Thanx to Netgalley, the author and illustrator and Quarto Publishing group.
Gawd I have danced and sang to Kylie for many years. Pop dance diva extraordinaire.
This past year I listened to Padam padam so many times that it almost led to marital breakdown (kidding). I had to have a looksy at this when I saw it on Netgalley.
I believe that this is the third book I have read in this young childrens' series about notable people.
This was really meh in both illustrations and narrative. Like really meh.
Oh well I am going to go do some housework and listen to some Kylie. Padam padam ~
4★ “In class, Kylie was shy and quiet. She never took part in the school plays. But back home, her favorite game was singing for her friends.”
What child hasn’t pretended to sing or make “LADIES AND GENTLEMEN” announcements into a hairbrush? Kylie Minogue was an Aussie girl who, by the looks of the illustration, was a big ABBA fan, as were all the kids (and parents) then. “Using a broom as a microphone, she dreamed of being a star on stage.”
When she and her younger sister Dannii were still very young, their aunt took them to a soap opera audition. The crew thought she was just right, but it was Dannii who was ‘discovered’ on a kids’ television talent show and became a star first.
Kylie apparently loved helping Dannii with her heaps of fan mail, no doubt hoping to attract her own one day. After a few false starts, she hit the TV jackpot with “Neighbours”, and the fictional Ramsay Street hasn’t been the same since.
She made her name “playing Charlene, a feisty mechanic with a crush on her buddy, Scott. Everyone was hooked on their love story!”
Even with all of that going on, she remembered her music and recorded an old song, The Loco-Motion”, which became a hit around the world.
I remember reading an article by an Aussie who was so tired of hearing it on the radio, that they thought they’d be safe from it while travelling on the Oriental Express (or one of those far-flung exotic journeys). But no – before long, what should be played for the passengers’ entertainment, but Kylie singing “The Loco-Motion”. “Kylie hadn’t forgotten her passion for music.”
She went to London, became even more famous but craved some independence. She was tired of not being asked for her opinion, so she went shopping – as one does – and bought clothes that she wanted to wear, not what the controlling recording company wanted.
She wore them in a video and was happy to be finally expressing herself. “With every new song, Kylie made pop music fresh again. She experimented with awesome sounds, stunning looks, and spectacular music videos. The best artists, designers, and directors were thrilled to work beside her.”
I’m sure they were thrilled – they would have enjoyed basking in the glow of her success and hoping it would rub off on them.
When she was told she had breast cancer, she shared her diagnosis and treatment with the public, encouraging people to get tested.
She has long been an ally of the LGBTQ+ community and is still a major drawcard wherever she goes, headlining the famous Glastonbury Festival. “ Kylie became the first female artist to have a chart-topping album five decades in a row. From the young to the young at heart, everyone grooved to the rhythm of her songs.”
The Princess of Pop still reigns!
This is a bright, attractive little biography that captures the look and mood of the various periods. Five decades is a long time, after all. I am disappointed that if I didn’t know the blonde was supposed to be Kylie, I would have had no idea who she was. She has such distinctive eyebrows and wide smile, that I thought they might have made an appearance.
There are only a couple of very small pictures in the film frames that hint at her famous gold hotpants and the other bright, fitted costumes she was renowned for. Kylie fans may not mind, but I did.
Thanks to #NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for the copy for review of #Kylie Minogue.
I have heard of Kylie Minogue and am familiar with some of her songs, but that is where my knowledge ended. I enjoyed reading about her career, starting with her acting in series and soap operas. Locomotion brought back great memories and was her first hit, done as a pop single. I remember the original and thought hers was much better. I did not know that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and undergone treatment, getting that cancer free news. Her advocacy for women to get tested and keep aware is wonderful and she is also a great friend to the LGBTQ+ community. This little girl in Australia dreamed big, was supported by her family and became a household name in various countries around the world. An inspiration to young girls everywhere. I recommend that you listen to some of her music on Youtube and get that hairbrush or broom out to sing along into your own makeshift microphone. Rebecca Gibbon's illustrations were whimsical and added to the story. Another great addition to this series.
