Synopsis:

Shipwrecked in Okinawa, Sarasa has met Doctor Basho, who has healed her eyes, and Shuri, who has fled a coup in Sanyo. Together, they must help stop a plot to kill Okinawa's president and protect the independent nation from invasion!

My Thoughts:

There's plenty of action in this one. Sarasa and Shuri are working to protect Okinawa from Japan for different, but similar reasons. These two would be a force if they joined together against King Ukon, but since they're "Tatara" and the "Red King" it's not likely to happen. At least, not now, anyway. I can dream!

Anyway, we learn the truth of what Unten was trying to accomplish in this volume. That man really loved his country. He became cold-blooded in order to make sure that Okinawa would survive. In the end, it was Shuri that got Japan to back off thanks to some connections and cleverness. That was a joy to see.

Too bad Sarasa and Shuri are separated again. Shuri does get himself some new followers, though and he's determined to start over, this time, on his terms. He wants to be a dictator. Sarasa wants Japan to be a democracy. How can they both do what's best when their ideals match, but the goal to realize it is so different?! Yuna thinks Shuri needs to tell Sarasa that he's the Red King. What will happen?

Meanwhile, Ageha has brought Sejun to Sakurajima so that she can have her child in relative safety. Of course, he doesn't tell her that it's Tatara's base and she is NOT happy when she finds out. She tries to kill Tatara and ends up revealing the secret Sarasa has kept for so long, but was ready to reveal after talking with Unten. Everyone took it really well. I'm happy for her. Asagi isn't happy she revealed it herself, but it looks like he still has more up his sleeve. What will he do next?

It looks like the group has new trouble, though. Hayato and Shota went to the northeast to meet with the rebels fighting the Black King, but it looks like they weren't welcome. It's looking like the North is where Sarasa will be heading to next.

Let’s 👏🏻 talk 👏🏻 about 👏🏻 Okinawa 👏🏻 and 👏🏻 Hokkaido 👏🏻

Gods! Does this series just get better and better with being thrillingly fanciful and cutting edge modern (for it’s time)! Books 9 on past 12 (I only have that many) talk very in depth about the issues surrounding Okinawa and Hokkaido, as they were in the 1990’s and y’all, it’s intense and so on point. I cannot even begin to describe how well done the social and political commentary on these two parts of Japan are displayed in these books. The deep rooted feeling of “un-Japanese-ness” that Okinawans faced in the 90’s (similar to the struggles of Hong Kong’s identity crisis of today) and the deep cultural otherness of Hokkaido (think Indigenous identity as depicted in the US today) are both explored in these two specific arcs! Please check out this series for and interesting and eye opening commentary of Japanese identity as it was and in some ways continues to be.

They missed each other so much and only spared a few days together before she leaves him again. He is overcome with her loss. He continues on to find his way back to his kingdom. The friends at Okinawa discovers his identity when he posed as the dead Red King during his help with the plot to scare the armies from invasion, the Phantom ship of the Red King. Dr. Bansho finds out she is Tatara and sees in both her and Shuri demon eyes and military spirit.

Un très bon tome qui conclu l'arc d'Okinawa et permet à Tatara d'avoir une meilleure vision de l'avenir. J'aime beaucoup comment petit à petit elle prend confiance en elle et son objectif évolue.

***

The last chapter of this showed me that I didn't really care for the Okinawa arc. I don't know if it was because it felt slower or that it wasn't about Sarasa directly or what, but I was super happy that in the last chapter of this volume Sarasa made it back to her friends and they were making plans for what to do next.

And Sarasa finally reveals herself to her friends here and I was so happy. While I wasn't demanding that it happen, it's nice that she clears the air with her friends since a large internal conflict for her is that she wasn't sure her friends would accept her since she was the "real Tatara." Also, it's nice that it didn't continue throughout the whole series. That's not to say that everyone, including Shuri, knows her secret, just those Sarasa is traveling with to defeat King Ukon. Though I suspect it won't happen for a while yet, I am eager to see how Shuri and Sarasa act when they found out who the other is.

Also, I like where Shuri is headed after this volume. In the last chapter, he's on a ship with Yuna and Nakijin and he's making plans so overthrow his father. I think it's great how we're being shown that Shuri can be a good person, but that he still isn't quite one of the "good guys."
