For starters, I actually didn't know that it was a prequel. That was a fault on my part for not reading the description thoroughly which only means one thing, I do not know anything about the Elementals. There is a danger for reading prequels before the main novel. You could get lost trying to follow the plot, you could feel the story is flat, or you could keep up because it's an entirely different thing. As for me, I just dived into the story.

You can easily adapt and digest the story as you go through the book. There was a prelude to give you a brief introduction. I like how the heroine was very strong and independent. The story was fast-paced not leaving any dull moments which were also the reason why it still held my attention. Mind you, I had a hard time finishing it due to lack of time and because of work but I was able to pick up where I left off most of the time.

I really did appreciate the story. But I have a few sentiments about it. First, I just wish there were more explanation. The characters were not introduced properly and events kept on happening without elaborating facts that the reader need in order to fully grasp it. There was room for imagination so it should have been maximized. I feel like I was not able to connect to the characters and to the realm.

Second was it lacks build-up of the events which was very important since it could help strengthen the development of each character and it could show the proper sequence as to why such events are happening. Therefore, the thrill of reading such an exciting new story was not present.

Third was the "heart". It felt bland and I feel like the story was in monotone. If there were heightened climax and build-ups, maybe, just maybe, I could be hooked in an obsessive way.

In conclusion, the book is fine but needs more improvement. I did enjoy the different world perspective, but it's not enough for me to recommend it to my friends. Like cooking, it needs more ingredients for it to taste good and make me forget my name. I hope the next book will be better.

THE BATTLE FOR ARCANON MAJOR lays the background and history for Alexandra May's ELEMENTAL: THE FIRST, book 1 in the Primord Series. As an action-packed, fast-paced, prequel, it tells of Halíka Dacomé and Nerído Xipilé in their true forms and you learn about their love story from the beginning.

Halíka Dacomé is a warrior princess who possesses powers to heal, mindspeak, and draw upon the earth in battle. Her prowess as a leader and soldier have led her people to victories over and over. Although her loyalties to her race has been proven over and over, she is deceived by the king, her own father and ordered to marry the leader of the enemy, thus insuring the survival of all, or so she is told. Unfortunately, her heart belongs to Nerído Xipilé, a man from another planet and race. When he comes to her and proposes marriage, of course, this is what she wants, especially after feeling the betrayal of her own father.

When the opportunity to defy the laws of war arise, in order to save her people, Halíka Dacomé takes the risk, with the help of her closest friends. In the aftermath, she finds even more betrayal and pain from those she loves.

Halíka Dacomé is a strong character, who thinks with both her head and her heart-probably her biggest downfall! Alexandra May has developed her characters so well that you feel all of the emotions, see the scenes, feel the power of the moment! This is a MUST read for anyone who has already or will be reading ELEMENTAL: THE FIRST! Well done! I was glued to the pages, white-knuckling it all the way!

Another book I championed last year was Elemental: The First. I was eagerly awaiting the sequel and surprised when Alexandra May decided to publish another book first. I can't wait for the sequel but when this came up at Net Galley I was intrigued.

And I read it in about 4 hours straight. It comes right into the story, at a crunch time and then just as you think you know how it's going to pan out, everything changes! The ending is one of the saddest I've read in a long time, and I'm very glad this is only number 1 of the Lost dacomé files because I'm dying to find out what happens next.

So, without giving away too many spoiler, Halika Dacome is threatened with a union with the opposing war lord. But they have other plans. Just as an agreement is met, lots of important people are murdered in front of her eyes and her father is spared on the assumption that all the Elementals are going to die anyway. But Halika doesn't believe that, she thinks they stand a chance of winning the war against the enemy. When her childhood friends arrive they bring war ships that enable her to stand a fighting chance. She also begins her bittersweet romance with Nerido Xipile (who I thought she hated from the first book Elemental: The First).

Anyway just as everything seems to be going to plan, it all falls apart. And not in a good way. There's an interesting chapter right at the end called Double Cross and that's exactly what happens. Except its not from all the people you expect, well it is and it isn't. You'll find out if you read it.

