He rescues people from danger. Can she convince him to save himself?
Trace Barton has it all—almost. But great friends and a dream job don’t make up for not having someone to share it with. When an old friend steps back into his life, he’s faced with a decision. Should he try for more and risk losing her friendship?
Brooke Howe’s mother is dead; that’s what her father had told Brooke since she was five. After his funeral, she discovers he’d lied to her, so she goes in search of the woman. Brooke is looking for answers, not love. When she meets Trace again she realizes she might have found both.
Except there’s something wrong with him, and he refuses to get help. Could she have found him only to lose him?
I listened to this Health Care Heroes book and really enjoyed it. I heard the narrator's voice and was transported back to Lilac City for a few minutes. If you haven't followed this author's works, then you won't know that Lilac City is the fictional town in a previous series she wrote and uses the same narrator for her audiobooks of that series. But, hearing that same voice, I knew I was in for another great book to listen to.
Brooke starts the book out with sorrow, heartache, relief, confusion, all kinds of emotions. She is trying to navigate them all when her friend and father's housekeeper gives her some pretty shocking news. Her mother is alive. Thus Brooke embarks on a journey to find her mother. Only to be reunited with her dear friend Trace.
These two were just so cute together. They have their ups and down struggles but for the most part, there's no drama between them. I always love watching love stories start and the hemming and hawing on the characters' parts in their uncertainty of whether the other person likes them or not. But then they take the leap and move forward with the relationship. Brooke and Trace had me smiling and laughing at their relationship. And there were definitely some sweet sighs as the book went on.
The narrator did a great job adding in the emotions of the characters and scenes through her storytelling and definitely had me feeling as if I was watching a movie play out in my head while listening.
Content: Clean
I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
I have a grandson that is a firefighter/paramedic so I have a real love for stories involving them. Donna K. Weaver has added a good one to the Health Care Heroes series. Trace and Brooke have a history but nothing could have prepared them for the twists their lives have taken. This book entertained and inspired me. Thank you.
I enjoyed reading this novella. The main characters had a nice relationship and chemistry with each other and the secondary characters help to support the plot. I enjoyed the author's writing style.
Can Brooke get past the walls to find the Trace she knew as a teenager?
This has some things that were unexpected. Trace is a volunteer fireman, but the story isn’t about him fighting fires. Trace and Brooke were friends as teens and he always made her feel calm when she had such a controlling dad. Then there was the awful house fire and everything changed and they lost touch. Clean and wholesome. This is a new to me author and I’ll read her again.
Wonderful story! Trace and Brooke knew each other as children. After a fire, Trace leaves to live with his grandpa in Washington. Will these two reunite? Can they rekindle their romance? Can they overcome obstacles in their way? I highly recommend this book. Happy Reading!
Donna does it again. I absolutely loved this story and really didn't want it to end. I read this in MY but am going to buy it so I can read it again and again!
A good clean romance: Brook had a controlling father and Trace had survived a fire in their teen age years. They meet after Brook's father dies and she finds her mother. Can they rekindle their friendship? Could it be more? I really enjoyed reading this story and would recommend it.
This book is part of a series and I haven’t read any of the other books in this series. It is a stand alone so you don’t need to read the others before reading this one. Trace knew Brooke as a youth. Trace lost touch with Brooke after a bad accident in which he was burned and his father was killed. He went to live with his grandfather. He becomes friends with a massage therapist. Later he meets Brooke again and finds out Brooke is his massage therapists long lost daughter. This book is about reconnection, healing, and finding and accepting love. It is a quick read.
Brooke and Trace were friends before events in their lives separated them. Both of them have been through a lot--Trace lost his father and was severely burned in an accident and Brooke was raised by a over-controlling father who told her that her mother was dead, only to discover after her father's death that she's very much alive. Brooke and Trace become reaquainted when Brooke goes in search of the mother she'd thought long dead. Only this Trace isn't exactly the Trace Brooke used to know. She's got to get past the walls Trace has erected to protect himself.
This is the first book in the Health Care Heroes series that I've read, which is fine because each book is a standalone. I like second chance love stories and this one can be read in an afternoon. I liked that there wasn't any drama between the main characters, I don't care for stories where the main characters play games. I liked that Brooke and her mother were able to get acquainted and have a relationship after all the years they'd been kept apart.
I listened to the audiobook and thought the narrator did wonderful job imparting the feelings of the characters into the voices. She's narrated other books by this author and always does a great job.
Romance sweet, contemporary; series but stand alone read Trace and ? story was a lovely second chance romance. More of a 3.5 for me as a reader. Set in the Pacific Northwest, two people who knew each other as teens reconnect through her mother. Lots of circumstances in both their pasts and some in their present can keep them apart, but they both decide it’s worth it with the attraction they feel. Sweet moments together, determination not to give up, and each finding their present and future are so much better with each other.
This story of overcoming past tragedies and moving forward really warmed my heart. I found the MCs likable and their story believable. It’s a clean story, too, so that was a plus. If you enjoy sweet, clean, contemporary romance, you might enjoy this book.
This is another winner from Donna. The love story is clean. Even though there is a former abusive relationship, details are presented in a way that is acceptable. I love the characters.
