Creative and Satisfying Sequel

Silenced 2: The Overtaking by Raebeth Buda is the perfect sequel and tie-up to the first book, Silenced. Amber struggles with depression, anger issues and self-hurting in the form of cutting. While reading the Overtaking, you get to go on the whole journey from Amber’s point of view and even what it’s like to be in a counseling session for behavioral issues. There were parts of this book that took my breath away. Amber is a very complex and colorful person with many emotions. Her mistrust of men, even her boyfriend, Landon at times is creatively brought out. The only real trust Amber can surrender to is her new relationship with God.

Raebeth is an excellent story teller and has a talent for making the reader believe what is happening is real.

Amber and Landon continue their journey by moving in together. Little does Landon know Amber is still struggling to keep her cutting in control. When her friend accidentally commits suicide, it is the final straw. We follow Amber's struggle to get help. This is an amazing story that hooks you in from the beginning and sends you on an emotional roller coaster. You can relate to these characters on a personal level, which to me makes the book a masterpiece. WaAR

It's based on some very real stuff that happens to a lot of kids. I've actually met kids that self mutilated, they were ones my kids hung around with. Most of them didn't do it over a number of years though as far as I know. In some ways the story is kind of a personal one for me. I think it is good how Amber found her way out of the darkness.

I was really drawn to this series after I finished the first book Silenced (look below for the summary of that book and I have a review for it on my blog). I felt the drama and the reality of a cutter was portrayed very realistically in that book, so it saddens me to find in this book some of the reality was not there to end this series. The two books are great, and I recommend you read them, but please be aware if you are easily offended with the idea that you can stop a mental issue with prayer, God and a support group alone, you will be more than likely be offended. For some this does work, but I fear that it will turn off a lot of people who are struggling because it seems the answer is so easy, when to some it isn’t.

As for me, I glad to see Amber finally accept this as an issue that deserved to be put first on the priority list. I was glad she was able to find the answers she had been searching for in the first book. It pleased me to see that she didn’t have to carry her secret around like a anchor alone any more. It was unfortunate that it all came out at such a stressful and sad time in her life, but thankful it did.

Book two doesn’t have the intense feelings as the first book, there really aren’t any edge of your seat moments but then if you have been through recovery of any kind, you know that it is a slow paced journey where sometimes you aren’t even able to put one foot in front of the other, so it does maintain the realism with that. So to the point of Faith and God that was included in this book. I for one find it nice to see the new path that Amber took into her spirituality. I, being a firm believer in God, could relate to points that she was making in the book. I just found that also as a recovering person from my own demons, the spiritual part of Amber’s recovery over shadowed the reality that I and many others had to endure to get to the point we are at right now. I am not trying to lessen the power of prayer and Faith in any way, but I do believe we are humans and forgiving ourselves is the hardest part of our journey.

When all is said and done, I would recommend this series, especially to a self injurer or anyone struggling with addiction of any form. It was well written and the characters were developed well. It was realistic of the struggle to keep your secrets and deal with life and emotions as you have learned to do, but I would warn, it won’t fit everyone’s idea of recovery. Some will find the fact she didn’t resist treatment harder more fiction than truth, some will take great strength in her behavior and find the courage in themselves to reach out for help after reading. This is really one of those topics you won’t please everyone but I think the author did a great job in showing this side of cutting and recovery.

I was gifted this by the author in return of an honest review.

After reading Silenced I knew I had to read Overtaking. I have loved both of these books and look forward to future books by Raebeth McGee. Raebeth knows how to make her characters carry you completely through the story. The emotion Raebeth writes with is amazing and so heartfelt.

So many times while reading I wished I could just reach out and grab Amber and shake her silly, then hug her til she couldn't breath. When she was strong she was very strong but weakness had more strength so many times, that I spend many moments while reading thinking
"Come on Amber fight, fight the urges do not let darkness win". Then I would sit back and praise her when her strength came through stronger than ever. Landon frustrated me several times but I had to think" Hey he is scared and unsure of how to help" and sometimes with the uncertainty of a situation it is better to stay back.

It wasn't enough for Amber to move to a new state away from her BFF, but then to find out that Dave is not her father, only to find out her Bio dad is her new BFF's dad Alex. That alone would make anyone depressed. But then to lose your BFF to an accidental suicide and fall into a deeper depression and darkness to gain more strength. Amber needed to find the power to fight and through the Lord, family, friends and the support of others that have been right in her shoes Amber has found her saving grace.

