From the Nashville Next Generation series, comes your next book-boyfriend!
Dimitri Titov was on hockey skates before he could walk. All he’s ever wanted is to play for the Assassins, his dad’s team. After growing up in Russia, he’s back in Nashville, Tennessee, and ready to pursue his lifelong goal.
Austen McDavid escaped the kind of life they make Netflix documentaries about. But she has survived and is thriving in her new position, preparing to lead the Assassins’ farm team.
A housing mixup leads to a middle-of-the-night encounter so reminiscent of his parents’ relationship, Dimitri can’t help but wonder if it’s fate.
And when everyone is telling you not to go for it, sometimes you just have to line up the shot and let the pucks fly where they may.
My name is Toni aleo and I'm a #PredHead, #sherrio, #potterhead, and part of the #familybusiness!
I am also a wife to my amazing husband, mother of a wrestler and a gymnast, and also a fur momma to Phoebe, Gaston el Papillon & Winston.
You can usually find me hollering for the whole Nashville Predators since I'll never give my heart to one player again. When I'm not in the gym getting swole, I'm usually writing, trying to make my dreams a reality or being a taxi for my kids. I'm obsessed with Harry Potter, Supernatural, Disney and anything that sparkles! I'm pretty sure I was Belle in a past life and if I could be on any show it would be supernatural so I can hunt with Sam and Dean.
I loved being back in the Assassins world! Heavy Shot is about Dimitri Titov (Piper and Erik Titov's son) and Austen, who is a new character in this world.
Austen is shadowing Shelli to learn all about being the GM of a hockey team and Dimitri is back from Russia and wants to play for the Assassins. Austen and Dimitri's meeting was so funny and I liked the forced proximity in this one. Austen has a heavy past and I loved how caring Dimitri was when it came to that.
I enjoyed this one and I'm looking forward to when we eventually get Quinn and Emery's book!
Heavy Shot by Toni Aleo was the seventh book in the Nashville Assassins Next Generation series. The series was a spin-off of the original series and although both are enjoyable read in order, they can be read independently and as stand alone series.
Dimitri Titov was the son to Piper and Erik Titov (original series, book five, Blue Lines). After Dimitri’s father retired from the NHL, the family moved to Russia where he played hockey just like his father. After playing in the Russian League he was invited to the Nashville Assassins training camp. He had to prove himself but he was cocky, confident and talented.
Austin McDavid escaped from a cult where she now lived with her grandfather, who owned several hockey teams. As the owner of the new Assassin Farm team, Austin’s grandfather named her as the GM. To aid in her development, she was living and training Shelli Adler Brooks during training camp.
I enjoyed both the characters as well as the storyline. Their introduction, ongoing banter and friendship was humorous and fun. It was also emotional at times. Aleo also included several second generation support characters and I can’t wait to see where she takes them next.
I'm torn with this one. I loved Austen from the start, more so when I learned her past and how she was going to do this big job, even though she wasn't really into it. It seemed more as a thank you to her peepaw, that she even said yes to the job. Dimitri on the other hand turned me off right away, he came off as smarmy and slimy. I wanted more for Austen.
I found it interesting that as things came out with Austen and Dimitri, everyone feared Dimitri would hurt Austen and warned him off, which then only pissed off the both of them.
I will say that I was impressed during the contract signing! I didn't expect things to go the way they did on both ends, but liked that everyone stood up for what they believed in and wanted, even if it burned a bridge of two. That alone me me ok with the ending.
I like the Next Gen Assassins series. It's got the kids of the Assassins - and yeah, even the author sort of acknowledges that there's a *lot* of relationships between them. Shea and Elli had 5 kids - and have managed to get most of them paired off (although we have yet to see the end of story for Quinn and Emery - a story that is going to be so explosive if the glimpse of them in this novel is any indication.)