The world building and royal/political systems, the way of life, and the sheer characterisations in this book are mesmerising. I felt every high of happiness, and every low when it all went wrong. I even had a wobbly chin at the end when the Scribe finishes the story.

Absolutely this is a book to read. It doesn't matter if you enjoy Sci-fi or not, the story is of the characters and not of the world they live in.

5 out of 5 - I loved it!

This book follows Halika Dacome, the leader of the army and the daughter of the king. Her people once ruled their planet but now they are almost extinct and are fighting to save the one last city (Arcanon Major) from their enemies. She saves her people from the threat but is ultimately betrayed.

What I liked about this novel was while much of the novel had an alien feel, you could really get inside of Halika's feelings and thoughts. She was torn between loyalty to her father, and saving her people. It was a roller coaster of ups and downs and ultimately a bittersweet ending.

I would have liked to have a bit more development on a few of the characters, as it would have helped me to understand their motivations more. And the king and the enemy leader remained a bit one-dimensional. It would have been more enjoyable if they were a bit more rounded with more good qualities.

Ultimately though this was a nice, quick read and I look forward to reading other novels in this series one day.

NOTE: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

The Lost Dacoma Files is a book that, once you start to read it, will take you on an amazing journey in the life of Halika Dacome - in the 71st Dynasty of Capiok Dacome - Ruler of Xiryathan.

Hmmm, am I taking you into the future or the past? Interesting question that I'll allow you to answer for yourself when you read this captivating story.

Though Halika is the daughter of a King, at the age of 16, she becomes a warrior in a world of ongoing war. She is given the role of Legion Overlord which fits her natural instincts and skill. Not only is she unafraid to face the enemy, she is also compassionate and caring about those who serve beneath her.

Alexandra brings Halika and the main characters alive in the mind and imagination of the reader. She has presented an intriguing book of science fiction.

Disclaimer: This is a prequel to a series I haven't read yet, which made it a bit hard to follow at times, but not to the extent that I wasn't able to keep up. Because it was a very short book, it didn't go in-depth into all the different people, which probably helped. I feel like I have a working knowledge of the different groups, though, and look forward to continuing the story. I liked Halika Dacome, the main character, and how she was a warrior and a leader but took the time to look out for the people she was in charge of, including her younger brother, with whom she was very close. Not so much her father, though, as he was a cold and heartless man, so that was totally understandable.

All in all, I enjoyed this very quick read and look forward to seeing where the story goes.

4/5 stars.

*** I would like to thank NetGalley, Pauma Publishing, and Alexandra May for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I've always been wary of prequels to books, mostly because they can either frustrate your desire to read more of the books or excite you to love the characters more. Honestly, if the word prequel is attached, I tend to avoid them completely. I am pleased and excited to say that I am glad that I read this one.

The Battle for Acranon Major by Alexandra May is a sort of backstory for what is happening in the book Elemental: The First. In the prequel, you are introduce to a unique world that is different from our own. These people, Elementals, are far more advanced than any human civilization and yet there is something about them that lingers far enough back in history that you know they aren't modern day characters. It doesn't take long before you are attached to the characters, to the world, to their lives.

Halíka Dacomé is the center character for the story, bringing a character that I've been familiar with since I read Elemental: The First. Instead of viewing her as a hardened warrior, a vicious being, and an Elemental without feeling, I learned just how deep this character actually was. I never understood what was so amazing about her until I read this. She has so many dimensions, so many roles to play in this hierarchical culture she was born into. Her main quality as a character in the beginning is loyalty -- loyalty to her father, loyalty to her people, and loyalty to the person everyone expects her to be. It becomes clear as the story progresses, loyalty must be the first thing to go. She is a beautiful character because of how well developed and written she is. In such a short story, I became attached to her and fell in love with her story.

Now, I really want to focus on the aftermath of the broken loyalty. The first thing I noticed was the fact that those closest to her were often the source of the greatest betrayal. Her friendships were her greatest weak point in her armor and it was definitely exploited throughout the story. She is such a strong character but I think her loyalty stems from trust which often connects with innocence to the betrayals of friends and family. I wanted to shake her for being naive and yet I cannot place any blame on her because her innocence and naivety reminds me a lot of myself.

