Mortifera is the story of two medieval Irish demon hunters who summon a demon of their own to battle the occult. This historical-horror-fiction-filled graphic novel has something for even the most discerning medieval horror fan. Do you like: Demons? We got 'em. What about ghosts? Yep. The Undead? Totally. Medieval Warfare? Boat loads, homie. Decapitations? Damn Straight! Humor? This one is subjective, I guess, but I sure think we have some funny stuff here.
Demons, ghosts and supernatural hunters - there's a lot in the genre and I wasn't sure at first that Mortifera would be able to give me something new in the genre. But it pleasantly surprised me by making me fall in love wi6th its main characters - tough as nails Catherine and her more laid back brother Ethan. They were really the force that kept me in this story.
It strikes an interesting, gallows-humor tone - a feeling that when the characters are joking or laughing, it's because there's no other way to keep from being doubled over with the weight of how bad things may be. But the characters, especially Ethan, maintain an edge of hope in the face of everything that made them enchanting.
There are a few problems - a couple editing misses in the text, and times when I'm not entirely sure what's happening in some of the art panels - but overall its an enjoyable read for anyone who's a fan of gothic fantasy tales.
