Ornithology is the classic text for the undergraduate ornithology course, long admired for its evolutionary approach to bird science. The new edition maintains the scope and expertise that made the book so popular while incorporating the latest research and updating the exquisite program of drawings.
This is an excellent ornithology reference and text book. My favorite section is on the structure of feathers (chapter 4). This segues well to the next chapter on flight dynamics; feathers & flight are some of the distinguishing characteristics of avifauna. Other fascinating chapters (in my opinion) are those on Migration and Orientation and navigation. Dr. Gill was a member of the Department of Ornithology at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia for over 25 years.
I think this is a very good ornithology text book. It's writen in a way that someone who has not studied much science would be able to understand and there are lots of figures/pictures. My only issue with the book is that the images are all in black and white - I'd like to see color in an ornithology text book.
This is one of the first text book I have read on ornithology. The material covers almost every aspect of bird life. Things are explained in comparatively simpler terms. A nice read for anyone interested in birds
Nice textbook, but not readable in one - or two sittings. I didn't actually finish the entire text, but want it off my main Goodreads updates page. Gave up about 1/3 of the way through.
This is a wonderful bird book... especially for nature nerds! It is still a text book, but it is a readable textbook. This book explains the wonders of birds - and they are far more wonderful than you realize before reading this book. Buy the latest edition you can afford, and keep it on your library shelf... you will be reaching for it regularly to answer curiosities.
Excellent academic primer. Expect new version is same. Found it enhanced what I was to later learn through field observations, Sibley's writings and other evolving literature.