Don't get me wrong when I say that the betrayals frustrated me (although they were important to the plot) and that the relationships she created were a source of anxiety for me. Who do you trust? Who can you trust? That is something that the main character battles with throughout the story. I love the characters that made up her group of friends because just like the main character, they are as well developed and interesting. I was sad to not learn more about her father or the bad guys of the story but of course, the story was short. The romance in the story was good and I loved the forbidden twist to it which I know can only lead to greater heartache. All of the characters that played a part in the story were great and definitely made a great impression on me.

Woohoo! I get to talk about my favorite thing: the world the author created. There is nothing quite like when an author executes a fantasy world and manages to make it connect so well with the reader's opinion of a fantasy world. I never once thought, "Oh this world is weird," or "This simply isn't believable." I completely bought into the world and could make connections between Earth and this world the author had brought to life on the page. I love when stories do that.

This story is an epic prequel to what I believe will be a great series, especially if it continues to follow the pattern of this story. It can be read prior to Elemental: The First or after but it definitely fills in a lot of blanks that are left at the end of Elemental.

A point to note, while reading the book, I had a feeling that I was missing things from the main series, the Elementals. For example, throughout the book, it was mentioned that the people from Nerido’s planet, the Xelipes, could not be trusted. Why? No reasons were stated. Either this was a failure of input of information in the book, or it was an expected common knowledge.

This book was not bad because it held my attention throughout the book. The book started right in the middle of action, right in the middle of the war. Halika was fighting the Primod through the first third of the book. When it seemed that they were going to lose the war, Halika’s friends rode to the rescue. After that, Halika married Nerido and led a military coup. Her military coup and she was sent away on exile. Whew, Halika sure did a whole lot of things in a mere 115 pages! The fast pacing resulted in not a single dull moment.

But the exact same qualities of this book that held my attention throughout this book were also its biggest flaws.

First, the book started right in the middle of action. There was no introductory paragraphs to ease me into the plot and endear the characters to me. I simply did not have time to develop feelings for the book and its characters. As such, I did not feel for Halika and her people and planet.

Next, the fast pacing did not help either. The events in this book seemed to be happening for the sake of happening. There was no buildup of events and more importantly, feelings. This book simply did not have the “heart”, if you get what I meant.

Furthermore, character development was poor. Except for Halika, the other characters were one-dimensional. Her brother, Jerik, was a young man eager to prove himself. He loved his sister very much but not so for his father. Nerido loved Halika. The others were even worse. Cary was Halika’s good friend. She cared about Halika. I don’t know what else to say about her. As for Halika, I won’t mince my words — she was a Mary Sue. She had superior magical and fighting abilities. She was well-loved by her people. How perfect could she be? But oh no, she had a flaw — she enjoyed killing the Primods. How could that be a flaw when throughout the book, the Primods were positioned as disgusting insect-like creatures that had destroyed almost the whole planet? There was no buildup of events or elaboration of other characters so that the reader would be revolted at Halika.

In conclusion, this book was passable and enjoyable. But it was not a high quality book that I would recommend to others. I would not be reading the other books in the series.

Wow. That was my first thought after reading the last word in this book. This was a fantastic book. From start to finish it gripped me. I finished it in two days even reading with a migraine headache.

I loved the character of Halika Dacome. She is the daughter of the king, and Overlord of the Army. She is a strong and caring leader. She cares deeply and compassionately for her people and the men and women under her command. She is loyal to her father, who hasn’t responded to his children as a father since their mother died. As much as I like her however, when she used her power in the final battle, I didn’t much care for the person she became. Yet, I felt for her too when she received her sentence. The quick change in the way I felt about Halika is all due to the skill of the author. I’m not quite sure how she did it, but she has a powerful use of words.

This was an excellent book with clean language, suitable for all ages from teens through adults. The romance element in it was sweet and clean. The plot was very interesting with a number of surprising twists. Even at the end of the book I’m not convinced totally one way or the other whether or not Nerido wanted to marry Halika purely out of love or also partly with an ulterior motive. Perhaps further clarity will come in the sequel.