This time we get Dimitri Titov, son of Piper and Erik Titov (Blue Lines) and Austen McDavid. Austen is coming to the Assassin organization to understudy Shelli since her grandfather wants her to assume the GM duties at a new farm team being developed in Knoxville. Dimitri (with his family) has returned from playing in Russia to try out for the Assassins. Both Dimitri and Austen end up, through a bit of a slip-up, in the same player apartment and sparks fly. Their first encounter is absolutely hilarious - Austen takes a hockey stick to Dimitri (and his Xbox). They come to an uneasy truce - and the tension notches up, with ever cocky Dimitri teasing Austen. This was a fun and entertaining story. But there was a serious side as we find out more about Austen's traumatic childhood. If there's one thing that was a little too easy, it was this part of the story. Austen (and her sisters) have survived and escaped from an oppressive cult. The trauma - beatings and sexual abuse - was terrible and, while she has had therapy, I thought she would have more issues with trust and getting with Dimitri. However, it was sensitively done and didn't affect my enjoyment the overall story. Dimitri was so tender with her and their love story was super steamy. Their first time in an empty locker room was off the charts sexy. I just hope we'll get a few more glimpses of them in books to come.
Dimitri - the guy who got into Shelli's pants when he was on vacation in the US (and left out the part that it was only for a vacation and not permanently) - is back. Shelli still hates him (you go, woman). And Dimitri? Meets all the beautiful and sexy and attractive women in the close-knit Assassins family circle. And boy, does he still comment on all of their appearances. Blech.
Plus, he doesn't deserve the heroine. After all she has been through, I think, she would have deserved someone sweet and caring and not this man commenting on her nipples. She calls it disgusting and gosh, I agree 100%. He gives me the ick. And he is just not for her... and then he embarrasses her AT WORK. And that was such a lot blow...
Hero: 1/5
The thing is... I like the heroine. Austen is sassy. She fights back, doesn't back down easily and tells him what bothers her. Lol, ofc, he only gets off on her praising him too and he doesn't think twice about the hurt she felt. Argh
Heavy Shot is the latest addition to Nashville Assassins: Next Generation Series. Just like Assassins, I am in love with the next generation. It is amazing to see all the hotshots dealing with their kids’ marriages and becoming grandparents and the new gen is giving them a run for their money :) Till now we mostly saw the Adler and Brooks clans but slowly we are getting to the other members of the Assassins family starting with Titovs.
Being born into the Assassins family, Dimitri Titov always dreamed about being part of the team and following his father’s and uncle’s footsteps. It just took him a bit longer than expected since he followed his family to Russia and played there for a while. I wasn’t sure what to feel about Dimitri after how Shelli reacted to the news about him joining the camp but Elli still being at the helm of the Assassins and as always family comes first for her, she got what she wanted. Now Dimitri got his shot to become part of the team and he is dedicated to making it. Even though Shelli is against him being on the team, Dmitri has amazing support in and out of the team. Elli, Posey, and River do their best to support him and he is super lucky because his cousin Flynn is also trying out for the team. Elli even arranges for him an apartment where he can stay alone and focus on hockey. Even though Dmitri has an amazing relationship with his family, he is happy that he will be living alone. At least that is what he is thinking until getting attacked with a hockey stick in the middle of the night by a beautiful intruder, Austen McDavid. Austen didn’t have the easiest upbringing. Thanks to her mom, she and her sisters grew up in a cult. Five years ago, Austen managed to run away and made sure her sisters followed shortly after. Now she and her sisters are with their grandfather, who is one of the richest and most influential people in Nashville. Her grandfather is planning to build a hockey team, which will be the Assassins farm team and Austen will be the GM, that is why for the whole year she will be shadowing Shelli. Austen was not expecting how welcoming, friendly, and accommodating the Assassins family is. So, when Shelli offered her the empty apartment so that she doesn’t need to drive back and forth, she agreed to take the apartment. She and everyone else thought that she will be living alone until she came across her new roommate in the middle of the night, attacking him with a hockey stick and destroying his Xbox in the process. OMG! It was hilarious to see that just like his father, Dimitri also manage to turn on the Xbox destruction mode. It took me back to the Blue Lines and reminded me of Phillip’s safety measures for Xbox destruction mode. It was super cute to watch banter between Dimitri and Austen. Dimitri was a bit annoying at first but slowly he started to show his true self which was sweet, loyal, and protective. I loved how he reacted to Austen. What I didn’t like was how Erik and Austen’s grandfather reacted. Austen’s grandfather – I really don’t care but the way Erik behaved was disappointing.
