Used… Broken… Confused…

It only took one drunken mistake four years ago for Maddie Harrington to learn that when you fully give yourself over to a man, you should never expect anything in return. Since that night, her views on love have become distorted, believing men would only want her for the pleasure her body could bring them. She in turn finds herself hooking up with random guys, but never keeps them around long enough to see if there could possibly be something more.

That is…until Hunter Bryant enters the picture.

When the handsome pre-med student shows up in the right place at the right time, captivating her with his stormy gaze, she immediately pushes him away, thinking he’s no different than any other guy. The deeper Hunter delves into her life, trying to break through her iron-clad walls, the more she begins to question whether she is truly capable of opening her heart up to another man.

Maddie soon finds herself forced to make a difficult decision, one that will forever change both of their lives. Will she shut Hunter out of her life for good or will she finally open up her heart and allow herself the life she never dreamed she deserved?

**Please note: Unforeseen Heartbeat can be read as a standalone, however it is highly recommended that you read book one in the series, Relinquishing Liberty.**

Fristly let me tell you this is the second book in a series BUT book one does NOT need to be read. Book one is Liberty & Shayne's story.

Moving on. I loved Unforeseen Heartbeat, much more than I liked the first book. I liked Maddie in book two you really got into her mind and saw the issues she had been dealing with since that awful night when she was sixteen. Throughtout Unforeseen Heartbeat Maddie would talk about how she would or could never love anyone. She never believed in falling in love. Of she loved her Brother, family & friends but she never had given her heart to someone.
Broken since she had her abortion when she was just sixeen. Maddie is just a shell of the how a girl should be at her age. She spends her time drinking, sleeping and bed hopping. Going from one night stand to one night stand. This is all Maddie is convinced she's good enough for.
After one fateful night when a one night stand goes horribly wrong and the one person who has been on Maddie's shit list is the one to save her..With no memories from the night before, Maddie wakes up in a strange bed with a strange guy. Score. Well thats what Maddie thinks until she realises where she is and that she is actually fully clothed. That never happened before. Maddie thinks she knows where she is but why would she be here? She hated the owner of the house. Shayne.
Enter Hunter. Hunter is hot, any female would be crazy to think he wasn't. After Maddie gives him one hell of a tongue lashing, and kicks him out he leaves the people closest to her to explain the events from the nights before. Once Maddie realises Hunter was just being thoughtful and caring can she keep her hands off him? Has Maddie got any restraint when it comes to hot guys? When Maddie finally realises who saved her last night, she realises Shayne deserves her forgivness. They were both young and drunk & she never actually told him he got her pregnant so how can she blame him? It may take time but Maddie realises it wasn't all Shayne's fault and he has changed. This is a big step for Maddie.
Maddie grows up alot throughtout this book and Hunter is mostly to thank for that. Hunter teaches Maddie that she is worthy of love and not just worth a quickie in any convinient location. When Maddie seems to develop a stalker it's Hunter who is there to care for and protect her. But how long will he hang around?
Hunter & Maddie did not get to where they are easily. Maddie has never trust a man apart from Brett but Hunter creeps his way into her heart and she can't seem to shift him. With the approval from her big brother Maddie & Hunter make things offical and become Boyfriend & Girlfriend. Now they are offical will this keep her crazy stalker away? Is the stalker as obvious as we all think? Will Hunter stand by his girl when things get a little rough and Maddie finds out she is reliving the past?
I really enjoyed this book. Maddie is broken and Hunter is her glue. A breath of fresh airfor Maddie that's what Hunter is, but can Maddie get past the fact that she doesn't believe in love? Or will this ruin the relationship they have built?
Maddie has some cracking friends who stand by her side when things get a little tough. LIberty obviously but more so Robbie and Justin. Robbie is Maddie's new roommate since Liberty moved out and Justin is Robbie's boyfried. OMG these two made me cry with laughter. The dick in a box scene just topped it off, I was hwoling with laughter. Maddie see's these guys and their junk more than she see's her own. Basically she has nudist housemates. Be prepared to laugh when these are around.
Maureen Mayer did a fabulous job on her second book and I for one cannot wait for Brett's story. Unforeseen Heartbeat will make you laugh & cry. It is full of angst, drama, love, fights, shocking revelations and friendships being rebuilt. Maddie grew up alot and it was for the best. I realy connected with these characters. If your looking for an easy read with all the good stuff then this right here is the book you should read.

Maddie has sworn off love and is only taking from men what she wants, thanks to giving her V-card up to her brother's best friend. And the fact that he was a total man whore. Maddie has spent her time drinking and bed hopping. She is hell on wheels. So with that being said, Maddie gets herself into a bit of a pickle at frat party when someone she trusts drugs her drink. Enter Hunter, the all mighty delicious pre-med hottie.

"You have no idea how f#*king sexy it is for me to find your p#*ssy slick and ready, knowing that I did that to you."

Maddie has no memory of the night before, so when she wakes up and has a hot stranger in her room she freaks, especially since she in the house of the one person she hates the most, Shayne. Maddie lays into Hunter and forces him to leave and has the people she loves explain to her the previous night's events. They help Maddie understand that Hunter is thoughtful and caring; she has no restraint when it comes to him.