I loved the plot of this story, and the many different directions it took as various incidences took place that cast a new light on the actions of the characters. The author has done a marvelous job of making you be able to relate to each of the main characters, whether it be to love them or to hate them.

The descriptions of the use of Halika’s powers are quite vivid and create awesome imagery within the mind. Likewise the description of the world Xiryathon.

This book is the prequel to The Elemental Series. I’m definitely looking forward to reading all of these books.

This was one of the best books I have read this year! It’s now one of my favourites. I gave this book 5 stars!

I received this book for free in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Thank you Alexandra May for the chance to read The Battle for Arcanon Major.

A couple of months ago, I had the opportunity to read Elemental. It was a good book, but I felt like it ended just as it was starting to get good. (I can't wait to read more in that series)

I really loved The Battle for Arcanon Major. It took off running for me. We meet Halika Dakome, the commander of the Elemetal's armies, and daughter of the King. We get to see her compassion and caring as she tries to shelter her brother, care for the soldiers in her army, and defend the defenseless from the enemy Primords. I love Halika's magic. She is able to call forth magic from the earth to feed her soldiers and heal them. Of course I love magic, and am especially partial to Elemental magic lately.

Alexandra May manages to put together a captivating world, introduce a political system in embroiled in a civil war. She has a wonderfully strong female heroine, who is compassionate, strong and entirely insecure about her femininity. Her secondary characters are likeable. I especially loved to see Halika's relationship with her brother Jerik. For a Novella, that is pretty fantastic. Of course there is the cliffhanger ending... But it gives you insight into the backstory of Elemental that can only add to and enrich that series. In fact, I am pleasantly suprised and excited to see that this is the first in the "Lost Dakome Files". I even went back and re-read the last chapter of Elemental, so that I could peice together who decended from whom.

I would love to read more about Halika and her new adventure she was embarking on at the end of Battle of Arcanon Major. If you plan on reading Elemetal: The First.... I strongly recommend reading this Novella first. And if you are looking for a fun short fantasy, I also would pick this one up. Great Job Alexandra May!!!!

Halíka Dacomé is a skilled warrior who is not ready turn her planet over to anyone. While her father rules the kindom she rules the battlefields. The Primords want to take over the planet just like they have many other ones before it. Halíka Dacomé has powers but doesn't use them to there full strentgh it has been forbidden for reasons she doesn't know. Her father is ready to turn the planet and Halíka Dacomé over to Arfron Uhnok a Primord. She won't accept that and in list the aid of some of her friends to take them all out. Little does she know that she is about to make some bad decisions that will have an impact on the future of them all. She follows her heart and that will be her downfall.

Halíka Dacomé is a person who takes charge and does what has to be done. She a lot of times leaps in without thinking of the results of those actions. She is also very powerful and she will have to learn to control it.Nerido Xipile is her childhood friend and she feels more than friendship for him. He is powerful as well and you can tell he hides many things. Jerik, Halíka Dacomé brother is a sweetie who I loved. He does what he can to help her and always has her back.

I read Elemental: The First a while back and my downside to that book was not knowing the background. This story did an excellent job feeling me in and wanting more. It is a different kind of book that keeps your attention. It has a nice blend of action, magic, romance, friendship, betrayal and so much more. It seems like something is always going on to hold your attention. It really makes you feel for Halíka Dacomé and all she tries to overcome and goes thru. I really ended up loving her character and cheered her own. Yes at times she should have listen to people but I can understand why she didn't. For an amazing book with wonderful characters pick this up and try it.

WOW!! I am amazed! First, I’m normally not really a sci-fi fan but it’s such a great book and has so many fantasy elements that I LOVED it! It’s just surprising that such a dark story can have so much brightness. and it’s short, but not really a short story. I would consider it about half of a normal novel. This is such a good prequel!

So, Halika, Hally to her brother and friends, is a warrior princess. Her father is a LOSER king. I’m sorry but I have a lot of hate towards the king. I have nothing but LOVE for Hal! She is strong, brave, fierce and wants to do what’s right to help the people of the kingdom. She’s in charge of the army, and she’s earned the right. She just impresses me continuously!

