Merrick Ta'Duran is the powerful leader of the Eastern Mountain Clan on the Prime world of Baade. His people, known as the Ghosts of the Forests, live high in the Eastern Mountains. Merrick feels the weight of responsibility as the males within his clan become desperate to find mates among the few remaining females. After months of captivity, he fears his life will end on the strange world until one chance encounter gives him hope.

Addie Banks' world has been one of silence since a devastating illness when she was sixteen. Determined to stand on her own two feet, she goes to school during the day and works at night to put herself through college. Her only hope for peace is to help the creature talking to her escape from the men holding him.

Merrick knows the female who helps him is his bond mate. She may deny it. She may fight it. She may even try to run from it, but it won't matter. She is his and he will do everything he can to convince her, hold her, even kidnap her if that is what it takes to make her realize that they belong together.

Will Addie hear the love and longing in Merrick's voice? Can she trust and accept the new life he has to offer? Or, will a ruthless killer silence him before she gets a chance?

Merrick’s Maiden by S. E. Smith
Cosmos’ Gateway book 5. Science fiction romance with erotica elements. Best read as part of the series. Cliffhanger.
Merrick’s was one of the warriors that came through the gateway to help in a rescue (prior book). He was captured by unethical scientists and experimented on and tortured. Addie is accidentally let into the space where Merrick is being held and ends up a prisoner as well.
Addie is deaf but is able to communicate with Merrick mentally as it turns out they are bond mates. She’s grateful to no longer be alone with the silence in her head.

Filled with lots of action, instantaneous connections of lust and the goal of defeating the bad guys. Amusing and steamy.

I've not read anything by this author before, and it's possible that this book wasn't the right one to try first. I realise it's part of a series but I quickly picked up on who was who and what was happening. The author is a talented writer that's obvious. So why the three stars? Well this is a romance story, and that's what's lacking here IMO romance. There's no relationship building between the H/h, in fact the bulk of the story's focus is elsewhere. The scenes between the two main characters felt a little forced and rather contrived. I did enjoy the story, but I'm not sure I will read more of this series.

Merrick and Addie.
Listened to on audio and the reader, Suzanne Elise Freeman is just OK.
The story though, was a fun frolic of OTT evil dudes (and dudette), Hot insta mates and guest appearances of old faves. Of the Mars needs Women trope, the men from Merrick's world a coming to Earth through a portal to look for mates.
Addie is deaf ever since she had meningitis as a teen. So her life has been derailed but she is almost done with her schooling. Then her night cleaning job at a secretive pharmaceutical lab leads her to Merrick, the sexy alien in a cage. He was captured in the last book. I guess you could read this as a stand-a-lone (I've only read the first book myself) but I got a little lost in the names of all the characters from previous books. That might be less of an issue if it hadn't been an audiobook.
Anyways, The book revolves around finding Merrick and helping him escape and of course... killing the bad guys. Addie and Merrick were cute together. It probably would have been boring if it weren't for the bad guys and action. A nice low stress read like all the other books I've read by this author. I liked how SES kept Addie in character, always hampered by her disability. Merrick is able to speak to her in her mind and it's the first sound she's heard in 6 years. At first Merrick didn't even realize that she was deaf.

This books is a more personal book for Susan because she writes about Spinal Meningitis. In her intro Susan is talking about her father and his life in silence and this is how her book starts with Addie Banks who lost her hearing when she contacted Spinal Meningitis.
Addie's fight to be independent and adjust is a would without sound is a great portrayal.
She always had love and support from her family but she needed to manage on her own.

Prime Warriors bond for life and this is the story of Merrick the Leader of the Eastern Clan on Blaade.
Merrick, at the end of book 4 (Cosmo's story) was kidnapped. He was a hard head during the series and I was curious about the man hiding behind. He didn't disappoint. After months of captivity he never lost his will to survive and escape.
Wile Addie was cleaning some offices she stumbles across a man in a cell, chained and in bad shape. Coming out of her haze and saved by a guard she finds weird markings in her palm and hears a man's voice in her mind.
Merrick cannot believe that he has finally met his mate. In the beginning he is to excited to notice Addie's reluctance to talk to him but he understands that she needs time.