I loved how possessive he had become, and he wasn's afraid to show it, but it wasn't like I had any desire to get away from him any time soon, if ever. I'd stay here wrapped up in him for all eternity if I could.

Hunter doesn't really take no for an answer. The word relentless pops into my head when he keeps showing up. Not only is Hunter a pre-med student, he is also in the military to help pay for his college. That right there makes him schmexy and he did not need to be the bad boy even though he does own a bike and has tattoos. He just makes your heart melt the way he shows Maddie that she is loved and how she deserves to be loved.

"Because I want it to mean something to you. I'm not going to just f#*k you, Maddie, I'm not like that, and you deserve so much better than just a quick, emotionless f#*k. If you really want me, let me take things slow. Let me show you how special you really are to me."

Their relationship develops from barely tolerating the other to life altering. When events start happening in Maddie's life, Hunter takes her safety into his own hands, proving he will stop at nothing to keep her safe. Don't get me wrong, Hunter deserved a face punch when he kept a huge secret from Maddie, but Maddie deserved one too. I felt these two were never going to get it together. Then there was the Aahhhhh moment that made me swoon inside.

"That was me loving you, and I will always show you just how much I love you, whether it's through my actions or my words. I never want you to think any less of what we share together. I'm not like those other assholes you were with before me. I want more than just your body, Madelyn. I want all of you. Heart, body and soul. And I promise I will always cherish this moment, because you finally trusted me enough to open yourself up to me and let me love you the way you deserve to be loved."

The author grabbed my attention and kept it through the whole book. You never knew what was going to happen between these two. When these two finally collided-holy smokes Batman! The secondary characters kept you in stitches. Be prepared when you meet Maddie's best friend, Liberty. (her story was told in Reqluishing Liberty) I was just heartbroken in some parts that I thought I would never be put back together. With every twist and turn Maureen gave us, we still got the happy, sexy, tantalizing love of hope.

"I love you, Madelyn. God, I love you so f#*king much."

Guess only they know what their hearts can endure!!!!

"Dear Lord, could you guys be any hotter together? Liberty raised her hand fanning her face. "I swear you two must have just made a baby the way you were going at it."

Well, this book wasn’t what I was expecting at all. There were twist and turns with every page, but what was amazing about it was that all of those twists and turns were completed by one of the sweetest and angsty love stories ever. It was sweet, sexy, tantalizing and so beautiful. Now, with all of that it comes a down side, this was so much more than a pretty love story filled with hearts and flowers. It was gripping and enthralling and just did not quit from page one. But knowing all of this, it was still an amazing story that I wanted more of. Maureen Mayer just captured me from the beginning and played with my heart so much through the course of this book that I am sure I will still be thinking about it several days from now.

Maddie has a reputation. She has done everything to make sure she never has to worry about feeling anything from a guy ever. She knew who she was, she knew the reputation she held, but there was no way anyone was going to change that. Well, until unforeseen circumstances threw her directly into the arms of Hunter.

Hunter, the amazingly hot pre-med student with the piercing grey eyes, sees something in Maddie and he is completely captivated by her. But she has serious walls built around her heart. She is determined not to let anything beyond them. She does everything she knows how to do to push him away. Far, far away. But Hunter isn’t going to go willingly.

But when it comes down to it, Maddie has to make the ultimate decision. Of course, Hunter makes this choice a lot simpler for her and now she is faced with more than she can possibly deal with. Can she find the room in her heart to let all of Hunter in or will she be satisfied with what she has already gained from him?

There are a couple of really hard scenes to get through in this story, but every last page of it is so completely worth it. I don’t want to tell you too much about what you can expect from it because I refuse to ruin any moment of this book. I was kept on the edge of my seat, I fell in love, my heart broke, it was put back together and then just when I think I can’t get through any more, something else happens. There are so many twists and turns it is hard to fathom that two people can be put through so much.

Maureen Mayer has an amazing style in her writing and it captured me from the beginning and it never relented. She paints an amazing picture of the people and the places and there is nothing I want more than to comfort and love right along with the characters in the story.

And speaking of characters, I loved them all. The quick wit and banter between them is just amazing and kept me giggling. I loved the names they used to describe everything from one another to their body parts.

You don’t want to miss this book; it will touch every last part of your soul. I found myself struggling right along through everything as the characters were. This book made my anxiety rise and fall and it made my heart race and my pulse quicken. You can never experience the same book twice, but this is definitely one that I am putting on my re-read list because I just fell so in love with all the characters. I absolutely loved this book and I think you will too!

Unforeseen Heartbeat is book #2 in the Second Chances series, having read the first book Relinquishing Liberty I was lucky enough to be given a review copy of Unforeseen Heartbeat by the author in exchange for an honest review so here goes...

I will be honest it’s been a while since I read the first book in the series and I had to do a quick reread of the end of book #1 to catch up.

Although this book is a standalone I would recommend that you read Relinquishing Liberty firstly because it will help you make more sense of this book, but mainly because it’s a good book lol.

Ok so I’m just gonna put it out there at the start of this book Maddie is a whiny little bitch!!!!
I’m sure we are all thinking it but I’m just honest enough to say it!!!. She’s self absorbed and
wallowing in her own little pity party and to be honest I didn’t like her at all!!!!

