Superman’s first adventure following the CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS mega-event just may be his last as he comes face-to-face with Metallo, the Man with the Kryptonite Heart!

John Lindley Byrne is a British-born Canadian-American author and artist of comic books. Since the mid-1970s, Byrne has worked on nearly every major American superhero.
Byrne's better-known work has been on Marvel Comics' X-Men and Fantastic Four and the 1986 relaunch of DC Comics’ Superman franchise. Coming into the comics profession exclusively as a penciler, Byrne began co-plotting the X-Men comics during his tenure on them, and launched his writing career in earnest with Fantastic Four (where he also started inking his own pencils). During the 1990s he produced a number of creator-owned works, including Next Men and Danger Unlimited. He also wrote the first issues of Mike Mignola's Hellboy series and produced a number of Star Trek comics for IDW Publishing.
Superman, trying to find who stole the rocket that brought him to Earth, finds a secret lab.
Then Clark and Lois go for a run, before seeing a bank has been broken into…
This is the first Post-Crisis appearance of Metallo! Interesting take on this character, that he’s instantly ok with becoming a less than human being and setting out to kill Supes… just because.
The most exciting part for me is to see what Lex Luthor will do with this new information…
A stellar first issue for Superman (which incredibly, or rather credibly, lasted until 2006). Byrne did what he said he would do. He emphasized what mattered and brought Clark to the new age. I especially loved him highlighting that Superman is human at heart because despite both being from Krypton, to me, Kal was always more from Earth while Kara (given her vastly different experience on Krypton) was always more Zor-El at heart.
Not exactly an origin story, but, then again, don't we all know how Superman got his start? Still, it was enjoyable and fun, and I can't wait to read the further installments.
I really did enjoy this book. Haven't really read much of John Byrne's work much. But after reading just this issue. I know that I'll be reading a lot more from him.
Re-reading my way through John Byrne’s 2 year run on Superman and Action Comics.
Here’s where it begins. Great story with Metallo. Awesome fight where Supes gets his ass handed to him. Superman doesn’t even defeat him, it’s Lex ex Machina.
Es genial releer cómo John Byrne va sentando las bases de este nuevo Superman, mucho más humano, y cómo Lex Luthor va pergeñando sus planes a su alrededor. Imprescindible.
