Alex used to be a bit of a thief, but now she pours coffee and sells books for a steady paycheck. Until a man walks in and offers her a job at his private security company. A job where she has to be a bit more than a thief. Will she join his crew? And if she does, can she get over how much she doesn't like his absurdly attractive right-hand man, Ethan?
**Story ends at the 90% mark, includes sneak-peek of the sequel.** Reader discretion is advised for graphic violence, explicit language and sexual content.
I'm a story junkie. I love to read, write and basically inhale all kinds of stories, mostly books. Sometimes movies. Occasionally cartoons. I write my two favorite genres, action/adventure and romance.
Whoa!!! That was really soooooo.... good!!!! It reminded me of a good movie with much action, much love... much of everything!!!! I was reading it and it was like i was sitting in a movie theater and i was watching a movie on the big screen!!! I'm so thrilled that i finally read it!!!!
Well, our heroine Alex was a lonely girl that after she had drop college cause she couldn't afford, she was working and sometimes she was stealing... One day, Brooks approach her and he proposed her to follow him in a cabin far away for some "thieves" school... Eventually she takes the risk to follow him and after a lot of time she finds herself surrounding from many people... People who welcome her and showing her emotions that eventually starts feeling back for them!!! And that scared the shit out off her!!!
Among these "awesome" people, it's one guy that makes her feel many different things but mostly hate... They don't get along with each other, even than the sexual tension between them is everywhere!!!! In the beginning they try to ignore each other and after a while they arranged a thin truce between them... that leads Alex to be more closely to Ethan than anybody else....
In a while the things have take an unexpected turn who made them start running and hiding and seperated them from the other members of their small "family" and that fact changes everything.... I really liked all the other members of the family... Ollie, Brooks, August, Spencer... You were all so great!!!!
And i enjoyed so much the fights... the racings... the practises... the falling in love... small little things... and eventually i liked every single moment of this book!!!!
Overall Opinion: This was a unique story and I did enjoy it. I had some major issues with the pacing by the end (see below pacing section) that brought my rating down. I felt like the book would really improve if (1) it was shorter (I typically like longer books, but some of this could've been edited out since it lagged at times), (2) they got together sooner, and (3) the author didn't cram all of the sex scenes at the end in pretty much one big section. I also would've really liked to get Ethan's POV. I think it would've added a lot to the story to understand where he was coming from and dealing with as well as Alex. I personally struggle with suspenseful romances when I don't feel like it has a good balance between the suspense and the romance -- and I did struggle with that in this one. So, if you like your suspenseful romances heavier on suspense and a book that has a good slow-burn connection with the mcs (because I did enjoy their connection)...this might be great for you.
Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Alex and Ethan's story. Alex is approached at her job at a bookstore by Brooks to join his team of thieves. They are honest thieves that only take jobs that are morally right. She reluctantly goes with him to check out his compound and meet the others on his team, and this is where she meets Ethan. They have some hostility to get over, but then they become friends. Eventually those friendly feelings turn into more, and they fall in love. There are some action packed scenes, some sexy times, and they do get a HFN ending.
POV: This was told in Alex's POV.
Overall Pace of Story: Ok. It is on the longer side. I did feel like it dragged a little at times, and I skimmed some at the end during the (what felt like non-stop) sex scenes -- shocking, I know ;)
Instalove: No, they have sufficient time to develop stronger feelings IMO.
H rating: 3 stars. Ethan. He was ok. I would've really appreciated having his POV to get inside his head.
h rating: 4 stars. Alex. She was a tough, cool chick. I liked her, and especially her witty banter.
Sadness level: Low. No tissues needed.
Push/Pull: Yes, but pretty mild
Heat level: Moderate. They take a long time to become intimate, and then at the end that seemed to be all the story was. They had pretty good chemistry.
Descriptive sex: Yes
Safe sex: Yes. Condoms are used until other birth control is started. No mentions of previous practices that I remember.
OW/OM drama: No
Sex scene with OW or OM: No
Cheating: No
Separation: No
Possible Triggers: Yes
Closure: This had ok closure with a HFN ending. I would've liked a jump ahead epilogue with a little bit more commitment for the couple.
