A detailed and interesting history of Judaism as a religion and as a disperse people and culture from its inception in the BC Middle East to the mid-1950's, when this collection of essays was written. The book concludes with a focus on American Jewry, which seems to have held the most promise for that contributing author for the future of Jewish ethics and culture. The book is organized into 6 sections in chronological order, each written by a different Jewish historian or scholar who's researches specialized in that historical, religious or philosophical period. Given that the book was published in 1956, the concluding chapters are a bit dated, but that did not detract from the solid historical foundation or the thoughtful analysis I enjoyed in this book. Highly recommended for anyone seeking to acquire some detailed history behind Judaism and its intrinsic ethos.
