Before I Am

Rate this book

è come l'onda dell' oceano.

Never have I felt meditative while reading a book until Mooji's Before I Am. There are pockets of profoundness expressed in such a beautifully simple manner. The others portions contrast this simplicity with a very meta "who am I, who are you" dissection. The book goes into the great introspection of one's self and a separation of your ego and its connection to your mind and body. The question being asked is: Who is the thinker behind the thoughts? Who are you when you take away your mind and body and come to realize your "true" self? The concepts/themes in this book reminded me of one of my favorite bands, The Contortionist, and some lyrics from their song, The Parable:

You are the perceiver, that perceived the parable, the never ending end.
You are the infinite (Intuit), you are the finite (Fire).
You are, you are, you are, you are

Mooji argues that all suffering is rooted in ego and the connection it has to the temporal state of your body and mind and how disconnecting yourself from it results in the joy of simple being. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone first getting into philosophy or spirituality due to the meta nature of the book but found it to be an enjoyable and meditative read.

Before I Am is not just a book, it’s more like a mirror for the heart. Mooji presents the teachings of Advaita Vedanta in a way that feels direct, simple, and deeply alive. Instead of overwhelming the reader with philosophy, he points again and again to the pure awareness that exists before thoughts, before identity, before the “I” that we habitually cling to.
What I found most powerful is that this is not a book to be read quickly. It’s a book to sit with, to return to, to let the words dissolve into silence. Each passage feels like a meditation in itself—sometimes confronting, but always compassionate.
For anyone drawn to non-duality, self-inquiry, or teachers like Ramana Maharshi or Nisargadatta Maharaj, Before I Am is a profound companion. It reminds us that liberation is not something to achieve, but something to notice—already present here and now.

An interesting writting presenting dialogues between Mooji and attendees of his events, the format of the book is presented in the question and answer format, presenting various ways in which to be able to live in the here and now without being influenced by passing thoughts or past experiences. The book really shines in the way that this mindfulness awareness is presented and it gives different ways to access it depending on the individual experiences and personality. This book have a little bit for everyone that seeks to live in the here and now.

This was one of my favorite books by one of my favorite authors! Before I Am by Mooji is an experience in itself. As you read you feel and experience the depths of Mooji’s teaching. This book helps you get past mind to your Higher Self. I could feel something beyond working as I read the book. I could not put it down. Mooji is very detailed in his writing to make the reader truly understand and “feel” his points. The book teaches that we are not the body, yet something far beyond. It touches upon non duality. The book helps you to focus on the awareness beyond. Who are you? This is one of the simplest yet deepest inquires you can have. “Who Am I?” Who is this “I” we speak of? Reading this book was a Powerful experience. In my case, life changing. It helped me to get past mind and to recognize the Higher Self resonating within at all times. Focusing on your “Being”. Before I Am is a very Powerful experience for anyone looking to take their spiritual journey having a human experience further. Being open minded will reap you the most benefits from reading this book.

While most of it's technically true, most of it's useless... bedtime stories about waking up to keep people inside the dream. Cool if you like sleeping, not so much if you want to wake up.