All in all, Dimitri and Austen’s story is everything you want in a romance; sexy, sweet, and amazingly perfect.
Also, HOLLY MOLLY what is going on with Quinn and Emery? Oh my heart, be still… I felt horrible for Quinn and yes Emery can definitely be a serial killer. I hope we will get the chance to read their story soon because after this book I am super curious.
• Would I recommend this book: Yes • Would I re-read this book: Done that already :) • Would I read future books by this author: Yes
Heavy Shot is the newest in the Nashville Assassins: Next Generation series. While this couple was a loveable surprise, it was great to read about so many characters we've "watched" grow up. I really enjoyed the storyline.
I kind of forgot about Dimitri since he was far away in Russia. I loved how family centered he was and there were many references to his relationship with his grandparents. When his sister finally gets her book, watch out. She could be Emory Brooks 2.0, but with Mafia ties? Fingers crossed.
I appreciated Austen's backstory because it is one that I haven't read much about. The way that she and her sisters overcame their childhood trauma was appreciated. I loved that they lived their lives the way they wanted to live them when they became free.
Dimitri and Austen together were amazing. They were great family people, built solid friendships, and were willing to step away from their dreams in order to be with one another. Another solid performance by Toni. Keep fighting girl, you amaze me EVERY DAY!
I am loving these next gen assassins kids growing up! Seeing Dimitri Titov saunter back onto the landscape as a cocky, determined player was all the things I didn’t realize I needed. Truly I didn’t see this story coming and it gave me all the feels!
Dimitri is all the things good about Piper & Erik, with his dad’s cocksure attitude thrown in. Coming back to Nashville to land a spot on the Assassins is the goal, but he’s got to prove himself to a few folks first. Austen McDavid is the exact opposite of Dimitri in every way, having been thrown into this hockey world she knows almost nothing about. Add in the fact that she’s still trying to figure out how to deal with the fact her past can make her an anxious mess at times. The last thing either of these two expect are each other or the fire that comes whenever they are around each other.
I loved the unexpectedness of this story. The opposites attract, forced proximity and falling into a friendship aspects of it all. There were Easter eggs at times, hello destroyed Xbox. There was drama galore, meddling families and trauma issues. But at the center was adoration, support, encouragement and so much flirting and passion! Throw in Dimitri’s dirty mouth along with his swoony endearments….sigh, sakhar.
Yeah I was so happy to be back in Toni’s writing again. Just a fantastic story and so well done from start to finish.
Oh my goodness!!!! I absolutely devoured this book!! Dimitri is everything and then some! He's a little cocky and sure of himself but also very loyal and genuine. But once he's hit with the love bug, we get a more vulnerable side but with all the other personality traits. And all wrapped into one character makes for a fantastic book boyfriend. And then we have Austen who is just as fantastic! She's had a rough life but is so strong and is moving on. Yet she still has some learning to do. And after meeting Dimitri, everything falls into place. She's a great heroine and perfectly compliments Dimitri. This storyline was a page turner and there were some fantastic emotional moments. I couldn't put this down and neither will you!!
I have to be honest. I dnf’d this book, but it’s still getting a rating because I was that turned off by it.
I liked Erik and Piper’s book and now I wish I could erase what I know of them in the future, just to go back to when I didn’t know their children.
It’s not that Dimitri was that horrible of a person, but he was not giving anything except annoying side character vibes for me and Austen was an amalgam of so many other lead females these days. I think maybe Toni Aleo just needs to try something else for a while, I mean how many times can you write the same things without needing to get weird in order to keep it fresh? While I’m at it, how many times in over 30 books or however many, do we have to mention Elli and her husband (whatever his name is)? They are so shoved in your face in every book, I’m just over it. I’ll give her some credit for doing the hockey romance thing before it was cool.. but, just no.
