Barely Surviving

“He was captivating, scorching hot and wickedly tempting. The epitome of power and strength encased in the body of an angel and he had possessed me. Need for him coursed through my veins white hot and I had been incomprehensively burned”

Our connection had been instant, intense and all consuming, seriously unexplainable to most, but crystal clear to us.

Jonah Jacobson was the summation of all my fears, nightmares and smouldering deep desire. After living a life that knew only pain, violence and fear inflicted by successful, power driven men, everything he signified should have repelled me but it didn’t.

The driving force of our bodies needing to merge was immediate from the day he walked into my life. I was beyond wealthy, heiress to millions, but inside I was a numb, empty shell that he saw. He saw what lay within, the poison that runs through my veins. He saw the real me. And still he wanted me anyway.

But I also had secrets. Secrets I believed, if they were to be released, would shatter both our lives and destroy the tangible pulse of vibrant male sexuality the other half of my soul required to live.
Jonah had his own torment to bear, his own tragedies and heartbreak to carry. Both tired of barely surviving, my biggest fear was if our secrets were to be unleashed and truths were told, the lifeline he gave me would break and so would my heart, Forever.

Ava has a horrific upbringing. It’s so bad she jumps to a different continent. As the years go by, she stays to herself, with the exception of roommate, Charlotte. Something back home in the U.S. happens that requires counsel from a lawyer and that is where she meets, Jonah.

The book begins with a jarring scene. Major trigger warning here. I was interested to see how the author would use something like this and I was disappointed. IMO, something this horrific, this tragic needs a purpose and there wasn’t one. The story would have been exactly the same if the author went with something a few notches below that awful event.

Then there was the uncomfortable scene where Ava sees Jonah for the first time in a room full of lawyers. I understand the author was trying to build an uncontrollable desire between the MCs, but this felt forced and unrealistic. Below is a snippet of Ava’s reaction to Jonah at seeing him for the first time, with other lawyers in the room:

Attraction slammed through me hard, aggressive and instantaneous making my groin burn and sex clench to the point of edging on painful. My now racing pulse kicked up a gear and my chest tightened as rampaging hunger surged through me. Breathing became laboured, my lungs burning as they screamed for oxygen. The urge to fuck slammed into my core; the wetness at the apex of my thighs heightened the need I felt. Two sweaty palms planted onto the table top, supporting my body as it bowed under the intensity. My clit grew hot and greedy, my nipples hard and swollen. Closing my eyes, vibrations of…

Also, there were just other things that I didn’t care for like

his semen flooding through the denim and over my groin.
Really? Was that necessary?!

This ended on a cliffy, but I don’t have any intentions on reading the 2nd book.

Ava is barely surviving through her life as she tries to move on from that horrific night when things for her will never be the same again. She survived physically but emotionally she is shut down. She has no need for emotions, especially love. Why would she, no one has ever showed her what love should be. For her, it made her life a living hell. All she has known is pain in one form or the other. She can be a major bitch, her secrets have made her be this way. When she meets Jonah, the attraction between them is instant. Too bad she can’t and won’t act on it, he the type of man that can cause her so much more pain, but can she really fight him for long?

Jonah is handsome, successful, dominating and the person who is handling the matter that brought Ava to his office in the first place. Jonah wants Ava, he pursues her and is relentless until she gives in. There is something about Jonah, he has his own secrets. He loves Ava, or is there more to his attraction? When Jonah’s secrets are revealed they have the power to destroy everything he has with Ava.

The pain that Ava was going through I could never imagine. She survived something so vile that it is understandable why she is the way she is. She needed to have the hard walls up around herself to protect her. When she finally allows those walls to crumble with Jonah I was so happy, well that was until Jonah’s secret came out and he royally screwed things up.

Jonah, holy hot damn. This man is sex himself. He craves Ava and can’t get enough of her. He has his secrets but deep down he is a good guy. He in his own way is barely surviving, just as Ava is. I wanted him to win Ava and make her see that love can heal and that what he felt was true. I wanted a Jonah for myself, well that was until his secrets are revealed and I swear I screamed out “you are an asshole how could you” and threw my kindle, only to pick it right backup to see what was going to happen next.

The ending, holy shit can you say cliffhanger? I want to know what happens right freaking now! Now! Now! Now!

