Nexus Omnibus Volume 4 collects Nexus #40-52 and The Next Nexus #1.

It took me a little longer to gnaw through this than I expected because of what I suspect was a sinus infection and watching All In the Family on IMDB TV. Anyway, the fourth Nexus Omnibus is pretty solid.

The continued disintegration of the Gravity Well, the impending trial of Kreed, and a return to the Bowl Shaped World are the overarching plots in this volume. Nexus, along with Judah and Badger, head to the Bowl Shaped World to save Earth from the impending implosion of the Gravity Well and the resulting destruction of the solar system. Meanwhile, those damn Loomis sisters are up to something in the background.

Steve Rude continues to be aces on the art. I'm in awe of how much he accomplishes with so few extra lines, confident minimalism at its finest. Paul Smith did a few fill-ins and I'd say he's the best stand-in Steve Rude in the business.

The ending of this one upsets the status quo in a way that would never allowed in a Big Two book. I was planning on taking a long Nexus break before starting the fifth omnibus but it's probably only going to be a week now. Four out of five stars.

Nexus, by for the most part, Mike Baron and Steve Rude, is the greatest independent comic of the late 80's and early 90's. Started at Wisconsin's Capitol comics, picked up by First (the best independent of that era) and now with Dark Horse. Nexus is the story of Horatio Hellpop, chosen by the Merk to be the conscience of humanity. His love is Sundra Peale, once a spy for the Web, his best friend is Judah "Fred" Maccabee, Thune and licensed Adjucator of justice. Other characters are Dave the Thune (Fred's father), Kreed and Sinclair the Quatro Gucci assassins, and so many more. This volume sees the pair joined by another great character, Badger, a slightly unhinged hero from earth, as they return to the Bowl shaped world. I won't say anymore other than Nexus never gets old and is eminently re-readable!
