Set in a more exotic location, Aruba in the Netherlands Antilles, and with characters from North America as well as Europe, this story nonetheless has a very "Dutch" feel to it.
Lillian and Dominique are in Aruba on what should be an idyllic holiday but in the opening pages we find Lillian meeting someone unexpectedly and learn that she has a secret...a secret that she hasn't confided even to her best friend. It is this secret that will lead to her disappearance.
What follows is the story of how the girls came to be in Aruba and how they spent their first few days. The background was very detailed and the girls were typical students on holiday...flirting, drinking, making new friends. The only part of this that rang false for me was the struggle Lillian had persuading her parents to let her go on the trip. At 21 she would surely be more autonomous?
The second part of the story involves the search for Lillian. Here we are shown a very different Aruba. All is not idyllic, there is a very dark underbelly that tourists rarely see.
As the story unfolds we learn Lillian's secret and finally who she met unexpectedly....for me this was excellently done...I did guess "whodunnit" but not until almost the end of the story.
All in all another great story from Suzanne Vermeer.
