After reading The Last Victim, the 1st book in Karen Robard’s Dr Charlotte Stone Series,https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
which I found interest albeit not crazy about, I wanted to find out where the series where a renowned psychiatrist, who studies serial killers and a serial killer that is killed during one of her studies would go.
Hell, did I struggle through The Last Kiss Goodbye, the follow-up book. I eventually found myself skimming over a lot of the pages….why??
Okay, Dr Charlotte aka Charlie Stone is once again involved in yet another serial killer, when a distraught and frightened young woman knocks late one night at her door asking for help…she’s running from yet another serial killer, who is doing some really bad things….sounds familiar??? Yes, just like the book before!!!!
And now we have Charlie having Michael Garland, as a ghost, invading her life. And guess what??? Charlie is so totally into Michael! Yes, she’s attracted to a ghost!!!!
Do I like Charlie or not? Jeez, this is supposed to be a very intelligent, educated and renowned psychiatrist but the way she behaves is just unbelievable. She spends her time fighting and questioning and internalizing…ooh I cannot be attracted to a ghost!!!! Ooh, I can’t really believe his innocence….he’s a ghost!!! Excuse me!!!
Please tell me if Charlie is sane……she’s trying to make sense of her feelings for a ghost….no, she can’t be sane if that’s what she feels….why not choose Tony, the attractive FBI agent who is so attracted to her…after all he’s human right…
I like Michael Garland ….he’s entertaining and rather sexy…yes even for a ghost!
Ooh, that tight white T-shirt, jeans and boots!!!! Swoon!!! In fact, he was the reason why I did not give this book a 1star rating!!!!
The exchanges between Michael and Charlie – let’s just say frustrating more than anything else….in fact, I would have liked a lot more dialogue …of which there is very little in this book.
Of course, Charlie being so clever helps the FBI and family find the serial killer…oh did I forget to mention that I guessed who he/she was almost immediately???
Now, what frustrates me…is that I have to see the ending to Charlie & Michael’s story!!!!!!

She liked Tony a whole lot. She found him attractive, sexy. His kisses turned her on.Did she just say she’s not stupid!!!!
Tony she could kiss. Tony she could have sex with. Tony she could even, eventually, if things worked out, make a life with.
Stupid she wasn’t. She knew enough to choose the possible over the impossible.

I'm confused by all the 5 star ratings, I won't lie. I'm halfway through and struggling to finish. I feel as if the author thinks I'm an idiot. I'll bet Charlie has shot Michael 150 dirty looks so far and I don't need to be told why every single time. I get it. She can't reply instead because people will think she's crazy. Yeah, I caught on the first time I was told. Geesh! The book would be pretty good if there was more murder mystery and less dirty looks/explaining of said dirty looks. There are so many of those silly notations that I'm struggling to follow the actual plot. It's awful. I can't see myself giving more than 2 stars. And that's being generous.
Okay, I finished it and I need to bump that down to 1 star. It was a book about Charlie fucking a ghost and bitching about their relationship or lack thereof. And speaking of lack of things...this one lacks a plot. And maturity. It's really bad and I have to wonder what book those who gave it 5 stars were reading. Apparently not the same book as myself.

The Last Kiss Goodbye offers the same major obstacle as The Last Victim: Charlie's overwhelming attraction for the ghost of a man who was convicted as a serial killer. Yes, Michael's ghost claims his innocence (just like most convicted felons do). But as far as Charlie knows, Michael is guilty of killing 7 women.
Maybe if Charlie's character had started her own private investigation into the circumstances and evidence in Michael's case and found concrete proof of his innocence in the The Last Victim I'd be able to accept her feelings for Michael. Her willingness to pursue this personal relationship with him based on physical appeal and sexual chemistry feels unethical and callous, as if attraction trumps character.
So no more Dr. Charlotte Stone stories for me, although I'll continue to read K.R.'s stand-alones because she is a very talented author. The description of her December release of Hunted sounds like a great way to start the holiday reading season.