My review is not so much about the storyline itself but how no matter how bad things maybe there is always a bright light at the end. Family, friends, and support groups are always a big help. But most of all Jesus will always always be there for you all you have to do is ask. There is nothing you could do that would make him turn you away. So when you think your helpless and lost remember you are never alone just turn to him and he will give you the strength and courage to see there anything.

Raebeth McGee Buda, has again brought tears to my eyes but made me smile at the end.

I give the Overtaking 10 + stars

This is the second book in the Silenced Series. I really enjoyed it, and struggled to put it down!

Amber Brown is a very complex character, who suffers from a terrible secret - she cuts when she feels stressed or upset. I really liked her character, but wished she didn't self-harm.

This story continues from the end of the first book. Amber is devastated by the news of the death of her best friend, Sarah, and accidentally makes a fatal mistake. Her secret gets found out, but finds that Landon, her boyfriend, begins to distance himself just when she needs him the most. I really felt that Landon had been very supportive of Amber in the first book, so I was totally shocked and disappointed when he began to pull away from her. He began to act like a total jerk! I wanted to be very violent with him!
Amber, on the other hand, begins to find some answers and build her life back together. I was cheering her on! This is the story of her struggle, and how she begins to seek help. This book does have a religious aspect to it, but it is not preachy.

Depression is a silent disease that affects a lot of people in various ways. Most people have had a mild case of depression at one time or another, but others could be a danger to themselves if not helped. This book is an emotionally laden story that brings this subject into the light. Many people suffer with depression every day, and have no clue that they have it. If you suspect that you or a family member may suffer from depression, I strongly advise that help is sought as quickly as possible.

RaeBeth McGee-Buda has written a deeply touching and powerful story that is a MUST READ! I am now looking forward to reading more books by this author.

This is a fantastic book, which I highly recommend, but it also has scenes that can be disturbing for readers of a nervous disposition. - Lynn Worton

Amber is a cutter. The only control she feels. Her world is a bit confusing and the only way to relieve the pain is by cutting herself. One cutting too deep. Amber wakes up in a hospital. Not remembering how she got there. Her secret is out. She gets ordered to therapy and a support group just for cutters. Amber loses people she cares about. She needs them. She doesn't like to feel alone. So she cuts to relieve the darkness that has taken over. Amber struggles as she finds out who her dad is. She finds out she has a sister. Her mom has lied to her the better part of her life. When darkness starts to take control, Amber finds comfort with, Kristen, a fellow cutter within the group. Kristen tells Amber that she fights her urges of cutting by giving herself to God. Amber doesn't know what to think about that. Her boyfriend, Landon, is having a tough time watching his mom sick with cancer. He doesn't want to hear about Amber rambling about something he does not believe in. His mom is dyeing. Landon can't believe in a God that would take his momma from him. Landon needs time apart to think. No support from Landon, Amber decides to move on. Kristen gets Amber to go to church with her. Strange feelings at first. Amber gets her sister, Casey to go to church with them. All three goes to church every Sunday. Amber is beginning to feel the happiness overtake the darkness inside her. It's a great feeling. With God she will be able to control the urges of darkness. Amber has the support of her family and friends. Landon comes around and joins them in supporting his love, Amber.

Great story from beginning to end. I recommend this read for you and your young adult teen. Signs and warnings inside a cutters everyday struggle to take control of themselves. Before reading, I never understood why one would cause such pain to themselves. Thank you Raebeth, for making me aware.

You pick up exactly where book one left off. You have Amber who has found out her best friend has died, and she is taking it really hard that she is cutting herself.

Now she stopped when she started dating Landon, but as soon as her world tipped over because of Sarah it started back up again. You follow Amber through her journey of trying to stop hurting herself and others. She becomes closer to God which I think is just amazing. Amber also finds out who her real father is, and she learns why her mom hid it from her. But will this help Amber or cause her to cut herself even more?

Now there is a lot of talk about God in this book, but please do not let this stop you from reading this story. I gave this book 4 stars but it is more like 4.5, only reason being it was hard for me to connect myself with Amber this time around. I felt she became more outspoken quicker than she did in book one. Do not get me wrong I think her standing up, speaking her mind is great but it was like it happened so quickly in the story rather than build up. And the way her and Landon fought it just didn't seem real to me as far as the way arguments between couples go. But that is just me.

Amber gets a lot of support later on, and actually makes a new friend who helps guide her through what she is going through. We learn more as to why Amber feels she needs to cut and harm herself. The title of the book says it all. You can overcome anything through family, friends, support, and most of all Jesus. The ending was a great little twist for me and though it was perfect for this story. This author did a terrific job.