How I got it: It was on loan through booklending.com
Alex is 21 year old collage drop out and a thief. She is working at a coffee shop. One day she meets Brooks. Brooks has a proposition for her. He wants her to became part of his thief team.
"I work for an organization that trains and utilizes talented young people like you."
Eventually, she accepts the offer and leaves with him. In the cabin she meets others.

When first Alex met Ethan she couldn't stand him.
" 'What's your problem?' he bit out ' You,' I clipped."
But after a while she gets to know more about him and ends up liking him.
"I liked you just fine, but every time you walked into a room I was in, you would glare at me. I was just reacting to your anger."
I liked first 75 % of book.
There was lot of action.
Fighting
Street racing
The last 25 % was reserved for Alex & Ethan.
Overall, this was a great book and I am hoping to read more from this author.
First of all I cannot for the life of me fathom how this book a) Isn't more famous b) Doesn't have a higher rating c) Has such few reads. This book has everything I look for in good a romance - Action✓ Badass female protagonist✓ An intense sexy hero who's sweet & not into bdsm✓ (thank you very much) An actual plot development & a build up towards a romantic relationship ✓ A love hate relationship & then friendship & then a relationship! That's how it should be folks ! Not just insta-love-jump-into-my-bed-for-one-night & let's see how it goes! Like so many books out there are selling it! Plus a hawt guy with a beard*multiple swooooons* and a supporting cast I love as much - Oliver, Spencer, August, Brooks & the whole crew. The only disappointment is that this is a stand alone & can-you-believe-it the only work by the author - whyyyyyyyy??? She should write more! Please people, we need to add more sensible plots to the romance genre. So encourage authors like this one to write more! Cat Phoenix if you ever read this. Please girl you gotta write!!!!
ACTION, DRAMA, ROMANCE, HOT LEADING MAN, COMEDY, SPYING, THIEVERY, LYING, MANIPULATING, SMOKING KISSES, INSANE SEXUAL TENSION, FRIENDSHIP AND THE BEST PART OF ALL…
NO LOVE TRIANGLES
What more can a girl ask for?
Honestly the summary for this book on good reads had be intrigued but I had my reservations about how the spy/thief book would pan out, but boy did this exceed my expectations in a good way. I am a major fan of action, romance, drama etc. so this was book was right up my alley. With a plot line that keeps you hooked, suspenseful action to keep you intrigued, witty funny moments that keep you giggling, a romance brimming with sexual tension that literally makes you want to yell in frustration to a story about a girl learning to take chances and finally open herself to people she cares about, this book was just what I needed to read.
Started off really well but it went downhill from there. There wasn't enough thievery. It felt like the author was setting up this cool organisation and opportunity for action, but then hardly anything happened. The "danger" part of the story felt weak and too easy to be a real threat. It also happened too late in the book for me. I feel like a lot of the relationship building dragged out longer than necessary(particularly with Ethan)so that there ended up being very little time for pay off. And... I don't really understand what happened with both Ethan and Alex's characters. They both really changed. And not for the better, it wasn't really growth. Alex did open up, and that's great, but I don't really understand why she had to become so... vanilla. I mean you can still be snarky and fun when you're in love. I feel like a lot of that side of her was suppressed the more she fell for Ethan. And it only seemed to come out when she was away from him, which was annoying. Ethan himself started to come off a lot more aggressive the closer they got (before they were even together), which seemed at odds with who I thought he was at the beginning. I really love romantic relationships that feel like a team, and whilst they started off that way, by the end it definitely felt like Ethan held the power in the relationship. I also didn't like how Alex just jumped to the conclusion that Ethan could never like her, didn't even consider it. It was so at odds with how she was written at other points of the book. I'm just tired of heroines who need a guy to give them a self esteem boost. The ending was anticlimactic. The last few chapters seemed like they should have happened earlier, because they just felt tacked on after the conflict had been resolved.
