⚠️Triggers: Graphic Drug Abuse, Drug abuse leading to miscarriage, Domestic Violence ⚠️

Summery

Lynn and Jimmy's marriage has been dying for years. Fallen into decay like everything else in their lives. Lies and hidden secrets have consumed them. She has sunk into routines and work, and he sunk into a bottle. Turning a bad marriage into an abusive one.

Lynn is in her 50s. She is dying. Cancer is spreading through her and left her with only a few months. She knows some things have to change. As luck would have it, she won the lottery! 5 million dollars. She has decided not to share it with Jimmy. She has plans for the money. Plans that don't include him. Plans so that she can die with peace. But how does she stop him, and who is trying to stop her?

My Thoughts

This book started off very engaging.

I quickly felt for Lynn from the beginning. Trapped with an abusive husband, self blaming for the abuse, just wanting to do some good before she died. She was easy to care about.
Jimmy, on the other hand, was a complete waste of a human. Vile, abusive, drunk who couldn't care less how his wife felt as long as he was getting his way. I hated him.
I feel like that's a testament to the author that I was able to care about and hate characters so throughly. Even the neighbor, Rose, was realistic and well written.

I could have done without the graphic description of drug use. It did nothing for the plot. It very easily could have just eluded to it without going into the details of tying off and plunging the syringe, euphoria, and the misery. It was over the top and too much. I found it disturbing and unnecessary.
I get that her drug abuse led to her miscarriage, which led to her current domestic situation. I'm not saying that it doesn't belong in the story. Just not is such graphic details.

Since this is an arc, I'm going to overlook the grammatical errors. I can't overlook the constant jumping of timelines. I got whip lash trying to keep up. Never quite knowing if it was past or present. I found it distracting and disjointed.

The plot became a hard to follow roller coaster with an almost laughable ending. I did finish it. I did enjoy parts of it. It desperately needs a strong edit. It has a lot of potential, but it is just not there yet. At least not for me.

I received an advanced review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Definitely a wild thriller story! There are a lot of twists and intriguing parts of the story that I didn’t see coming! Towards the middle/end, the story slowed a bit, but got back on track with more suspenseful action! There was a lot that went on in this story and I quickly had to order book 2, Lottery of Lies, to continue on and see what happens!

disappointing

I was disappointed by the ending. So much build up and drama and it felt like falling off a cliff.

Lynn has won 5 million dollars in the lottery. But she doesn’t want to tell her abusive husband, Jimmy. She plans to donate the money to charity. She is sick and doesn’t want him getting his hands on any of the money. But then the threats start.

There are more layers to this than I’ve mentioned. I’m not sure how much I want to give away (even if much of it is revealed early on, and I think much more is said in some of the other reviews).

Lynn is a very unreliable narrator. I thought all the feelings she went through after winning (about winning) probably were legitimate, but stacked on top of that was all the abuse she’s suffered over decades. I wanted to know what was going to happen next. There was a surprise/twist near the end, but then it ended so abruptly, so that was disappointing, as it seems it is meant to continue in another book. If it wasn’t for the (non?) ending, I might have rated it a bit higher.

This book was amazing! It had me interested from the very first page, I found it hard to put down and at no point did I predict where the book was heading. I alternated from liking and disliking the main character all the way through. Shocking ending. I have a few unanswered questions which I hope are answered in the next book. Or the one after that. I definitely want to read both.

This is the first time I have read a book by this author and I had no idea she was an indie author until it was stated at the end.

"I'd rather die than let Jimmy discover my lottery win."
From the 1st line, the reader is captivated to learn Lynn Miller's story. Within the words, desperation oozes. Should Lynn keep this secret from her husband, James Corrigan? Why would a woman need to keep this newfound wealth a secret?

With the turn of each page, I was more captivated by Lynn Miller as beneath each action; there is grief from the past, an unanswered question of an event that haunts her mind. She has endured so many years, and time is running out.

The pace of twists is gripping, suspenseful, and intriguing. As Lynn navigates every action, there are secrets, deceit, and angst beyond measure. Is this woman at the end of life due to domestic abuse or a different reason? Has she endured domestic abuse, and the lottery win finally offers the possibility of escape? Has this woman become paranoid after winning the lottery?

Not for the faint of heart, this psychological thriller is graphic and could be non-fiction.

When reading ARCs, I do not comment nor consider needed proofreading/copy editing during the award of star ratings. However, although a win from LibraryThing, I borrowed the new release on Kindle Unlimited, and multiple errors were distracting during the reading experience. The opinions expressed in the review are my own.