"Silenced 2: The Overtaking" by Raebeth McGee-Buda is a powerful, emotional and at times even slightly uncomfortable read but one that is certainly worth your while. It's main character is Amber, a young woman who lives with an addiction to cut herself.
Despite a supportive surrounding and a loving boyfriend depression and the desire to cut herself are always present in her life.
The author takes us into Amber's head with raw honesty and empathy that makes the experience very realistic.
The book offers a lot of insight into the mind of a cutter which makes Amber a character you are unlikely to forget and some scenes about the cutting very edgy.
There are several other important figures in Amber's life, not least her boyfriend, who is at times ambiguous in his feelings and ability to support her. They create a wonderful reflection for Amber's feelings and give us further insight into the situation for those around a cutter.
When Amber's former best friend gives in to the darkness it confronts Amber with her past and her still present demons. Amber is convinced she has spoken to her dead friend, which brings further distance between herself and her surroundings. Can new friends, medication and a psychologist help?
This is a great character piece drawing an important issue to our attention. There is a strong Christian theme in some of the discussions between the characters that adds a philosophical and theological element to the story.
This is a strong follow up to Silenced 1 and a reminder that darkness, depression and addiction don't magically disappear with a happy ending, but are a constant cross to bear for some of us.
Educational and compelling; a must read.

I was excited to read this book after reading Silenced (Book 1) months and months ago. Amber's journey continues as she hangs on by a thread. Waking up in a hospital after going to deep is one thing. Losing your best friend, the relationship with her boyfriend and her newly learned about sister is quite another. Everything that Amber goes through is rough, not only on her but on everyone around her. She wants to seek help but doesn't know where to start much less who to turn to.

Landon doesn't know how to take Amber's cutting but then it's understandable with what he's going through at home. Casey on the other hand cannot seem to embrace Amber as family. This causes Amber pain and again she turns to cutting while she is trying to get professional help.

I think what bothers me about Amber's character is she can't quite get it through her head that the world doesn't revolve around her. Once she starts down the road to recovery everything has to be about her and if the slightest hint of someone's heartache or drama comes along she shuts it out quickly. This pushes everyone who's ever cared for her away for a time...

There were so many times I wanted to smack Amber and say "Hello, just because you are spiraling out of control doesn't mean you gotta push everyone that is there to help you away!" Then again I've never been in Amber's shoes... Just thinking about it makes me wonder if I wouldn't care about what those that are closest to me go through...

As the author brings it all to a close, things seem to come together for everyone. I enjoyed continuing Amber's journey and enjoyed seeing the steps she took down the road to recovery.

I finished reading The Overtaking a few days ago and in all honesty i did enjoy the book but not as much as Silenced.

The story follows Amber after she cut too deep and her story of what happens afterwards and keeps the reader gripped to see whether Amber will get her closure or not. I really did enjoy the book and i found all of the events that happened to provoke many emotions and keep it as one of the books that you can’t put down.

However, although i really did enjoy this book there are some aspects that i was not so keen on. I myself am not the most religious person and it felt like the book did a complete 180 from the first and for those who are more religious would enjoy it but for me it just seemed to head away from the subject of mental health and all about Jesus and how he will be a saviour. The other thing i was not so keen on was at the end of the book you never really find out what happened to Patrick and what he ended up doing with himself.

Other than these two points i really did enjoy the book and i am very glad i have read these books and i would recommend them to anyone who was looking for a good read.

I'm so glad Raebeth had the courage to write such a heartfelt story. There is a growing epidemic of teen depression, cutting and suicide. Many parents are not aware of what there teen is going through or if they do know they don't understand it.I understand the overwhelming feeling that comes from depression because I have dealt with it since middle school and now I have a bipolar teenager who has done cutting.

Amber was doing well fighting her addition to cut until she lost her best friend Sarah. Now the darkness is creeping in again and taking over.Landon tries to help but then starts to pull away.Amber must find in herself the strength to overcome this depression and cutting addition.

SILENCED 2:The Overtaking is a story of healing, forgiveness, overcoming those hings that seek to pull us down, and most of all it is story of HOPE!

I was given this book by the author in return for an honest review.

Having read the first book I was looking forward to reading this one.
I truly loved this book and loved following Amber's Story!
It cut rather close to the mark (no pun intended) as even now I self harm but not in the way of cutting.
I found this to be a very heartfelt, truthful account of suffering and recovery.
For the first 60-70% of the story had me in tears!!!
I am glad that Amber finally found her TRUE path!!!
I truly can't wait to see what comes next from this author!!!!

