There are three truths Lark knows with absolute certainty: - There is nothing she won't do for those she loves, - Those born without magic will always be seen exclusively as prey, - Never trust the Zodiac Kinship
When her father falls deathly ill, Lark is sent into one of the most dangerous places in Meridian to save his life. She braves old myths and older magic, but a twist of fate puts a target on her back and the Crowned Assassin of the Zodiac Kinship on her trail.
She can't escape him... but it's possible he can't escape her either.
An unlikely alliance is formed, but when the one thing that matters to Lark is ripped away from her in the ultimate betrayal, she'll stop at nothing to take her revenge. Even if it rips out what's left of her heart.
Small town girl in a big(ger) city. I live with Justin, my partner of 7 years, our rescue dog Ellie and our rescue cat, Cinders.
I grew up playing hockey and competitive baseball, and I spent a few years riding horses competitively. Now, I read, write and play video games while enjoying my career in healthcare.
I live almost exclusively on caffeine and cereal and wonder why my stomach hurts, much to my partner’s exasperation.
This needs another round of editing, I can see where the author is going with it but the characters and dialogue just feel really awkward and things weren’t flowing.
“My darling Lark. You’ve no idea how monstrous I can be.”
Fae, elemental magic, spice, curses, and a plot that hooks you instantly and leaves you wanting more!
This had me feeling so many things. There were so many quotes and lines that had me actually laughing out loud. I love the banter and the dynamic between Lark and Locke. This book is was so intriguing and kept me guessing and I can not recommend it enough.
Thank you for much to Holly L. Hamilton for the advanced copy of “Of Curses and Contempt”.
I received an arc in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to the author and publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
I think this book has a lot of potential. The magic system was easy to follow. I loved the ‘zodiac’ casts for different fae courts. I also loved the monsters descriptions, as well as the magic- earth, water, fire, air. I thought this was a nice spin on fae folk.
I also loved the enemies to lovers back to enemies to lovers.
I think what I didn’t like was the predictability. I could tell where the book was going almost the entire time.
The other thing, the main female character (Lark) is very emotional. She has a deep sense of rejection since early childhood. Instead of looking inward to heal and grow, she looks outward into ‘friends’ or even the guy that she’s into at the time. (Which we see in flash backs and in the present)
When she is rejected further, she almost always spirals or drinks. I began to cringe every time someone hurt her feelings or rejected her, because I knew she was about to make a rash decision (like storming off).
Then there is the love interest: Locke, the assassin for the Scorpio queen. I guess he was supposed to be a pretty tough guy. The reader gets a cinnamon roll though, as he is very sweet to Lark. I wished the reader could have seen some of his dark side a little bit. Instead of it just being described.
And there is the case of the love interests- I didn’t know it could happen, somehow there is both slow burn and insta love. I don’t know how I feel about it or how to describe it.
Overall, this book was okay for me.
I know this is the author’s first novel, and I just want to point out that I can see the hard work and research that was put into this book.
I am a VERY picky reader. So, even though this book didn’t completely hit the mark for me, I can see why other readers would enjoy it. 💜
Okay, first off, I wanted to point out that the magic system was really easy for me to understand. I liked how the zodiac signs played into it and found it to be unique, which I love for a fantasy read. With fantasy being one of the main book genres I tend to read, you can see a lot of the repeating themes, but I was really excited to feel a different vibe with this book—something new I thought to myself while reading Of Curses and Contempt
It was also easy for me to connect with the characters, they weren't my favorite of all time, but I got along with their vibe, and their story kept me entertained which I always find really important when rating my books. I want to feel like I'm a part of their conversations and put in the middle of the action so I feel like the author did a good job of making the reader feel included and used good descriptions to really help the reader connect to the characters and their world. I don’t know about you guys, but I read to escape and this read was an easy one to escape into.
Another thing about fantasy that sometimes people fall short on is worldbuilding, but like I said before, it was a straightforward type of layout to follow. I never really got confused or had to flip back through to figure out what exactly was happening.
I laughed out loud a few times, I really liked the banter between the two main characters, I saw where some people had a hard time relating to our MFC but I actually enjoyed her, especially compared to some of the other MFCs I've encountered recently.