This is one of the hardest books I have had to rate. I will start off by saying I absolutely loved the first book in this series, The Last Victim. The Last Kiss Goodbye, however I found difficult to get through to the point where I considered putting it down and not finishing it.
About 80% of the book involves the heroine, Dr. Charlotte Stone – criminal psychologist, arguing and giving dirty looks to her love interest suspected serial killer ghost, Michael Garland.
I am actually a fan of the Charlie and Michael romance (yes, despite him being dead and being a convicted serial killer) but the interplay between the two lost points for me in several areas including:
1. Charlie was arguing with Michael over their relationship status and was fretting over him disappearing instead of protecting herself from a serial killer who was right outside her door. Um, hello?!? Even if he was alive, in the flesh, she should have been more concerned with the serial killer stalking her and the victim who ran to her for help than advising Michael to "go to the light"
2. She doesn't trust him enough to really believe he is innocent of the murders, but she trusts him enough to tie his spirit to her for all eternity and to sleep with him?
3. Michael acts like a spoiled child with his comments and taunting her. This plays more of a middle school romance in parts than an adult one. If he cares and loves her so deeply, then why isn't her happiness paramount?
4. Charlie seems to be in love with Michael, but after a passionate night she still threatens to kiss Tony – poor Tony! He is totally being lead on by Charlie and appears to be being used to make Michael jealous rather than to pursue an actual relationship.
5. Charlie and Michael seem to be having the same conversation over and over again throughout the novel. Not much ground was gained or lost, they just kept lamenting their situation. It was tiresome.
The most frustrating part is that the story line and the novel have so much potential! There is a good story in there, buried under a lot of needless back and forth. Charlie Stone appears to be a great detective and psychologist, but her lack of common sense in her relationship and when being pursued by a serial killer is just frustrating.
The books winning moment is that the ending is phenomenal. The last 5% of the book is great and is reminiscent of the first novel in this series. It ends on a fantastic note which sheds a little "light" into the underlying series story. However, I'm not sure the strong ending is enough to make up for the weakness of the majority of the novel.

Oh my... I didn't read the first book in the series but I truly loved this one. I think I rated it 5 stars because of the end, yup it's definitely the end who got me. I hope there will be a third book, please Karen I am begging you, because I need to read more about Charlie and Michael! They're just so perfect for each other!
"Baby, I'm telling you up front that if you go into hotel room with Dudley with the intention of having sex with him, that's going to turn into the most haunted hotel room you've ever been in in your life."
I got so many feelings in this book I can't even describe them all. It was a mix of: fun, romance, love, heartbreak, mistery, suspense, scary, serial killer, torn between two guys (one dead, one alive), injustice... (I'm not making any sense, I know... forgive me?)
I think I fell in love with Michael with his sassy attitude even if he's dead. I found myself swooning over him and being sad about his death (it would have been worse if I had actually read the first book!). All I wanted is for him to be happy, find some peacefulness and somehow being with Charlie. I know it's an impossible love but who doesn't like those? Well, sometimes it can be annoying the 'we-can't-be-together thing'...
Anyway, can we erase Michael's death? Please?

My Thoughts:
I wonder if every book in the Charlotte Stone series is going to have the word “Last” in the title. The only problem is that none of them actually are the last anything. And maybe they ought to be.
You really have to enjoy train-wreck books in order to read this series. I’m serious. The main character is Dr. Charlotte Stone, a criminal psychiatrist who studies serial killers. Charlotte is an utterly classic case of a shrink who really, really needs to see a shrink. Not just because she studies what makes serial killers tick because she is the surviving victim of one, but, because, you guessed it, she’s in love with a convicted serial killer.
Even better, the drop-dead gorgeous serial killer that Charlotte is in love with is quite literally dead. Michael Garland is Charlotte’s very own personal poltergeist. On top of all her other issues, Charlotte sees dead people. Garland is one of the few who can see her--whether or not she’s wearing anything.
And yes, they’ve had sex, but only after he died. The amount of crazysauce involved in just the set up for the series is enough to make your head spin--a complete 360 degree spin! (If you haven’t fallen out of your chair yet, read The Last Victim, or just this review, for more details)
In spite of (or maybe because of) the wacko setup, it is impossible to stop reading this damn thing. Some of that may be sheer disbelief at the situations Charlotte continues to let herself get sucked into.
I mean, really, it’s one thing to get turned on by bad boys, but ghostly bad boys? I can kind of understand undead bad boys, meaning vampires, but the ghost of a serial killer? Especially when there is a flesh-and-blood FBI agent panting after her? In normal circumstances, the FBI agent would totally be the hero, but no, that’s too tame for this girl.
And then there’s the current serial killer. Yes, really. The actual point of this story, besides the woo-woo sex, is the hunt for a live serial killer. Which totally takes second place to Charlotte’s emotional angst about keeping the ghostly one hanging around long after he should have gone into the light. Or even down into the dark.
I will say that Charlotte is damn good at her day job. Just totally illogical when it comes to her personal life.
Verdict: In her personal choices, Charlotte reads as way past Too Stupid Too Live. She even calls herself out as filling that trope. On the other hand, the train-wreck is so ear-screechingly loud and the sparks from the brakes squealing on the tracking so eye-poppingly bright that you can’t turn your eyes away. This story should not work at all, but I couldn’t stand not to finish it.
It also bears an increasingly strong resemblance to Stacey Kennedy’s Supernaturally Kissed, except that her characters were not as stupid and Kennedy’s ghost hero was a hero in life. Also there was a possibility of an HEA there that does not exist here.
The “find the serial killer” plot line, which is ostensibly the main plot, takes a back seat to the ghost romance. Or the angsting over the ghost romance, which is too damn bad. There was a high suspense factor here that didn’t get exploited as well as it could have.
Rating this feels nearly insane. It is either the best 2 star book or the worst 4 star book I’ve ever read. Therefore:

I loved this second installment. Charlie and Michael are sooo hot together and I loved the progress they made in their relationship. I also loved how jealous Michael kept getting, OMG. He went ape shit on Tony and I was thrilled lol. I did get annoyed at how much Charlie was fighting her feelings... BUT it totally made sense that she couldn't let herself hope for a relationship with a ghost. I can't wait to continue on to book 3!
SERIES IMPORTANCE: Medium. While I don’t think anyone would be lost if they skipped book one, I definitely think it’s a good idea to start from the beginning with this series. It is not meant to be a standalone because the romance and side characters are all established in the first book.

I enjoyed the first book of this series but Charlie really annoyed the shit out of me in this book.

It was with great reservations that I went into this one. There was so much that I didn't like in the first one. Sadly some of those same issues came into play with this one. Charlie personifies, for me, the whole TSTL. I can't stand that she is attracted to a serial killer ghost, too preposterous. In the end I just can't get past these issues, so in the end this book and series just isn't for me.

Chillingly Good! 5 "blended genres" stars! I don't even know how to describe this book, as it's unlike anything I have ever read before. It's in a genre all of its own: equal parts paranormal, thriller, mystery, romance and even a touch of humor! I had recently listened to one of Karen Robards historical romances (Dark of the Moon) and, loved it so much, I knew I needed to experience more of her writing. When I was lucky enough to get a copy of The Last Kiss Goodbye, little did I know that I would stumble upon a new must-read series! I can't wait to read the next installment, Her Last Whisper, which is scheduled to be released this month (August 2014)!
Although this is book 2 of the Charlotte Stone novels, Ms. Robards does a fantastic job of describing the background of the prior book in the series. As a result, even though the events in this series occur in chronological order, and involve the same main characters, The Last Kiss Goodbye can be read as a standalone. All that said, I enjoyed this one so much that now, even knowing the history, I want to go back and read book 1, The Last Victim, just to fully experience how it all began!

Just when you think you know which way Dr. Stone's heart is turning, or the identity of the Gingerbread Man; guess again, because Ms. Robards takes you on another thrilling twist and turn.
I highly recommend this series to not just paranormal romance lovers, but also to readers who enjoy thrillers, even those who do not ordinarily read romances. The psychological aspects of this novel, including the dissecting of the criminal/serial killer mind is so clever and profound, that I believe its appeal is likely to be appreciated by fans spanning many different genres.

Although this is book 2 of the Charlotte Stone novels, Ms. Robards does a fantastic job of describing the background of the prior book in the series. As a result, even though the events in this series occur in chronological order, and involve the same main characters, The Last Kiss Goodbye can be read as a standalone. All that said, I enjoyed this one so much that now, even knowing the history, I want to go back and read book 1, The Last Victim, just to fully experience how it all began!

Difficult to rate. I love ghost stories, serial killer stories and romance. This book has it all. Unfortunately, it also contains some of the things I dislike the most in a novel: a love triangle, a heroine the author presents as smart and who acts mostly like a twelve year old, and... what's the equivalent of "jerk" for a woman ?
Both the hero and heroine act rather selfishly, so in a way, they deserve each other I guess...
I won't start on the thriller part, very basic, and the psychology... even worse. The paranormal was ok.
Could have been better, I'll read the sequel though ;)

I wasn't able to finish this book and probably won't read anymore of her books although I have enjoyed the others that I have read. I just found it a bit long winded and too much romance for me, I don't mind a bit but this was too much.