I love this series of books and think they are great for the younger generation. That being said, they are also great for us who are older, and together we can learn more through the power of reading. Highly recommend for anyone with little ones in their life.
This is the first Little People, Big Dreams book i've read with an Australian star - and as an Aussie who grew up singing along with Kylie - what a great place to start. The illustrations seemed especially gorgeous - and I loved that Dannii got a mention, as did Kylie's battle with breast cancer.
I love learning new things about celebrities, especially during their childhood. I never knew she was an actress in a soap opera, but loved her music when I was a teenager!
I received a free copy of, Kylie Minogue, by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Kyle Minogue is an actor and singer from Australia. This is a good book for kids to learn about Kylie Minogue.
I got this on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review!
I really love this series, and thought this was a pretty good addition! I think the aspects of Kylie Minogue's life that are included made sense and loved the art style!
Perhaps not the most striking example of someone who overcomes difficulties in earlier life to realise her dreams, but this pop icon it turns out, is very much a role model.
As you look at the ‘highlights’ within this brief life story, aimed at young readers you catch a glimpse into why she has achieved so much success.
I took my own two daughters to a Kylie concert “back in the day” so I know what an inspiring pop star she was and musically still is, with continued chart success and sold out venues. Perhaps it is a good time to add her to these figures within the little people, big dreams series.
What I found most revealing was her shyness but love to perform in safe environments. Despite her sister initially getting more attention and success she never wavered on her own ambitions. The spark and determination was within Kylie; she was not to become a star just because of pushing parents or a determined aunt. She had some inner belief and drive that made her continue with fulfilling her own dreams and finding a platform for her talents across drama, song and fashion.
I liked the way her career blossomed and wasn’t restricted by the first things she achieved. She not only made the most of her talent but she grew as a young actor and found her voice in music and dance rhythms.
Her courage in fronting up to and sharing her cancer diagnosis and treatment journey is perhaps more inspiring and demonstrates the depth of her personality and scope of her courage. But it is her music that elevates her into a superstar and role model.
Another wonderful instalment in this informative and inspiring series.
I am probably not this book's target audience, but it made me smile. A lot.
Obviously, at 32 pages, this is not meant to be a comprehensive summary of Kylie's career… and yet somehow it is! Even her most recent hit, 'Padam Padam' gets a mention at the end! The illustrations are lovely - the wheelchair dancer made me very happy. It's a very inclusive book. Except for LGBTQ+ people.
I knew I was gay – or, as the media phrased it back then, a sick subhuman that the all-loving God hated – when I was eight. Until then, I thought I was [f-bomb redacted] up. There is an actual mention of Kylie being an ally of the LGBTQ+ community at the very end, but a child won't know what that means. The only small rainbow flag in the book is literally hidden behind "Mom & Dad, we love you!" I am not a parent, but if I were, I would have appreciated being able to point at the flag and explain what it means. In a Kylie Minogue book, this particular erasure actually hurts a bit.
I received a free copy of the book from NetGalley. This did not influence my review.
Rating: 7/10 rounded down to 3/5 for Goodreads.
My ratings: 5* = this book changed my life 4* = very good 3* = good 2* = I probably DNFed it, so I don't give 2* ratings 1* = actively hostile towards the reader
Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara is the bestselling author of Little People, BIG DREAMS series, and within this book you discover the life of Kylie Minogue, the Australian princess of pop!
Little Kylie grew up with her parents and her sister, Dannii, in Melbourne, Australia. She loved singing and dancing in her room, but she felt shy in front of other people. Her confidence and courage grew as she watched her sister perform, so she auditioned for a role in a TV show… and she got it!
From there, she moved on to a role in Neighbours and became a star all over the world. Today, she is one of the most-loved artists ever; a chameleon who has dazzled her fans for decades.
This book was sweet but did not grab me or my nephew like the rest of these books which has always been 5 stars. But enjoyable
Big Thank you to Netgalley and Quatro Publishing Group for my ARC.
This is a new book publishing in March 2024, in the ‘Little People, Big Dreams’ series. I had read some others in the series previously with my eldest child which were focused on historical characters.