Because this was an advance copy I did not allow the numerous grammatical errors to affect my review. The story was quick and compelling. Lynn, critically ill, is an abused woman by her bully husband, Jimmy who is a vile excuse for a man. I was interested to learn than in many places, including New England where this story is set, it's compulsory to make public, lottery winnings. Lynn living on borrowed time becomes a lottery winner and at the same time starts receiving bizarre, anonymous notes and what she perceives to be a voodoo doll. 25 years earlier because of her heroine addiction she lost her baby.
An enjoyable story though I found Lynn annoying and the ending was unexpected. I am leaving this review voluntarily. 4 stars

The synopsis and cover of this book pulled me in. Unfortunately, I was not impressed by the story line. This was not much of a thriller. We follow Lynn, who won the lottery. She has a history of drug abuse and her husband is controlling and abusive. She becomes paranoid and believes that he husband is going to kill her her for her lottery winnings. The ending left a lot to be desired. The fact that her "long lost" daughter who knows nothing about her life suddenly chastises Lynn for not leaving her husband just seemed inconsistent with the salutation. There are also multiple grammatical mistakes.

Lynn is a normal woman who believes that all of her dreams have just come true. She has won the lottery, a sum of 5 million dollars to be exact, so what could go wrong after that right? After announcing to her husband that she has won, he becomes elated and starts making all kinds of plans for their future. Lynn however is terrified. After contacting a lawyer to decide how best to proceed, Lynn is thrust into the limelight because her state has a law that lottery winners cannot remain anonymous. After Lynn and her husband James appear on the news strange things begin to happen to Lynn, she starts receiving threatening messages and items left on her doorstep by what she can only assume is a stalker.

Lynn struggles to convince James that she is in any danger at all, and after contacting the police and realizing that she in fact does not have any real evidence, she is left wondering if she is just crazy and her failing health and the strain and stress of her terrible marriage are taking more of a toll on her than she can physically and emotionally handle.

I enjoyed this book. I liked the writing style and the storyline was easy to follow, even when the main character shifted the story to a memory from her past, it was easy to tell what was going on and I didn’t get lost. I can’t really say that I liked the characters, because I think that they were things about both of them that were meant to be unlikable. James was a terrible person with what I found to be no redeeming qualities at all. At first I thought that Lynn was just a weak person who at sometimes I didn’t really like either because of the things she had done and her seemingly being unable to do things by herself or for herself, but in the end some of my views on her shifted. Some of her actions really shocked me!

I was left with a lot of unanswered questions, like the Private Investigator and the Real Estate Agent and their sudden silence and seeming disappearance when Lynn needed answers, but maybe those questions are addressed in book 2.

Even though there is a second book, I feel that the ending was a bit abrupt and that I would have liked a bit more explanation, or maybe even an epilogue that would lead into the next book. There were a lot of turns that the story took that I didn’t see coming at all and I did enjoy the unpredictability of that. Overall I enjoyed the book and would read the second one to see what happens to Lynn and how she ends up once she has finally collected her winnings and hopefully life works out the way she wants it to! I am also interested in reading other books by this new to me author!

Lottery of Secrets is fast paced dark tale full of deceit, betrayal, violence, drama, dark lies and secrets and so much more. It is as intriguing as it is intense, and the tension and suspense is palpable and have you questioning everything.
Nadija has done a good job of bringing together carefully woven threads that makes this a heart pounding psychological thriller. She cleverly guides the reader through a barrage of twists and turns that keep you on the edge right to the end as you try to work out what is going on.
Lynn is supposed to be living the dream but instead she is struggling and living a nightmare and no longer knows who to trust. She finds herself ensnared in a game of cat and mouse. She no longer knows what is real and what is not. Her a’hole of a Husband thinks he's going to get her money. A stalker is obsessed with her, and she is fighting for her life in more than one way.
I wasn’t sure about the characters in the beginning. I wanted to shake some sense into the woman, and I wanted to snot the Husband, but I guess that is a sign of good writing to bring out so much emotion in the reader and the intrigue was enough to keep me glued to the pages. OMG by the time I got to the end; well, what can I say!
Fear, jealousy, paranoia, angst, anguish are just some of the things the author throws our way whilst following Lynn on her dark and twist path. There are some sensitive topics in this story, but it comes together nicely.
I am now eagerly awaiting the next book. Bring it on!

Oh boy, this one, it took me a while to review this one because I did NOT like it much at all and it's harder for me to review books that rub me the wrong way like this one did.

As I sit here thinking how to write some kind of little review, I'm remembering the book and reading it and it makes me feel uncomfortable. I wished that it had more content and/or trigger warnings or something. It bugged me.