I felt so many emotions while reading Barely Surviving. I cried one minute, was pissed off the next, my heart was breaking and my stomach was in knots. I was enthralled from the prologue and could not put my kindle down. It is not easy to read at times, it’s painful and heartbreaking. It makes you want to start living your life and not let the past break you.

I'm tired of just surviving sweetheart, it's time to start living – Jonah

Courtney Cross has made me an instant fan of hers. I want the second book, Divinely Living, to come out right this second so that I can continue on the rollercoaster ride of emotions that Barely Surviving has brought me on. Please put this on your TBR lists as it will not disappoint, that I can promise you.

I was so overwhelmed by this book – it was one of the best that I have read! I only hope that this review can do it justice! First, the writing was lyrical, poetic, and a joy to read. The prologue allows us to view the aftermath of the brutal attack of 18 year old Savannah Mae Matthews (Ava) by her stepfather Alex. As a result of this attack and her life experiences, she attempts suicide. Chapter 1 begins with her life, four years after her failed attempt. After being summoned to the law offices of Jacobson and Fitzgerald, Ava learns that her stepfather has passed away and she stands to inherit not only his substantial fortune, but also his businesses. One of the lawyers (solicitors) at this meeting is Jonah Jacobson, a beautiful man for which she feels an overwhelming, all encompassing, attraction. This is the story of their relationship.
I was overwhelmed at the raw “honestly” of their relationship. The physical aspects were steamy, raw, touching – amazing – and Ms. Cross has a way with words! Johan’s openness and desire to make the relationship “more” was beautiful – I didn’t understand his instant “need” for Ava, but light was shed on that at the end of the book. Ava’s struggle to get close to someone, especially a man who, on the surface, emulated her stepfather, was real and honest. I truly believed that they would make it – however, I knew that a wrench needed to be thrown in their life (or else it would not be an interesting book). I was overwhelmed. I cried. I hurt for them both. I can not wait for part II - Divinely Living!

Intense, emotional read. Ava's childhood was far from perfect, ending in the worst possible way on her 18th birthday. Escaping from the brutality of her step father she leaves the states to go to London. Four years later emotionally closed off and surviving day to day things come to a head for her when the lawyers come out and inform her of Alex's, her step father, death. Tied in with the god-like man in charge of helping her with her estate, Ava is at a loss for what to do with her inheritance, as well as her attraction to Jonah. Emotions run high between the two causeing Ava to reevaluate herself for the first time ever. But secrets and lies come out causing her to question everything shes come to know about the man she has fallen in love with.

Amazing story I loved the explosive attraction between Ava and Jonah. Can't wait to read more from Cross and look foward to the sequel to this novel.

This book captivated me from the 1st page. This writing style is excellent and a joy to read. I truly couldn't out it down.

Ava is a fighter. Struggling to 'live' after a hard childhood she is shocked to find herself completely in lust with the forthright, demanding and hotter than lava, Jonah.

Jonah is hotter than hot. Powerful, dominating, demanding. When he wants, he gets, and he wants Ava.

He encapsulates her, as much as she tries to fight it, until she is broken down, laid bare and revealing her innermost demons to him.
But when she is done, spent and ready to move on, he is distant, leaving her needy and desperate. Where has her protector gone, are all his promises empty words?

The cliffhanger has left me biting off my acrylics and nearly giving into temptation to stalk Miss Cross for book No2 IMMEDIATELY!

I was given this book by author for honest review. After living through the worst that can happen Savannah Mae Matthews, Ava, moves to London and gets on with life. Only she’s not. She blends and has closed herself off except for a good friend she goes through her day trying not to feel to much for anything. Meet Jonah Jacobson, a lawyer, who request her to come to his offices to settle an inheritance. He too is closed off emotionally but for some unknown reason they can’t seem to get enough of each other. Until Jonah betrays her and she makes up her mind to start living instead of just surviving. Great book but does end on cliff hanger so book 2 better come quick so we can all find out if Ava forgives Jonah and makes a life together.

First off, let me say WOW! The beginning started off with a bang of a revelation. One hell of a start to a story.

Unfortunately it got a little slow for me after that. I wasn't THAT into it. Not sure what, but there was something missing.

THEN, things got a little steamy, a little heated, feelings were shared, secrets were revealed, and a huge bomb was dropped!!!! UGH, poor Ava!!

I'm SO glad I continued on because I was not disappointed in the end. Except for the cliffhanger ending!! :(
But, I am definitely anxiously awaiting the sequel Divinely Living!