Overall if you are looking for a place to start with reading fantasy, I would recommend this one to ease into the journey of the fae, mystic lands, and magic.
Absolutely LOVED the elemental magic mixed with the Zodiac signs as people!
Lark discovers powers that were previously hidden from her and sets out to get them under control so she can help take down the ruling crazy lady.
She is quite an emotional character, which gets tedious at times, but is also understandable based on how she was raised. She goes through so much growth by the end and I look forward to seeing her get even stronger in the second book as she finally understands her worth!
Some tropes include: -Fae -Elemental Magic -Found family -Enemies to lovers to enemies -Fated Mates -Anxiety and trauma rep
Y’all to say I ate this book up and left zero crumbs would be an understatement….literally consumed all the way through the last line! This is a new book fav and new author fav! It’s got slow burn, forced proximity, magic, curses, turmoil, intrigue, some world building, smart, snarky, heart of gold, will of steel FMC, flirtatious, cunning powerful, touch her and 💀 yet semi cinnamon roll MMC! Read the trigger warnings on this book/series though some hard topics that may not appeal. So excited for book two off to read that now!
I received an arc for writing a review, This book has you hooked from the beginning!
Not only can you relate and sympathize for the characters, you feel like your part of the fight! I can't wait to see what comes of Locke, lark and all the knights of the court!.. I can't believe this is H.L Hamiltons first book! Waiting in anticipation for book#2!
This book was so good! I could not put it down. I wish I had the next book immediately after finishing this one. The emotional roller coaster this book took me on was crazy. I laughed, cried, and smiled so much.
If you enjoy: 🖤Fae 🖤Magic 🖤Enemies to lovers 🖤Unexpected twists 🖤Curses 🖤Strong FMC You need to check it out!
Firstly, I’ll start by saying I don’t give 5 stars to many books as I reserve them for solely for books that completely blow me away. However, imo Of Curses & Contempt deserves a solid 3 ⭐️ !
Although I wish there had been a little more scene setting in the beginning of the book (for example, description of where Lark and her father live, their circumstances, some context to her life so far etc), I did love how quickly the story picks up! H L Hamilton does a great job of drawing you in and making you feel the urgency of Larks first task of finding a special flower to save her fathers life & the prophecy scene 🤌🏻
A special mention to Locke, the gorgeous MMC! I loved his snarky personality & the banter between him and Lark had me giggling throughout 😃
The FMC, Lark is a capable, bad ass heroine who isn’t afraid to do what it takes for those she loves 💗 she is no wallflower for sure! Her character has real depth and I felt like I was going along this journey with her.
This book has a lovers to enemies to lovers trope & I 👏 am 👏 here 👏 for 👏 it 👏
Overall, this book was a great read and I’m looking forward to book 2 (especially after that cliffhanger!!!!) 😍
I found it interesting that the ruling fae were named after the zodiac signs and the courts were named after the 4 elements.
I instantly love the world and character building in this book. I didn’t feel like anything was forced. I love the fact that even though our FMC( Lark) is a young adult she wasn’t obnoxious 😆 naturally our MMC ( Locke) has a few hundred years on her.
Lark had a rough go at life from the start being the only fae in her village Poplar Hollow and the Water Court without an elemental power. Her father and family friend Elden were all she had in Poplar Hollow. Her peers in school and teachers did miss an opportunity to horrible and do unspeakable things just because Lark was without powers. Until one day she embarked on an unexpected adventure to help her father, and everything changed.
This book was filled with so many grammatical errors, redundant clauses, and tense issues it was completely unreadable.
Seriously, I couldn't make it past chapter 2 it was that bad, and I TRIED.
I understand that being a new author means you have a learning curve, and that self-publishing means you don't have access to the resources big publishing houses do. However, AI can be a decent grammar editor at the very least. There were issues that even a teenager would have easily noticed.
The issues were so glaringly obvious that this reader was left feeling like the author had no respect for the audience. It was tremendously disappointing.