Dimitri is a guy who apparently doesn’t play well enough for the US teams, struggles with his weight, has a mustache, is missing 2 front teeth, sleeps around, and wears HeyDudes. Like if I could create a nightmare of a MMC this would be a great start. It grinds the gills to say that because I loved his dad, but it’s the truth. And what was that drama with Shelli? She’s already with someone else, get over it. Probably just a way to weave in more about her royal family of the series. The whole cult background for the FMC just felt like reaching too hard to give her an identity and a reason, and let’s not forget that I can’t stand his sister. “She just hates America..” ok, then bye. 👋 Go back.
All of her books are becoming just a cult classic for those who love the Adlers and follow them. I usually like legacy books, but omg, this was just bad. Come at me. 🤷🏼♀️
I usually love Toni Aleo's books but this was not good.
The whole cult thing just didn't work. The girls were all born in the cult and couldn't leave, they didn't know the grandfather so that didn't make sense. Yet the grandfather was a tobacco farmer and now a hugely influential hockey team owner? So why didn't he get the girls out? And why did no one shut it down?
The horrific abuse was made light of. Five girls sexually tortured for years yet they all seem to have come out with limited trauma and four of them with healthy sex lives.
The endless Adler drama was so dull. Dimitri grew up in Russia yet acted like he'd been with all the Adlers and associated cast his whole life. Despite having read a lot of these books I lost who was with who least of all who was the kid of who.
Dimitri was just not very likeable. At all. His endless descriptions of how beautiful all the women were was so unnecessary. He was just yuk.
Austen had potential but because I couldn't believe her cult background I just didn't warm to her.
Dimitri is descended from Assassins history with his father playing for them, now Dimitri wants to join the iconic team which means moving the family from Russian back to the United States. All though he loves his family when it is suggested he stay within the players apartments he jumps at the chance to relax on his own and think about hockey.
Austen has been sent by her grandfather to shadow the GM Shellie at the Assassins so she can gain the knowledge and confidence to run the farm team her grandfather has just purchased. Austen is really enjoying her first day when a conversation between her and Shellie has the GM offering her a place in the Players Apartments save going back and forwards while she is shadowing. Austen is thrilled and once settled into the apartment, although one night when a stranger breaks in and she attacks him and his xbox the realisation that the apartment has been doubled booked starts to make sense.
As the story goes on Austen and Dimitri start to have a flow of living together and thus there relationship grows move and they start having feelings for each other. Can Austen overcome her past and can Dimitri prove he is worth his spot in the team.
I loved this story and although I have read some of the series but not all it can also be read as a stand alone book. I loved the interaction of the two main characters and the differences in there backgrounds added a depth to both characters. Austen's character was heart breaking to read about her background and history but the way the soft side of Dimitri came over was lovely to read and be a part of.
The story is well written and flows beautifully through the ups and downs of these two brilliant characters, the chemistry which jumps off the page enhances the story and drives you along to read what will happen next. I can wait to go back and read some of the stories I have missed and look forward to the next boo in the series.
This was some top shelf Toni Aleo. Not the very top shelf. Like the second below. But good stuff. Really enjoyed it. Definitely a five star knock out. I was thoroughly entertained the whole way through. We had a one hundred percent sweetheart guy and an extremely likable gal. Story was interesting. Ending was super satisfying.
A fitting end to the series when it started out so, so rocky with Aiden Brooks. If you like sweethearts, you're in for a nice time. Dimitri is portrayed as a "playa" back in Russia, but his behavior during the entire story says otherwise. Austen had a super interesting back story, and I'm so glad things worked out the way they did. I felt like she went from one form of control right into another, just one that was less physically harmful. Good stuff.
I suppose I'm onto the next series? Is there another series I haven't read? I dunno. I'll figure something out.