However I’m so glad that after being roofied she does seem to have a personality change for the better and I loved seeing the real, normal Maddie.

I’d forgotten how good the banter is between Maddie & Liberty and in places, the names they called each other were bloody hilarious!!

Now, Hunter, Hunter, Hunter..... SWOON!!!

He is just delicious, he’s protective and alpha as well as in uniform and a trainee doctor find me a women out there whose fantasy that doesn’t cover lol he’s the honest to goodness complete package!!!!

I loved the fact that he wooed Maddie and the sex was a long time coming so that she would know that he wanted to know her and not just sleep with her. Don’t get me wrong I wanted this book to get steamy but how sweet the romance part was just made me go arrrrr.

He left WTF!!!! For at least two chapters I will admit I thought he was scum!!! I’m so glad he redeemed himself!!!

I seriously think Brett needs his own book; he needs to get over Liberty and find his own forever love!!

I’m so glad that Maddie didn’t spend the whole book hating on Shane, what he did at 18 wasn’t cool but hell it was a long time ago!!!

By the time things got steamy between Maddie & Hunter I think it would be fair to say that the chemistry was cracking between them. It made me chuckle that the author turned the typical on its head and made Maddie the sexual aggressor!!!

I wasn’t expecting the stalker twist and although I won’t say who it is, I had my sneaking suspicions who was responsible.

This book is lovely it’s an old school romance with a twist of action and drama; I loved it and now can’t wait for the third book Bittersweet Catastrophe to be released. This book is a heart-warming 4 stars!!!

BETH'S 3 STAR REVIEW

**Complimentary copy provided by author for an honest review**

Unforeseen Heartbeat is the second book in The Second Chances Series. It is highly recommended by the author Relinquishing Liberty is read before you read this book, so I did read Relinquishing Liberty first, but after reading both, I personally don’t think it is required. The first book is about Liberty and Shayne, but you are also introduced to Maddie and her brother Brett in that book, but there really isn’t a lot of information in the first book that is not repeated in Unforeseen Heartbeat. If you don’t read the first book I honestly don’t think you be lost in this story.

Maddie, as a young sixteen year old got drunk at a party for her brother and ended up pregnant, which she ended up terminating. From that moment forward she never believed in love, would never let any guy get close, randomly hooking up with them for sex and having a love ‘em and leave ‘em attitude. One night, a random hookup goes bad, but thankfully Hunter Bryant was there to help her. Hunter is a hot pre-med student in the ROTC, who doesn’t love a “McDreamy” to-be in a uniform. Hunter wants to be friends, maybe more but Maddie tries to push him away like she does everyone else, she’s not used to a guy liking her for who she is. But she just can’t seem to fight it and slowly lets him in and lets her walls down.
This is the second novel for this author and like her first the book, it is well written but I also had issues with this book with the storyline, especially with some of the contradictions and inconsistencies in it. This book started off really good for me, it really pulled me in right away and I started to feel a connection with the characters. Although as the story progressed, I felt the book had more and more filler and not enough actual story. I found the build up of their relationship to be really drawn out and for me it felt like it didn’t have a realistic feel to it, would 20 year olds really act this way, no I really don’t think so. I also found the book to be way too predictable. The thing I enjoy the most about reading is the element of surprise but every twist and turn that happened in the book I saw happening long before it actually happened. Also I found there was a lot of unnecessary filler in this book making it feel really long and drawn out and I ended up skimming parts of the book.

Overall it was an okay read, didn’t hate it but didn’t love it. When I read the synopsis for it, I expected so much more from the storyline and when it didn’t happen, it really just left me disappointed and turned off overall.

ARC provided by author in exchange for honest review.

If you've read Relinquishing Liberty by Maureen Mayer than you are probably already in love with her and her writing, and Unforeseen Heartbeat will only make you love her more! This story has it all! Love, Passion, Secrets, Suspense, EVERYTHING!!!

Maddie we met in Relinquishing Liberty and Unforeseen Heartbeat is her story along with the hot as hell Hunter! Oh Hunter... where to start? I absolutely loved his character, the way he cared for Maddie, how he treated her like a queen, and protected her with all of his being. There was a part where I was like WTF Hunter?! But quickly forgave him.. Trust me, if you want a new book boyfriend to swoon over, Hunter is it!

I loved how this story flowed, and how you felt thing things that Maddie was going through, and how it was affecting her. I loved how she finally realized that maybe she does deserve someone in her life, and to love, instead of always beating herself up over things she can't change in her past. Watching her character grow throughout this story was an amazing experience.

We also got to see more of Liberty and Shayne, as well as Maddie and Shayne coming to terms with her decisions of the past, and moving forward from that, even if it wasn't an easy path. Robbie and Lance, Maddie's new roommates had me laughing my ass off at times with their antics and things they would say, trust me, you'll love them!

This story also had a bit of suspense written into it, and I was always trying to figure out who was tormenting Maddie, and once I thought I knew who it was, Maureen through me for a loop and I was dead wrong! I loved how that part of the story played out.

This book proves, people can really change, and the people you think you know, you really don't. It just takes the right people in your lives to have your happy ever after.