4.5 GRIPPING STARS!
I actually enjoyed this more than the first one, "The Last Victim". I was more caught up on the profiling, and exploring into the mind of a serial killer. Plus, Charlie has managed to control her constant puking on crime scenes.. :D
In this sequel, to sum it up, murder comes knocking on Charlie's door, literally!!! So, with Charlie's life maybe in danger.... she and the FBI team lead by Agent Tony Bartoli, are once again out to stop a serial killer, this time known as "Gingerbread Man."
And on the personal aspect, Charlie is dealing with her feelings towards Michael.... because it is impossible and absolutely not healthy to have a relationship with a ghost!
It's really easy to like Dr. Charlotte “Charlie” Stone. She is sweet, simple, smart and as Michael often describes her, soft hearted.
Charlie is one of the top expert on criminal pathology... But what makes her special is that she can see the spirit or ghosts of the victims. On rare occasion, she is able to even talk to the ghost (which she was able to do on book 1). But, most often, the ghost can't see her... on those cases, she sends Michael to talk to them instead.
Michael Garland is dead and who's spirit or ghost has latched on to Charlie when he died. He is also very hot, sexy and charming that Charlie can't help being attracted to. I know she shouldn't... but even I like Michael. He grows on you. Though he does talk a lot. But he brings the humour and, I think, the heart on the story. I hope Charlie will look into his case next... cause in this book, you will hear more about Michael's story. The only problem is, I need him alive for Charlie!
Then there's Tony or Detective Bartoli who is also interested with Charlie. Though Tony is also hot, he just doesn't have that certain oomph that Michael has. Still, he has more chances with Charlie should Charlie pursue that option cause he is definitely alive and living!
So, okay, romance wise... I loved and hated it.... I really am not a fan of love triangles... and the thing is, I don't even know if there is one and where it is heading... It is frustrating and confusing! And Charlie does have hot sex with Michael... but that can only happen when Charlie's soul travels outside her body... it's the only time she can be in physical contact with Michael!
Anyway, setting aside the romance, there is also the mystery and suspense part of the story where Charlie and the FBI team tries to figure out who the Gingerbread man is! A lot of brutal and disturbing crime scenes... and a more disturbing mindset of the serial killer that is well narrated. Then there's that thrilling climatic ending that was stunning!
The story is constantly moving... loved it! An addictive romantic suspense series with a touch of paranormal.
And talk about that ending! OMG! Where is Michael's story heading! I don't think my heart can wait too long to find out!
And what's up with Agent Lena Kaminsky attitude! She is really getting on my nerves.

On the other hand there is Michael who, aside from the fact that he is dead, may or may not be a serial murderer, has a definite dark side to him, BUT he is beautiful, protective, sexy and seems to do it for Charlie......Yup, quite the dilemma.
It sure makes me want to read the next book, to find out what happens with Michael, Tony and of course, Charlotte.
As always.......Karen Robards delivers high quality in THE LAST KISS GOODBYE!!!

Ugh.... this book was completely disappointing. I actually enjoyed the first the in the series book and was really looking forward to this book. I even was tempted to buy it when I could not get a copy out of the library fast enough.
Let me just say, that this entire book can be summarized as such: Dirty looks, small mind games for small minded children, He loves me Loves me not, She loves me She Loves me not, a barely plot, and so much stupidity I swear you could wear a "I am with Stupid" T-shirt while reading this. WOWZERS!!!
This entire book was about Charlie giving dirty looks to Michael and Him acting like a 12yr boy in love. Robards even manages to have them fight about their relationship while a killer is scratching at the door. I mean, really??? Who the Fuck does that? Who has a relationship argument while a killer is trying to come in the back door.
Anyone watch the last episode of 90210? No really, bare with me. There was a disaster, some theatre trapped two of the main characters inside, and while the rescue effort is going on Naomi plans a benefit concert with a known rock band, gets T-shirts and a performance stage directly across from the theatre, not to mention media coverage and pamphlets for the cause, a Full blown backdrop of her name and picture, all in the matter of an hour of the theatre collapsing? DUMB?????????
This book made that plot plausible!!!!!!!
Obviously there will be another book in this series, here is hoping it is not as stupid as this one.

I continue to enjoy this series. I've already bought into the whole fall in love with a ghost thing so I have no problems with that. I say that because a lot of people seem to get mad at that element. But I say just don't read it then. Plenty of books out there and it's not like it isn't clearly spelled out on the back of the book that the guy is the ghost of a convicted serial killer.
Another serial killer turns up here just after the last one. I guess the reader can buy that since the woman does work in the field of studying serial killers to find out what makes them tick so it would be more normal for her to run into them right and left than it would be for an ordinary person. The serial killer plot was secondary to the romance as in the first book. but it held together and made sense. The point here is not to figure out who the killer is so much as it is to escape him at the climax. This one was more intense than in the first book.
The strength of the story continues to be the relationship between Charlie and Michael and their growing love for each other. This relationship is developing and you can tell it has caught both of them in its grasp which of course adds a great element of angst cuz after all one of them is dead. On to the next one.