It's been a while since we got a new story from Toni about her beloved Assassins and this was definitely worth the wait. I did a re-read of Blue Lines (Erik and Piper's story) before jumping into their son Dmitri's story and I am so glad I did. I had forgotten what a BOSS Piper was and what a JERK Erik was and I was excited to see how Dmitri would turn out. Swoony, that's how he turned out. He's got all the confidence of his dad and all the heart of his mother. Side note, although he had a couple of moments, Erik grew up to be the loving dad we all knew he could be. But enough about the OG parents, let's get to Dmitri and Austen! Dmitri has been playing in Russia but now has the chance to try out for the Assassins, the team he has always dreamed of playing for. Austen is slated to be the GM of the Assassin's new farm team and is going to be spending time with Shelli (Adler) Brooks to learn the business and the job. Through a misunderstanding, both Dmitri and Austen are assigned to stay in the same apartment provided by the team. Their first meeting was unforgettable and so appropriate! From the start, these two are drawn to each other yet Austen is so closed off and is denying her feelings. Dmitri has no problem letting her know how he feels and flirts constantly. When these two finally come together, it is with all the steam and heat you would expect from an Assassin and Toni Aleo. What I really loved about this story was not just the great banter, but Dmitri's patience and love with Austen. She grew up in a cult that was patriarchal and misogynistic but she came out as a strong woman who knows what she wants and once she decides it's definitely Dmitri, she is all in. Glimpses of all our favorite Assassins, Ice Cats and Bullies are just the cherry on top of yet ANOTHER masterpiece from Toni.
Heavy Shot is Book 7 in the Nashville Assassins: Next Generation series by Toni Aleo, featuring a steamy and emotional roommates to lovers story for Dimitri Titov and Austen McDavid. Austen escaped an oppressive and abusive cult and is on track to start a new life as the GM of the Assassins’ new farm team when a housing mix-up lands her face-to-face with the hot, larger than life hockey player back from Russia and ready to vie for a spot on his dad’s old team. Their meeting is the stuff love stories are made of😂, and enough to flip a switch for Dimitri. Can he overcome her insecurities and outside influences in order to see if they are truly meant to be?
I’m always excited to return to the Nashville Assassins world, and this book did not disappoint! Austen’s past was heartbreaking and the authentic emotions associated with her trauma were handled well. Dimitri’s growth as a man surprised me as he fell so quickly for her. I laughed at their banter, blushed over his dirty mouth and all the steam they worked up when they finally got there, and I swooned when he showed his romance game! For me, this series is always about the larger cast and how everyone interacts with each other, and the bonds that they all have. That camaraderie and family vibe brings drama, banter, love, and so much entertainment! I cannot wait to see what happens with Emery and Quinn! Poor Quinn! Loving her would be like trying to harness a tornado! I am definitely here for whatever comes for this series!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love sports romance and I absolutely loved this story of Dimitri and Austin so much..I could not get enough and devoured every page. The author gave me all that I love....hockey, angst, banter, loyalty, secrets and hot and heavy moments.
All Dimitri Titov wants is to make his dad proud and play for the Assassins Hockey Team. Dimitri had to fight his way back after having detours thrown in his way....trying now to make it.....never expecting to have a glitch in the new housing set up for him during training camp, Dimitri ends up having to share his apartment with Austen McDavid.
Austen McDavid is trying to move on with her life, after being a survivor of the unthinkable and trying to find her own way in life. Austen wants make her grandfather proud and learning the ropes on how to be a successful general manager of a new and upcoming hockey team...so she is shadowing another farm team to get more experience with the Assassins Hockey Team. What Austen did not expect was to have to share her apartment with Dimitri....but in light of everything...they try to make it work....even though Dimitri drives Austen crazy at times...
Friendly banter between Austen and Dimitri that leads into feelings....will Austen and Dimitri get their HEA when so many people are against their relationship believing it is for the greater gain for Dimitri to make the team and protect Austen from her past? Or will Dimitri and Austen stay loyal to each other and prove their love...
This is a fantastic story!! I loved every moment...and definitely am wanting to read more of this series.
“Especially when he is a Russian fox like Dimitri Titov”
Dimitri has come home, after living in Russia for years it was time to come play for his home team, his Dad’s team. He should be a shoo in as a legacy player but old wounds made from prideful decisions and grudges held for way too long put his spot in jeopardy. Austen thought she had fully escaped her past, she found her grandpa and helped her sisters escape the abusive brainwashing cult they were raised in. She thought her mind and body were free until she met Dimitri and realized there is still healing that is needed. After a housing misunderstanding Austen is learning that not all men are evil and want to control her. Dimitri learns that hard work on and off the ice helps fulfill his life and Hockey isn’t the only thing that matters. These two meet in a crash of emotions involving a hockey stick and an XBox. They learn respect and boundaries and meet in the middle with their undeniable connection and fight for each other above everything else.
