A world-class anthology of short stories inspired by the word 'home'. This collection features known and emerging writers contributing everything from flash fiction to extended short stories. All monies raised from sales of this book go directly to Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity.
"Stories for Homes" is a great anthology of short stories and some poems about the theme of home. A huge number of authors collaborated on this selection that covers about every aspect of the home experience that one can imagine: an unsatisfactory return to the family home, a TV makeover of a home in Babylonian style, Ellis Island, re-homing and many many more. Issues range wide from immigration to housing in general or to a broken central heating; home can be a house, the homeland, where the heart is or the 'musty scent of the bathroom floor". The editors have done a marvellous job at bringing the pieces together to create a natural flow through the pieces that vary in style and sentiment and so offer something for everyone. Award winning authors and newcomers alike have contributed to this anthology but the standard of writing is consistently high. The proceeds of the book go to a housing project, so please buy a copy and support this worthy cause so it can be said that
my friend Sal conceived of this book in APRIL. three months later, here it is. damn, woman!
the stories are, so far, incredible. i just read Drowning in Fresh Air and the notion that home is a person... well i am in love with that notion.
THANKFULLY this is now out in hold-it-in-your-hands format, so i will FINALLY finish it!!!! i am awaiting it's delivery :)
ok it is here! and i have completed it! and i would say that only a handful of the stories were less than stellar and truly, i do mean stellar. there were a LOT of stories in here. it was great to dive into for a while as well as picking through stories while i read novels. i am so glad i own this book. i am glad i helped a cause. i think my friend, Sal, is a genius and though her fiction is not included in this collection, i have read it, and she needs to publish as well
Brillant collection of stories, too many to mention any specifically. All on the broad theme of 'home' but varying widely in tone, style and voice. Over sixty stories, all wonderfully written. Most are what you might call literary fiction but there's some great genre fiction in there as well, and even some verse. And it's for a brilliant cause - all profits go to the charity Shelter.
When I moved into my new home recently, unpacking the boxes, which at one point threatened to reach my ceiling, and fighting to keep my turf alive were probably my two greatest frustrations after trying to get parcels sent to a house that had not yet been honoured with a post code.
Then, saved by the Amazon locker service, I picked up Stories for Homes. Housed within its 500 pages are stories created by a community of award-winning and emerging authors in aid of Shelter.
Reading the opening story made my earlier frustrations seem…well…pretty minor. There I was, thumbing the pages while sat on my new sofa in my new house with its new carpets, new kitchen and new bathroom, reading about a girl living in accommodation where infected needles are closer than I felt comfortable...
OK, so I wrote one of the stories in this collection...setting that aside, this was great to dip in and out of. SO many different takes on the theme of 'Home'...it's an emotional rollercoaster at times, and left me thanking my lucky stars that I have a roof over my head.
All proceeds to Shelter, the UK charity - so an enjoyable, guilt-free read. Will be going back to re-read quite a few again.
An eclectic collection. These stories have been written by many different authors and in a wide variety of styles. I was impressed by how many stories were within the anthology and the quality of the writing. Good book.
A huge collection of varied short stories. Absolutely brilliant and I'd particularly recommend to anyone who is starting out reading short stories. Plus - all for a great cause.