****Spoiler****

Barely Surviving is a pretty apt title for this book.

It begins the story of Ava Mathews and her adoptive Step-Father. Heartless and the sole reason Ava's spineless, weak mother had taken her life. 10 years Ava survived a very solitary life, humiliated by him until her 18 Birthday, he rapes her. Ava's wish in life was for someone to take her away from the bastard who took the final shred of dignity she possed.

She get out and 4 years on is living in London. She receives the news that Alexander Matthew has been killed in a road accident leaving her the sole heir of his estate.
Ava wants nothing to do with him after the way he treated her. She makes that clear to the lawyers administering his estate.
Enter Jonah Jacobsson. Soon they are in the full throws of an affair.

The book wasn't badly written but what put me off it was over written sex scenes. Chapter after chapter. Not that I have an issue with sex scenes but I got fed up with over descritptive, repetative commentary about his large appendage and her over sensitised swollen groin.

The book is highly erotic and that's why Courtney Cross has gone overboard with the sex scenes. Jonah is also a jealous, possesive male who claims Ava pretty quickly. Mine resonated a lot throught the story.

Johah betrays her in this first book. You won't find out why until book 2.

Straight onto book 2 to find out how this story continues.

FOUR SOLID STARS

Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Awesome, awesome prologue! I loved it! It was gripping and it makes you want to read faster know more yet you also want to read slower to savor it.

However, I cant believe it's a cliff hanger! I was kinda dreading the end because I can feel that I have to wait to know what happens next to Ava and Jonah.

AVA

"I was tired of barely surviving. I laso knew that I had to stay connected to Jonah to embrace life fully and at last begin to live."

Ava had it tough, she grew up without a father and with a distant, uncaring mother but with everything that happened to her, I liked that she found her family in London. She just need to get a grip and learn to share her feelings so it wont eat her up. She's sassy where it counts!

JONAH

"... I'm tired of just surviving sweetheart, it's time to start living."

Jonah was hawt! As in panty-dripping, alpha male hot, take control man! And he's Irish, I love Irish men! Some things are left unsaid when it comes to his intentions and motives, that's what I wanted to know and I hope the second book would shed some light to this.

There are, however, some things that I did not like about this book.

1. Too much use of deep blues to emerald greens. It's just annoying for me. I mean, yes i get the color of their eyes, can we move on please.

2. The pacing from strangers to their i-cant-live-and-breathe-without-you is so fast, I feel like there should've been more, like something monumental (aside from the obvious sexual attraction) that made them so attracted and attached to each other.

3. There are grammatical flaws and some typos but it's nothing I cant move on and deal with. I know this is an ARC so I think there's still time to polish it.

Overall I liked this book, Their story is something that I would look forward to read, hopefully the second book would come out soon!

Great book, Courtney! Again, thank you for letting me read and review it. Best of luck in your career!

Would I recommend it? Oh yeah!

**JOSIE’S REVIEW**

*4.5 Stars*

Let me start off by saying for me a prologue tells me just how much I am going to enjoy a book and this prologue did just that. It showed the readers how much damage Savannah “Ava” Matthews suffered from her stepfather, Alex’s, brutal attack. She attempts suicide as a way to escape the betrayal, injustice and the pain within her. That did it for me…I could not stop reading!

Ava ends up moving across the world to London to escape Alex. Once she’s there, she is she summoned to appear to Jacob and Fitzgerald Law Offices. This is where we are introduced to hot and sexy Jonah! Their attraction to one another was instant and strong. Jonah felt drawn to Ava. He could not understand why Ava was so determined not take anything left to her from her now deceased stepfather. But he wants Ava and goes after her.

“Keep walking away from me Ava, I’ll see you sweetheart.”

“Your voice betrays you thoughts of my hard co*k inside you, fu**king you until you come are plaguing you Ava. I can think of nothing else than how your p***y will feel wrapped around me when I do.”
(Ummmm yep ok than!)

“Jonah you are so bad for me but God help me I want you.”

Jonah and Ava both had secrets. Once Ava’s secrets where out, she was able to open up and love Jonah. She thought things would be great. Little did she know that Jonah’s secrets were deeper and darker secrets than Ava could ever imagine. Can Ava move on from these secrets or will it destroy what they have?

