed but would like to have had it developed a bit more through the story. The hints are there yet I think some of the subtly may be lost on a few. All in all I was quite satisfied with the book! I would recommend to anyone that is looking for a nice love story that isn’t X-rated.

Well done Petie, well done!

Grab a book, any book and READ!!

McCarty pens an intriguing tale of adventure and love with "Everglades." Kayli Heddon is a photographer on a mission, but will her Seminole guide, Skye Landers, derail her planned out life?

Set in the Florida everglades, Kayli is given an assignment by her uncle, the governor – capture the beauty of the everglades. He has a proposal to help the everglades environment. Upon her arrival, Kayli meets her guide, Skye Landers. Kayli and Skye share an instant attraction, but both try to deny it.

Kayli sets out on her expedition with guides from the water district and Clay, a man she used to date. With so many different personalities, there are a ton of clashes and misunderstandings.

While exploring the everglades, Kayli and Skye grow closer, but danger lurks just around the corner when one of the Skye's cousins is coerced into helping drug dealers. Can Skye keep Kayli safe? Does their romance even stand a chance when both Kayli and Skye can't be honest with each other?

McCarty's writing is sharp and engaging. The plot is interesting and the story educates the reader in a natural, organic way. If anything, there didn't appear to be a solid resolution regarding Clay's actions, but that was minor for me.

The characters are deliciously human. Skye shows true heroism in the face of danger, while Kayli finds an inner strength and courage she didn't realize she possessed. Kayli's and Skye's pride gets in their ways at times, and both need to overcome this if they want a real future together.

The most rewarding part was the ending. With an unexpected twist, a lot of elements came together. The end was full of excitement, adventure and mystery which kept me on the edge of my seat.

The novel is sweet for romance readers with Kayli and Skye sharing several kisses. Overall, "Everglades" is a heartwarming story that will have readers believing in the power of love.

I felt like I was riding on an airboat through the river of grass in the Florida Everglades with Kayli Heddon. The author does a wonderful job with detail and description that pull you right into an adventure with Kayli Heddon, a photo journalist who takes a tour boat journey with Skye Landers, a Seminole Indian guide, or so she thinks. Throw Clay Jameson, a shallow, self-serving, political guy into the mix. He insists over and over that Kayli is his girlfriend, but no matter how many times he says it, he can't convince her. Just when you think this book can't get any better, it does. Just when you think it's winding down, it spirals back up again and has you sitting on the edge of your seat with bated breath. Vivid description, awesome details, a hunk of a tour boat guide, a spitfire of a woman who forgets her ladylike ways with the air hitting her face as she glides through Big Cypress Bend on an airboat. Kayli falls head over heels for Syke, but an unexpected beautiful blonde with a Southern drawl appears. Guns, knives, drug dealers, snakes, a legendary cat and uncle, cousins who bring trouble to the camp that's supposed to be hidden so well in the Everglades that no one can find it, and you've got a read like never before. I love how this novel makes you feel like you're right there in the thick of things with Kayli. Without hesitation, I rate it five stars, and I've found another author I love. This is one ride you don't want to miss for the world. Action, adventure, nature, and romance entwined make this book special.

I almost stopped reading but I had nothing else to read at the moment so I endured the entire book. The premise sounded good and could have been! But my complaints are as follows: very low stakes suspense and very tame romance. Like, rated G. This left me very, very bored. Disney/juvenile vibes. It also felt really haphazard to suddenly throw phantoms and spirits in towards the end. I don’t understand the need to put paranormal references into a story out of nowhere. I wasn’t invested in anything to be honest.

Secrets, lies, betrayals, romance, alligators, Colombian drug dealers, Native American culture and history, environmental impact and ecological stance, disgusting bugs, giant spiders, and repulsive cockroaches – oh my!!! Can two stubborn, but passionate characters find love on an airboat in the Everglades?!

There is so much to this book and I loved every page!!!