Oh There is definitely a fight!!… A fight to find a story
With the title as hitting as fighting, ( pun is intended..if there is one) one would think that the book would be a romantic read where the couple would fight through to fall in love eventually or it would be an adrenaline teaser with blood and bones raining everywhere or if for nothing it would atleast be about a fighter. Well let me gladly disappoint you because the book is none of that. In fact I am still clueless as to what exactly the book was
The characters are good, narration is good, the basic backdrop and setting could be forcibly agreed upon to be good because frankly to say that you need to see the backdrop clear right? .
The trouble with the book is that it is way too fantasized that it has completely come unhinged. The plot and story developments feels too dramatical , theatrical and fantasized that you cannot actually feel it to be real and believable.
The book starts of nicely and you clearly see a potential thriller but as you proceed and wait for the book to pickup, you disappointingly realize that the book is going nowhere worthwhile and is just passing time with irrelevant story plot like I had dinner today with my housemates and we talked about flowers and later slept in "dog dead for the night" pose. Alright you would by this point say so what is so bad about that. Well how about I keep doing the same thing in different ways for the rest of the book and in between keep adding stuff like oh while we were eating, two aliens came in demanding for a serving of spaghetti and meatballs with two cans of beers to go. You think I am talking crazy? Imagine what I must have felt with the book.. Well to be fair the above is just an example and not actual events in the story. I just don’t want to be a spoiler so I am using best suited examples
The Book has only one and major fault and that is improper plot development. The base structure fails miserable as the author gets caught up in defining and mentioning cute and sweet moments that the real story suffers from lack of attention. I admit there are lots of cute, sweet, romantic moments but that is irrelevant when the story doesn’t go anywhere. It is at the near end that the plot actually shows a bit spark but that too gets put out soon.
Apologies if my review sounds confusing or seems to be written by a drunk monkey.. let me assure you that is not the case as i am five minutes sober... it is just that i am still reeling under the impact of finding plot in the book
So in short Fighting fights for a good story development as even though having a good base plot for disposal, the author doesn’t actually brings out a well planned and written story. Rather the book gets lost in the short and quick scenes so much that it becomes the jist of whole book without an actual story to show.
The book was going so well. I really liked the main character, I could understand her aloofness and, later, when she begins to get closer to the others.
I really liked her initial relationship with Ethan – I know that sometimes you don’t like someone just because (here in Brazil we say that our “saint” didn’t get along with the other person’s “saint”). The evolution of their relationship from that to best friends, and then the sexual tension… it was really nice reading.
I first began to get irritated when all of their missions depended on Alex. Seriously, how did they do it before? Then I thought, maybe I was being too demanding – maybe they had a good thief, but with Alex in their team, and she being so much better at stealing, maybe they thought to use her. But that scene when the steal the statue? I thought that Alex was a pickpocket, not a Mission Impossible kinda girl.
And the attack on the compound part? That was so stupid. That girl – who didn’t have any combat training before and has been training for, what? 3 months? – takes down most of the bad guys? Huuuuum, that was pushing it.
But, whatever…
That didn’t bother me so much, until Alex and Ethan get together. Oh boy, did they become a whiny couple. Actually, Alex became a whiny bitch and Ethan a saint with endless patience. Because, seriously, I would have bitchslapped her when she had the umpteenth freak out attack because of her insecurities.
That was what pissed me off. Until then, she seemed like a cool mature girl. Then, she begins having this girly panic attacks like: “OMG, he’s so handsome, he can have anyone, so he’ll cheat” “OMG, I can’t like him (for whatever reason), so I must always be pinning for him”…
And all those freak outs were inside her head! She wouldn’t even talk to Ethan, tell him what was worrying her, discuss her insecurities and doubts like a mature woman. No, she would make up these scenarios in her head, get to the conclusion that their relationship was not going to last, and completely shut out Ethan (who became more and more aggressive because of this bulls*** Alex was pulling).
If you’re going to give us a strong independent character, who pretty much tells everyone that bothers her to piss off, you can’t change that character in the last ¾ of the story.
So I stopped reading after the restaurant freak out attack (which was, by the way, so rude to the others from the compound who were dining with them).