Austen was such a strong heroine in so many ways and showing her vulnerability to her family and standing up for what she not only wanted but needed in the end was a great addition to the book. Dimitri stole my heart a long time ago when he was in his mother and fathers story and I enjoyed the family elements this story brought into play as I take pleasure in seeing glimpses of past characters from the Assassins series’. This is another great addition to the Next generation Assassins and I cannot wait to see what comes next.
Heavy Shot is Toni’s comeback? Nahhh can’t really call it a comeback when she never went anywhere. But it is her first book in a while and therefore there’s a clamoring from her readers for this book and the question is… was it worth the wait?
The answer to that is yes! Heavy shot is like a long awaited returning to home for Toni’s readers. The characters were fresh and while you see the crazy ride looming on the horizon (emery and Quinn) they all took a back seat to Dimitri and Austen’s wild love ride. Toni gave us fresh dynamics to characters we’ve known for a while and Toni if you’re reading this….. I NEED more Elli v. Fallon respectfully of course cause I’m still here for them being friends in the end. Also while I know Erik means well he’s kinda a dick.
Austen’s lived and escaped the worst hell one can imagine and she has no plans on ever going back. She’s determined to move forward and live her life and part of that process is helping her grandfather open a farm team for the Nashville assassins. What it doesn’t include? Being accidentally shacked up with a Nashville assassin hopeful.
All Dimitri’s ever wanted is to play for the Nashville Assassins, the team his father played for. Now that it’s within arms reach the last thing he needs is to be sidetracked by the beauty who’s his accidental roomie. But love doesn’t just wait on the bench waiting to be called on when it’s 3rd lines turn.
Austen and Dimitri will have to work not only against outside forces to make their relationship work but also from those closest to them.
loved this book highly recommend! Austen is my hero…
Wow.. she did it again!!! Toni Aleo, wrote another immensely heart felt happily ever after hockey romance.
Austen and Dimitri are wonderfully written characters. Their sparring moments had me laughing so hard.
Austen is a warrior who has fought her way back from a life of abuse, neglect and overall horrific lifestyle. She’s learning to stand tall and walk her own path, wanting nothing more than to make her grandfather proud and to watch over her sisters. As the new GM of Knoxville Bears, she’s taking pointer from non other than Shelli Adler Brooks!! I love how she also isn’t afraid to give a few pointers as well! She’s just an amazing character. She’s funny, rebellious and not afraid to say what’s on her mind.
The Russian Stallion “Dimitri” is just someone I want to meet in real life..I’m I want a man who will read my naughty books and flirt with me!! Who wouldn’t.. Dimitri is the perfect man for Austen, he’s the perfect sparring partner, jokester and all round good guy! He treats her the way she never imagined or could have imagined being treated.
This book will definitely be on my repeat playlist because I just couldn’t get enough of these two…
You’ll also love Austen sisters.. they are tough as nails and funny and I also can’t wait for Quinn and Emery’s story because their passion is intense. So many good parts to this book!! I’ve recommended this book to my daughters and my sisters already, so good!
Toni Aleo and the Assassins were my first ever hockey romance series and they will always be one of my favorites in my book loving heart. “Heavy Shot” is a fun, sweet and heartfelt addition to the Assassins series and I loved Dimitri and Austen’s story.
Dimitri Titov is back home in Nashville after playing hockey in Russian and he is determined to play on the Nashville Assassins like his father did when he was younger. What he wasn’t counting on was having a roommate who attacks him with a hockey stick when he comes back to his apartment. But to be fair, Austen was thinking that she was living alone. Austen is shadowing Shelli as she’ll be the GM for the Assassins new AHL team. The two are complete opposites but as they spend time together, an attraction forms that neither was expecting.