You know I love side characters. There’s not too many supporting characters, but the few they have are awesome! They were written in a way that you feel like they’re your friends too. And Neri- he’s HAWT!! As the boyfriend should be though boyfriend may not be the right word. I’m so enthused about how these kids, yeah kids, save a planet!

The writing is EXCELLENT!! I started reading and didn’t stop! I just devoured it! After reading, I really can’t wait for book two in the elemental series to come out! And it also gives you so much background and understanding! I’m fully invested in this whole series! GIMME GIMME GIMME MORE!! 5 FIERCELY THRILLING PAWS!!

Thanks to Alexandra May for the opportunity to read The Last Dacome Files #1 The Arcanon Major in exchange for an honest review. I can honestly say that is was FABULOUS. My only complaint was that I wish I had had this available before I read Elemental, just to get a better understanding of the backstory. Now that I know things are not as they seemed (thought Halíka hated Neri) can't wait to get more of their story. I always enjoy a complex plot with a lot of subterfuge and manuevering woven throughout, which the author provides. Hailka, the daughter of the King, as well as the commander of the Elemental's army, is a strong heroine with a lot of responsibilty on her young shoulders. She is a fierce and compassionate leader that must defend the people from the evil Primords. I love how she uses her abilities to accomplish her goals and make things the best she can, especially as she uncovers and participates in the conspiracies that occur.
The relationship between Halika and Neri is believable, sweet and sad. How will Halika ever know if Neri's actions were truly his own? The cliffhanger ending was heartbreakingly sad. I can only hope that the next book sheds some light on the twist that leads us to believe there is still hope. Looking forward to reading more of both of these series!

I recieved an ARC copy of this book for the purposes of reviewing it. I'm super glad that I was given the opportunity to, my time is pretty precious, I have a lot of projects going at one time, and this book was more than worth my time.

I've been getting more into the Fantasy/Sci-Fi mix lately, starting with The Dark Tower series by King, though that one has a lot of western and horror elements as well. This book was more of a pure blend of fantasy and sci-fi which was very satisfying.

I would guess that this is a novella due to the sheer speed at which I devoured it, so it can't be more than 300 pages, but a complete and rich story gets told. This is the back story of where Halika Dacome came from and how she came to be on Earth in the modern day, via the Elemental Primord series by Alexandra May. I've previously read the first in this series and enjoyed it quite a lot, the back story explains a lot of things I had serious questions about as well as introduced Elementals that I haven't met yet.

I would highly recommend this to anyone whose already a fan of the Elemental Primord series to help fill in a few gaps, but I would also recommend it to anyone as a jumping off point into the series, it contains a great introduction into Halika Dacome and who she is which blends very well with the first book in the series.

3.5 stars

I liked this book. It was good and exciting. The author is really good at describing the, to the reader, unknown scenery of another planet. I could really imagine how this place looked like and I really liked that.

But I did have some difficulties with this book and that is why I only gave it 3.5 feet, not because it was bad I just think perhaps it was too much war in this book. The battle scenes were too long. I mean in a way that is how the book should be since this book is about a battle but I just found it hard to read sometimes and I had to struggle with some parts of the book. I also felt some distance to the main character in some way and had problems to relate to her. But at the same time I think that was a way for her to survive her own life. She had to somehow distance herself from everything around her to keep her sanity. But that also made it hard for me as a reader to relate to her character.

But over all this was a good book worth reading. I do not feel like I have wasted any time reading this, not at all and I do think I would like to read the sequel because sometimes you need to read more than just the first book to really get to know a character and to understand the story the author wants to tell.

Other than too much war scenes this book had what you want a good book to have, a little romance, excitement and suspense.