So I’ll give it 2 stars for the first part of the book, which was interesting and compelling (aside from the dumb moments – green chick karateing everybody to oblivion parts).
This book is what I've been looking to read for a while! Ninjas and badass female lead and a male lead that DOESN'T act like an asshole. Need I say more??
Plus: Holy mother of sexual tension!!! For a while there even I was having a little trouble breathing.
I love this book so much!
My only criticism is that the ending was a little too long for me... After so much tension and action suddenly it's a lot of unicorns and rainbows, honestly it was a little boring. It's one sex scene after another, all bunch up together, and she describes every touch, every kiss and every kind word they exchange (and they do all this A LOT!). If the ending was a little shorter, I think it would have been better, but I still gave it a five stars because this is the kind of book that's awfully rare to find.
I'm bumping this up to 5 stars since I enjoyed this so much I read it twice this year.
The romance in this is awesome, but that's not all it has going for it. It's also a story of Alex finding a family and a place she belongs. As well as a group of kick ass kids fighting some vigilante justice. It's got a lot going for it and its all done really well. I loved Alex, Ethan, Ollie, Brooks, literally most of the secondary characters. Everyone was well developed and delightful.
Read the 4 chapters provided in the sample... and did not feel like it's going to be my cup of tea. I didn't warm up to the main character in the slightest and to be honest I'm not in the mood to read something only OK for me.
If you read this, treasure it. It's not every day you see a badass heroine like Alex outside of a dystopian YA.
Alex is a survivor. She's all alone in the world and she knows how to take care of herself. She has keen observational skills and a knack for theft. She's not someone you want to mess with. Even though she knows how to keep her mouth shut, she can be quite ornery. When Alex moves in with the gang she likes it, but sometimes she needs some space. Ethan and Alex are at loggerheads from the start. But then Ethan starts helping Alex with her combat training. From there it's all down the slippery slope of love for Alex. Only problem is that she's 100% positive Ethan doesn't feel the same so she puts up her walls to protect herself. Poor Ethan. He looks like a tough badboy but Alex holding him at arms length hurts his feelings. They're both so ready to think the worst of the other. Still, that doesn't stop Ethan from calling Alex babe. Swoon! In return, Alex calls him Buttercup. Tehehe. I loved Ethan's tendency to say innocent things suggestively. Their chemistry is sizzling. But they're both proud. So they test the waters first. They subtly try and get a clue as to the other's feelings but it's like playing poker. And they're both very good at poker. And even though both of them are so good at reading people, they can't seem to use the talent in their love life.
I knew he was only playing a game, toying with me. I refused to show him how much I actually wanted him. Apparently we were so bored, we were conning each other now.
The author really knows how to ramp up the sexual tension. Every time it looks like they're about to burst through the dam of “just friends” one of them backs off. They're too afraid of getting hurt.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. Towards the end, the sex scenes seemed a bit too much. Almost like the author just remembered to throw a few in for shits and giggles.
So close to giving it 5 stars, but I was expecting a bit more from the ending and it was just three long chapters of cute love scenes. Anyway, the rest of the books was brilliant. Strangely enough I was not impressed at the beginning. The writing is very amateurish and there are so many problems with the blurb I don't even know where to start. However, the more I got into the story and the characters the more I fell in love with it. This is a perfect example of a good long book and reminded me of why I prefer long books to short books. The author spent ages building relationships and didn't rush anything. That way everything developed perfectly and was much more satisfying in the end. I loved it. I'm happy with a stand-alone, but if any book deserves a sequel this one does. I would definitely give this a re-read.
This story begins when Alex meets a very strange man who is watching her. She's a reformed thief, and is living bored with her life. Until this strange man offers her a job she can't refuse. Now, living in a whole new world, with way different people she's just trying to get it all together. But the instant she meets Ethan again things change. She can't stand him at first, but after a while she starts to get to know more about him, and ends up really liking him. But the whole crew has some problems going on, and these two must work together to help figure them out before it is all too late.