I’m so happy that Toni Aleo is back with more from the Assassins. I love the next generation series because we get to catch up with the OGs and also have new stories that involve all of their kids who are now adults. Dimitri is confident and has the same swagger that his Dad has when he was younger. But he’s also patient and kind like his Mom, so he’s the perfect mix of them both. Austen was such a nice surprise and I loved getting to know her. Her past was difficult but she worked hard to get past it and have a thriving life. These two had amazing banter and I found myself laughing often as they first interacted. Dimitri was incredibly patient with Austen and I loved that he fell first. He was a true romantic and I loved their happy ever after.
Holy Moly I freaking loved Dimitri and Austen's story. Both have very interesting backstories. Austen's story will bring you to tears. Dimitri's story will remind you that family comes first.
An error in communication brings them together as roommates. I had a feeling the author would have me laughing. I didn't realize that I would laugh so hard and loud. Dimitri is an absolute hoot. He is the best medicine for Austen.
Things get awkward really quickly. Dimitri is trying to secure a position with the Assassins. Austen is shadowing Shelli, the Assassin's GM. She is there to learn what she can before becoming GM of a farm team owned by her Grandfather. I won't say the world was against them as a couple, but there are many opinionated people. They aren't nice about it. I was very disappointed in a couple of them. Yes, I know they are only characters, but Toni Aleo's words bring them to life.
Weeks and weeks of training lead up to one single moment. Dimitri's fate is to be decided in an instant. Some people just aren't nice. Some people think they can control what they shouldn't. Dimitri is backed up against a wall. I could not believe what was happening.
Dimitri knows how to make a statement. Dimitri knows how to fight for what he wants. Words are the most powerful weapon. Toni Aleo wields them with power and determination making me what to stand up and cheer.
I can't wait to see what the next book entails. I am ready and waiting for the next emotional read.
When I got this book I didn't even realize that it was book 7, but it totally didn't matter! You can read this as a stand alone, but honestly I can't wait to read the others to the set!! This one was so good!! I haven't read any sport romances before and I am glad that I gave it a shot. I was able to understand what the author was talking about and I ended up really enjoying the book. Dimitri loves hockey. It's his life long career and his goal has always been to play for the Assassins. So picking up his mom, dad, and sister they all move from Russia to Tennessee! But just because his family came with doesn't mean he wants to live with them. He stays in the players rooms instead. After a long day of practice, working out, meetings, and seeing old friends he's ready to crazy. Unfortunately there is a tiny problem. Austen. She's escaped a horrible abusive past and can't wait to lead the farm team for the Assassins. She doesn't want people making decisions for her and she wants to thrive in her new life and career. Only issue is Dimitri. Both Dimitri and Austen are given the same room. A mix up with last minute changes and not enough communication. Thinking Dimitri is an intruder, Austen loses it. Let's just say that their first meeting leaves some marks. Boy oh boy do you need to read this book! It is funny and sad and you will just get sucked right in! Sports Romance for the win!
Heavy Shot is Book Seven of the Nashville Assassins: Next Generation series. This is a sports romance book that centers around the characters of Austen and Dimitri. Austen has had a rough life full of abuse and neglect. She has learned to be strong and wants to make her grandfather proud, so she takes a job with the Assassins. Dimitri is back from playing hockey in Russia and comes to try out for the Assassins team. When a mix-up with housing occurs Dimitri and Austen end up in the same apartment. Although at first the two do not necessarily hit it off they eventually reach a truce. The witty banter, teasing, and chemistry between them builds as they get to know one another better.
This was a well written book with an engaging storyline and lovable characters. Austen has had a horrific past full of abuse and trauma but has not let that deter her from having a bright future. She learned to be strong, assertive, feisty and stand on her own two feet. Dimitri comes across as being cocky and arrogant initially but as the story unfolds, we see another side of him. He is sweet, kind, and gentle with Austen which was wonderful to read. The author did a beautiful job of writing about sensitive subject matter and the after effects a survivor of abuse experiences. The love story between Austen and Dimitri was inspiring. A wonderful story full of angst, witty banter, humor, hope, love, passion, and romance. I highly recommend this book!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Toni Aleo is one of my favorite authors so I was very excited to read one of her books since I hadn’t gotten a chance to in awhile. This time I read Heavy Shot which is the 7th book in the Nashville Assassins Next Generation series.
