A life shattered by the horrors of relentless violence; but transformed and healed by the greater power of God in Christ. Lina tells her heart-wrenching story of a life of abuse and violence that followed her from the Middle East to Canada. She and her children were victims of relentless verbal and emotional abuse as well as physical and sexual violence. She was threatened with death. She risked her life to protect her children. She was forced to abort one of her children. Despite an appearance of modesty and family values in Lina's Arab-Muslim world, men and women too often look the other way when husbands assault their wives and children. Despite the horrific torture and abuse Lina faced for so many years-even in Canada- God was watching over her. Through a remarkable set of events, once Lina had gained the courage to seek help, God delivered her from domestic slavery and from her bondage to sin. She has also seen all her children make professions of faith. (description from Amazon)
The book tells a powerful story of struggle, and personal growth and pulls the reader into the resolution and her comeback. Lina is an incredible storyteller, making us feel as if we were there. Telling a tale of a woman who marries a Muslim man and then converts to Christianity takes amazing courage.
I love that I can feel Liza's deep down in my soul when reading this book. It brought me through many transformations, along with her. Her writing is so clear and easy to read, yet so complex giving you access directly to her emotions. This book is not just a memoir but a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and the unwavering strength of the human spirit.
I look forward to the possibility of her composing a "part 2" to gain insight into her current situation with her children. :)
This is truly a horror story of a woman's physical, sexual and emotional abuse from birth in Arab countries and later in the US and Canada. As a Christian who turned away from her religion to marry a Muslim who practiced Islam, she lost the comfort of her relationship with God as she denied Christ publicly in a mosque in the US to try to keep peace in her family.
This biography shows the inner thinking processes that stop a woman from realizing she is being abused, that prevent her from seeking help from the police and that blind her to the psychological damage being done to her children.
It is also a story of remarkable God-ordained encounters that led her to becoming born again and becoming involved in a church that knew how to pray. Her lawyers acknowledge the miracles of her husband being convicted of all assault charges, including those which had been dropped because the daughter in the military and unable to attend court; the court accepting fraudulent divorce papers introduced by her husband so that she did not need to file for divorce; the judge granting her full custody of all her children without applying for it or involving her husband; as well as miracles of provision.
But most remarkable is her detailing of the counselling process which unveiled layer after layer of emotional damage that explained her blindness to and acceptance of the abuse in her family. It shows the process by which she was healed emotionally, and in the process was able to ask her children for forgiveness for not stopping the sexual abuse of her children and for not acknowledging and preventing their physical and emotional hurt.
Although we may think there is no excuse for allowing this abuse, she was more abused than her children and was so controlled and dominated that she could not see the truth.
Now she is actively involved in helping other women escape from domestic violence. All her children have become Christians and their relationship is restored.
Sadly, they needed to change their identity to be protected from the death threats of her husband. She is now a happy Canadian, grateful for the support of her country in helping her escape from a life of horror.
Even though it is a book of horror, it is a book of hope and victory.
If anyone wants to understand how to minister to an abused woman who does not even understand that she is being abused, this is a book that is worth reading.
An amazing journey of a Jordanian Christian who married a Muslim. The woman strives all her married life to save her children from terrible abuse from their father and is horribly abused herself. It is a hard story to read but it is wonderful to learn that in the end, she returns to her Christian beliefs and is able to get out from under the thumb of her abusive husband. A must read.
Hard to review such a complex book. You can tell it is written from the heart & that the author is not a professional writer. Hard to understand how Muslim men rationalize their actions & seem to have little love for others. Worth reading.
