Easy Evil

Rate this book
It's a beautiful fall evening in Chicago's suburbs.

The smell of burning leaves floats in the air.

And a judge and her daughter lie shot to death in their driveway.

The young man caught fleeing the scene comes from a family of drug-running gangsters and was dating the girl over her mother's objections. It looks like the county task force is about to make a solid arrest and close the case.

Wisaka Deputy Police Chief Harry Cork has a different take on the murders, however. He thinks they may be the work of a professional, a contract killer, and his investigation leads him from the quiet suburbs... to a billion dollar conspiracy... and to a threat that could destroy his life.

I highly recommend Easy Evil by Doug M. Cummings which is a crime novel that gives and keeps on giving throughout. The story takes place mostly in the suburbs of Chicago. Harry Cork, Wisaka’s deputy chief, is the main character. He became so real to me during the reading, I felt I knew him long before I started this novel.

From the prologue into the first chapter the book holds the reader tightly. Harry Cork suffers a personal loss, but gets even before the reader reaches chapter one. Still not able to put the book down for a minute, chapter one glues you to the story with shocking murders right up front so get your coffee, goodies or whatever before.

As the story unfolds, one gets to know Harry Cork better, one of the most well-developed and interesting characters I’ve read. There are many characters that come into play throughout the book, but not so close that it gets confusing. There’s even a Maine Coon who is Harry’s pet, and a few colorful characters as well like the neighbor of the victims, as well as an attractive reporter.

As the story continues on, it’s full of different pathways to finding the killers. This is when many more characters are introduced, including Russian assassins. The ending will be a shocker unless you are able to guess it early on. When the book ended, I felt as if I had watched a movie.

Meet Harry Cork, a suburban deputy police chief with quite a past and, I hope, an equally exciting future. As for his present, his practiced eye sees more in a murder scene than his colleagues. This leads him to pursue an alternate line of inquiry that takes him into the dark world of multimillion dollar deals and the men who make them.

I like this character. He has issues but, thank goodness, he isn't a drinker like so many other male fiction heroes. There are some appealing supporting characters as well. The crusty Chicago cop,a street kid, and a victim's sister are standouts. There is even a visit from an old friend, Reno McCarthy.

The book moves easily from tense action to quirky dialogue. Descriptions are vivid and entertaining. I turned pages without really thinking about it. Suddenly the book was finished and I was sorry. Now that's a good book.

I read an ARC and just ordered the published version. Looking forward to reading it again.
