I received Hunted: Cycle Thirteen: Book 1 in return for an honest review as part of the tour hosted by InkSpell Publishing. Skye isn't human she’s part of the unicorn race and because of this she’s had to keep her secret even from her best friend leaving her alone with nothing but her diary Jenny. Skye’s special gift is seeing and healing but she also attracts love so when an attractive new boy at school show’s an interest she just assumes it’s her gift. Having enough of keeping her secret Skye confides in her long time best friend Jules needing someone to talk to who understands who she really is.

During the night of the Grease performance she sees a real unicorn in the audience but she isn't the only one and it changes everything. The new boy’s name is Mike she learns he also saw the unicorn, and he’s not human like she thought. However she still thinks it’s her gift that causes him to fall in love with her but let’s herself fall in love with him for the first time ever she’s truly happy but its short lived. When she’s almost kidnapped from her job at Hot Topic her family will need to find out who is targeting her before it’s too late

Skye is a tough girl learning to deal with her gifts, in a world alone which can’t be easy. Thankfully she has her journal Jenny to ramble to because I know I would be going crazy not having anyone to talk to. She also has a best friend who when she learns the truth accepts her for who she really is even if she does get jealous when Skye starts dating Mike. I found Skye to be one of those characters you can easily connect with. I wasn't sure at first about her whirl wind romance with Mike but by the end I thought they went well together.

I was intrigued by the synopsis right from the start it grabs your attention screaming read me. I found the unicorn concept exciting, and the author makes it even better by putting her own unique spin on it. I think the author has created a fantastic new series that will capture the imagination as well as the heart. I enjoyed the character even the love at first sight romance because it’s sweet and I’m a sucker for a sweet romance. I think the idea for Skye, her family, Mike and the rest of her people is really innovative I just really love the idea of unicorn people. I was drawn into the story right from the start it’s a fast paced romance that intertwines danger throughout. I couldn't put it down I just had to know how it would end. I hope to see more books in the series since the first one was a perfect start.

Original post can be found at: http://www.nerdprobs.com/books/book-r...

I have read The Southern Vampire Mysteries (aka the Sookie Stackhouse Series) as well as The Vampire Diaries Series. If you really wanted to you could add the Harry Potter Series to the list. So I am really no stranger to supernatural/paranormal based books. So when I offered to read this book I naturally assumed I knew what I was preparing to read.

Skye is what you would think of as a typical teenager. She likes boys but keeps them at bay. She knows they like her because of the power that she holds over them. She works part time at Hot Topic with her best friend Jules. She goes to a what we would call an “AP” school. But Skye has a secret. At 8 years old she found out that she was a unicorn. She is on her 13th life cycle. This is where her power over boys comes in. Her gemstone is Rose Quartz which seems to attract all kinds of boys. They think they love her but it’s just the gem. She usually can pull off a “crazy chick” routine and all is well. That is until meets Mike. Mike comes into Hot Topic routinely just so he can catch a glimpse of her. Jules doesn’t understand why Skye refuses to get involved with him. That is until Skye lets her in on her families secret. Jules is flabbergasted but is tickled that her best friend would trust her that much to let her in on the secret. Jules slowly begins to understand why Skye has a hard time dating guys. But all that changes when Skye passes out at a drama performance at the school. She finds out later that while everyone rushed to her side, Mike beat everyone there. Later that night, while she was laying in bed, Mike shows up and asks if she saw what he saw in the wings of the auditorium, a unicorn. She admits that she did. This revelation leads to her and her family realizing that Mike is a unicorn. One that the unicorns all thought died in a horrible fire that killed his parents 10 years ago. Can Mike, Skye and the other unicorns band together to save their race from the unicorn hunter?

I will say this I was totally not expecting the whole unicorn angle. It was certainly a new angle on the whole supernatural/paranormal genre for me. The book did keep me reading and at times wanting more. I would catch my breath at stressful situations and “aww” at cute moments. However, the book is written at a fairly low level. It kind of reminded me of something that would be written in a high school short story class. Simple wording and very juvenile antics. I felt the writing could have been more in depth and have more developed characters. I will say that if there is a sequel to the book I would probably read it as the author left us with a major cliffhanger. I truly have to find out what happens to Skye and Mike and the rest of the unicorn race.

Three out of Five stars.

As you got from the blurb, Hunted is about Skye, who’s living her thirteenth cycle on this Earth as a human. She’s been living with a secret: she and her parents are members of the Unicorn race. Each of them has been given a hand-picked stone that delivers a unique power to the wearer. Skye has the power of persuasion, as she constantly has unwanted guys flocking to her. Unfortunately, they don’t really want Skye, they’re just drawn to her because of her gift. Which means, she has to negate her own power and send them packing. When Skye meets, Mike Evans, however, she doesn’t want to send him away. In fact, she’s as drawn to him as all of those other guys have been to her.

When she does a tell-all with her best friend, Jules and reveals her secret, Skye begins to find out more about her family and their race. Including the fact that there are other sentient creatures out there. Skye’s parents claim they can all live in peace, but what if one of them’s really after Skye?