I got my very first ARC for this prequel to the Primord Series. I've read Elemental, which I've enjoyed since it made me think of The Secret Circle mixed with Roswell. The Battle of Arcanon Major is the Prequel to Elemental: The First. I had a hard time getting to the ebook at first, but that’s mostly because I was distracted and exhausted from the xmas holidays. Once I got more into it, then I began to enjoy the story better. I enjoy the sci-fi aspect and the love story between Halíka Dacomé and Nerído Xipilé. I’m not a huge fan of war though, but it was interesting since they used their powers at the last battle. It would have been really fun to see this Prequel into a Movie or a TV show to see how the action plays out. I found the story heartbreaking in the end… but now it makes more sense as to where Rose Frost comes from and the story of her past life as Halíka Dacomé. I don’t want to reveal too much of the story, but I do recommend it to anyone who loves Sci-Fi, Action and Romance. I am really looking forward to reading Elemental: The Circle of Fire (Primord #2), which is coming out on April 28th 2013.

The Last Dacome Files #1 The Arcanon Major by Alexandra May was an ARC given to me for an honest review. So the short answer here is that it’s excellent and people must read it. I loved it so much that I am going to have to buy it when it is released. Why some might ask? Well the prose and plot are woven together to be a complex tapestry that reads fast while completely submersing the reader. The characters are productive and believable. I have read the first book in this series, I loved it as well, I mention it here as this novella precedes the fist book and I don’t want to produce spoilers here. But this book provides such a lush history to the world created and to the characters that I had to immediately reread the first book. I don’t honestly know if it is more fun to read The Last Dacome Files #1 first and then Elemental: The First or the other way around but the basic premise here is read them both; for their unique plots and rich characters that leave the reader satisfied and hoping for more.

Well, if I had to sum up this book in only one word it would be MINDBLOWING!

I found Alexandra May's book "Elemental: The First" online for free about a month or two ago, I thought it was wonderfully written and was very refrseshing. She very generously offered to give me an ARC when she saw a had marked this book as a "to-read" if a would review it for her. I'm so glad she did! I think this book sheds some light on the mystery that entrances you in the first. I actually think I'm going to re-read "Elemetal: The First" with this new found understanding of Halíka Dacomé and the three other elementals.
In the start of the book we find Halíka Dacomé on the brink of a battle against the Primords. We follow her from there through ups and through downs while she's trying to save herself, her family, her friends, and most importantly, her people. In the end (trying not to give away too much here) the whole story of how the Elementals made it to earth made so much more sense. I think this book was AMAZING and I can't wait for more!

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

The Battle for Arcanon Major is an interesting story. The history of the Primords and the Elementals is well told. It was a fast read and kept my interest throughout. I often have trouble wrapping my head around science fiction but this story was easy to follow.

The battle scenes were described well enough that it was easy to picture what was happening but they weren’t too graphic, which is a real plus especially in young adult fiction.

I did wish the characters were more developed. To avoid spoilers I’ll just say that there were times I should have been elated or devastated for Halíka Dacomé and her friends but I didn’t because I didn’t feel much of a connection to the characters.

This is definitely a book that young adults would enjoy.

This novella is excellent. May imparts the history of Halika Dacome and her fellow rebels, giving insight into the events of Elemental: The First and Elemental: Origins.

May's skill at weaving a story is superb. The narrative is immediately engaging, drawing readers in to an alien world filled with war, weary soldiers, and a leader who is becoming torn between what she is supposed to do and what she feels she needs to be done.

I'm looking forward to reading Elemental: Circle of Fire, but I am just as eagerly awaiting the next installment of The Lost Dacome Files.

I was given an eARC to read. I hadn't read this author previously. So I had no idea how this would go. It was a great book. It is the prequel to Elemental. I think I would have understood the plot elements a little better if I had read the first book prior to this one. I enjoyed the book and I am looking forward to the first one.

I really enjoyed this novella, and wait to read the next installment to the prequels for "Elemental: The First". I'd really like to more about the life of Halíka Dacomé and her companions once they arrived on the planet they were exiled to.

Thanks for the great read Alexadra May.

*This book was provided by the publisher/author for an honest review.*

The Battle for Arcanon Major by Alexandra May is the prequel to her other series and lays the groundwork and history for her Primord world. I haven't had the chance to read her other series but I certainly am dying to now! The Battle for Arcanon Major is a must read for any lovers of her Primord series!
