I will admit it: The cover got me.
And after reading it, I can confirm that it was perfect for this story.

Chandler is awkward, as you would expect any unemployed thirty-something who lives with his mother and is her full time caretaker. His voyeuristic tendencies from the safety of his home spins him into a wild fantasy world where he is more than what he can hope to be in real life.
And he is in love with his neighbor. His married-to-a-cop-and-has-a-kid neighbor, Samantha.
It is only a matter of time until things will spiral out of control and his mind will completely break from reality, especially now that he might lose her forever.

There are a number of surprising things about this story, but there are two things I need to highlight:
I actually felt a lot of sympathy for Chandler and, at times, were almost rooting for him.
That ending…man, that was the shit!

This was my first read of this author and he definitely has me interested in seeing what he will produce in the future. The character depth of this one is a big selling point and I can recommend it to horror fans in general. Not overly gory and I don’t think I would place it in the extreme category, though there was plenty of blood in the scenes that required it.

EEK! This was a skeevy story. Nothing like an lonely, creepy, neighbor who enjoys unsavory, fake relationships with porn stars online to keep himself in check. Did I mention that he cares for his elderly mother, too? Yeah, that just adds to the fun. Like Norman Bates meets Buffalo Bill. He doesn't look or appear like anything other than an awkward person, but deep inside he is a hateful, delusional killer. And he has been watching his neighbor's family for years and years and years...until something finally snaps. And things get really ugly. So there is a lot of good content in here. LM Kaplin gives you such a delightful vision of our antagonist, Chandler, that you feel like you're sitting next to him, watching the insanity. Now the pacing of the story felt a little rushed at times. I wanted some more from Samantha, his lovely neighbor, and his abusive relationship with her husband, and how it impacted Dylan. We did get some of that, but I felt like it could've gone a little deeper to make certain aspects of the story flow better in the latter part of the story. And, for some odd reason, I really wanted some perverse sexual encounter with Chandler's mother, too. I know that sounds really messed up, but with this caliber of person, it would have just further added to his disgusting behavior, feeling right as rain. But, aside from some of those minor critiques, this was a solid showing, making me want to see more from this author.

This is a great story! I was glued from the start. The author did a great job with Chandler, I’m unsure if we are supposed to dislike him but even after all the bad things he does you can’t help feeling sorry for him and cheering him on! What’s not to love about this one? Creepy neighbour, unhealthy stalkerish behaviour, great characters, great story!

Voyeurism. Delusions. A creep who knows everyone’s routines a little too well.

This book made me so angry, but in the best way possible. It’s unsettling, frustrating, and incredibly well-crafted. We follow a man whose delusions fuel his every action, giving us a terrifying look into his motivations, justifications, and spiraling obsession. What makes this even more disturbing is the dual POV—his, and that of the woman he fixates on.

Through her perspective, we see a woman trapped in an abusive relationship and how that affects not only her life but also her sense of security and autonomy. The book does an excellent job of portraying the harsh reality that, sometimes, for women, there’s no real “safe” choice. The tension builds with every chapter, and the ending? It ties everything together perfectly in a way that reinforces the unsettling themes of the story.

L.M. Kaplin is an incredible writer, and that’s because all the proof you need!

Is a deep dive into the mind of a creepy stalker. Holland, watching the neighbors family, too trying to become a member of that family and the most disturbing way.

There is someone to love about this book. The deep dive into the characters minds. The heart impact of every horrific scene. But I must save my riders part of you the things to me. The most was the incredible pacing from start to finish.

Kaplin proves he knows what he’s doing what is written horror, and he will as a firm spot as being one of my insta buy authors!

Kaplin did an excellent job in setting the scene with Chandler's social anxiety. I could see him as a real person. The scene where he needs to make a phone call is particularly relatable to me.
I'm conflicted about Chandler, I know I shouldn't like him because he's the "bad guy" but I hated Kevin more. Yes he was a crazy, delusional, creepy, voyeuristic weirdo, but he wasn't that bad.
Really really enjoyed this book. AND THAT ENDING!!!!