This is the fourth book I’ve read from the talented writer, Petie McCarty. Last month I had the privilege of reading her book, “The Angel and the SEAL,” which is part of the Mystery Angels Romances Book Series and I totally loved it, so I was very excited to read her latest work, “Ambush in the Everglades.”

Petie’s writing only continues to improve, grow, and expand with each book! I know she will be an author I will continue to read over the years!

I really liked the main characters, Kayli and Skye (great names by the way!!). They were likable, realistic, and genuine. I loved that Kayli, a photographer on assignment for the Florida Governor (who is also her uncle), was a strong, smart, stubborn, bold, sassy, driven female-lead – those are my favorite type of characters and role-models. I loved that Skye, a half Seminole Indian and airboat tour guide, was tough, charming, caring, sexy, persistent, stubborn, and relentless. There is so much chemistry between these two and it was entertaining watching them try to fight it. Not to mention all the hilarious witty banter that went back and forth between Kayli and Skye!! There were many LOL moments in this book and usually at the expense of these two!! I loved how they pushed each other’s buttons and at times drove each other crazy lol!! Gosh, these two were both ever so stubborn, but it made for some great lines and really built up the tension!!

I also really enjoyed the supporting cast – Uncle Wren, Jimmy, Crane, Sally, Uncle John, Aunt Olivia, and Brad. They all were important to the story and played their roles well, especially while engaging with the main characters.

I think the author did a fantastic job on her character development as these characters were so real and personal on many levels!

It is clear Mrs. McCarty does not know how to write a boring, cookie-cutter character. She writes her characters with depth, that have emotional baggage, are dealing with real-life struggles, and are working on over-coming personal obstacles. She writes real-life characters that face real-world problems. Which is one of the reasons I love her books, because I know when I read it, I will be able to easily connect with the characters and possibly even grow with the characters in the story.

This book has a creative story line, fantastic writing style with meticulous and vivid scenes, well-developed characters, is fast paced, and keeps you completely entertained through the last page!!!

The author’s writing is strong and eloquently detailed. She really provided so much detail in her writing that it was easy to picture – especially those disgusting bugs, creepy spiders, and repulsive cockroaches!!! I seriously hate like all bugs – they gross me out lol!!! This book did such a great job describing them that there were a few times I even squealed and made sure my feet were off the ground lol – those bugs weren’t getting me LOL!!!

I was truly impressed with the amount of in-depth research the author provided in this book. It is clear she was well-versed and familiar with the Everglades area and its natural habitat. This book included intricate details on the flora and fauna of the River of Grass. It felt both fun and educational and I definitely learned a lot more about the beautiful Everglades than I had before. I’m not sure if it’s on my bucket list though – those creepy bugs are really freaking me out LOL!!!

There were many times I found myself totally caught up in the story!

This book genre is marketed as romantic suspense and yet the author found a way to throw in so much excitement, mystery, intrigue, and adventure elements into the book. It definitely added a fascinating twist to the story and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time!!!

There are some predictable scenes. However, there are still a few VERY unexpected twists and turns that you definitely won’t see coming!!!

And wow – what an ending!!! Further proof of why Mrs. McCarty is one of my absolutely favorite authors!!!

At this time, this book is not part of a book series and can be read as a standalone.

For me, this book absolutely worked!!! It hit everything I look for and need when I am reading and reviewing a book!!!

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend not only this book, but this author as well! I was truly impressed with the quality of writing, intriguing story line, and excellent character development! I will definitely be continuing to follow this author and check out her upcoming books! I think all romantic suspense readers will like this book too! So, be sure to add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!

Ms. McCarty is fast becoming one of my favorite writers. In fact, I hope that she continues in the romantic suspense category. She writes her action scenes that make you feel like you are right in it with the characters. Her heroines can hold there own and the heroes realize that the woman in their life is quite capable.

Kayli is no shrinking violet. Look, I would be freaking out about leeches and roaches like any sane person so I can get that with her. She takes her punches and moves on from it. Skye doesn’t need to “rescue” her in the book. Oh no, I can’t even imagine how that would have worked out. Not well, not well at all. In fact, I think Kayli would have left him high and dry even if he tried. They were equals in the end and it made for a better relationship and book.