This isn't your typical book where girl meets guy, they fall in love, and everything ends in a happy ever after. This book has heartbreak, twists and turns built in to every chapter, and is a full on roller coaster of emotions. Maureen Mayer did an amazing job on her second book, and has officially made it to my list of authors to stalk to find out when her next book will be out! Her writing captures you and doesn't let go, and Maddie and Hunter's story is a prime example of this. I encourage everyone to One Click this read and don't let it sit around on your Kindle, buy it, read it, and fall in love with it, just like I did.

This is my first book I read by Maureen Mayer . Unforeseen Heartbeat, is the second book in the series, the first being Relinquishing Liberty. I did not read Relinquishing Liberty and I followed the story pretty well. I might suggest reading Relinquishing Liberty first to get to know the characters better. I was a little lost about what was going on with the secondary characters, but it didn't effect Maddie and Hunter's story.

Maddie will be the first to admit she is a little promiscuous.
She has a event in her past that makes her think she is not worthy of relationships. So, she sleeps with guys with no string attached.
One night at a party, she is drugged and almost rapped. Thanks to her friends, nothing happened. But when she wakes up the next day she is greeted by a handsome stranger who is helping to take care of her. Little does she know her life is going to change. Majorly.
Hunter is a premed major on in the ROTC. He is also her knight in shining armor. Hunter steps in to help take care of Maddie and also convinces her and her friends that she needs to press charges against who did this to her.
All Maddie wants to do is put this ordeal behind her. Forget the whole thing and forget Hunter. But everywhere Maddie turns, Hunter is there. In class, sending flowers to her work, hanging out with her friends.
Hunter wants to win over Maddie, but not in the way everyone else wants Maddie. He wants all of her, not just to sleep with her. Hunter wants to build a relationship and fall in love. He is holding out on a physical relationship until she is completely in love with him. Hunter does all sorts of romantic things to win Maddie over. It literally made me swoon. All his ideas were so sweet and romantic.
In the middle of all the romance, someone is threatening Maddie. Vandalizing her car, smashing her apartment windows, and other horrid things. Hunter steps right in to take care of Maddie.
Just when things seem really good, relationship wise, the couple is thrown a few loops. Some serious events happen, life changing. Just when Maddie has it all, everything falls apart.
The drama is abundant in this book. Like super drama. It was worked into the story very well. I thought this story was good. I am gonna go back now and read Relinquishing Liberty. If it is anything like Unforeseen Heartbeat, I will love it!!

Once again Maureen has just brought so much to this book. Suggestion - If you have not read Relinquishing Liberty, read that book first. Things just make more sense that way. I loved that Maddie found someone who treated her with respect, and thought of her before himself. Enough so that Maddie started seeing herself in a new way, letting go of the past and focusing on the future that she thinks may be possible. Hunter brings out the best in Maddie, and is such a good guy. He's sweet, caring, thoughtful and wants Maddie to be safe. He teaches her a lot of things, but I think the most important is that she is worthwhile and worth love.
So color me surprised when he did what he did without letting Maddie have a say or choice in the matter. I wanted to slap him upside his pretty little head - hard. I felt so bad for Maddie, but he made his choice, and she wasn't going to try and change his mind after everything he said to her. I didn't blame her one bit. She went ahead with her plans. When Hunter did come back to Maddie because of something else that happened, I would have been so much meaner than she was. I guess that makes me not a nice person, whatever. I also would have made him work a lot harder than she did, before letting him back in. But I respect her choice.
I really loved the end of the book with everything happening for Shayne and Liberty as well as Hunter and Maddie. I think that Brett needs his own book. I also think that maybe he wasn't so much upset about what was going on with Shayne and Liberty, but felt left out and alone. Not a good place to be.
Maureen always finds a way to connect me with the characters and this book was no exception. I connected with Maddie on so many different levels, I laughed and cried right along with her. I felt the pain and the loss of someone, and I felt how afraid she was because of all the other things that were happening. The story line was fast moving, with action and romance, a little bit of drama, and some suspense thrown in there too. I love Maureen's writing, and will continue to be a fan for as long as she writes. She's drawn me in, and I just can't get enough. I can't wait to read the next book, Shayne's Story.

I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Let me preface this by saying that I have not read Relinquishing Liberty, which is the first book in the series. Unforeseen Heartbeat, however, read so much like a standalone that I never felt like I was missing out.
Maddie, our lovely protagonist, doesn't feel like she deserves to have any kind of relationship with men other than friends-with-benefits type deals thanks to a drunken mistake when she was just sixteen years old. She believes that men only want her for one thing, and one thing only:sex.

Hunter(cue fan girl swoon) enters the picture after helping her out one night when someone at a party goes too far. He wants Maddie to see that he truly does like her, for her, and not her body.
Maddie doesn't want to let him in, she's afraid she'll hurt him. The way she's starting to feel about Hunter, he's not the only one who could end up hurt in the end...

I absolutely loved this and it made me for sure know that there WILL be more Maureen Mayer books in my future. I'm friends with the author on Facebook, and she has such a great personality and that really shows through in the character's of Unforeseen Heartbeat. Oftentimes, you read a book like this and it feels a bit...two-dimensional, because the characters aren't fully developed. Whereas here, it was like in 3-D. I really want to hear more about Maddie's brother, and would love if he were to have a book in the future. Someone really seems to have done a number on the poor guy, can't tell you who because I don't do spoilers!