Addie decides that she must save him and now Merrick has something to live for and fight for.
Trying to save Merrick, Addie finds herself prisoner next to him and their relating and attraction start to grow.
I found a enjoyed the sweet, tender, protective side if Merrick in spite of all the abuse that he was subjected.

Finally free, Merrick and Addie get their happy ending (i do not want to give more spoilers).
I highly recommend this book. As usual Susan writes a beautiful story with a sweet, loving alpha male and a heroine to match his in courage.
I am looking forward to more books in the series.

I thought I had read the worst, but nope. This was it. Wow. How bad can it get? Complete with grunting Neanderthals and sex that includes "lush mounds" leaping from lacy bras. Where are the credible science fiction novels with a romantic story line? A good book allows you to suspend your disbelief and all I could do was laugh at the stupidness of this so-called "novel." I suppose I should avoid any and all books with half naked people running their tongues over each other in the cover art.

I was not bowled over with this one but good . . .

Merrick Ta’Duran was the powerful leader of the Eastern Mountain Clan on the Prime world of Baade and he has been captured by very bad unscrupulous humans while on a rescue mission on Earth. Caged, drugged, and experimented on Merrick finds that he needs a way out. He finds that in one fragile looking human female that he can speak to. Addie lost her hearing years before from a illness gone too far. She now lives in a world that holds silence for her. That was the case until one night she hears a voice she has never heard before. She never thought she would hear again.

Her connection to Merrick spurs her to do something that could cost her her life. That was a real possibility since she was kidnapped the next time she went to work. Things just get a bit more exciting for her life from that point on. She finds a connection with Merrick and then it all get taken away. Merrick and Addie had a different kind of connection. I enjoyed their story but it could have been more. It was good seeing RITA again and some of the other characters waiting for their story.

Narrator Suzanne Elise Freeman came back strong as all the previous narration showed she could be. It just was not the captivating story that I was wanting for Merrick. I wanted so much more for him. The clarity was there.

More like a 3.5 stars. . . I was wanting so much more and more adventure but not near death for Merrick

I keep reading books from S.E. Smith, and I keep feeling let down. Part of the reason is this author pumps out a ton of books so they are constantly being recommended to me. Another reason is I can never remember what her books are about, they are forgettable after I finish it. Thats mean. But also true.

I think the author comes up with really good ideas for plots and story lines. I get sucked in by the descriptions. But then I end up rolling my eyes at some of the characters, especially in this book because its book #5 with established characters. (Audible doesn't tell you most of the time that it's a series or what number the book is in the series. So annoying.) So some of the characters would make jokes and have somewhat annoying personalities...RITA the artificial intelligence. I didn't think RITA was funny, or RITA 2. I just found her quips to be annoying. Or the fact that they kept saying she was just like her creators. I didn't care, because I didn't know those characters.

Also, these characters go from meeting, to loving in like no time and then the story is about a couple that has acted like they have been together for way longer than a week. And I find that boring. Sylvia Day wrote the Crossfire series and it had 5 books. I didn't feel like they actually KNEW each other until that last book. Which kept it interesting.

Another thing I don't like about these books is the aliens are basically human. And this is a complaint I have with a lot of alien books lately. The reason I like alien romances, is because it is so different. Or it SHOULD be so different. The alien should not be able to pass as a human. Having a bondmate and bondmate tattoo is not enough to make this an alien book for me. Especially when the whole book took place on earth. BORING. I read alien books because I want the author to get creative and send me to a different world, with different ways of life, different looking creatures.

I liked the fact that the heroine was deaf. I didn't like that I kept forgetting that. I felt like she understood everything that was going on way too well to be completely deaf. At one point in the story there was an unexpected spray of gunfire. I feel like she reacted too quickly to it. More quickly than someone who wouldn't be able to hear the gunfire would. There were full conversations with multiple people who didn't know sign language, and she was able to read everyone's lips and keep up. She should have been more confused in those moments and we should have felt that with her. We as the reader should have missed parts of conversations so that we would experience her deafness. But I kept forgetting.