Amazing debut novel by this Canadian! It's hard to put out a fantasy novel that can live up to the big ones out there like ACOTAR. I think she did it! Love the story, the enemies to lovers and the magic system! Can't wait to read what's next for Lark and Locke.
READERS: IF YOU LIKE FANTASY, ROMANCE, ZODIACS, AND ELEMENTAL MAGIC, GIVE THIS BOOK A TRY!
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author and first and foremost I want to say thank you to H. L. Hamilton for giving me the opportunity to read their book! I want to give an honest review of what I thought of this book (while avoiding spoilers because I hate when I get a book ruined), and I'm giving it 3 Stars.
Hamilton's writing style reminded me a lot of SJM and Alex Aster (authors of ACOTAR and Lightlark). There was a lot that I liked about this book: -ENEMIES TO LOVERS, which is ALWAYS a hit in my book - this book was steamy with a capital S. if you are a fan of those types of scenes (I know I am) then pick up this book - the magic system based off of the zodiac signs and the elements! this was really creative and kind of reminded me of Avatar the Last Airbender! - Lark as a strong FMC. As a woman, I love reading FMC written by women. I love when seemingly "normal" FMC find the power (magical and/or otherwise) they have inside of them, and Lark is an excellent example of this.
However, there were some things that I didn't like about this book - it feels very heavily inspired by ACOTAR (which is one of my favorite series) but the execution didn't move me the same way. The beginning was very fast paced and we meet the love interest almost immediately. I wish there had been some more background and content before the immediate problem. - I felt like I could predict what was going to happen before it happened - the chapters were very long
I think the concept around this book series is fantastic but the execution didn't quite hit the spot for me as a fantasy reader. It definitely has the elements that I like, but there were times where I wasn't enjoying it as much as I wish that I would.
HOWEVER, another review mentioned that this is the first book from this author, and I think Hamilton has done an excellent job with OCAC. I will be keeping an eye out for the next works in this series and any other books Hamilton may come out with.
another note to the readers: pick up this book! based on reviews it seems to be mostly a hit with only a couple misses. you might love it! it just wasn't fully for me, and that's okay because I am just one opinion!
While I love the fantasy genre, I often struggle to find books that are well written with a very compelling plot. In the fantasy realm, world-building is extremely crucial. Providing an excessive amount of information at one go can be very overwhelming. However, I was really pleased to see that H.L. Hamilton has not only met but exceeded all of my expectations with her debut novel. The introduction of the new world was gradual, allowing readers like myself to get better accustomed to the hierarchy and intricate world of the fae without feeling overwhelmed.
Lark is a magicless fae who embarks on a journey through a deadly forest to retrieve the only plant that can cure her father, the only family she has left. Along the way, she encounters Locke, the Crowned Assassin. As she witnesses a murder committed by the Queen, she becomes a threat, and Locke promises a swift death as soon as she delivers the cure. However, unbeknowst to Lark, Locke harbors secret intentions, which ultimately leads to a series of events that reveal her extraordinary magic.
Together they try to unlock the full extent of Lark's powers and hone them to take down the Queen before she can take down Lark to cure herself of a curse.
The events happening throughout the book brought tears to my eyes at times. Locke and Lark's relationship felt genuine, and their journey gripped me from start to finish. From witty banter to snarky comments, their story goes from enemies to lovers to enemies to lovers. Lark, despite her traumatic past as a magicless fae, emerges as resilient, whose character learns to stand her ground in a world where she was once deemed an easy prey. Her character portrays many raw emotions that will resonate with readers. Locke, on the other hand, is charismatic, witty and fiercely protective of Lark. Despite being very secretive, his motives are always in Lark's best interest, which makes him all the more endearing.
Overall, this was a very beautiful and well-written Romantasy. I highly recommend this book to the Romantasy lovers. It does end on a cliffhanger, but the next book is definitely worth the wait!
First, I need to say that I was lucky enough to receive an ARC from H. L. Hamilton - so first and foremost thank you for that, I really appreciated the opportunity. 😍
My advice for my fellow readers: Pick up this book and read it - you will not regret it!!!!! 😃
As for the story:
I really enjoyed the world-building system (Fae, elemental magic, spice and good banter!) and the magic system.