Anyways, there are a lot of really great twists in it, one that I NEVER saw coming til right before it happened. So, if I were you, I'd definitely pick up a copy of this book so you can see what I'm talking about! I really love how it all ended. Like I said though, I would love it if Brett got a story! Keep in mind this book is best read by those 18 years or older, but other than that I recommend.
*I was gifted a copy of this book by the author, but this in no way affected my opinion or this review*

To say I was excited to read this book was am understatement. I may or may not have stalked and hounded Maureen to get her to keep writing, but she loves me.

Unforeseen Heartbeat is the second book in the Second Chances series but before you panic it can be read as a stand alone. Book one followed the story of Liberty and Shayne, and Unforeseen Heartbeat is Maddie's story. Unforeseen Heartbeat picks up right where Relinquishing Liberty left off but don't freak out, you are not left in the dark, you find out all the details you need to know not to feel lost. However, I recommend reading Relinquishing Liberty as well, you get to meet Liberty and Shayne and trust me you want to know Shayne.

Maddie is bubbly, energetic, happy, strong and independent, but that is only on the outside. Inside she was broken, fragile and weak. She wants to be loved, but due to some horrible event in her past she believes she is not worthy of being loved. Instead she finds herself in an endless string of one night stands or no strings attached hook-ups. One night at a party her whole world changes when Hunter Bryant enters her life. Hunter is a strong, loving, protective, independent, and romantic. He gave Maddie time to adjust to having someone care about her, and when she pushes him away, he pushes back harder. Causing Maddie to second guess her view on love, and making her see that maybe she was worthy of being loved all along.

Unforeseen Heartbeat is a must read. Maureen writes in a way where you feel emotionally connected to the characters. Unforeseen Heartbeat is sweet, sexy, it has a who done it factor, it has humor and for the more sensitive people it will bring on tears.

Unforseen Heartbeat...there is no better title for this book! This book picks up from it's prequel, Relinquishing Liberty, but this is Maddie's story...what a wonderful story it is...Maddie is introduced in RL, as the bubbly best friend of Liberty. She is young, wild and free, but an amazing best friend. I never realized just how broken Maddie was...she wears a mask, parading around as a happy go lucky party gal, ready for a good time. But inside, she is withering away, yearning to be loved. But thinks she isn't worthy enough for it. So, she accepts the only love she knows how, through countless one night stands, pleasing her body of its wants and desires.

One unfortunate night, that could have become tragic for Maddie, brought her the unforeseen heartbeat she so desperately needed. <3 HUNTER BRYANT!!!! Ahhhh swoooooN!!!! Hunter is amazing...not the alpha male that I love reading about, but he is still that strong, very independent man. He is sexy, and romantic, not the rush things along kinda guy that Maddie is used to.I think that is why she fell for him so quickly, after she finally let her guard down. Hunter has his own ways of showing Maddie how to love, and is very endearing. Hunter is very protective of Maddie and always has her best interest at heart, but that could very possibly be a good thing, or a bad thing.

I won't go into too much detail, but Unforeseen Heartbeat is an absolute must read...I fell in love with Maddie and Hunter, and I loved watching Maddie grow from the young crazy wild woman to the woman she develops into, with Hunter's love. She story is gripping, real, and will even deduce you to tears.

Let me just start out by saying that the first book in this series, Relinquishing Liberty was good but Unforeseen Heartbeat was great!!! We met Maddie in the first book and she comes across as a super bubbly, super friendly and super promiscuous! But let me tell you there is so much more to this character than meets the eye. This book really lives up to the name of the series “Second Chances” as Maddie definitely makes some big changes in her life. I ran the gamut emotionally with this story, from laughing at Maddie and the crazy things that pop out of her mouth to gushing over Hunter and his amazingness to bawling my eyes out at a few unmentionable scenes ;) Did I mention I loved Hunter!!!!!
“Because I want to mean something to you. I’m not going to just fuck you, Maddie. I’m not like that, and you deserve so much better than just a quick, emotionless fuck. If you really want me, let me take things slow. Let me show you how special you really are to me.”
What an awesome character! Hunter is extremely sexy without having to be the bad boy. Sweet and romantic but definitely not a softy by any means! Along with getting to know these characters we do also get to see how Shayne and Liberty from the first book are doing as well getting to know Maddie’s roommate Robbie and his boyfriend Lance who seem to spend most of the book naked!
“Robbie! What have I told you about covering up your baloney pony when you’re moseying around the apartment?”
Overall this was a great read. Emotional, funny and sexy!! I look forward to the next book in this series!

From Maureen Mayer's first book, Relinquishing Liberty, I was completely head over heels for Liberty and Shayne. Well Hunter and Maddie have blown that crush to pieces!

Everyone wants to know who your book boyfriend is. If I had a choice for book best friend, it would be Maddie. She is fun, lovable, and hell on wheels. She is Liberty's best friend. She doesn't do relationships, but she is hardly alone! She has many hook-ups but never anything serious. Queue Hunter!

Hunter is all muscle and yummy. He drives a Harley. He is not all tatted up but he does have one tattoo. He is attending college along with Liberty and Maddie. He is also in ROTC. Yes, motorcycle and a man in uniform! HOLY HOT PANTS!! Almost forgot, pre-med. SWOON!