While on earth helping Tansy, Merrick is kidnapped. He is kept in a lab and experimented on. He is knocked out with a strong tranquilizer before they take him to the lab so he isn't sure what they are doing to him. All he knows is that he feels disgusting when he awakes. He is not sure that he can mentally hang on much longer.
Addie has been deaf since and illness when she was sixteen. She is now finishing up college and is working two jobs in order to get away from her too protective family. The first day of her job as a cleaning lady in a lab, she sees a man caged. One of the guards tell her to forget that she was ever there because that floor was supposed to be off limits to her. The caged man had touched her while she was there and now she has tattooed circles on her hand. She hasn't heard a voice in many years but she now hears a man in her head.
Merrick realizes that she is his bond mate and tries to warn her away from going to work the next day. She didn't listen and now she is kidnapped too. The lead scientist wants to find a way to clone the "alien male".
There is plenty of exciting things going on in this story. It is a nice addition to the series.

OMG! I love reading/listening to S.E. Smith books. I had the audio version of this book. You will fall in love with Merrick and Addie just like me. This is the fifth book in Cosmos' Gateway series. Addie is such a strong woman. She lost her hearing as a teenager from an childhood illness. Merrick had never thought that he would fate his bonded mate. Merrick been through alot from testing, constantly being drugged, being shocked, moved from one place to another, is draining him. There is no doubt that your heart will weep for him just like mine did. This book has it all from heartfelt, full of love loyalties, family, community, and commitment. I would HIGHLY recommend this series to EVERYONE!! I can't wait to read more this series. Can Merrick and Addie survive? You WILL have to get this to find out. Keep up the amazing work! Again I found that Suzanne Elise Freeman Did another wonderful job with these characters.

I love me some S.E. Smith books!

Reading a book by S.E. Smith is an enjoyable experience, characterized by well-crafted narratives, rich world-building, and engaging dialogue. Each story includes elements of drama, but there is also an abundance of laugh-out-loud humor. The characters are so intricately developed that they truly come to life. The plots are skillfully constructed, and while they belong to the sci-fi genre, they remain entirely believable. Unlike some authors who stray into the territory of "no way that could ever happen," Smith's style is more grounded, presenting scenarios that feel plausible.

I thoroughly enjoy the entire "Cosmo's Gateway" series and am also a fan of all her adult romance novels. My favorites include her alien romance series, beginning with "Dragon Warriors of Valdier" and extending to the "Alliance" books. I can confidently say that there isn’t a single book of hers that I haven’t enjoyed or regretted purchasing.

This one wasn't my favourite because of the inconsistency in the deafness. There was a great period when it was explained and you could imagine how surprising having a voice and overcoming barriers would've been. But too many times throughout the story she was able to understand aliens or follow speach by lip reading when other times she had forced people to look at her first or was easily audible when other times she would sign as well or stay silent and give gestures instead.
I love that she was strong whilst being physically challenged but it was irritating the moment she meets Merrick the habits of several hard fought years just disappear and she's able to recognise doors being knocked on down stairs or bullets whizzing by and how did she get her licence?

+Merrick has been captured by evil earthlings.
+She is deaf due to an illness. That could have, should have made her an interesting character.
-She is a complete and total ditz. In fact she was so ditzy and annoying I gave myself a headache eye rolling. She just never seemed to think anything through. She was exhausting with her silliness, her weakness and her stereotypical-ness of a silly girl. Heck, she even mentioned how silly she was!
-The bad guys were complete, total and predictably bad guys and absolutely nothing new.
-Overall I’m completely taken aback by how weak and foolhardy this Smith has made most of her female characters.
I think I’m disappointed a woman would write this. I’m out.