Even though I have read and enjoyed several books from Karen Robards in the past, I have to admit I struggled a bit with this one. Perhaps it is because I didn't read the first book in the series but I'm not sure that is it. Dr. Stone can see ghosts but obviously she doesn't want anyone else to know since most likely they'd think she was crazy. Currently she is keeping company with a ghost who happens to have been put to death for being a serial killer. Despite his less than stellar background, Dr. Stone finds herself falling for him when she knows she should be falling for a real life FBI agent instead. Besides her little problem with a ghostly boyfriend, Dr. Stone also has a habit of meeting serial killers that want to kill her. She teams up with the FBI to catch the Gingerbread Man. However, the majority of the book is just Dr. Stone arguing with her ghost about whether they can have a future. And while I don't mind reading paranormal romances this had a weird love triangle going on. Not sure that I would recommend this series to anyone even though the story did really pick up towards the end, it was too much of a struggle to get there.

Updated Review: Amazing how knowing how the series is going to end changes one's perspective of a book during a re-read! Hence the upgrade of my original 2 star rating to a 4 star. Lesson to be learned: Trust the author.
Original Review: Karen Robards has been one of my favorite romantic suspense authors for some time. As with the first book in this series, I just don't see where she plans to go with this story arc. Was the ghostly serial killer that Dr. Charlotte Stone falls for truly a serial killer or was he a good guy framed for murder? Even if he really was a good guy, ain't no getting around the fact that he's dead and she's not.
I'm not really enjoying these books, but I keep reading them just to see how Robards intends to deal with these issues. At least I'm not spending $$ on them - thankful for the library.

Listening on audio I am really enjoying this series. I can see this had a lot of bad reviews and I wonder if the book would have irritated me if I’d read it instead. I ole the characters and the action and I’m starting the third right away.

I originally "dnf'd" this at 30%, but decided to pick it up again and give it another go.
I ended up enjoying it much more than I thought I would. Michael saved this book for me and I have to know how the author is going to turn this ghost romance into an HEA.

Is the concept unhinged, for sure. Did it make me laugh, sure did. Micheal is funny, the situation is ridiculous but he never fails to throw in a comment that makes me snicker. The writing was a little relative yes, but the story itself is interesting. I’m in it for the long hall with these two.

Charlie saves a woman, but is now the target of another serial killer. And despite trying to deny her feelings for Michael, their relationship is also growing stronger. I do love his jealously something fierce. It also makes you feel all the feels, because really, what can become of it. Them. But the stuff he says, my gosh. I am here for the tension!!
Like I said previously, it is an older series, and feels it. And you need to be able to just go with a storyline to enjoy it. I personally love some mystery/crime solving alongside some romance, action, steam and humour-so this reread on audio is working for me! Keep in mind, it can be a bit gruesome/descriptive.

On page 258, I recorded the fifth time that the main character, Dr. Charlotte Stone, "Charlie" felt cold all over. There might be even more instances, but by that time, I had started skimming the book to avoid all the interruptions to the plot from Michael the "badass" ghost that Charlie's irresistibly attracted to. (I got tired of all of the banter between the two of them at page 173.) Throughout the book, Charlie also repeatedly feels "a cold finger sliding down her spine," or "a chill sliding down her spine." She sometimes feels "darkness closing in," or feels her "blood draining down to her toes." On at least one occasion, the earth shifted beneath Dr. Stone's feet. There's so much lip tightening, chest tightening, and so on that I became worried for the physical well-being of the characters! Dr. Stone claims to be, "an expert on serial killers. So this time the Gingerbread Man has messed with the wrong expert," but it is almost always Michael the ghost that gives her the next idea in her pursuit of this serial killer. So, with all the cliches, the long passages between Michael and Charlie that interrupted the flow of the main dialogue so much that I could not follow it, why did I finish? I liked the kooky name for the serial killer, "The Gingerbread Man," who sends letters to experts that say, "You can't catch me," as in the nursery rhyme. I would have loved for this story to be told in a more complex fashion. In the end, I read it to make sure that I was right about who the serial killer was, which I guessed on page 178 when this character was first introduced. Why? Because he was absolutely the only possible suspect, the only male character that was described as less than handsome. And I wonder if it would not be too hard to explain what an "unsub" is? I might have overlooked this when it was explained (I was skimming the book, after all) but if you're going to use jargony terms to create an air of authenticity, find a way to let readers know what they mean! (Some of us don't actually watch Criminal Minds. (The general consensus on the inter-webs is that it means, "Unknown Subject.")