There’s nothing I like more than picking up a new book with an original storyline. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I dig vampires and werewolves, but there have been times when I wished for a main character that was just a little bit different. Kaelin delivers different in spades in her debut release, Hunted. The quirky characters as well as the original storyline, kept my interest from start to finish.
One thing that I would have liked to see more of, however, is a slower pace. In many cases, things were moving so quickly, that I felt as though I didn’t get to spend enough time with the characters or see their reactions as fully as I would have hoped. However, Hunted was a solid debut and I’d be interested to read more of Jill Kaelin’s work in the future.

Bottom Line: Buy, read it, and get on board because yes, ladies and gentlemen, Unicorns do exist. And they're pretty darn cool!

I haven't really read many unicorn themed books, so I thought it was worth a shot. I enjoyed the mythology building for the unicorn race and loved learning their history. I loved the idea that a select group of humans are descended from the mythical unicorns. It was all very mystical and fascinating.

The premise of this book was very interesting and I felt like it is a great stepping stone for a series. I'm excited to see what will happen with the unicorn race now that they have an enemy looking to take them all out.

The only thing I had a hard time with was the love at first site with Skye and Mike. I have a hard time with this type of love story. I enjoy the ones where people fall in love over time. This did not take away from the book, because as you read along their instalove makes more sense and you understand their need to be together.

I will say my favourite scene is a fight scene, which is unusual for me. I think I enjoyed it because you get to see the majesty of the unicorn race in all it's glory. And the entire scene is like something out of a bad dream - creepy, heart thumping and intense.

I also really enjoyed the scenes with Skye and her best friend, Jules. Her BFF brings some comic relief to the story and is the epitome of what a best friend should be.

I am looking forward to reading more about Skye and her life: past and present. I think this series has potential for being a new world builder for unicorns.

I’ve read books with paranormal creatures like vampires, werewolves, witches, ghosts, zombies, angels, and other made-up creatures authors can think of. But Hunted took me by surprise when its fantastical, mystical creature was a UNICORN. Initially, My Little Pony came into mind.

Alright, to be honest, the unicorn theme was a bit of a turn off, but I shouldn’t let my narrow-mindedness stop me from reading. The author lets us get into the mind of Skye, a sixteen-year-old unicorn-girl, and her struggles as she goes through high school. She’s a regular teen, except she’s a unicorn, who has a magical gem stone, and she has outlived a cat by FOUR LIVES.

What I love about Hunted is how the author crafted a whole new world of species with odd traditions and culture. Unicorn-culture is a new experience for me, which fascinated me. I’d love to know more about it.

If you’re tired of the same vampire, werewolf, and zombie books out there, then try Hunted. I guarantee you’ll enjoy the teen romance and you’d probably want to join PETA to protect the unicorns.

Jill Kaelin brings to life a magical story that breathes air into the oftentimes overlooked mystical creatures - Unicorns, in her recent release, Hunted: Cycle Thirteen: Book 1. It's true that we've all read the ever popular vampire, zombie and witch and wizard novels but take a moment to add to your ever-growing collection a story about a teen unicorn-girl name Skye has a great secret and reveals to us a unique and intriguing unicorn culture and it's traditions that will leave you absolutely breathless!

This was such a unique story that you can't help but fall in love for the characters and really fall for Skye's conundrum. Kaelin writing style will engage you from the first page until the last and races us to through this fantastical story that you nearly wish would slow just to let you catch your breath. This is an exhilarating and original story that you will certainly not regret. If you're looking for something new, do yourself a favor and pick up Hunted!

First, I would like to thank the author Jill Kaelin for giving me this book for an honest review. I really enjoyed this story about Unicorns, it was a change of pace for me. The characters were nicely developed. I do wish that Skye had been a little less insecure or had better self-esteem at times. I mean she came from a nice family, no abuse, nothing to have low self-esteem about if you ask me. I understand one of her powers made her doubt, that is understandable, but not the low self-esteem. (that is just my opinion) Other than that the story was pretty good, I liked Skye's parents her best friend Jules and her boyfriend Mike. There were a couple of times I came across some editing issues, but nothing that would make you turn away from the story. I hope there is going to be more stories I would love to read more about these unicorns.

Full Review at: What's Beyond Forks?

I haven't read many books about Unicorns yet, which is surprising because I've always loved the idea of Unicorns. You just don't really come across too many books about them. So, for me, this book offered something different, and on top of that, I'd never seen these creatures portrayed quite this way either. I'm a little unsure about the blurb that goes with this book though, as it doesn't entirely match the plot. I wasn't disappointed by that at all, it just made me wonder. I enjoyed the story quite a bit. It was highly original, and offered some twists to keep things interesting. I think the Young Adult audience would really enjoy this story.

Awesome read!!

Excellent read. Having grown up in Port Orange and a graduate of Spruce Creek, I found the locations relatable and felt like i was actually there with Skye and the unis. The book describes scenes that creates a movie in your mind without so many descriptive words to get smothered and lost. I highly recommend!!

A fantastic journey

Skye and Mike are star crossed loves. Their destiny was created without their knowledge or consent. This story takes the reader on a journey to the fantasy world of Unicorns, and other creatures who might love among us. Enjoy the trip.