”But in Chandler’s distorted vision, he twisted reality and fantasy into his own perfect utopia.”

Mine is a story about thirty-five year old Chandler Hendricks— the reclusive, anxiety ridden, incel-type, that lives with his ailing mother.

Chandler spends his days looking out the window, watching the everyday lives of his neighbors. He loves to people watch— whether that be in real life or watching pornography. Building dangerous, parasocial relationships is one of Chandler’s most threatening vices.

Oh, Samantha.

Our main character is frighteningly obsessed with his married neighbor, Samantha, and Chandler will do anything to call her his own.

L.M. Kaplin builds a spiraling, deranged story based off of unhealthy obsession, anger issues, and faltering mental health. While Chandler is not hard to like— his internal character makes one question if they’d truly want to be around him. He comes off as psychopathic— at times charming and gentle, Chandler Hendricks is equally violent and impulsive. Kaplin does a fantastic job at creating a character whose façade complicates feelings for the reader.

And as the story progresses, it becomes equally darker. Chandler ultimately commits violent crime after violent crime in hopes that it will bring him closer to Samantha. His situation doesn’t allow him to run, so he kills.

I enjoyed this read, but I loathed the ending. It was fairly lackluster and a quick, easy way to wrap up the book.

I’m rating Mine as a ★ ★ ★ ★ star read for its intensity and ability to make me waver in my likeness towards Chandler’s character. It was a wild ride with plenty of murder, obsession, and dangers of unresolved mental health. If you’re into stories with the “weirdo recluse” trope, then this is the book for you.

LM Kaplin - Horror has done it again! Hot on the heels of his debut collection, Fang Fiction, he gives us his first full length feature. And boy, does it deliver...

We meet Chandler. He's mid-thirties, a loner and crippled with social anxiety, abandonment issues, and well.. let's just say Chandler isn't okay 😅
He spends his days caring for his mother who annoys him, watching the neighbours who annoy him, and fantasising about his neighbour Samantha, whose husband annoys him.
He's creepy and everyone knows it. But things reach a breaking point, and very quickly, Chandler's perception of reality shatters, and we, lucky readers, get to tag along for the ride!

And what a ride it is.

We should despise Chandler. He's doing some pretty despicable things. But I couldn't hate him. I actually felt sorry for him. LM Kaplin has the ability to write such a multi-faceted character, and I love how confused I was about my feelings while reading this! I highly recommend grabbing a copy as soon as it releases!

It was all going well but there's that ending scenario. I hate to admit while reading the book i was enjoying it very good but I just hate the injustice of it...

Samantha married to a police officer Kevin who has less care for his wife and their son Dylan. Chandler whose pathetic life attached to his ill mother glued to the bed; she could do nothing but depending totally on her son. Chandler love's to sneek his neighbours from his house privately. Slowly but surely his life became something else. He could feel himself again all by himself and thinking of his sick fantasy about Samantha as his wife; he became lunatic and total psychopath himself. Till this moment it was all going well, fast paced, exciting and interesting but then came that ending. Man just because only of the injustice that the author done to the story I hate it. I hate the ending to the core. I know that happily ever after can not be found in every story or say book but you have to understand sometime it is more important to know just when to trigger the negative impact in the story and not to disturb your reader's mind with sick feeling & disgust. I don't know by my word if I could feel you or not...

Thanks for your patience to read this review...

I found this psychological horror hard to put down, reading 70% of it in one sitting.

Chandler Hendricks is a socially awkward recluse. At just 35 years old, he lives his life vicariously through the people he watches daily from his living room window. Trapped by his ailing mother’s health, he’s unable to make a life for himself as he cares for her.

His favourite person to watch is his next-door neighbour, Samantha. She’s young and beautiful—the woman of his dreams. He knows he could give her a much better life than her current husband if she only gave him a chance.

Chandler is finally ready to make that change towards a better life for himself. Unfortunately, the life he longs for already belongs to someone else.

Hold on for a wild ride with this one! It’s a heart-pounding and action-filled feast for the eyes! You never quite know which way it’s going. A fantastic 5-star read.

