Sociology: Themes And Perspectives presents an extensive introduction to the field of sociology. It contains a detailed coverage of the concepts. For more than twenty years, it has served as a textbook for various undergraduate courses on the subject. It is a handy reference book for aspirants of the Indian Civil Services examination who have chosen sociology as one of their subjects.
The book covers concepts such as social stratification, sex and gender, poverty, social exclusion, religion, crime and deviance, education, politics, power, communication, and the media. It also explores topics like race, ethnicity, nationality, health, medicine, work, unemployment, culture, and identity.
This book was first published in 1980. This edition is a 2011 reprint by Oxford University Press.
An almost not quite pathetic attempt to describe this subject as a science from Durkheims 'Le Suicide' denoting the 4 genres of self killing through David Matza's 'Delinquency and Drift' (bad excuses therein)and Carol Wotserface's (forgotten surname)study of the Moonies... well you might as well get a book/PhD from your years out what! All in all it was just an A level text book and quite droll in parts - I think it equips one with a wide ranging perspective (one of the words in the title)of strangers and that can't be a bad thing!
Our sociology A-level teacher knew we weren't really interested in this or any of the other books he taught from. He always used to refer to it as "the blue book" and had an uncanny knack of being able to select it from the bookshelf behind his desk without looking round. There was a green book as well, can't remember who wrote that.
What makes the society? Who, if there are any, can change the society? These are the questions sociologists trying to answer. This book covers the major topics and theories, illustrating their strengths and weaknesses.
The holy bible of Sociology. I still pick it up now and then to reminisce on my studies or simply re-read about some interesting concepts. Dense and dry, but interesting in its own way.
Simply written, dull as dishwater from the man who cornered a lucrative market. If you want to pass your sociology exam you'd better get this. Otherwise read something readable.
The big fat handbook of Sociology. Not an interesting read but it's supposed to be a textbook and they're rarely page turners. But it will definitely get you through your Sociology A level/ degree.