About the book: This book is about Austen, a women who has escaped a cult and is now shadowing the Assassin’s GM as she learns the business to become the GM for one of their farm teams. From her first day on the job, Austen hears about Dimitri Titov, a former player’s son who is coming back to the states from Russia to try to fulfill his dream to play on the team. Shelli, the GM of the Assassins, doesn’t want Dimitri on the team due to personal history but her mother, the owner, wants to give him a chance. Austen and Dimitri meet and sparks fly. Will Austen and Dimitri be able to find a way to be together and also get all they want?
My review: Loved it. It held my attention and the storyline was cute. I’m not quite sure how the two characters went from hating each other to loving each other so quickly but maybe that happens in real life? Also not sure how his parents were ok with them getting engaged so quickly. Because of these things, I gave it 4 stars.
Getting lost in a Toni Aleo book about the Assassins always feels like coming home and spending time with some crazy family that you can’t help but love, and Heavy Shot was no different!
One of my favorite things about Toni’s characters is how they are always far from perfect and deal with some serious issues, but we get to see them fight through whatever it is to their HEA. In Austen’s case, she has a unique problem in that she escapes from an abusive cult. She is so strong, and I love how she ends up having no issues standing up for herself in the end. Dimitri wasn’t entirely likable at first, but he falls hard and fast for Austen and we see the best side of him come out. I love how he really has to work on himself to make the team, and I think that really played a part in making him exactly the kind of man Austen needed.
There is a lot of hockey outside of the romance, and some slow burn steam with laughs and a little tears. I actually went back and re-read some of Dimitri’s parents story, as I’ve found myself doing after each of the next generation books. I’m already in my feels about Emery and Quinn’s story and might need a little more time before I’m ready for them. This book can be read as a standalone but I definitely recommend diving in and binging every Assassins book you can!
This is the next book in the Nashville Assassins Next Generations series. I am so happy that Aleo decided to continue the series. This is Piper and Erik Titov’s (Blue Lines) son.
Austen McDavid is the heroine of the story. She has lived a sheltered yet incredibly traumatic life. After saving herself, and by extension her sisters, she joins the Assassins family as the future GM of the new farm team. She wants to learn more about hockey under Shelli Adler’s wing and quickly proves herself as a smart, dedicated worker.
The only snag in Austen’s plan is her unexpected roommate, Dimitri Titov. Dimitri has returned to America from Russia to fulfill his dream of playing for the Assassins. He has a reputation and needs to improve his sills if is going to make the team. He cannot afford to have any distractions. However, he soon finds that one woman could be worth risking it all.
Aleo often brings mental health into her stories and does so again with Heavy Shot. She allows Austen to explore what it actually means to love and be loved while showing Dimitri the importance of thinking of others before himself. I enjoyed Dimitri and Austen’s story but did notice that some storylines have been drug along for quite some time. I hope that some of these will have resolution in the next story.
After moving with his family to Russia and playing in the Russian leave, Dimitri and the Tito’s family is ready to come back to Nashville and Elli swiped him up to be an Assassins. He has things to work on the make the roster but he is willing to put on the time and effort to do so while lying low. What he doesn’t plan for to be sharing an apartment with the hottie GM of the Farm Team.
Austen is named the new GM as the Assassins Fram Team and who better to learn under and from but the Adler women. Austen is fierce and strong and IMO, the perfect woman for the job. While under training she falls for Dimitri. Being a woman who has escaped a cult, has some trauma that she has been working through for the past five years but is still struggling and letting it hold her back.
Dimitri and Austen are opposites but have fallen for each other even though both careers are on the line. I found Dimitri hilarious and charming and in such control with Austen I wanted to give him a gold medal for it. When they finally get together, I love how Dimitri wants to be out and proud and not hide. Once the tension between these too went off…. IT! WENT! OFF!!
While we follow along Dimitri and Austen, we get a little insight to Emery and Quinn and let me tell you…. I am so very excited to see more of their story. As the Assassin are one big family, we get the past character who pop up in this story! I enjoyed this book so much and cannot wait for more.