Fighting was a very good book. I really enjoyed the whole plot line, and all of the characters. But the thing that really made the book super enjoyable was the romance and relationship between Alex and Ethan! Those two together were freaking awesome! Ethan is a major "alpha male" and Alex was super snarky, and funny! I totally loved them together, and not only was their relationship awesome, they could totally kick butt as a team as well. I hope we get to see more of these two in a future book, because that would just be epic!
This was such a disappointment to be quite honest. Fighting started out amazingly. The main character Alex gets thrown into this sort of network of thieves. Thieves for hire, only doing the "right" thing. Kind of like Robin Hood I'd say.
All the characters are really cool and original and quirky, and I loved the way they all acted around each other. Even said main character with her love interest, Ethan. I started liking those two very much, and in the middle I would've grown to love them. If. I felt like the story dragged out with the additional drama with Fletcher, and as that drama arised, I started liking Ethan and Alex less and less. Maybe that's just me though, maybe that should've been the part where people get drawn in, fall in love with the story, but I lost my interest right on that part. And it's really, really disappointing, because I believe this book could've been way better.
Wow, this hit all the marks with action, romance, humor, and a freshness in the concept.
I've always wanted to go to an academy for something awesome, like wizardry or ninja skills. It's why I watch shows like Quantico and am still vaguely obsessed with Spacecamp. The home Brooks created meets that desire, with a tangible sense of comraderie among the misfits learning spy skills.
I also genuinely liked Alex, and her growth through the story was believable. She built a series of complex relationships, including one that naturally evolved in the book. There are only a few things I like less than insta-love (see my shelf of books I wish I hadn't read), and this couple just made sense.
This book was actually so good like I had to put a pause on it because I wasn't ready to finish it.
That last chapter though....
WTFFFF!!!
It ended like there was another chapter afterwards. I was trying to swipe the screen to go to the next page but LOW AND BEHOLD IT WAS FREAKING DONE. How can one simply give such false hope? I believed that the ending was something cliche like the girl says that entire speech about how she found what she was looking for but naaaaaaaaah. I hope there's a sequel but the odds are little #yolo #Onecanhope
I really liked this lmao, but it's because I'm such a Hate To Love diehard (they only romance I'll accept at this point That's How It Should Be) kms anyways
I liked that Alex was accepted respected and admired and that she could Whoop when she needed to, I really liked the Balance of all the genres orthemesidk thruout the book i think that was also done well
i deeply love brooks and i wish he was my Uncle

3.5, For RS, which is not my favorite genre, this was very good. My biggest concern was the length, a bit dragged out IMO. Still thoroughly enjoyed, good writing style and a strong heroine. Definitely reading the next in the series.
2020 = DNF 2024 = DNF / review written (read & skimmed to the 70% mark)
At 500 pages, this book is long.
The story starts out well, but around 20 to 30% of the way in, it really started to drag. 🥱 Told solely in Alex's POV, she tells about how she's recruited by Brooks and joins a motley crew of young people. They do a variety of security type jobs.
How Alex joins and becomes a part of the group was my favorite part. I enjoyed getting to know the four other members, especially Ollie who's 12 (but acts older). They gradually become a family.
👎 The many pages spent on her training, not so much.
❋ I never fully understood Brooks, or his so-called security company. He remains mostly a mystery (up to the 70% mark, when I dnf'd).
There's little realism. Alex becomes the star of the group. She's quite adept and learns everything in a few months. She's trained for a few hours on evasive driving maneuvers. After that, she drives like someone who's been doing it for years. She struggles to learn how to fight hand-to-hand, but soon is surpassing her teacher (even knocking him unconscious). Let's not even get started on how she single-handedly defeated 7 of the 10 guys who broke into their compound. 🙄
❋ I think we're supposed to feel sorry for Alex, b/c of her tragic backstory. Her parents died in a car accident when she was 11. She was raised after that by an aunt who gave her everything she needed, but affection. An ex-boyfriend cheated on her. (I've read stories more tragic than this).