Silenced 2: The Overtaking
Silenced Series #2

A very emotional read that I’m sure will affect everyone is some way. Life is hard, and everyone has different coping mechanisms, but for Amber cutting is her only escape. The issues escalate in this book, until the secrets can no longer be kept in the dark. There is a religious aspect to this book, which I couldn’t relate to, but every other part made me think hard about how decisions impact other people. An intense, inspiring and emotional book that kept me turning page after page.

This is another powerful story. One that makes you understand how hard addictions can be.

The characters were amazing. I actually felt a connection with Amber and I could feel her emotions float off of each page as I continued to read the story.

The story-line was incredible. The author made me feel as if I was part of the story and left me in tears in certain parts of the story. I felt sadness, mad, heartbreak and God working throughout the many pages of this book. I highly recommend it.

Nope, too many punctuation errors and you're/your their/there mixups to keep reading without twitching in agony. Either the beta readers author thanked in the beginning don't really exist, or the "particular overbearing ways" alluded to include insisting on keeping these errors and the poor betas just folded under.

This book, for me as a reader was emotionally taxing and exhausting. Amber, our leading lady drove me nuts. The degree of her self involvement in the first half of this book was staggering and Landon. The long suffering boyfriend needed a medal in my opinion for sticking it out with her.

Even her parents is not spared her razor sharp tongue. I wanted to grab her by the shoulders and scream at her WAKE UP BUTTERCUP. Life gets far worse than this.

All the while during the first half of this book I was reading Ambers's story and having a mental conversation with every ex I ever had. I kept saying, boyo. You thought and told me I was high maintenance. You need to meet Amber. The scene of the funeral had me gaping. I mean you get rude then you get Amber. I was horrified and actually embarrassed on behalf of Amber.

Then at almost exactly the 50 % mark of the book Amber gets up and shapes up. This was the fun part.
Every time she relapsed I was basically screaming at her - come on girl. You can do it! Come on. Don't get sucked in by this slip up.
And Amber did not. It was not an easy journey for her but it was a fight worth fighting.

And like magic the Amber I was so disgusted with turned into a woman with not simply a nasty attitude masquerading as strength of character but a true lady with a purpose, a plan. A future. I adored this.

As for the writing. This author has grown so much since her debut novel I am in awe. No longer do you find that stop-and-go writing style of book I but instead you have a constant ebb and flow making the reading in general a much smoother experience. In this book far more characters gets introduced and the characters previously introduced in book one gets much more flesh added and the effect on the story line is immediate and impressive.

This book has more than only a few vital themes that makes it a must read. It explores the act of cutting as a coping mechanism in all its dark gruesome truth. The author never backs down, never glosses over it. Never makes it other than it is. Even the "accidental" overdose of a best friend is out for the world to see but not judge.

I think all mothers of YA daughters (and sons) should read this series before giving the copy to their children to read.

I still have a love hate relationship with Amber but now it is set against a new deep and profound sense of respect.

Note this is Christian lit so please, if Christian lit offends you be warned. This is not a "preachy" type of read but one of Truth and practical living as a saved human.

Silenced 2 The Overtaking is a young adult christian book. It is the second book in the Silenced series. In this book we pick up right where we left off with Amber the main character who is dealing with a lot in her life including the loss of her best friend. Howerver she has a secret that only her boyfriend knows, but she has begun loosing control of her emotions. Will she slip up and be found out? Is her secret safe? Will the pain ever end?

I really enjoyed this book. I read it from begining to end in around four hours. I just couldn't bring myself to put my kindle down until it was finished. I kept wanting to know what was going to happen next. I also really enjoyed the detail given to this book. This is truely some of the things that people go through with therapy. I think that this is a good read for parents as well as teens because it gives insight into mental illness and helps others to know that it is ok to get help with it. The only downside that I personally found with the book was that, for me, it was a little too preachy. However, as I have said earlier, I still really enjoyed it. I would reccomend this to any of my friends.

Silenced 2: The Overtaking by RaeBeth McGee-Buda is such an amazing story of hardship and recovery. It picks up right where Silenced left off and brings us to a hard earned HEA. This series contains some huge doses of reality and misdiagnosis. It must be so difficult to wander without direction. Well worth the read.

Amazing

I picked this rating because I read, silenced 1 and 2. I also had a thing with cutting 5 years I've been clean, and reading Amber's journey though it, helped me realize you should treasure everything in your life , including letting God help you.
