The back cover’s description of a “story that celebrates the pleasures of reading” is contradicted by the narrative. Billy and Jack travel through a rainforest with the book, encountering Australian native animals and invariably finding themselves in danger.

The watercolour illustrations are engaging, however the text urges the reader to quickly turn the page to save the boys, and doesn’t allow time to explore the illustrations, nor to recognise that the boys are taking part in the story they are reading.