Now, did Skye really lie to her about his lineage or what he really was? Not really. He had his life on the river and that was good enough for him. He enjoyed it and was good at it. In fact, I think he was a bit embarrassed about it. Did he tease her at the beginning of the book? You bet but it made for great tension between them and made them work hard for the relationship that neither one of them saw coming. I love when an author does that with their characters.

The secondary characters in the book are top-notch. There is a bit of Native American folklore that was extremely interesting and very important to their story. Especially Skye. When everything was said and done in the end, Wren was the most important character in the book. The mysticism towards the end of the book was intriguing and made the whole book come together. Ms. McCarty did her research when it came to sights and sounds of the river, too. Just once I would like to ride a riverboat for the rush. Well, and to also see the Everglades in person, too.

Ms. Carty has written a brilliant action-packed, slow-burn romance in the suspense department. Again, she is becoming one of my all-time favorite authors. Pick her books up to read. You won’t be sorry.

In this environmental adventure romance, Kayli is sent on assignment to the Everglades. The writing style is good and there were a couple of plots interwoven into the story, both criminal and political that added a multifaceted dimension to the book. I found the descriptions of the Everglades educational and enjoyed the insights, especially as I had an opportunity of visiting the area when I traveled in the USA some years ago. I was, therefore, able to identify with riding on an airboat, seeing in my mind’s eye the scenery and the various sights and sounds. The criminal aspects of the novel were fully resolved by the end of the book. The romance between Kayli and Skye started out as a love/hate relationship but evolved into a fiery attraction between two strong-minded people who were meant for each other. There is a mystic element to the story, which came as a surprise. However, all in all, it is an entertaining read. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.

Love and Danger in the Everglades…Kayli, a photographer working for the governor, is shooting pictures of the beauty of the Everglades. Skye, doing a favor for his cousin, is the guide on this trip. Both of them are strong proud personalities that conflict many times. In the Everglades, they find danger from an unexpected source and learn to work together. I receive a free copy of this book from eBook Discovery. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. I really liked this suspenseful romantic book. I enjoyed reading about the beautiful environment of the Everglades. Even though I didn't like Skye at first, Kayli and Skye were both likable. It was wonderful to find a book that has a good clean romance. I really enjoyed this suspenseful romance.

Captivated from the start, I fell in love with both protagonists, Kayli Heddon and Skye Landers, and couldn’t read fast enough to find out what awaited them in this well-written, romantic adventure. An expert storyteller, Ms. McCarty has a wonderful eye for detail and a strong sense of place. She takes us on an extraordinary journey with Kayli and Skye as they confront the physical and emotional challenges of the Everglades. At times, it felt like the Everglades was another character in the narrative.

An excellent summer read!

AMBUSH IN THE EVERGLADES By Petie McCarty
This is a story by new to me author Petie McCarty. This is the 1st, but will not be the last book of hers I read. She has really done her homework on the Everglades. She has obvious extensive knowledge of the flora and fauna of the region. I very much enjoyed the story of Kayli Heddon and Skye Landers. They meet when Kayli gets sent to the Everglades to take photos for the governor for a project. Skye ends up as the tour guide running the air boat. There is much more but I want the reader to find out on their own. This story has everything danger, intrigue, suspense, likable characters, and it's a clean love story. I give this book 5 stars.

Kayli always saw Big Sugar as polluters of the Everglades so she jumped with delight when her Uncle, the Governor of Florida, allowed her to photograph the beauty and nature that was being tarnished. It would be her big break as a nature photographer if she could nail the presentation. Can she handle the voyage and everything it entails, especially the frustrating tour guide?

Skye Landers grew up in the Glades, his uncle teaching him the way of the Seminole, his cousin Jimmy owned an air boat tour company and called in a favor. How difficult would it be to a fire for a couple days so someone could take a few pictures? He needed a break from the daily grind anyway. Skye was in for much more than he imagined.