😬 The Miscommunication Trope. Alex and Ethan start off on the wrong foot. Because Alex thought Ethan said something she found offensive (turns out he didn't), she was unfairly rude to him for some time. Then when she finds out the truth, she apologizes and they become friends.
After that, Alex is somehow convinced that Ethan only sees her as a friend. Even though he shows her through his body language, he's interested in her. And this is a girl who supposedly is SO good at reading body language. Ugh. 😮💨
I never warmed up to Alex. She has major anger issues. When upset, she flies off the handle and says very mean things. Then she later regrets it and apologizes. She does this several times to Ethan, who never deserved it. Plus, she made the kids in the group understandably nervous. It's hard to live with a loose cannon.
❋ Alex is 21, but often acts like a bratty teenager.
Alex and Ethan are often at odds, until after the 60% mark. That's when they have yet another argument, and they finally share their feelings. Neither one of them is good at communicating.
By the time A & E got together, I had lost interest in the story. The few action scenes and the just starting romance, weren't enough to keep me reading. All the unnecessary filler slowed the pacing way down, and made it less fun to read.
Okay yeah the writing wasn't bad. But. The story was so very slow. I couldn't figure out in the beginning (first 40% or so) why nothing seemed to be happening, until I figured this was probably where we are supposed to be engrossed in how our protagonist is finally opening up and letting other people into her life. Then some stuff happens, yay, finally! But what follows after, just made absolutely no sense, and really dubbed down the intelligence of the whole book in my opinion. The bad guys were so lame. The good guys were (or at least our protagonist was) apparently as skilled as 007 after just 4 months of training. Right.
In addition, our protagonist is supposed to be super clever and observant and whatnot, but she is literally so DUMB when it comes to romance. What. The. Fuck. I think the author tried very hard to create some non-existent drama just so there could be some more romance dialogue or some shit, but seriously that was just terrible at times. And oh so frustrating, really made me lose any respect for our protagonist as a character at some points.
Thankfully she gets over herself and all is well. But the story itself is weak, just doesn't play a big role in the book, and is basically covered in a thick layer of wishy washy romance.
This book was unexpectedly entertaining and I couldn't stop reading. It was so badass with the action, exciting with the adventure, and sweet with the romance. There was a lot of humor and sarcasm mixed in with the writing, which made me laugh out loud multiple times. I was hooked from the very beginning and especially enjoyed reading the scenes where the characters went on missions. All of the characters were great, and I loved the friendships and relationships that formed. However, I think it would have been even better to read more about Ethan's past background. Also, while the romance built up gradually and realistically throughout the first two thirds of the book, the romance in the last one third of the book was fabulous like before but sometimes occurred at slightly inappropriate situations (like a lot of PDA), so it got a teeny bit annoying. I would also have liked for some scenes at the end of the novel to have focused a little more on friendship and family, evening out the extreme focus on romance. Overall, this novel was so fun to read and I really liked it!
I've had this book on my shelf for a very long time. I started reading it a couple of months ago but couldn't get into it. So after it has been popping up as a recommendation I have decided to give it a go again. I really tried but half way through I started skimming and just skipping chapters.
Alex is a 21 year old collage drop out and a thief. She gets recruited to join a spy agency consisting of a bunch of kids that essentially steal from the bad guys. They get trained to fight, use guns, drive cars, and all the stuff you usually see in spy movies.
The only other person there "close to her age" is Ethan. Who is the best at everything.
I found the main characters immature and irritating. Alex keeps asking herself stupid questions like "how did that happen?" or "When did that happen?" She keeps pushing Ethan away and then she doesn't understand his reactions and thinks he doesn't like her.
I'm sure I would have enjoyed this back when I was maybe 16 or something.
THIS WAS FAB!!! Well most of it. I wasn't into the writing at the beginning, a lot of telling not showing. But it got fast paced and exciting really quickly and the character were to die for! The last 25% of the book was just sex which annoyed me but there's soooooo much action in this book I love it!!
This book was great, the only thing I would change is the beginning could have been cut in half. When the relationship started it was amazing, great writing on that part. Solid read. Thanks to my goodreads friend for the recommendation.