Hunter literally saves Maddie and changes her life forever. They meet at a frat party where Maddie was slipped the date rape drug. Before anything could happen, Shayne stopped it and Hunter swooped in for the rescue to calm out Maddie down and do a once over, medically.

Helping Maddie along with the almost rape, Hunter falls for Maddie and despite her trying to push him away, she lands right in his arms. Hunter has his work set out for him with our wild and rambunctious Maddie.

The path their relationship takes is an exciting adventure. Maddie's roommate will have your rolling with laughter. You'll even be scared for our dynamic duo. By the end of the book, I was bawling my eyes out for these two. And wait until you meet Lola! Definitely worth a read. I look forward to hearing more from Maureen Mayer.

4 sexy stars!!

I have to say, I liked the first book in this series, Relinquishing Liberty ( see below) a tad bit better than this one just because I liked the female lead better. This is not to say that Unforeseen Heartbeat isn't good, because it is spectacular!!
Maddie is a slutty and fashion-savvy kind of girl ( the kind we love to hate) , but if you read book #1 and the beginning of this book, you'd understand why. The poor girl took an important event in her life that led to dire consequences and mixed the emotions that stemmed from both situations into a trauma that shaped her life .
Hunter steps into her life as a hero and target of her wrath. Maddie can't explain why he gets to her and she starts to question the walls she has built around her and if she actually had any reason to in the beginning.

Hunter pushes all her buttons , which automatically makes him sweet and deliriously sexy. Their relationship develops from barely tolerating each other to life-changing. The ups and downs keep the reader wondering and the plot in itself is well-written. Every single character is perfectly developed, I can't stress this enough. I'm pretty certain this is the author's strength and the backbone to this story. Another thing that stood out to me about the writing style is the emotions. You feel every one of them, doesn't matter the character , in your gut. If its meant to lift you, it will. If its meant to twist your heart, it will.

I give this book 5 stars.
It is not necessary to have read the first book in the series Relinquishing Liberty to understand this book, but I recommend that you do so you can have some background information about some of the characters beforehand. This book was amazing from start to finish. Maddie was a girl with a past carrying the burden of her mistakes. Her mistakes made her not care about men. Meaningless sex with no attachments. That is until one night one of her mistakes catches up with her. Enter Hunter! And O-M-G, I just found my next book boyfriend. Hunter had my heart from the start. I loved how he cared about Maddie and wanted to take care of her and protect her. He was Mcdreamy soldier. HA HA, read the story and you will understand the meaning behind those words. He was hot and in love and you learned this not just with his words but with his actions. This story kept my attention the whole way through. From the first page to the last, at point I wanted to throw my brand new kindle on the floor and stomp on it, that's how pissed off Hunter made me. Ah if you wanna know like I said you gotta read the story. I loved how we got Shayne and Liberty from Relinquishing Liberty in this story too and got to know more about what their future looks like. I would recommend this book to friends and can't wait to read the next one in the series.

I loved this one better than the first book which is Shayne and Liberty's story. Both books are stand alones but it is best to read the first book to get the back story or you could be confused a little.

The 2nd book is Maddie Harrington's and Hunter Bryant's story. I fell in love with Hunter, I mean who wouldn't want a Dr. G.I. Joe? Swooning ;)

"I couldn't be sure what Hunter was doing to me, but I was quickly beginning to realize that he might be more than what I had bargained for... He just might turn out to be my game changer."

The author takes us on a journey of somewhat hard themes to write about so this book has some suspense elements in it as well.

"He finally opened my eyes and allowed me to see the good in myself, something no one had ever taken the time or put the effort in to do so."

I hope so much that Brett will find his boom in book 3. I was rooting for him in the first book instead of Shayne. Can't wait to see the continuation of Shayne and Liberty's continued story in 2.5 which is a Novella too. The synopsis makes me very nervous!

"Life continued to throw obstacles in my way, trying to break me down along every twist and turn, but with Hunter by my side, I had developed a renewed strength, and I wasn't willing to go down without a fight."

Oh My Gosh… I was lucky enough to read book 1, Unreliquishing Liberty, and book 2, Unforeseen Heartbeat back to back. I highly recommend this. The characters from book 1 are carried over and have big parts in the second book. This can be read as a standalone, but knowing the history will add so much to the story.

Maddie is broken. She is sassy and sweet, but not so trusting when it comes to men. She has put herself into the thought that she will never meet the right person, so one night stands are her only option. Then she meets Hunter. He refuses to have a one night stand, showing her how much more she deserves. I cannot decide if I like the almost sex scenes or the actual sex scenes better, they were both absolutely amazing.

Robbie, Maddie’s gay roommate, was one of my favorite characters. With him and his boyfriend walking around naked most of the time, I was laughing at all the nicknames Maddie was able to come up with for him. Their friendship was perfect. He took care of her like only a roommate and friend can. Standing by her when she didn’t know which end was up and helping her find her way to her happily ever after. I am hoping Maureen Mayer will share more of Robbie in future books in this series.

I definitely recommend you read this book.

I was teetering on the edge of a 4 Star Rating for this book.

Without spoiling this for any other readers...I must start out by saying this...
The book was good truly it was. My only issue was that I couldn't seem to understand why Hunter left Maddie without any further contact. He said that he loved he so much and he wanted her so badly but he never once attempted to contact her at all.

