Throwing in the towel at 67% and believe me that is ample time to get a feel for this story. It's not bad but I never connected with this weird alternate universe it was just too confusing at times. I applaud the author for writing so much but this one didn't keep me hooked till the end.

Okay unfortunately I cannot remember when I read this because... I'm a fool and downloaded the .epub but didn't realize it was on Goodreads so I didn't track my reading progress. BUT! I did indeed read this sometime during 2019 and very thoroughly enjoyed it. Really excellent characterization, solid pacing, a good "getting the team together over time" story set within a unique take on the Star Trek XI universe. Hell yes!

ETA upon re-read in 2024: MAN THIS FIC RIPS. High action, high drama, high ROMANCE. I'm sad that the sequel which whochick teased back in 2011 upon completion of Leave No Soul Behind doesn't exist, because I want to see what's next for the crew of the Enterprise, and I want to know what the hell is going on with that Eli character. I'm thinking he's somehow Kirk and Spock's Alternate Universe Son? Why else would Whochick keep making such a big deal of his singular, not-super-Vulcan attitudes and his notably hazel eyes?

The only critique I really have on this reread is a bit of a mismatch between plotting, pacing, and "show don't tell" after Shit Breaks Really Bad With Nero. We *hear* that Jim is fucked up after Spock is forced away from EPAS, and we *hear* that Spock not only tried to self-sacrifice and hurt his hands real bad but also that he... got crazy sick? Got blood in his lungs somehow? We *see* VERY BRIEFLY that Jim has left EPAS and has gone to work elsewhere, and that no one could find him until he wanted to be found and showed up on Bones' doorstep... It just felt like a whole Montage of Time Passing And Things Being Bad While Time Passed, which doesn't actually add up with the rest of the pacing and plotting of the rest of the fic. Otherwise, though, what a fucking ride. Whochick if you're out there PLEASE drop that sequel... if Cleanwhiteroom can un-retire and un-vanish themselves to drop a DCWT sequel I believe that you can do it here... please! We're rooting for you!

One of the most fantastic pieces of fan-fiction I’ve had the pleasure to read. Very pithy, emotive, and descriptive. Intelligence and creativity just oozes from every chapter and whochick weaves a very beautiful adventure. Anyone who finds themselves pining after Star Trek works that make you feel like you’re experiencing the “real thing”, this is it. Leave No Soul Behind has a sound plot, a soul-fraying (yet not smutty) romance and action beyond compare of most fan-fictions, let alone stand-alone novels I’ve read in recent memory.

As someone who normally stays very, very far from AU works, I was incredibly pleased that this piece not only kept my attention but surprised me at how much I was able to enjoy it. It came highly recommended to me and after the first chapter, I was hooked. AU haters, don’t let your prejudice stop you from trying out this work. It’s a one-in-a-million. I’m so happy it didn’t stop me.

The best Star Trek fanfic, if not the best fanfic, ever written - well worth the massive investment of time to read! My only remaining question - who the eff is Eli??

Wow, so it has an entry on the GR now.
LNSB was finished in 2011. It is an AU - I think most of the negative reviews reflect just how much of an AU it is - but at the time when neither STiD or much-anticipated STB hasn't happened yet, it was as much as an AU for AOS as the Discovery is right now.
I've read it twice by the end of 2012, and keep re-reading parts of it. Vega and San-Francisco chapters are so far my favourites. I hated Vega chapter - the first chapter, the mermaid chapter - and did not understand it the first time I've read it. Maybe this first chapter is as an insurmountable obstacle for a lot of non-native readers as it was for me back then.
I don't know whether it all just hit close to the home, or had pushed all the right buttons (sci-fi, emergency services, warzones, actual competent adults trying to handle their jobs and emotions and, last but in no way the least, wonderful Whochick's writing), but by now I think I've read one singular novel that left the similar imprint on my soul as "Leave no Soul Behind" - Yanagihara's "Little Life". LNSB packs much more action and pulls much more punches, but the raw devastation you feel when you read these two works? Somewhat similar.
By now I think I know all of the plot inconsistencies (like, what's Kirk's actual age at the beginning and the end?), and they do drive me insane, but you know what? It's almost 260k words long, it was finished in less than two years, by - as far as I know, unless Whochick is a bunch of lit professors in one trenchcoat - one single person (no editors, no nothing) in less than 2 years. And the quality of these 260k is by far better than most contemporary sci-fi books.

I was hesitant about approaching it, after all, it is a slightly AUish at the first glance, but oh my, what a story is this. If you are hesitating too, this is the sign, that you should not. You should go ahead, read this, and join me in my joy.

Every fandom has few of THE FICS. You know which one. They get quoted, worshipped, hated for their perfection, they get fanvids (the fanvid for this is so cool!) and the get read. When I move into the fandom, by me.

Pointers!
- great plot
- awesome setting
- incredibly written
- it will consume your soul and spit it out AFTER you're done, all chewed, but you're gonna like it
- tragedy, comedy, action, but also few sappy moments.
- it's long, so beware of losing sleep over it.
- it has entry on GR ;)))

100% recommended.

An amazing and epic Star Trek fanfiction. It has it all, incredible writing and characterizations, action, adventure, romance, angst. This is one of the best fanfictions out there.