There are so many layers to this story and each one unfolds in a unique way. There's many things hiding in the shadows waiting for you to read and discover each one. So sit back, relax, and enjoy as much as I did.

What a ride. I went to the Everglades with Petie McCarty’s characters. Her description of the Everglades really and truly made it seem as if I were there. Her characters made it even more life-like.

I have read and reviewed another of Petie McCarty’s books, “The Angel and the Seal”. So, you are going to see a few points here that are exactly the same. She creates characters you want to know, but different characters from book to book. No mass market romances here; no boiler plate plots. I think the reason each story is so different is because the writer changes the scenery, the characters backgrounds and personalities, and she also adds additional characters which always seem to add to the story.

You are also going to read in another of my reviews that I’m no romance fan. However, there is so much suspense in her books that it is more like reading a mystery.

Obviously, you can tell I think this is a book worth your time. Petie McCarty has many other books published. Two or three series and some stand alones. Speaking of stand alones, each book I have read can be considered this as far as enjoying the story. If you do a little research, you’ll find each book she’s written has very good reviews.

When I read the summary for Ambush in the Everglades I knew I had to read it and let me tell you that summary does not in no way do it justice. I don’t know what I expected from Ambush in the Everglades when I first picked it up but I do know one thing what I got is not it. It was so much more than what I had pictured or imaged it to be.

The description of the everglades of all the little bugs, spiders, snakes and alligators were so vivid that I felt as if I was right there on that boat with Skye and Kayli soaking it all up. The description and the world building alone was enough to keep the pages flipping. I would love, love to see Ambush in the Everglades on the big screen.

The description and the world building of the everglades is not the only thing that kept me turning the pages. No the characters played a big part in it with Skye and Kayli always going at it ribbing each other the wrong way the sparks flying and they were not always the loving, attractive kind either no most of the sparks were the two of them not getting along with each other but I suspect that to be because of the chemistry between them and they not knowing what was going on or understanding it.

I suspect that a lot of it had to do with them not trusting each other for reasons of their own. Not to mention the fact that Kayli’s ex-boyfriend came along for the ride knowing that Kayli didn’t want him there. Brad is there because he has not accepted that Kayli doesn’t want to be with him. Brad thinks they are there to give their relationship a second chance even though Kayli has already make it more than clear to him.

Ambush in the Everglades is filled with mystery, suspense, betrayal, secrets, adventure, action and danger to keep the adrenaline pumping. I would so love to read more stories set in the everglades.

If you like books that are full of secrets, betrayal, suspense as well as action and adventure of a lifetime then you are going to love Ambush in the Everglades.

This was a wonderful read! The writing pulled you in immediately. The descriptions were so well written you actually felt like you were on an airboat in the Everglades. The action and adventure kept you turning the pages for the entire read. Romance is in the air too, but it doesn’t overshadow characters or events. I literally stayed up all night finishing this one!!! I will definitely be reading more by this author!!

This is the first book I have read by this author and found within the pages a story that kept me engaged page after page - word after word. The story found within these pages was one I haven't encountered in any other book before. The characters are relatable. Basically it is easy to see myself hanging out with the characters and within the story.

I loved it and look forward to many many more reads from this author.

I, Amber McCarty (Imaginative Dreams), was given a copy for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. The story line is very good with a lot of really likable characters. This is a story that shows that you should never really judge a book by its cover or rather a person based on first impressions or appearance. A really really enjoyable read.

Petie McCarty is a new-to-me author and I hope to read more of her books in the future. This is a stand-alone book without a cliff hanger ending written in third person.
Kayli Heddon is sent to the Florida Everglades on an assignment for the Governor. She is to take photos of the area wildlife, habitat and drainage patterns to supplement his latest environmental proposal. Unfortunately, Clay Jameson, the Governor’s Deputy Chief of Staff, finagles his way on the trip. He and Kayli have had a couple of dates and, from her prospective, there will be no more. Clay is a jerk with a big ego and inflated view of himself. He thinks Kayli can help his career, especially since the governor is her pseudo-dad, and believes he has charmed her into a relationship.