I cried! Ok, first I cried for Ava and how she went through so much but survived and came out stronger for it. THEN Jonah’s secrets came out and I was a mess! I could not stop my tears from flowing. I was angry, hurt, betrayed and thought ok let me keep reading and see if I get an HEA. Nope, there is a cliffhanger (I know, right?)!!! Now I am stalking the author’s webpage to find out when book 2 comes out because I need to see how this ends.

First of all, This book was HOT, HOT, HOT! The attraction between the two main characters, Jonah and Ava are unbelievable. I loved reading about them. I couldn't put the book down. The relationship between Jonah and Ava was so hot and cold. Ava didn't want to let Jonah into her life fully because she was afraid of how her life would change. Every time that Jonah started to get close Ava would push him out and he was getting tired of it.

Ava had a really horrible life up until she turned 18 and moved to London. She had been living there for 4 years and loved it. She never wanted to return to the states and the awful stuff that happened to her involving her step-father Alex. She never even wanted to think of that name. Ava had a lot of one night stands and a couple of relationships that were very short. She just couldn't put herself out there to be loved, she doesn't know how to love. Until she met Jonah. Ava found out that she came into a lot of money and Jonah is put in charge of her finances and how she wanted to deal with them. Ava wants nothing to do with the law firm that he is a part of.

When Ava and Jonah are together all they can think of is how fast they can get naked and next to each other. It is an instant connection that they just can't seem to turn away from. They decide to just let it lead where ever it is supposed to go and just live their lives. Then something horrible happens... again and Ava can't deal with it. She has to figure out a way to get past it and be as happy as she can be. She decides to live.

I was very sad that the book ended how it did... in a cliffhanger. I really wanted to know what was going to happen next with Jonah and Ava. I gave this story a 4 star only because there were some grammatical errors and there wasn't too much back story on Ava. I would have liked to read a little more about her. I did however really love this book and can't wait for part 2.

I both loved and hated this one. The love for it is SO strong – but there were moments when I wanted to nothing but throw my book against something because I just couldn’t believe what was happening! I was hooked from the SYNOPSIS of this one! I mean, who wouldn’t want to read this book after reading that?! I felt like I HAD to know what happened!

The beginning of the book was a bit WOW, but it gave so much insight to what was to come next and why things were the way the were. The shocker I never saw coming kind of changed the momentum and the direction I thought the story was going to go in. I LOVED every single bit of it though! I think I enjoyed it much better this way, than what was playing out in my head before it happened.

One thing Ava never saw coming was Jonah. That is, until she saw him sitting in that chair that fateful morning. What followed was a mix of just about every single emotion you could feel. The two are so passionate. When things are good, it’s amazing – but when they are bad, you just want to shake them both and make them get it together! They are SMOKING HOT in some scenes and they have just the right amount of heat in other scenes. Courtney Cross sure knows how to work her wordplay!

The ONLY issue I have with this book, is that to me, it was a little to BAM! CONNECTION! I am not saying there is anything wrong with that – I just love me some build up, and I didn’t think there was enough of it in this one.. I will say the rest of it rocked my entire face off and I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Romance with a little UMPH!

Oh, Jonah, Jonah, Jonah . . . how I wouldn't mind a piece of you!

Ladies and Gentlemen, turn the A/C on, lower it to a frigid temperature and you might survive the heat from this book!

Jonah is a pure example of all things hot rolled up into one delicious, most delectable Irish Morsel! Yes . . . I said Irish--fully equipped with thick accent (among other things...ah-hem). Just go commando, ladies . . . just go commando! Save yourself the laundry!

Ava is a beautiful and strong woman who won't take crap from anybody! It's taken her a while to build up this wall and no ones going to break through it!

Then . . . their eyes meet and the stare down is what all great orgasms are built on. Yes . . . you are going to need to buckle in. While you're at it . . . grab the fire extinguisher.

Jonah tears down those walls in a way that will have you yelling out "Oh Hell yes!!" then looking around meekly to make sure no one heard you!

I love these two together! I felt such a connection on all levels (yes my mind can escape the gutter at times). Their pasts haunt them and just when they both let their guards down a bit of a cliffhanger happens that makes you pull out your hair whilst screaming "Nooooo!". I may be behaving a bit dramatic here but you will find yourself stalking Courtney Cross for any snippet of what's to come!

