Shannon Noelle Long gives us a glimpse into the underground world of Jesus Hollywood, Carolina Skye and Lola Plum: a place full of street-walkers and lawyers, cage fights, diner food, tattoos and amazing shoes.
Jesus Hollywood wasn't always a good guy. He was known for snorting up prodigious lines and breaking hearts. What will he do when he turns out not to be the Lothario he'd always thought? How will he prove he's no longer who he used to be?
Carolina Skye is a girl who was once lost, but has since found herself. In the seven years since she stumbled into her friendships, she and Cowboy Rodeo have danced around each other, but neither of them have ever made a move. She's about ready to give up and move on to greener pastures. Will Cowboy Rodeo man up before she's gone?
And the mysterious Lola Plum is a rockabilly lady of the night trying to find a reason to keep on keepin' on. She's been counselor, lover, and friend to them all. But what set her on this road? And what will keep her walking on this line when they don't need her anymore?
Rarely have I read an independent book that I can say should be picked up by traditional publishers and this truly is one of them. I've been an avid reader for over twenty years and I have read a wide variety of books, from independent to traditional publishing. I have read classics, and I have read pulpy soapy trash (in the best of ways I mean that by)and I say this to give you some background to gauge my review by.
Long's tale of a group of ne'er-do-wells navigating love, and life, is well crafted. These red-lipped retro rockabilly babes are girls that I have known and still know. The bad boys are realistically drawn and every bit as complex as they should be. This is a group that would not be strangers to me, they are pocketed in every major city from coast to coast, and I felt as though I was right along with them watching their struggles through the complexity of discovering who they are and who they love and what they want out of life.
This is a well written novel. The characters are relate-able and fleshed out. You can tell that the author has spent time with these characters, lived with them, knew them inside and out. Time and care has been put into this book and you can feel it. I would also go so far as to say that this novel has a timeless quality. It could have been written in the 90's, it could have been written 10 years ago or 10 years from now. It is not fad driven, this was not written jumping on the bandwagon of what is hot to make money and then move on to the next big idea. This is a novel that dances to the beat of its own drum. This is a book the respects the intelligence of its readers.
This is a book that should not be ignored and lost in the crowd. I hope it does pick up speed. This is an author that deserves to be read far-reaching and make the leap from independent to traditional publishing.
So slip on some Julie London, paint your lips and nails as red as cherry vinyl, put your feet up, have an Old Fashion, Rum and Coke or a Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, and enjoy!
Ms. Long holds nothing back in this tale of adventure in the big city. With relate-able characters and a vivid, easy to visualize story line she has literally set a new bar for independent authors to strive for. You will not regret this purchase.
This was an amazing book. It is so full of life, the characters are perfectly imperfect. I was sad to finish it. SHANNON NOELLE LONG is an author to bookmark.