If I had known how it would be talked about and in the story about miscarriage, drugs and abuse aka domestic violence, I would not have read it.

Anyway, it was about Lynn and James/Jimmy and how their marriage was falling apart and a disaster. It was about how Jimmy treated Lynn like crap and how Lynn had cancer too. Oh and Lynn was suspicious about James, who was controlling and a jerk and if he was going to kill her or whatnot to get her lottery winnings after he found out.

Then as a bizarro added thing to the the story, Lynn gets in touch with a long lost daughter, which was kind of weird and confusing and they have some weird conversations and relationship.

This story was just weird and rubbed me in the wrong way.

Maybe someone else will like it, but this is not for me. Thanks to LibraryThing and Pioneer Publishing for letting me read and review this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Lottery of Secrets is a psychological thriller full of action, suspense, angst, danger, mystery, intrigue, drama, and secrets. The story centers around the character of Lynn who has just won the lottery and is dreaming of how she will start a new life with her winnings. She is currently living in a rundown house with her abusive husband and wants to leave but has been unsure how. When Lynn discovers she has won the lottery she grapples with the decision of whether she should tell her husband or if she should just start a new life somewhere else. Winning the lottery does not change her life the way in which Lynn had hoped and dreamed that it would. Instead, she finds her life spiralling out of control as she receives anonymous notes, and her past comes back to haunt her. This book takes some twists and turns that kept me reading to see what happened next. Lynn is a character that is easily likable and relatable. Suffering from an illness and living with an abusive husband left me hoping she would be able to get the happily ever after she deserved. The book ends with a cliffhanger, and I anxiously await the next book in this series.

This is a thrilling exploration of sudden wealth turned nightmare. Initially, Lynn's life-changing lottery win sets a stage of hope and endless possibilities. However, this newfound fortune quickly morphs into a sinister curse as an elusive stalker begins to haunt her every move.

The narrative skillfully captures the escalating tension as Lynn's desperation to protect herself is met with skepticism from her husband, James. This doubt strains their relationship, unraveling a web of paranoia and mistrust. The revelation of hidden family secrets adds a deeper layer of complexity, making readers question the true nature of Lynn's peril.

The suspense builds gradually, keeping readers on edge as Lynn navigates the treacherous waters of suspicion and danger. The author expertly blurs the lines between friend and foe, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty that propels the story forward.

This is a gripping tale of suspense that explores the darker side of fortune and the resilience of the human spirit. It is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers and anyone who enjoys a well-crafted story of danger, trust, and survival.

My second book by Nadija and would recommend it.

"Lottery of Secrets: A Psychological Thriller with a Shocking Twist" by Nadija Mujagic is a well-constructed thriller that keeps you on the edge throughout the story. The plot is intricate and engaging, which makes the readers eager to find out what happens next. The book follows the course of Lynn, who wins the lottery (no spoilers here, it happens early in the book) and the outcomes of her windfall. Throughout, Lynn strengthens and weakens connections with her family.

As the story progresses, the characters' secrets and hidden agendas are revealed, leading to shocking revelations that change the course of their lives.

The author's writing style is concise and straightforward, which makes the book an easy read. I read a lot of psychological thrillers, and was pleasantly surprised at the twist. Overall, "Lottery of Secrets: A Psychological Thriller with a Shocking Twist" is an excellent book that keeps readers hooked until the end.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

1. I couldn’t stop reading the book! I was hooked and had to know what happened.

2. The writing is great, the detail, the flow.

3. Great twists & turns… you can’t guess where it’s going.

It was. 4 star until the end. 4 star because of the above reasons, not a 5 because of some of the content that’s troubling & seems to be acceptable in the book.

It went to a 3 star when it ended abruptly. There was no closure, so many questions left unanswered. Maybe an epilogue could have summarized what happened after the last chapter. Right now I’m just mad because I have so many questions. The story just ended. I actually flipped through the preview of the sample book to see if maybe this was a series and it picked up where the other left off.

Overall, I’m not mad I read it only disappointed in the way it ended or lack of ending.

Lottery of Secrets by Nadija Mujagic. I extend thanks to the author and publisher for the Advanced Reader Copy that was gifted to me.

Not sure what I expected when I picked up this book, but it has exceeded my thoughts. Start with a Lottery Scratch Winner who has quite the backstory, add in a dysfunctional marriage and stir (aka agitate) vigorously and what do you get? A psychological thriller, that's what you get. The author does a excellent job of creating the mental picture for the reader of the situations Lynn finds herself. Even the emotions are well described, allowing for them to almost be felt. As the storyline continued, I found myself vacillating between the mental stability of all the characters. What is going on? Tons of twists and turns bring the reader to the end in complete confusion, of the best kind. I'm still not sure what happened. I do know that I absolutely enjoyed this more then I expected.