The story flows well and it is an easy read, you get to the plot quickly and it's not dull.
I loved both MCs, I find Lark (FMC) a really relatable (sometimes a bit emotional) and strong-ass heroine and I feel that there's a lot to learn still from Locke, (whom I found hilarious with his snarky personality).
I love their banter, their relationship and their paved way from enemies to lovers (which of course is my favourite trope). ✨
I am upset though because I did not see that cliffhanger and now I have to wait for book 2.
In general, it was an excellent read, since it has some of my preferred tropes as well as the fantasy build-up. I think it should be highlighted that this is the Author's 1st book so there are things she can improve, which is the reason why I don't give it 5 stars.
In the beginning, I felt that everything happened really fast and then it almost slowed to a stop - but I understand why she did it. I think some of the chapters felt a bit long at times and I could sometimes predict what was going to happen (but maybe it's just my mind that's used to thinking a lot of plots in fantasy stories), nonetheless, I feel that the Author really did an excellent job and the book it's great I will definitely keep up with her next works.
Thank you once again, H. L. Hamilton, for the opportunity! Will definitely read the 2nd one!!! 💗
Of Curses and Contempt – Book One / The Curses Duet H.L. Hamilton
I found a Hidden Gem and 5-Star Read with this one!! I cannot believe I did not know about this book!! Was I living under a rock?! I was introduced to H.L. Hamilton via one of my Book Clubs and I was so, so happy I was.
This book checked all my Fantasy/Romantasy boxes: - Elemental Magic enhanced by Zodiac symbols and myth!! - Enemies to Lover - a Romantasy of Fae - Found Family and Friendship - Outcast/Rejected FMC who becomes the hero - Morally gray MMC who is sent to hunt her and return her to the EVIL Queen.
I fell in love with Lark and Locke! I related with as she struggled with her self-worth, her experiences as a child with no power and what she endured. And Locke, what a beautiful book boyfriend he turned out to be! A supposed Villain who was so yummy the entire time his story was unfolding for us. In spite of Lark’s experiences which were horrible and violent, I felt all the feels with this read: sadness, loss, happiness, love, self-hate, despair, doubt, anger, lust EVERYTHING was on these pages. The story was so well told that the minor edit errors didn’t matter to me. You still understood what was happening between Lark, Locke and all their friends as they traveled; trained with each other and tried to figure out exactly what they were to each other. The heated scenes between Locke and Lark were also delicious! I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but this was a FAST read because I could not put it down. I devoured the book in 2 nights and would have finished it in one day I think If I didn’t have to work! LOL.
Again, I absolutely loved it and cannot WAIT to read the 2nd book in this duet. H.L. Hamilton has become one of my auto-buy authors.
Being my first real fantasy novel, I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. I was expecting fae, magic, war... but what I found was so much more.
I was instantly gripped by Lark's task. I felt like Bastian following Atreyu & Artax as they hunted for the Nothing in The Neverending Story. I followed her as she searched for the aching cress. I shivered in fear when Queen Scorpio showed herself. I felt my stomach drop when I heard the prophecy. I swooned when the Crowned Assassin appeared. I snickered at the absolutely massive balls Lark had to stand up to him. I love her.
Who doesn't love a dark haired enemy turned lover turned enemy??? Locke was brooding, protective, secretive, loving... OMG that man.
As a true blue romance reader and author, I look for the nuance, the small gestures that signify there is something more there and H.L. Hamilton executed it perfectly! Then, like the heart stabber she is... I was hit with BETRAYAL of the highest order that left me spinning for reasons WHY this was happening and that it MUST be a trick.
The world-building, and the political, socio-economical, and magic systems were fantastic. H.L. Hamilton pulled from lore and added her own twists to craft a uniquely personal story. Almost every woman I know has had similar experiences to Lark, and I felt seen, validated, and honoured to connect with a fictional badass like her.
Thank you to the author for the ARC. I will be buying the hardcover... and I want it signed because you are going somewhere and I cannot wait to follow you along the way! :)
OH! Last thing! THAT COVER IS AMAZING!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE!