Along with three district biologists and Skye Landers, a contracted Seminole guide, the group sets out to collect plant and water samples, and to position Kayli for the best photos. Only Kayli knows her assignment is confidential because the governor knows he has a mole in his office, leaking information to his political opponents. She also does not say Clay isn’t her boyfriend, except to Clay.

Skye Landers doesn’t want to be the guide for this trip, but he is doing it as a favor for his cousin, Jimmy, who owns the airboat business. When he sees Kayli, he resents the instant attraction he feels for the gorgeous photographer and is angry of the jealousy he feels towards Clay. Seeing Kayli makes him yearn for a relationship he doesn’t think he wants. He hides his feelings behind a gruff, abrasive attitude while showing contempt for Kayli and Clay. He relishes making a fool out of Clay and wishes Kayli would realize her boyfriend is an idiot.

Venturing deeper into the Everglades brings danger no one expects. Crane, Skye’s other cousin, has unfortunate ties with Columbian drug runners and he unwittingly puts them on a collision course with the governor’s group. Skye and the idyllic camp built by Skye’s Uncle Wren are not what they appear to be, and the camp is the setting for the final confrontations. Skye and Kayli have their secrets, and both know when, or if, the other finds them out, the fragile truce-driven relationship they share will be lost.

Ms. McCarty writes with descriptive prose and I could feel the hot, humid air, imagine the speed of the airboats and see the vegetation and animals as if I was right there in the action. Vivid pictures developed in my head as I read her words and I learned a lot about the Everglades, too. Because the book was so realistic and believable, I felt a little tricked and bamboozled when the explanation of Uncle Wren was revealed. That is my only criticism of the book.

Kayli Heddon is a photographer and photo journalist who has a chance of going into the Everglades to take a bunch of pictures to promote the restoration of the area to help Governor Drake with his plans for the area. Along for the ride is Clay Jameson the Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Drake, who went on a couple of dates with Kayli and sees their relationship much differently than Kayli does.

Skye Landers is stuck driving one of the airboats as a favor to his cousin Jimmy. He is a Seminole and knows the area extremely well and can bring Kayli to areas to get good pictures.

But the tension between Kayli and Skye is through the roof and the two have almost a "hate" relationship. Yet gradually the two begin to thaw their relationship and soon they are dealing with more than they bargained for when drug dealers end up on the same island as them.

I enjoyed this book but initially I was kind of wondering where the book was headed with Kayli and Clay as I wondered why he was really there but he added some extra drama into the book. I found a little distracted by Clay's personal agendas but that was just my own personal opinion.

I liked Kayli and was frustrated for her about Clay for sure. It was interesting to watch her relationship with Skye and see how it all went but I knew there was definitely more to it than what was presented. There was almost two sides to Kayli where she wanted to prove herself but at the same time at times she did not seem as tough as what she wanted to portray.

I knew there was more to Skye than what we were presented with and I was curious to learn more about him as the book went on. I was definitely pleasantly surprised but he seemed to have his own insecurities which did kind of surprise me.

There were lots of twists and turns with dealing with the drugs and I was surprised at some of the things that were revealed. There were definitely some things that were difficult to explain but they did fit well with the book but they took me by surprise for sure.

The ending was good!

Thoughts: I read this book really fast because it was a good read. If you ever wanted to know anything about the Everglades, this is also a good book to read. I learned more about the plants and animals of the Glades than I ever knew before. I loved Skye’s character. He’s stoic, strong, handsome…everything you want in a hero. Kayli on the other hand bothered me a little. Yes, she found the nerve to stay in the Glades with Skye and to go back, but she came across as a bit wishy-washy when it came to dealing with Brad. I did love the Uncle Wren bit, especially at the end.