This is my first book by this author and I really enjoyed reading this book. I can honestly say that I look forward to reading more from this author. This was a pretty suspenseful and wild story. The author had a unique way to add quite a bit of twists and turns that make you feel like you're on this journey with the main character. This is about how winning the lottery may not be all that it is cracked up to be, it just might plain deadly. I enjoyed how the characters pulled me into the story with ease and it didn't take awhile to get into the story. They had me turning pages fast just to see what would happen next. I enjoyed watching the growth of the characters as well as the plot throughout the story. This is a fast paced, action filled, suspense, page turner that you don’t want to miss!! I look forward to reading other books by this author! I highly recommend this book!!

Lottery of Secrets follows Lynn who wins $5m on a lottery scratch card. Living in a deprived area with an abusive partner called Jimmy, this money could change her life, however a terminal illness is implied and she decides to use the money to do good. Jimmy is a vile character, and is written well as that is exactly how he comes across; violent and money orientated. The book itself was written well, the description was controlled and written nicely with no slang and a nice pace and flow. The dialogue largely aligned with the characters and contributed to them being well-rounded and developed, however at times, was stilted and had the opposite effect. I would not have classed this as a thriller, as there was very little action with most of the book being Lynn’s thought processes and memories.

I have thoroughly enjoyed each book I’ve read by this author, and this one followed suit! I love psychological thrillers, so this was right up my alley. I’m really excited to see that it’s the beginning of a series as well because I definitely need more. It’s everyone’s dream to win the lottery, right? We dive into what nightmares could be waiting on the other side of this wonderful dream come true. This book was absolutely riveting, and I read through it in one sitting. I couldn’t read fast enough because I needed to know what happened! It was a rollercoaster of twists and turns, never knowing where we were going to end up. I highly recommend picking this thriller up and going on a crazy ride. I am (not so patiently) waiting for the next book in this series!

Lottery of Secrets
By: Nadija Mujagic

This is such a good book! I will say that I was left with a lot of unanswered questions. I am hoping that there is more to come and everything will fall into place.
This book ends on a cliff hanger but it ends in such away that there is some semblance of closure for a first book. This book moves very quickly and definitely kept me wanting more.
I love the concept for this book. It explores the concept of being careful what you wish for. I mean I don’t know what person doesn’t wish to win the lottery. This book explores the dark side of this reality. It takes you on a roller coaster of an adventure where you definitely are guessing at every turn. I recommend reading this one and cannot wait to read the next book!

This was a great 5 star read filled with twists and turns. The author pulls you right in with her writing and you won’t want to put it down. We get so much suspense, drama, betrayal and so much more. Lynn wins the lottery, but did she really win? She has a mysterious stalker and an abusive husband. All of the characters added a great element to the story, the husband is a piece of crap and made me angry at times. My emotions were all over the place while I was reading. Of course there are some things that may be triggers for some so beware. I look forward to reading more from this author and series. 1-click and get started today.

This was a wild ride for the first book in the Lottery Series! Nadija Mujagic does a fantastic job putting the story together about Lynn. A current victim/survivor of spousal abuse, Lynn wins the lottery, but doesn't want her husband Jimmy to know. In a situation that most of us can only imagine (DV victim / lottery winner), there are thoughts and actions that Lynn takes that are surprising, and perhaps seem unrealistic to those who have not been in that place. Mujagic weaves many other interesting elements into this book, and does it well! I loved the ending, and am looking forward to the next in the series!!

Wow. This novel had me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning. Poor Lynn, beaten and abused by her husband, Jimmy. Not only does she have a rough home life, but she is also dying from cancer when she wins the lottery. I do not want to give away any spoilers, so I will just say that this book did not disappoint when it came to the shock and surprise of the plot.

I may have found one of my new favorite authors for the thriller genre. This was a relatively fast read and I cannot wait to get my hands on part 2!

I enjoyed the first novel in a two-book series. I found that the author did a good job with Lynn. Writing an unreliable narrator isn't easy, and it left just a little bit of doubt in her state of mind. I found her husband appalling, and the author did a great job making me feel angry, sad, and rooting for Lynn on that point alone. I wish there was a little bit more closure, but I understand why she left it on a cliffhanger, with the second book picking up where this one ends. All in all, it's a solid 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5 stars.