First of all I want to say thank you so much for giving me an arc copy!
This book is incredible. It hits all my boxes for what makes a book enjoyable. If you like fantasy, romance, magic, fae, dark curses and lovers to enemies to lovers this is the book for you. I seriously can't praise it enough. If you're a fan of ACOTAR this book has similar vibes while still feeling entirely like it's own story.
Lark is written in a way where her flaws make her feel real. You can easily understand why she makes the choices she does. Her emotion is so raw I often found myself feeling along with her. Despite her flaws, I found her really likeable. It's easy to sympathize with her and despite everything she's willing to do whatever she needs to, even if it puts her in harm's way. I loved reading the romance between Lark and Locke play out. Their banter was enjoyable and you could feel their relationship grow and change as the story progressed.
I adore the magic system in this book, the separation of elements and courts is really interesting. I found myself really sinking into this story and desperately wanting to know what happens next. The world is described in a way that makes it so easy to imagine. The world building is incredible.
Overall this book is easily in the top 3 I've read this year. It ends on a cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more. I can't wait for book two!
I want to give this a 4.5 stars...but since goodreads doesn't have that option I'll put it at 4 stars.
I've been following Holly (The Author) on tiktok for quite some time. When she was teasing this book I was getting super intrigued. 👌 as soon as the arc application opened up I decided to give it a shot. I have never been an Arc reader so I wa Ted to try my luck. Low and behold I was sent a beautiful ebook copy of the book. It was a great read.
First off I love a bad ass MC. Our Heroine is great and I LOVE how snarky and brave she is. I love how she loved the people special in her life. She is someone I aspire to be.
The MMC Locke, oh he reminds me why I'm not fully gay. He is a great God. He has sass and whit and frankly is a great pusher for Lark to find how truly amazing she is.
This book follows Lark on a magical journey of love, friendship, magic, and strength. It ends on a cliffhanger which makes me super excited to buy this book and pre-order the second.
I love the enemies to lovers trope. I also love romantasy books.
Overall this book was a great ride, and I am truly impressed by Holly's debut and she's fastly becoming another one of my favourite authors.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this amazing book before others.
I was given an arc in exchange for my honest review. I’m giving the book 4 stars because overall the book checks off a lot of boxes for me as a reader. Obviously the arc is not a finished copy, but, for me it was a bit of struggle to get through as the chapters were painstakingly long. I’m the type of reader that prefers multiple short chapters versus a few very very long ones. Some of the writing fell short for me as well. I felt like the beginning was rushed a bit. I wish we knew more about Lark’s mom, and I wish there was some more effort on the enemies to lovers trope. I feel like that was rushed as well. It wasn’t a slow build in the beginning they just fell for each other pretty early on and then when things take a turn it becomes a very SLOW build. There were times where it worked for me and other times where it fell flat. Lark has so much potential, and the fact that she’s overcome so much and is still empathetic to those who do not deserve her empathy, makes me root for her even more. Despite the few things I didn’t like about the writing, ultimately I liked the book and am thoroughly looking forward to the second. I truly hope Lark and Locke are able to overcome their curse and that Lark reaches that bad ass MFC energy I know she has.

I loved the characters and I loved how I really felt like I was getting to know the author through the book. When Lark described how she felt, I could feel her emotions through the page and I cried multiple times. I love when an author can truly tug at your heartstrings and you can relate to a characters emotions so easily. You could really tell the author had experienced the emotions before by the way it just made you cry and want to hug the character.
It has spice, (amazing scenes if you are into that stuff), it has enemy to lover, banter, Zodiac elements, Courts, black magic, curses, love and all the great things that just make it a hard book to put down. The writing flowed well, I never got bored. I would have read it in one sitting if life didn't get in the way.
I'm opening a bookstore in 2024 and when I tell you, I JUMPED at the opportunity to stock Of Curses and Contempt when the store opens and have no doubts this will be an easy seller and i'll constantly have to stock up. Buy this book. It's worth it!
Conclusion: I highly recommend Of Curses and Contempt . I know I am already looking forward to Of Hexes and Hatred. Just run now, go buy it. No other words needed. ❤️
I loved the concept of this book with the characters and the world building! The banter between multiple characters in this book was funny, and I found myself giggling a couple times!