Maddie was the girl that went through something traumatic at a younger age and it left her feeling like love was nonexistent and life was meant to be full of meaningless sex without commitment. Guys had come to expect a sure thing with Maddie. She didn't feel she deserved anything more.

Hunter on the other hand was the first guy that made her feel something more. She fought it and pushed so hard against it but when you caved and they got to know each other well their love grew

Like I said above the book was once that held my attention but with that one factor in mind I found it hard to understand how he could walk away and no fight harder for what they had. Maddie was willing and almost was the point of begging him not to end their relationship but it just seemed to easy for a guy that loved her the way he said he did.

The ending bumped me back up to a 4 rating because who can resist a happy ending...even though Brett has me puzzled. I m very interested in hearing his story.

**I received this complimentary book from the author for an honest review**
*Sigh* Hunter Bryant is one sexy man! You have Maddie.. she was in "teenage love" her brother's ex-best friend Shayne.. Shayne was a man whore in high school. at a graduation party Maddie loses her V-card to Shayne.. He was a complete jerk and it molded her to who she is today. see Maddie is a bit.. Promiscuous. She likes to get her needs met with out the trouble of a boyfriend. So at a frat party one night things don't go the way she wants. Shayne and Hunter come to her rescue.. Now she doesn't know who Hunter is and Shayne is engaged to Liberty , Maddie's best friend. Hunter grows on Maddie and feelings happen. I love love ,love this story! A girl hurt but ends up finding her prince charming which she thought she would never find. This is a love story with all the drama, hurt, and fight that it needs.. it comes fully equipped with hot sexy Southern Georgia boys, A sexy Texan who is a Med student/ROTC, and a bunch of jocks who are jerks. The sex and chemistry between Hunter and Maddie is HOT .. It's funny how at the beginning she tries to push him away and be the "good girl" after she gets herself in trouble. When they collide watch out! HOLY SCHNIKES Batman! It is forever hot! I can't wait for Shayne's Novella "Bittersweet Catastrophe" coming out in the summer! I give it 5 stars! ~Chris

What do I think??? Fantastic! Fabulous!

This is book 2 in the series. The great thing is this is a complete stand alone. Relinquishing Liberty is the first book and it is absolutely awesome as well, but not necessary to read first.

We have Hunter - pre-med student in the ROTC program. Sexy, sweet, kind, thoughtful. Yes, ladies, he has pretty much all we could ask for.
Then we have Maddie - feisty, witty, serious "B" word attitude. She has little value for the opposite sex.

One night out, which supposed to be fun, turned tragic for the already jaded Maddie. A rowdy group of soccer players thought it would be a great idea to drug Maddie and have there way with her...

But Hunter was there to help Maddie. Not only did he help her through the tragic event, but he helped her find the missing parts of her. I was so surprised to see Maddie soften and find that after being treated like a smart, fun, kind person, she actually started to turn that direction.

The dynamics between Hunter and Maddie are amazing. They are so funny together. The two very different personalities play off of each other through out the entire book. This is hands down a fantastic story. I am jumping up and down waiving the book in the air...Read Me! Read Me! You will not be disappointed!

This was another great book in the Second Chances series! I absolutely loved the characters and the story line had me interested from the very beginning. This wasn’t just a story of love but also one of personal growth. I instantly took to Hunter and Maddie’s story.
Hunter and Maddie made an awesome couple. Hunter is a pre-med student in the ROTC program. He’s sweet, sexy, protective, and brings out the best in Maddie. Their personalities really complimented each other. I loved it when he teaches her how to shoot and self defense. It was really awesome to watch her become confident in herself. Their banter is hilarious and so is the way they interact with their friends. The personalities in the whole group are unique but they all get along and have a great time. I’ve definitely become attached to all of them.
I feel invested in this series and the characters. I really look forward to the next book in the series. The book flowed really well and I found that I had to force myself to put the book down so I could get other things done. Fantastic characters and well written story line lent for a great read. This was a wonderful 5 out of 5 stars!

I give this book 5 stars. Maddie had me wrapped me around in her story from the get go. She was every man’s dream .. A girl that didn’t want commitment just wanted a quick lay and move on. She didn’t see what she was doing was destructive to herself. Then one faithful night she meets Hunter. Hunter is that guy every girls wants.. Sexy… Pre-med student. From the moment Hunter & Maddie met there was undeniable chemistry. These two gave you love, hot hot steam sex.. and a new meaning of happiness.

Two of the best quotes are below, the first one I wish my husband would say or even feel that way *hehe*

“Babe, I didn’t think you could possibly be any more beautiful than when I first laid eyes on you, but watching you come completely unraveled in my arms is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.”

“Life was truly beautiful, and I couldn’t wait for ours to begin.”

The last quote was from Maddie. and what a way to look at things. This book is the 2nd in the series. Honestly I can’t wait for a 3rd hopefully it will be Brett.. Maddie’s brother series.

