The Greenhouse Gardener's Manual

Rate this book

Imagine biting into a fresh, juicy tomato straight from the vine in the middle of winter. Or growing a huge collection of succulents and cacti in even the coldest parts of the world. Or relaxing, mid-snowstorm, in a warm room packed with colorful and fragrant flowers, like orchids, fuchsias, and paperwhites. These are just a few of the benefits a home greenhouse can offer.

In The Greenhouse Gardener’s Manual, Roger Marshall provides you with every tool and technique you need to successfully grow edibles and ornamentals in a well-maintained greenhouse. You will learn how to choose the right greenhouse, how to create a healthy greenhouse environment, how to start seeds and propagate, and how to maintain your greenhouse. Marshall also offers plant profiles with complete growing information for hundreds of edible and ornamental plants.

Greenhouses offer gardeners a way to extend their growing season, a chance to increase their plant palette beyond the limits of their region, and a place of refuge. And with The Greenhouse Gardener’s Manual in hand, you can finally do it all with confidence!

I read this book for some inspiration and guidance for building our own greenhouse. Admittedly, I skipped over many sections that weren’t relevant to me, as I was looking more for aesthetic and layout ideas. We are just building something small and imperfect, and this book seemed targeted to more serious ameuter gardeners who will be devoting much more time and money to their greenhouses than we will be. Nevertheless, as I was someone who knew next to nothing about greenhouse gardening, I picked up a few helpful tips related to plant care from this book that I will definitely be implementing as we get started with this project. I also realized after I read this, that Roger Marshall has another book about to greenhouse design , which I certainly plan to read!

This is a very informative book. I won't be able to get a greenhouse for many many years but it has become something of a dream of mine. This book lays out the information in a very easy to understand way and also lists out a variety of plants that you can grow in one. I had no idea you could grow so many tropical plants in a greenhouse. The energy bills would probably be nuts but I mean you could do it.

Anyway would recommend if you're just beginning to read up on greenhouses like i am.

Practical guidance and instruction, particularly for a Northeast gardener such as myself surviving the New England winters and summers, as the author Roger Marshall lives overlooking Block Island Sound, Rhode Island! Great informative stories/blogs on Hartley Botanic Greenhouse Magazine web site as well, very timely and useful news, tips, advice to which Roger contributes. Highly recommend this manual for the Greenhouse gardener at any level of experience.

I thought this book did a great job of laying out information about types of greenhouses and the various materials used to create an energy efficient structure. Other sections were helpful, but I felt this was the most useful part of the book.

Great info, well laid out. Would make a great reference manual, I'm not quite there yet and still mulling over what type of greenhouse if any would work for me.

Briefly covers a broad range of topics, doesn't go deep on many of them. Would have appreciated more focus on cool/cold greenhouses.

Very Informative! There was some stuff I knew already and skipped but a bunch of stuff that was helpful still despite all the books I have read on gardening. :)