The relationship between Lark and Locke started off as enemies to lovers then back to enemies to lovers which made their relationship electric and fun, they had so much chemistry that it just made sense for them to be together.
I did however find myself wishing there was more character growth with Lark. I felt like she relied to heavily on people around her for happiness and she ran with first sight of rejection. But given her past experiences growing up I can see the hesitance. She never had someone to show her how to love herself, only to fight for herself.
My only true complaint for this book was the LONG chapters. I like to finish chapters before putting my books down, and I found I had to put this one down often in the middle of a chapter. Which drove me nuts.
There was some grammatical and spelling errors, but all and all this was a super easy read.
This was my first H.L Hamilton novel, and I thoroughly enjoyed her stories.. and I can’t wait to jump into book two “ Of Hexes & Hatred” .
I was lucky to be given this book as an ARC and all thoughts are my own. I really loved this book. It was fast paced, the way magic works in the world is interesting and I like the overlap of how general magic works compared to specialised magic.
The intertwining of star signs as the leaders of the magical courts is fun and I like seeing how that plays out in their personalities amongst the other Zodiac members.
I think the relationships in this are good and I can’t wait to see how they develop further in book 2. However in my opinion what makes this a good read is the background of Lark.
H.L Hamilton does a good job showing the effects bullying can have on a person and what the cruelty of others causes. This provides the motivation around the FMC and explains her behaviour even if crushingly so.
The ending also leaves me wanting more, it is a cliff hanger just not one I normally deal with as it doesn’t deal with betrayal but in this case hope (although I am afraid book two will shatter that). Either way a 5 star read and H.L Hamilton is such a engaging and authentic author I can wait for her next book!
Okay first with the good. The plot had me hooked and guessing, I enjoyed the storyline immensely. I will definitely read the next book when it is out.
I enjoyed the characters, particularly the character development of the FMC Lark. It not an enemies to lovers book, despite Larks intense desire to hate the MMC Locke. It was too easy to see the good in the character of Locke, even from the first meeting, so you knew he wasn't a bad guy.
Unfortunately, a let down for this book was the writing. At times it just didn't feel very good and the descriptions seemed too simplistic and almost out of character for the narrator. There were also a fair few mistakes throughout which did effect how I enjoyed reading the book.
Overall, it had a really good book with an interesting plot and the world building wasn't too bad. I would like to finish the story and see what happens to the characters, and also continue to see the authors growth as they write further books.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Wow. Book one in the duet, and I was lucky enough to receive an ARC. Now the impatient wait for book two commences. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Lark is a self-aware strong FMC even when she deals with her bad emotions, I loved this though as someone with anxiety I felt many scenes worked so well with her overthinking and joining the links up to make a story that worked worse for her. She came from a place of bad trauma and instantly jumps to the same conclusions- it was easy to do so.
Locke, oh Locke my crowned prince. - book boyfriend right here; I need one. Through the middle with the great secret you wanted to hate him - it was very hard to.
The world building was great, so many courts, so many positions, the forest surrounding you and the little towns. Loc Valen was a town I enjoyed immensely.
I am very thankful to have received this book as an Arc in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book, and can't wait to get my hands on the finished final copy
I loved this book! From the characters, to the story and the world itself. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy, but I'll absolutely be adding this bad boy to my shelf when it formally comes out
We have fae, magic, a little bit of spicy spice and some witty banter that had me blushing and chuckling to myself throughout. Add in the lovers to enemies to lovers again and we have a great story!
Lark is a bit of a softie in the beginning but comes into her own as we get closer to the end and I'll take that in my FMC any day. Her opposite is the MMC... Mr. Locke. Mr kind of temperamental and moody but also charming and delicious
The world was easy to imagine thanks to the authors worldbuilding and description and it helped me fully immerse myself into the story which I love to do with my reads
It also ended on quite the cliffhanger ... which I have a love hate relationship with because it keeps me intrigued but also I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Either way, I loved it and I can't wait for book 2 xo