I read this book with both of my children and we enjoyed reading about Kylie. The illustrations were great and complimented the story. There were some parts that I had been unaware of and Kylie’s cancer diagnosis was also included. There were also other aspects of Kylie’s life/career that were not included but I appreciate this will be the case in such a condensed biography. My children and I enjoyed listening to some of Kylie’s songs after reading this book. I think it is interesting that more contemporary figures are also being written about in this series.
I would rate this book 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4 stars).
Thank you to the publisher, Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Children's Books for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This is a very interesting children's book, which is part of the awesome Little People, Big Dreams series.
It is about Kylie Minogue, an Australian actress and pop star. We learn about her life as a child, alongside her sister Dannii, up until they are both adults and as famous as each other. I used to watch Neighbours on the TV and I liked Kylie and Jason Donovan. I met Jason Donovan once when he was opening up a group of houses near where I live.
I really enjoyed reading this book, which has beautiful images and easy to read text. There are also extra facts at the back of the book which I found very interesting and enjoyable.
This would be a good book for any child, whether it be from their home library, local library or school library. It is full of knowledge, wisdom and history, which any child would enjoy. Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
We love the Little People Big Dreams series. They continue to be a hit with our family and I love that my kids (and myself) are learning about real people and being inspired by them through these stories.
this one was no different.
I had heard Kylie Minogue's music but hadn't heard her story before. From her beginning as a little girl loving music to the artist who changed the industry, she is a force in pop music. I loved how the back half of the story showed how she worked to bring her own style and flare to her music and image as opposed to what her agents thought would sell...and I love that it worked.
My kids immediately wanted to go listen to some of her music and it spurred great conversations about music (another love of mine), future dreams and bringing your own personality to whatever you do.
With over 100 biographies in print, you're likely already familiar with the Little People, Big Dreams series. For those who enjoy reading these easily-digestible biographies (and, I do!), Kylie Minogue is a satisfying entry. Likewise, fans of Kylie are sure to enjoy this child-friendly synopsis of Kylie's 30+ years in the entertain ment biz. Fans of naive art illustration will also embrace this book...the drawings are adorable! But for everyone else, Kylie Minogue, in both human and book form, is probably not relevant (or ground-breaking, or history-making) enough to young readers to merit a recommendation.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for providing a free e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Kylie grew up in Australia with her parents, sister, and brother. Following in her sister's path, she got into acting first, and went from soaps to becoming a pop star on three continents. in the course of time she won her second ever Grammy Award, two decades after her first. The illustrations by Rebecca Gibbon are fun, simple, brilliantly colorful, and delightful. Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your local public library! I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Quarto Publishing Group/Frances Lincoln Children's Books via NetGalley. Thank you! Expected publication March 5, 2024 @QuartoKids @CBCBook @Frances_Lincoln #(LittlePeopleBIG DREAMS @sanchezvegara @TheQuartoGroup #BreastCancerSurvivor
A typical book in this series, with not-too-bad illustrations and easy text conveying the biography of the subject in not much more than bullet points. Atypically, however, there is little for the book to fudge over – no bad marks, no skeletons in the closet and no dubious decisions or awkward death to try and ignore. I don't think it has the meat and conviction of some volumes of this franchise, as there is little oomph to the "this is someone for whom respect is demanded of and you will grow up wanting to emulate them, or else", but there is also the up-to-the-minute aspect of "Padam Padam" being mentioned, so it's all OK. Perhaps four stars is a touch generous, but who are we kidding – these books will sell whatever any critic says.
As per usual with the Little People, Big Dreams editions, this one gives a child-appropriate biography of an influential person either contemporary or from history. I love how they seem to focus on women's stories throughout history in general, as they have tended to be erased from collective memory. This issue covers none other than pop icon Kylie Minogue from her childhood in Australia, her sister's earlier success, then her own, her persistence in the music business and later cancer struggles. The illustrations are close to what children themselves draw, yet in a slightly more elevated and proportion-adequate way. A wonderful gift for the children in your life.