This was Courtney's debut and I am a big fan!! I loved her style of writing, her attention to detail and her wit! She is definitely one that I will snag off the virtual or physical book shelf as soon as she releases!!

I recommend you get Barely Surviving and you'll see what I'm talking about!!

~~Meli’s Review~~

Holy hell with the hotness of Jonah Jacobson. He is one alpha male walking sex on a stick.

Jonah is an attorney who was assigned to Ava’s case and there was an instant attraction to each other. Ava is a young woman who has had a very tragic past and she has moved across the ocean to start a new life. When everything is going good for Ava she gets a call she never expects to get along with a man who some how makes his way into her world and blast through all her walls. But Jonah has his own heartbreak and secrets and all he wants is Ava.

These two seemed to be the perfect pair. Both needing each other to just live. Their chemistry is off the charts. I could feel it when I read them. Just the sight of him had her quivering. Dealing with her past and trying to just live some how some way Jonah makes his way into her heart and she is terrified she is no good for him. He opens up to her and makes her see that they can be damaged goods together.

Jonah is the total alpha male along with the sweet and caring man. All he sees is Ava and his words just had me melting.

“Because I love you Ava, you are the beginning, the middle and the end for me. You are my happy ever after.” ~Jonah

I have to say I did not see what was coming and I was screaming at my kindle hoping what was happening was just a dream. Everything Ava had been through she just deserves happiness. I can not wait to read more on Ava and Jonah’s love.

This book is an amazingly 5 stars

Holy cliffhanger alert...but what a way to end it...and what a bumpy, emo ride that was for sure!
I picked up this book when it was on a free promo...and it started off with a horrific and tense BANG...no gunshots but it might as well have been.
Ava was put through hell by her step-father and after attempting to escape the only way she knew how, she ends up on her own, away from the monster 4 years later, when the book finally gets back to some sense of normalcy. Then her presence is requested at a solicitors office regarding her estranged step-monster-dad...and things take a decidedly hot and steamy and exciting turn. When she comes face to face with Jonah Jacobson, all her defenses come up and then go down in a puff of smoke and she is pitched into an emotional and sexually driven battle of wills.
This book is extremely moody, descriptive and at times, a tad too slow moving for me...and the repetitiveness of the dialogue gets to be too much...but I hung in there and pressed forward and things got really interesting and spiralled out of control. Before I could catch my breath, a MAJOR twist is revealed and poor Ava is sent tumbling down once again into another spiral of depression. We are left with a devastated but determined woman at the end and a big surprise appearance. Wonder what comes next...will have to read the next book to find out!

What a roller coaster of a ride.

Ava grips you from the beginning and as I read on I was left wondering which direction she'd actually take. With dark clouds hovering above her and weights on her shoulders she never asked for, any normal girl would crack... But this is Ava Matthews!

Jonah ... What can I say? The hair, the eyes, the complete package, a girls greatest weakness. I have to admit though, I had my moments with him and I am not ashamed to say I growled at him a few times.

Charlotte is the type of friend we should all be lucky enough to have in our lives and her brother Cameron, well, he has a twinkle in his eye!

All in all this is a MUST read. Courtney Cross has delivered a roller coaster of emotions, portrayer in characters you have only one option with ... To love.
A cliff hanger ending has me holding my breath now for book two.

This is a solid 4 star book. The prologue grabs you instantly and demands your attention. Knowing that there will be a second book, I was a little scared to finish this one. The book is very descriptive about surroundings and people. The book is very intense and emotional at the same time. You feel for Ava from the beginning and you understand why she is so guarded and on edge about men. Until, she meets Jonah and the effect he has on her is one of pure lust. I was on pins and needles when the book ended. I was so angry with Jonah and his betrayal. Hopefully, the next book brings Jonah some redemption and comes out sooner rather than later.. ~~Cathy

Jonah sure is one hot ass Alpha male and all he wants and sees is Ava. Ava deserves so much happiness with all the crap she has gone through. Ava got on my nerves at times she seemed very confused and not sure what she wanted.

Can't wait to see how this story plays out in the next book in the series due out this summer.

Wow! I am speechless. I can't express how amazing this book is! The book is in the league of fifty shades of grey and the cross fire series. Raw, intense, emotional. So much passion between Jonah & Ava, enough to sear the pages of the book or burn your Kindle up. Warning....Cliffhanger that will seriously make you want more and go and download/buy the next book as soon as you finish it.
