World building, character growth, references, cheeky romance plot, character background stories, more plot. All in 1 volume

The romance is so incongruous with the overall tonality of this volume. Here the two are fighting a war, blowing ships off, and thwarting enemies while also writing the most childish love letters to each other. It just so jarring to see that immature side of these characters when their reality is so much larger than life.

There is a plot point here so stupid I can't ignore it (seriously. How did 2 people mean to take cannons to the shore BY SWIMMING like I thought they had never seen cannons before, which makes sense and would explain why they had such a stupid idea in mind but then they know how to FIRE the cannons like wtf. Are you kidding me) but other than that I really enjoyed the action, as well as the art and I liked the characters that were introduced here, the political intrigue, the hint of romance (not so much the main couple, I'm not a big fan of them) and the battle scenes as well as the concepts -particularly the importance of symbols in relation to power.

The solutions for problems are sometimes too simple and unrealistic, the mini-antagonists are with a few exceptions extraordinarily stupid and I wish for more relationship development but I’m still in.

I can see why this was iconic in 90s Japan- a girl who takes the place of her deceased twin brother to commit a revolution. I just want a little more plot/faster pacing but maybe I’m part of the short attention span generation. Going to keep going but not as captivated as I hoped

We get early on into the ways that Shuri is both a horrible person and a great leader. And then sometimes a wonderful person. But still a d***.

Synopsis:

Sarasa and her new friend Hayato are captured by pirates who plan to sell them off as slaves. On the pirate ship, they reunite with Old Kaku, whom Sarasa had feared dead. A fight with the spirited female captain ends in a draw, but will Sarasa do as well in a battle with the treacherous Shojos?

My Thoughts:

Sarasa and Hayato are really surprised when they find Sakurajima in the state it's in. How are they supposed to get their hands on the Suzaku sword now? If that isn't bad enough, they get captured by pirates that want to sell them to foreign countries. They learn that if you break the rules, you have to do the "Death Dance" with the chief, a woman named Chacha. The Death Dance is basically a sword fight on the bow of the ship above shark infested waters. Apparently, Chacha has never lost.

Sarasa wants to get the pirates on her side when she discovers they hate the Shojo Clan, but it isn't so easy. Lucky for her, Kaku is on board the pirate ship. However, Sarasa challenges Chacha to the Death Dance saying that if she loses, the pirates can sell her, but if she wins, they have to follow her. Amazingly, she does win, but then the Red Army lead by Shido with Ageha in tow shows up and things really get crazy. Sarasa has to find a cannon on board the Suzaku flagship within an hour so that they can defeat the Red Army or Zaki-Chacha's protector-will kill her and give her head to the Red Army. She pulls off what should be impossible and the Red Army isn't in much of a good condition now.

Meanwhile, Shuri has his own problems. Someone uses Tatara's name and nearly starts a war with one of the foreign countries, but Shuri isn't fooled. He knows what his brother is up to. He does something drastic when he figures it out and now he cannot go to aid Shido. What will happen now?

Nah inilah jadinya kalau seseorang seperti saya mementingkan cover diatas segalanya.

Nothing in this volume really stuck out to me and made me go "oh my god!!" like with the previous two volumes, however, I still really enjoyed it.

I'm interested to see how Chacha, the pirate captain, will influence Sarasa, either just has a woman Sarasa looks up to or as a friend (depending on how the story goes, I'd be happy with either).

I love how it was mentioned in this volume that Sarasa isn't very good at some things (swordfighting being one), but how even though she hasn't been trained like her brother had been, she's still a good leader and problem solver. I thought her idea to .

Again, this volume shows that Shuri is a complicated character. He's kind to Senju, Shido's wife, . I love the juxtaposition and I can't wait to see what he's going to do next and how interacting with Sarasa will influence him.

This is a really great manga! The action is thrilling, the story is full of intrigue, suspense and many unexpected twists and turns and the characters are colorful and compelling. There were so many dramatic moments in this book, but especially the eruption of Sakura island from out of the sea, and Shindo thought, 'Has God become Tatara's ally?'. I love the artwork in this, I don't normally like the long head/small face/thick neck style, but the art is so detailed and expertly shaded that it really works - there is real depth to the frames to match the depth of the story. I am terribly impressed with the multifaceted nature of the characters, especially Shuri and Shindo; I love how this story shows all the characters perspectives. You can't help but be sympathetic to Shuri and Shindo, even grow to like them, even as you hope they lose - the reality that their characters will probably die makes you sad, even though they are the villains of the story. It's a very emotionally engaging story, I'm really enjoying this series! I can hardly wait to get my hands on the next book!

Haha! How many shojo manga have heroines who run around firing cannons at battle ships?! This is just one reason of many that I love Basara and Yumi Tamura. Definitely not your stereotypical shojo manga or author. Really glad she’s still creating manga! (I want to see the stage version of Basara one day…)

I’m very glad to see the ebooks do retain the editor’s comments (I guess maybe volume one just didn’t have a comments section.) They’re a joy to read.

My favorite scene(s) in this volume:
- Sarasa and Chacha’s BF swimming underwater, using the shark to mask their presence
- Ageha being coy

I wasn’t super into Shido and the princess on previous reads (I don’t think) but I can see their appeal as characters.

…I’m surprised the blue king is introduced as early as book three! I guess he is a pretty central character.

Sarasa got captured and the pirates in the ship told her that she was going to be sold to be a slave. If you dont do what the cook says you will be challenged in a death dance. A death dance is not really a dance it is a fight that you have to knock down the other person before they knock you down and if you get knocked out sharks will be waiting for you and eat you up.

Tarata got a canyon and started to distroy everything and everyone that distroyed her village and her people like her parents as well. Tartara and the cook that was almost going to sale her as a slave teamed up wih her because Tartara won when they fought.

My favorite character is introduced in this volume: Cha-cha. She's so awesome. Again, Tatara is forced to prove herself, and on the way, gain allies. Shuri is hot and shows his nice side along with his honorable, badass side. There is definitely more action in this one. Basically, the story gets even more complex. Especially with the hints of the Blue king (who is literally insane, but you don't know that yet), Shuri's older brother.

So, here we have pirates! Sadly, no ninja. This book was interesting and fun, and I don't have much to say besides that I enjoyed it. I also liked the ending solution as to what to do when one is trapped between the people who betrayed Hayato's ancestor, and Shido and the Red King's Army. Good, creative thinking there.

And here I am, yet again, unsure what to think of this series. I hate the art and am still about confused about the whole story, but this volume also presents some intruiging promises of things to come, sandwiched between boring parts that consist of the main character crying and doubting herself....