What I liked: The “thing” with Uncle Wren (not saying what it is so I don’t give anything away). I loved Skye and his cousin Jimmy. They are both good characters. So is Sally. I also liked the Glades descriptions, but it did get a little heavy at times. As for Kayli… she had her good points and not so good. Why couldn’t she just tell Brad off and let everyone know he is *not* her boyfriend—including him? Yes, not telling him added conflict to the story, but it was weak conflict. Adding drug runners in ramped up the danger aspect of the tale. The ending was satisfying.

What I didn’t like: See above. A little too much detail on the flora and a simple discussion would have alleviated a lot of the issues (though it would have also killed the story).

Recommendation: Even with the few problems noted above, I did enjoy the story. If you enjoy action with your romance, definitely pick this one up.

What a high action, romantic, dangerous, mystical novel!
I couldn’t have asked for more.

The Governor of Florida sends a young woman he sees as a daughter into the Everglades to take pictures of the Everglades. Tagging along, but not wanted, is a guy she had two dates with, Clay. He’s a staff member for the Governor and is a royal jerk. While Kylie wished she’d never dated him at all, she doesn’t contradict his claim that they are a couple when she ends up in the care of an annoyed, goodlooking, but scowling boat captain.

Kylie and 'Boat Captain' Skye don’t hit it off at first. In short order lots of sparks are flying. Some in anger, some from attraction, and some from danger. A big problem is that they both have hidden secrets they refuse to share, resulting in both believing the other will never forgive their hidden lies.

There is also some life-threatening moments with the drug cartels. Those guys believe in some serious revenge. However, my fav part is the revealing of Wren. I’ll say no more.

The visuals McCarty’s words create is fabulous. You will truly see the Everglades that she creates. The characters are not just three dimensional. They are FIVE dimensional, once you take into account their emotions and the mystical touch. And some of these five dimensional people are very scary dudes.

In this environmental adventure romance, Kayli is sent on assignment to the Everglades. The writing style was good and there were a couple of plots interwoven into the story. I found the descriptions of the Everglades educational and enjoyed the explanations, especially as I had an opportunity of visiting the area when I travelled in the USA some years ago. I was therefore able to identify with riding on an airboat and seeing in my mind’s eye the scenery and the various sights and sounds. The criminal aspect of the story was fully resolved by the end of the book. However, I found the romance to be somewhat frustrating. Kayli and Skye had a love/hate relationship, and if you could shout in text, there were a lot of raised voices all the way through the story. I don’t enjoy arguments at the best of times and am always the first to make a hasty exit when voices are raised. I therefore found the nature of the romance somewhat disturbing. There was a mystic element to the story, which came as a surprise. However, all in all it was an entertaining read. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. Kayli Heddon is a photo journalist that is working for her “Uncle" Governor Drake and is sent on a safari airboat ride through the Everglades. She is passionate about trying to conserve them. She is going out to document the good and the bad in a presentation for the Governor.
Skye Landers is the Native guide to take the whole tour through the Everglades; he is filling in for his Cousin Jimmy. He has another side of himself that we do not see until after they get back to the real world at the end of the safari.
Clay Jameson is the Governors deputy chief of staff and has invited himself into this safari because he is basically stalking Kayli after a date and keeps saying she is his girlfriend. He is a city boy so we get to see some hilariousness in him trying to be in the wild.
It was a good quick read. Despite the two sided part of Skye I did like his character. The author described the everglades well and imagery in the book that I could see everything that they were seeing.

The Everglades

This standalone romance is set in the Everglades, where the Florida governor has sent a family friend and photographer to take photos of restoration progress. But what starts out as a straightforward assignment turns tempestuous when Kayli arrives at the boat ramp late and finds the last person she wants to see, Brad, from the governor's office. A man who won't take no as her answer for a third date. But in her hurried attempt to avoid him, she commits to riding with their Seminole guide, Skye, and from there it's like oil and water and a big, jumbled mess.

I never warmed to Kayli, who tried to be "kind" and polite to Brad while at the same time doing the opposite to Skye. The setting was well described and the characters felt real. The storyline blends in action, a hint of paranormal, a little bit of romance and a quick HEA.