Unforeseen heartbeat by Maureen Mayer
4 stars
Received in exchange for an honest review from Addicted to books and authors
We were introduced to Maddie in Relinquishing Liberty and now we get her story, let me begin by saying she is a very happy person and seems to love life and I love the banter between her and her roommate Robbie and his boyfriend Lance, too funny. Maddie had a drunken night at the age of 16 which resulted in an unwanted pregnancy in which she terminated, she feels because of this she is unlovable so she only does hook ups no relationships. In comes Hunter to the rescue after Maddie is drugged at a frat party, let me just say did I swoon like crazy over Hunter. Hunter wants to start a relationship and Maddie is scared as life begins to throw crap in Maddies direction Hunter is there to pick up the pieces and rescue her.
I totally loved Maddie and Hunter, they are HOT! Hunter is every girls fantasy and Maddie is the broken girl totally worthy of his love. The writing style of this author is just amazing you are sucked into the story and you feel every emotion.

5 stars. My favorite part of being a blogger is watching an author grow in their writing though I loved Relinquishing liberty I love Unforeseen Heartbeat even more. This book was perfect in so many ways it had me on a rollercoaster of emotions but turning page after page. Once I picked this book up I could not stop reading until I finished. When you first meet Maddie you cant help but fall in love with her in book 1 but there is so much more to her that we dont know. Behind the bubbly fun loving best friend is a broken hurt girl. Maddie has comforted herself with numerous one night stands never helping her insecurite issues. Then Hunter comes into her life when she needed him most. HUnter and Maddies story is amazing and warms your heart. Hunter helps Maddie find herself and learn to love who she is. This book is an emotional read that will have you up and down and turning the page wanting more. Maureen Mayer you got my attention and I cant wait to see what you have in store for us next.

So, first this is book 2 in the series. BUT, I read it without reading book 1 and had no problem understanding what was going on. Book 1 is called Relinquishing Liberty and is about Maddie's best friend. Now I have bought both books because I loved this one so much I just have to read the first and I know I will be reading this book 2 again. This book grab my attention right from the start. I read half of it in one sitting then my kids started whining about being hungry and I had to stop. I couldn't wait to be able to sit down and finish it. Maddie was a little cliche with the blonde party girl college student and I didn't really like her but the more the story went on the more I fell in love with her and was rooting for her, or more like rooting for Hunter to help break down her walls. Hunter was sexy and so sweet and walked in to Maddie's life with no warning. This story was fun, exciting, sweet and sexy. A must read!

This was a wonderful book from Maureen Mayer. There is a first book of this series Relinquishing Liberty, but I have not read it and you can read Unforeseen as a standalone.

The story's main characters are Maddie Harrington who believes that guys only want her for one thing and one thing only. This is based on Maddie's assumption of a mistake that took place when she was just sixteen years old.

At a party one night while a things seem to get a little out of control for Maddie and enter Hunter Bryant (be still my heart) Maddie's Knight in White! Of course Maddie's doesn't know this yet because she feels that she is unworthly of Hunter....so not true! Hunter is patient and kind with Maddie and tries to gain her trust even though Maddie tries her hardest to push Hunter away.

The storyline is written very well and there is a little bit of everything in this story that the reader will like.

I highly recommend this to be on your TBR list!

Where to start? Well first I loved every bit of this book! Maureen has definitely topped herself with this one.

Oh Maddie, I feel like a part of me was ripped out and put onto pages and has your name. Her witty personality and broad use of vocabulary (cockgobbler was probably my favorite) made me love her after the first page. Watching her charcter grow from the begining of RL to the end of UH was fun, sad, scary, and most of the time comical.

And I can't forget about Hunter. Hunter is the definition of Prince on a white horse. He was so caring and loving to Maddie even when she was clearly still so damaged with her walls up. Reading how he made her open up to him was heartwarming.

Loved seeing what more happened to the charcters from the first book and the newly added one like Robbie and Lance. They all kept me wanting more.

All together this was a wonderful read and I loved it. Totally worth your time and will keep you sucked in till the very end!

Okay so who for one doesn't like someone in a uniform or even someone in the medical field that is steaming hot well introducing Hunter the pre-med ROTC hottie who has Maddies knickers in a bunch after she went to a party and doesn't remember what happened. But Hunter relentlessness to be friends at least with Maddie is so fun to read about. They have chemistry and when they finally get together sparks fly like the 4th of July. However when happiness strikes so does sadness and the decision Hunter made without telling Maddie will tear them apart. But this isn't just about a love story oh no this is about not getting your heart broken, standing up for yourself, and finding yourself. It's funny, lovable, you will have tears, and fall in love with this book. There is also book one of this series that you should catch as well. But this can be read as a standalone which I did.

I read Relinquishing Liberty, which was Maureen Mayer's debut book, a few months ago and really liked it a lot. Well let me tell you, Unforeseen Heartbeat blew that book right out of the damn water! What an amazing continuation of this series! Maureen Mayer has a true gift for storytelling. I was heavily invested in these characters right from the get go.

Sexy, suspenseful, full of angst! Unforeseen Heartbeat was a beautifully woven story. Hunter is an amazing book boyfriend! And Maddie, I loved to hate Maddie. But she was real and relatable. Her growth in the book was astounding, she really bloomed and came into her own. These two made a great pair.

Maureen, you have a bonafide hit on your hands here. I cannot wait to see where else these secondary characters will take us. Please, for the love of God, tell me Brett is getting his HEA!?