This was the first book I read in the Little People, Big Dreams series. Minogue's journey is one of perseverance, hard work, but also about fun and joy. There is a lot in her story to look up to. This is amazing if you are a fan of Kylie Minogue and/or have introduced her music to your children. I love being able to put a story behind the music. I would recommend this book for ages 5-8 years old. Warning to parents, it mentions her battle with cancer, so be prepared to talk about a tough topic.
Thank you, Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books, for this advanced reader's copy.
The latest in the Little People Big Dreams series sees Kylie Minogue added to the collection.
As usual, the story is brief but informative, perfectly pitched at younger children. The author doesn't shy away from Kylie's breast cancer diagnosis, and indeed puts a positive spin on it by commenting on her inspiration to others.
I felt the illustrations were a bit lacking this time, I didn't immediately recognise Kylie from the images. However, it was a lovely addition to the series, with a perfect amount of information.
As a pop princess, Kylie definitely deserves her very own Little People, Big Dreams book. She is beloved by early ages, having amassed fans from the 1980s into present day via her acting in some popular soap drama, to her acting, charity work and as an icon to the LGBTQIA community. This book is as fun as the pint sized star, full of bright illustrations and accompanied by her biography in short paragraphs. It is perfect for young readers and fans of the series. #kylieminogue #littlepeoplebigdreams #mariaisabelsanchezvegara #netgalley
I love Kylie Minogue which is why I wanted to read this. I didn't know some of the stuff it talked about in the book so that was really fantastic to learn new stuff.
The way it was presented was good for children a little older. The pictures made it seem like it was for really young children, but some of the verbiage used seemed to be geared for a little older children.
That being said, I don't see why older children can't have cute picture books also. The real photos at the end timeline were really fun.
I love this series of books. I will be honest and say I don't think this one was quite as inspiring as some of the other ones I've read but it was still a lovely read, and anyone who likes Kylie would love it! The children's-drawing style illustrations were great, nice and bright for the kids to enjoy. And I did learn a thing or two which I love about these books. I knew she rose to fame from Neighbours but I didn't know she'd been in anything before that. I'm looking forward to seeing who gets one of these books next.
*Thank you NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children's Books for sending me this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.*
Let me start by saying that I'm a fan of the Little People, BIG DREAMS series. I love the bite-size biography format and how attention-grabbing each book is.
However, I wasn't really impressed by this particular one. I would have liked to learn more about Kylie Minogue's life, and I wasn't too fond of the art style. Regardless of those aspects, it is still a good picture book that I would recommend to any fan, big or small.
Here is another book in the popular series. I love the cover and all of the bright, engaging illustrations in this entry on Kylie Minogue.
What kids will see is that a child who was initially shy can go on to achieve her dreams. For Kylie this had to do with acting, singing and being her own person. Kylie’s adversity, having breast cancer, is also touched on.
This is good addition to the many books that have been published about little people with big dreams.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this title. All opinions are my own.
This charming, very short picture book by Sanchez Vegara focuses on the pint-sized pop-princess. The illustrations are undeniably charming and the writing has a peppy, zingy energy about Kylie's natural rise to stardom.
I think it could be longer or could offer some questions or interactive activities to have children better connect with the material, however, I was very content reading this as my first Netgalley request in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Sanchez Vegara.
Another addition to the series focused on a more current figure, and it was a success for me. We always enjoy it when these books are set closer to the modern day, as we can compare the timeline to our life and explore how it has directly impacted us, and this book was no different. I'd definitely recommend giving this on e ago if it appeals to you! Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced ebook copy of this title!
I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are my own
I was never a big Kylie Minogue fan, but I love the Little People, Big Dreams, so I was excited to review this book.
I have a brand new respect for Miss Minogue. 5 generations of music is amazing, and she is a breast cancer survivor like my mom and so many others. This book was about strength and never giving up.
Another amazing addition to the LPBD library, I remember that first appearance of Charlene in Neighbour like it was yesterday so was so chuffed to see Kylie being added to this iconic collection. Kylie has had such an inspiring life and overcome so many obstacles along the way - not least her cancer diagnosis. She is a much-loved musician and has been a huge part of my life growing up. One to cherish and add to our collection for sure.