3.5 Stars 🌟

While I enjoyed this book, I kind of had a hard time with the premise. For as strong and advanced as these Warriors are supposed to be, I had a difficult time with the fact that they were able to keep Merrick a prisoner for so long. I GET that anyone can be captured, but the length of time that they held him? That was a tough one for me to swallow.

Other than that, I enjoyed getting to see the relationship with Addie develop and the fact that she was deaf made their internal connection that much better.

There was also the advancement of the overall story arc with the bad guys being discovered, but that story line is not finished either. Things are getting interesting.....

Good read

This story picked up just where it should have in the story line. Merrick has almost reached his limit. The testing, constantly being drugged, being shocked, moved from one place to another, is draining him. Then he meets Addie by accident. His mate. Addie lost her hearing while still in high school but has worked hard to get on with her life and trying to get a degree. You have a crazy doctor wanting to experiment on Merrick and a cold hearted killer wanting to hunt him like prey and then keep is body as a trophy. It's a great story in the series. Really hope the next book will be out soon. To many warriors still need mates

Book 5 of this series demonstrated the horror of mankind and the ability to find love in the mix of the madness. It should the cruel side of the humans wanting to experiment on things unfamiliar to them. And high lighted the strength of the weak when love becomes involved. Merrick is from Baade and is captured while on a rescue mission on Earth and is captured. Used for the mad scientist's experiments, he is rescued by someone who is not viewed as whole. Through this struggle they find an inner strength and a love that will sustain the test of time. Even in sad situations, love can conquer all.

1st few chapters were a bit boring, it was only until Merrick & Addie meet did it get slightly better. Bad guys scenes were equally as boring especially that bitch.
I'm glad Dr. Rockman is dead, no one should torture or kill in the name of science though I think she should have been taken to Baade & used as a whore since she is so fascinated with their mating ritual; she can get first-hand knowledge all she wants.
Markham should have been apprehended or killed at the end, not still loose to raise terror once again.

Hidden beach-house

Working as a cleaner in an office block, being deaf as well as a student made life difficult.
Then one day she saw a man chained up and had touched his hand as she was grabbed by one of the guards. Now she has a tatoo type rings on her hand and it itches. Suddenly she hears a voice in her head, it says she is his bondmate. This Alien love story is an excellant read.

Merrick's Maiden

Merrick has been missing for months. Every time they get close to rescue him, they move him. Addie is working extra jobs while going to school. Cleaning the lab she didn't know when she entered one her life would never be the same.
Enjoyed this book in the series. Lots of action.

Great Storyline 5+*

Ms Smith has done it again with another great storyline and very well written book. You will really hate the villains in this story. I was hoping the Prime Warrior would get his Right of Justice on this bad guy. Guess I will have to wait until the next book. Also, I am very pleased to read that there will be a next book in the series.

I had to give this five stars because it’s got it all; a super sexy alien from a strange and beautiful realm, a gorgeous human female with a disability that she’s managed to courageously deal with, hot hot hot exchanges between them, and very scary escapades! Plus, the HEA is extremely satisfying.
I can’t urge you strongly enough, read this book. It’s an absolute thrill!

Really enjoy S.E. Smith

I have been slowly wandering through this series over a couple of years. It is fun catching up with old characters and meeting new ones. I like the gateway theme and the misunderstandings becoming bridges to cooperation. Good values and the good guys win. Be aware of open door sexuality but done tastefully.

I gritted my teeth through the exposition-heavy beginning, knowing that this is book 5 of a series, but the prose never got better. In fact, when they started talking to each other psychically, they sounded like petulant children. Then there was the plan for one of the scientists to rape the MMC and I noped out.

Very good

I enjoyed Merrick’s Maiden. Especially that it wasn’t so easy for Merrick and Addie to escape his captivity. That made it more real. I really liked Merrick as a hero and Addie’s hearing loss was a really interesting character aspect. Good story!

Merrick's maiden

Addie had meningitis that caused her total hearing loss when she was sixteen so part of becoming independent was working as a janitor to pay her schooling. Then her cleaning brought her to an alien prisoner in the lab and the romance began.