Chandler lives at home with his bed bound mother that belittles him, and he can’t stand her. He is always looking out the window spying on his neighbors. He’s obsessed with his neighbor Samantha but she is married to Kevin and they have a child. Chandler will do whatever it takes to make Samantha and Dylan his family. This story was pretty wild, not as bloody as I’m use to but it was definitely pretty good. The ending was a total shocking twist, I was in shock with how that turned out.

This was one of the brawl books I was REALLY excited for.

Not going to lie, at first I had a hard time getting into this book. Once we get to the cabin in the woods (it’s always a cabin in the woods) shit gets GOOD.

YES, finding out who daddy really is was kind of random and I would have liked some more back story it’s still fine.

A fun, psychological break that we all get to enjoy. FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY.

I had high hopes for this one but the story was lackluster to me. A lot of other reviews are saying they loved how Chandler's anxiety was portrayed, but it didn't come off as authentic to me. There was a little plot twist at the end that got me. Overall, I don't regret reading it, but it's not one I'm going to rush to recommend either.

A neighbor obsessed with a family. So obsessed he goes too far. A young man who's confused with reality because of mental illness. Great story with a surprising ending that caught me off guard.

"He didn’t know much about moms, but he knew that one way to get on their good side was to be nice to their kid."

35 year old Chandler lives at home looking after his dying mother. The only contact he has with the outside world is a window from which he watches everyone. He becomes obsessed with the woman who lives next door and her son and imagines himself being in their lives as their husband/father. The only problem is that they already have one of those.
From the first page, we get to see that Chandler is a little odd. We also find out very quickly that he is very socially awkward and clearly resents being stuck at home caring for his mother. Very quickly, things start to escalate, and the bodies start to pile up. This was a quick read and one that I found myself flying through. I enjoyed it so much, and in the end, I couldn't help but feel a little sorry for Chandler.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this book in return for an honest review.

New to me author and this book is also part of the BOH Indie Author book brawl.

I love the book brawl because I get to read books (and authors) that weren't even on my radar. After reading this book, I became a fan of the author.

Dylan lives with his sick, dying and quite overbearing mother. He takes care of her and his highlight of every day is watching his neighborhood from the safety of his house. But his urge to break out of his sad existence is strong. He urges to be with a woman, to have a family, and to lead a normal life. The woman next door, Samantha, is the object of his desires and due to unforeseen circumstances, his life is about to drastically change.

I loved this story! My feelings spend a lot of time on an emotional roller coaster, up and down, sympathy - no sympathy for the main characters. Every one in this story is a victim of circumstances. You hate them, you feel sorry for them and then... . EXCELLENT written!

I’ve been meaning to get to this story for a hot minute now. I’m so glad I finally got to experience “Mine.”

This story follows Chandler, a grown man, who still lives at home with his mother. He can’t afford to live on his own and she needs his help to care to her needs, as she is bed ridden. Chandler’s mother is awful towards him and always has been. One day he finally has enough of her and decides to act impulsively 😱

Meanwhile, he’s infatuated with his neighbor. He watches her family very closely. He wants to be their family and take her husband’s place. He already has their 5 year old son on board. He loves it when Chandler plays outside with him, giving him the attention he craves that he doesn’t get from his father.

Chandler goes completely off the rails to get what’s his. He won’t stop til he gets his family he has always wanted as he’s watched them from his window over the years.

This was one hell of a story! This was also my first LM Kaplin read and it didn’t disappoint one bit! This was super intense from start to finish and very terrifying because these things can happen anywhere at anytime.

You never know who’s watching…

Highly Recommend!

Chandler is…awkward. Anything outside of his house isn’t something he's interested in. He makes the time pass by taking care of his sickly mother and surfing the web. His favorite hobby is spying on the neighbors. Or one in particular, his next-door neighbor Samantha. He hears the arguments at night. He knows she’s unhappy, and he’s convinced that he’s the love of her life. And he will be one way or another.

I think the scariest thing about this book is that in the beginning, I found Chandler to be relatable. He’s awkward and his social anxiety is something I feel on a personal level. Several times I found myself whispering “No” to my Kindle because I felt his embarrassment in several scenes. The desperate urge to relate to another person and be rid of his constant loneliness makes it easy to understand his slow decline into madness.