I did enjoy this book, although I felt that I would have liked a number of areas to be more fleshed out. Vickie Pierce did. Very nice job narrating, but the sound quality was different. It seemed like she was sitting in the room with me reading it.
A very sweet and tender story! Lovely characters and storyline and I sure hope that there's more in this series. So much depth of characters and feelings. 10 plus stars!
Trace Barton and Brooke Howe were friends in school until there was a fire that took his father’s life and left him in the hospital. Brooke visited him a lot but he was in so much pain she wasn’t sure if it was from the burns or the loss of his father. She saw the bandages but he didn’t know she was there as they kept him sedated. When she went one day, he was no longer there as his grandfather had come and taken him to live with him on his farm. Brooke never heard from him again. Her father was a controlling father who was an attorney and always got his own way. He had told her when she was very young that her mother had died and they didn’t talk about her ever again. Now she is alone as her father fell over dead with a massive heart attack. After the funeral, Audrey, who was always there for Brooke as well as their housekeeper, told Brooke to come with her and she took her to the attic where she had stored all the gifts and letters from her mother who was very much alive. She explained that she stayed there to help Brooke all she could and to hide all the letters and gifts until it was safe to give them to her. Of course Brooke wanted to know all about her mother and there was no doubt she was going to go find her. When she did, she also found Trace. There is a lot to this story and I so enjoyed it. I don’t want to give anymore away but you won’t be disappointed in this story.
5 stars I purchased a copy of the clean Washington Stated set novella Saving the Firefighter: Health Care Heroes Book 5: Brooke and Trace by Donna K. Weaver and this review was given freely. Ultimately heartwarming. Realistic characters, some drama and a twenty-year old secret are blended together in this second chance romance where the characters survived abuse and tragedy, are learning to thrive again and, are secretly longing for love and family. Finally out from under the control of her manipulative lawyer father, grief stricken Brooke Howe mourns her father’s sudden death until her housekeeper Audrey reveals a 20+ year old secret which spurs Brooke to leave San Diego to seek answers in the quaint Savage Citadel Castle and its Wildstone Park Historical Village in Washington State. Brooke finds more than she expected in the form of her emotionally and physically scarred high school friend; burn survivor, forester, EMT and volunteer fireman; Trace Barton.
This is a sweet romance where old friends just happen to find each other and romance develops. As much as it was about a romantic relationship, the story was also about parent/child relationships. Brooke's were pretty shocking really. She has a rather controlling father. So much so, that it amounts to cruelty in my opinion even if Brooke did feel loved all along. And definitely cruel toward Brooke's mother. In that sense he was pretty much a monster in my book. But the romance was sweet and the couple support one another even in the face of big trials. They are sweet and protective of each other.
It is a quick read or in my case, listen since I had the audiobook. Narration was done well.
No sex, language or violence *I received a complimentary audiobook copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

“Saving the Firefighter” Wildstone, book #2 by Donna K. Weaver narrated by Vicki Pierce Still a good story.. I have read this story a couple of times already and it is still a really good story that still plucks my heartstrings. This read was a listen, a free listen, on the author’s YouTube channel. You might like to stop by and listen to this story or one of her other stories. Happy LISTENING ! !
Saving the Firefighter is Donna K Weaver’s latest novel. I really enjoyed this book. Donna K Weaver writes such great stories with characters that are believable. Brooke Howe believes her mother is dead. When her father dies, she discovered that her mother is still alive. This begins her journey to find her mother and discover the truth. This journey leads Brooke to find her mother and rediscover an old High School friend, Trace. Donna tells a story of love and the road to love is never easy. Saving the Firefighter is an enjoyable way to escape into a new book. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
This sweet second chances romance brings old friends back together and reunites a mother with her child. I felt Brooke's pain at the loss of her father, but her sense of betrayal when she discovers that her mother is not dead as he led her to believe, is devastating. She and Trace make a sweet couple and together they fit perfectly into the small community when her mother has found a place to call home. This short novel can be read by any age group and it comes to a happy and romantic conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
I really enjoyed this book and meeting characters from another book. It felt like a reunion, not just for me but for the characters too. Brooke finds out her mother is still alive and she goes to meet her. DiDi lives at the Savage Citadel complex. She runs a business there. Brooke also meets an old friend and in the process saves him too. This was a good read with lots of surprises in it. I really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it. I received an arc and the views and opinions are my own.
Brooke has lived with a very strict Father, but had some great friends to help her through. When she unexpectedly meets up with one of those friends from the past sparks fly. Trace has had some very difficult things happen in his life. The death of his father in a fire and the subsequent scars from being in the same fire haunt him. He is thrilled but a little hesitant when Brooke comes back into his life. This is a sweet romance with heart. It also has some fun twists.
This book takes you on a roller coaster of emotions. Brooke is a great main character that had had a life with one battle after another. Trace hasn't exactly had an easy life either . This story takes us through some tough emotional backgrounds to what is possible. I really enjoyed it. I received a free download of this book from the publisher. This review is my own honest opinion
This was a sweet story and second chance romance. I loved Brooke and Trace. They were so natural together, even during their awkward moments. They were sweet. Their support system was also wonderful as well. I loved Brooke's gumption in rescuing her man. I'm glad they get their HEA.