The relationship between Chandler and his mother gave me Psycho vibes. As the story ramped up, I found It hard to put down. I couldn’t wait to find out what trouble Chandler would get himself into next.

I received a free copy for my opinion, and this is my honest review.

If you’re a fan of psychological horror novels, stop what you’re doing and pick up this book. I first read LM Kaplin’s occult cosmic horror book “Usher of the Fallen” and I was so impressed by it that I knew I needed to check out his other stories. He seems to be an author that is skilled in different genres, which is a rare talent to have. This story had my attention the entire time! I just read a couple of the other reviews and I’m glad I’m not the only one that felt a little bad for Chandler. The guy is just so crazy and can he help it, really? The other characters were well developed too, like the object of Chandler’s affections- Samantha and also her son, Dylan. There is not one dull moment in this story, check it out! You might need to do some yoga or listen to some relaxing music in-between some of these chapters but the ride is totally worth it.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 stars

This is the story where I truly question my morals and sanity as a normal person. I jumped right in just expecting bloody shit of gore fest. No more, no less. But as I read into Chandler's story, I came to know him as a character.. It was kind of difficult for me to hate him for what he did. I kind of sympathizes with him. I don't know. With all of the unhinged and crazy things he had done, I still think that he deserved a happy ending. I maybe insane for telling this, haha. But with all of honesty, this book is a freaking good read. This is a must read for every horror, extreme horror, splatterpunk readers! Such an amazing read.

Umm what?! This was so much fun! A creepy neighbor who watches your every move with a little bit of Bates Motel thrown into the mix. Yes! And if you said you guessed the twist… you didn’t 🤪 I would have like a LITTLE more backstory to that but it was definitely shocking!

This was awesome. It was written so detailed, so realistically, that I felt a great sense of unease right away and it only grew and grew with each page. The characters are written so well that it was easy to choose who I liked and who I didn’t. I set this book down regretfully when adulthood and life came calling, but the eagerness with which I ate this up every chance I got speaks volumes. I felt immersed in this story, and the twist!!!!! The shocking reveal!!!! I did NOT see that coming and how quickly my entire outlook on the characters of this heart wrenching tale changed. Absolutely brilliant.

Sometimes you read an extreme horror novella about a weirdo who goes off the rails and you know that he’s fucked up, but you kind of empathize with him because the author imbues him with brief moments of humanity. Looking at you, Matt Clarke. Sometimes though, you get a story where the weirdo in question is straight up convinced that his behavior is normal and that he’s doing his victims a favor. That kind of story, when well written, can be incredibly unsettling. That is Mine.

Chandler spends his days people watching from the safety of his home. He knows way more about them all than they would be comfortable with, and apparently they all know he’s watching them because he does get called out for his behavior. People watching in itself isn’t a big deal, but Chandler’s gone well beyond watching. He’s become obsessed with his neighbor, Samantha, to the point where he’s imagining a future with her. There’s just one problem. She already has a husband and child. She has a family and he’s just the creep next door. Surely Chandler can make his dream come true, right?

Let’s talk about the audiobook for a moment. TC King is a new to me narrator. The narration was good overall, but I did have to increase the speed to match my reading speed. I would listen to King read to me again though. His voice is pleasant, he doesn’t stumble over words, and I found his portrayal of Chandler to be quite convincing.

I hadn’t paid close attention to the cover art until I really got into the book, but I have to say it is perfect. The family portrait with the scratched out face and blood splatter gives you a pretty good idea what this book is about. The story went in the direction I expected, but still managed to keep me on the edge of my seat without being completely predictable. That ending…oof! Chandler’s transition from creepy neighbor to homicidal maniac was like a switch flipped. Full disclosure, I did receive an Audible code from Kaplin. That said, my reviews are always honest and all views expressed are my own, regardless of how I obtained the book. I really enjoyed Mine, and if you like to read stories about people giving in to their delusions, I think you’ll like this one too.
